Harris Berman and Sophie Berman, Odessa Ukraine area to NYC

Seek information on Harris Berman and Sophie Berman, both born before 1865, married in/near Odessa Russia, and emigrated to NYC around 1890.

Harris' parents may have been Herman Berman and Fannie Stern. Sophie Berman's parents may have been Morton Steinberg and Sarah Steinberg.

Their 5 children were all born before 1900: Herman Berman, Dora Berman, Samuel Berman, Frances (Fannie) Berman, Rose Berman.

Harris worked as a butcher for many years in midtown.

Both Harris and Sophie are buried in Mt Zion Cemetery in Maspeth NY. They were buried in the Gottzolowai section of that cemetery. Also buried in that section were Frances Berman, Samuel Berman and his wife Bertha Berman.

Please reply if these names are familiar or you have any knowledge of the Gottzolowai burial society. Often, people buried in the same section of a cemetery knew one another from the same hometown. There are about 200 people buried in that section. They may have been friends or family from somewhere near Odessa.

Do you have any more details? My grandfather was Sam (Schmuel) Berman who lived in Newark in 1910. My understanding is that he may have had a brother who also lived in Newark. The surnames Mutnick, Bates(or some such spelling) and Klein pop up in my research. He shows up in the 1910 census. I have no definitive info for him. My mother said that on her honeymoon she and my dad went to Newark to visit some of her father's relatives but she couldn't remember who they were. My grandfather never talked about his family. Maybe there was some sort of dispute.

My grandfather, Louis (Lev) Kisner (Kirzhner) and two brothers, Joseph and Nathan, immigrated from Shepetovka to Boston. Their parents were David Kirzhner (or something similar) and Mindl Mamzel. I just learned that my grandfather also had a brother Jacob, who died in childhood, and a sister Ethel (probably Etta or Ita) who was a dentist and whose three children moved to Israel. I'm trying to find information about other family in Russia. Louis had a nephew named Avram and niece Liza, presumably Ethel's children.

If any of this rings a bell or dates would be helpful, please let me know. Good luck with your research.

Looking for information about Max Berman who lived with the Gedko family in the 20th ward in Chicago in 1920. He was 40 years old at the time. Daniel Gedko was my grandfather...he was Russian and immigrated to USA from Grodno (Belarus) in 1909.
My grandparents were listed as Gedku in the census...but everything matches...just a misspelling. Trying to find out if one of my grandparents was Jewish or both Russian Orthodox.

Harris Eli Berman (b. 1864) and Rebecca Cohen Berman in Glasgow Scotland

Hello I am trying to find descendants of the Berman or Blumenthal family that resided/resides in Glasgow Scotland. The info that I have would be descendants of Harris Eli Berman (b. 1864 in Russia died March 16, 1921 Govans Scotland) and his wife Rebecca Cohen Berman (b. 1867 Russian died 1924 Govans Scotland). They had several children- Abraham b. 1888-who stayed in Canada when the family went to the States briefly and married Fannie Blumenthal (also lived in England next door to the family and moved back together around 1908),
Kate b. 1890, Sarah b. 1891 married Abraham Blumenthal in Scotland and had at least one son, Raphael b 1894, Joseph b 1895, Charles b 1897, Lillie b 1899, Simon b 1900.

The family lived next door to Harris and Annie Blumenthal (my ancestors) and may have been related to the Bermans (besides from their children marrying). I am looking for current descendants of either family.

email mollyblum@msn.com

Thanks,
Amybeth

I do know that there are at least two in California. A male first cousin born to the brother who was born in the U.S.A. in 1906 and his sister, married to a retired physician. Could be related to me but I have no way to authenticate it.

Forgot to add other information that I found since the original post. Max or Mark Barmab came from Konstantin in Russia. His wife and children, Esther,34(the wife) Abraham 5, David 8, Rachel 4 and Arke almost 2, was called Harry arrived on the ship Philadelphia from Southampton England on Sept 4, 1904. They were met by husband Marks Barmab and they are all listed on the ship manifest as Barmabs. Max died in either 1907 or 1908. Haven't been able to learn much about him. There was an older brother too name Oscar but I have learned nothing about him either. He probably came to U. S. A. with his father.

All I know is that he was named either Mark or Max and there is no information I can find about how he entered the United States, although I have found other Bermans with the same original last name, Barmab that came into the U.S.A. through Canada and settled in St. Louis..That is about it.

Did he have a brother named Mike, or Micheal? Mike Berman was my Great-Grandfather's name on my maternal grandmother's side and emigrated from Russia around the 1900's I think. I don't know that much about that branch of the family but I have heard some things about store owners in the family, including a liquor store. My grandmother said that she never knew the Grandfather on that side of the family so it would fit if he died when your father was young. Perhaps we are related.

Rose Berman was born in NY about 1895. Her parents were both born in Russia. They are of Jewish origin. I know that Rose had a brother William, Hyman & Max and possibly a sister Anna. I know that the father had a dry goods store in Hartford, CT called E. Bergman & sons. This would have been in the 1930's. A possible first name for Rose's father is Elijah.
Rose married Samuel Lieberman in about 1918. They moved from New Jersey to Harford, CT by 1930.
Any help is appreciated. Additional information will be forwarded as well.
Thanks Elizabeth

My name is Michael Berman. My grandfather Morris was born in Dubno, Russia, in 1883, and entered the US in 1906. He had a brother and sister who went directly to Argentina and lived in Buenos Aries. Two of his brother's sons came to the US in late 1921. Their names were Samuel and Jose(ph). They were both born in Krements, Russia, between 1901 and 1904.

Contact lasted for several years, but ended between 1925 and 1930. I believe one or both lived or worked in NJ, possibly for GE.

Does this tie in with your family?

My name is Joshua Berman, from Long Island New York.

My father and I, David Berman, are attempting to search for relatives of ours, his Great Aunt and Uncle, Hymann and Yetta Berman, who may have come over from Russia/Poland to live in Argentina during the late 19 century.

We are not sure if the two were married at the time they came over. However, we do know that either Hyman or Yetta had 2 sisters with the maiden name, Flaxman, who traveled to New York for my Fathers - Uncles wedding in 1924.

I came accross your name off of a google search for Jewish Bermans in Argentina. I would appreciate any help or information you may have on Hymann, Yetta, their sisters, relatives or any other jewish Flaxmans / Bermans who lived in Argentina.

Thanks.
