I found a baptismal record for an Elizabeth Treu on 18 Mar 1774 at Christ Church on Bieber Creek (aka Mertz church), but the Elisabetha I'm seeking died 13 Sep 1890, which would have made her 113 years old.

Re: Berks of Hanley, Staffs

Hi. I have access to Ancestry.co.uk. I too am researching the 'Berk's' from Staffordshire. Would you like me to do a bit for you, or have you progressed since you wrote on this message board? I too am researching the Berks. Strange that my name was Madeleine Golding, and I married a Berks.
Have you done any Golding searches? I have, and have hit a great big wall. There are so many ways that the name can be misspelled. Best Wishes. Madeleine Berks

Berks of Hanley, Staffs

I'm researching my mother's side of the family, and have come accross something of a brick wall.
What it is my grandfather was Isaac Berks, born in 1919 in Hanley. Quite oddly though, his parents (George Berks and Rose Hannah Challinor) married in Codnor Derbyshire in 1902 (odd in that Rose was from Hanley.
George is said to be 22 on his marriage certificate, and is recorded therein as being a collier resident in Codnor. His father is also called George, but is said to be a potter. Unfortunately nothing can be found on the census (I've tried to look on 1881 to 1901) for either of them in either Staffordshire or Derbyshire.
We have a bit of a family story that this part of the family came from Ireland, but I don't know where abouts in Ireland...and I'm inclined to believe this more and more since I can't seem to find them in England prior to George's wedding.
Would anyone perhaps be able to shed a little light? Thanks.
