Rene: My grandmother (mother of my mother) was Gloria Bermudez Parraga, from Caracas. Her father was General Julio H. Bermudez, also from Caracas, and her mother was Rosario (I think) Parraga, from estado Aragua.
My grandmother always said we are descendants of the Venezuelan founding fathers Bermudez. I understand they were two, not only Jose Francisco.
I'd like to know the truth of this. Calls my attention that my greatgrandfather was a general, during the government of Cipriano Castro. I have been told that Castro was the godfather of my grandmother, Gloria.
Another thing is that those who fought for the Venezuelan independence received land as a reward for their services. Many places in Aragua and Miranda (Los Teques) carry the Bermudez name, and my great grandmother is from there. She married a guy from Caracas, Is that a coincidence?
Do you think there is a relationship between you family and mine?

Dear Maritza,

My mother and her family was born in Mosquito, in Vieques. Her name was Eduarda Bermudez Colon. Her father was Damaso Bermudez Martinez. He was the son of Gustavo Bermudez Giraldi. Gustavo either had a affair, or was married to Eustaquia Martinez, the mother of my grandfather.
My aunt (Beatriz Bermudez Colon) told me one time that Gustavo Bermudez Giraldi was in fact a Spaniard. That he had immigrated to the Dominican Republic, and was related to the Bermudez that make the Bermudez Rum till this day. She said they had some kind of an argument, and he left DR and ended in Vieques.

I suspect we can mutually benefit each other in our research. I would love to correspond with you and share notes. I visit Vieques about once a year to share with relatives, and plan to do more research as I visit.

Sincerely,
Guillermo Velazquez Bermudez

Dear Mr. Bermudez,

Gustavo Bermudez Giraldi is in fact my great grandfather also. He either had an affair or was married briefly with Eustaquia Martinez. They had a son (my grandfather), Damaso Bermudez Martinez. I can corroborate most of the details you've share about Gustavo. However, my aunt once told me that he was a Spaniard, who among other places had been in Dominican Republic. She told me he was related to the Bermudez that make the Bermudez Rum.
Hello:

My name is Jonathan Diaz from New Jersey.

My mother (who was born in Santiago, DR in 1954) had told me about her Great-Grandfather, a Cristobal Rochet. She has told me that Cristobal Rochet was from Spain and came to the Dominican Republic for of his safety, because of some war in Spain.

After reading what you wrote, especially "There are stories that he was smuggled out of Venezuela by his family for safety reasons", I think it may be possible that your Cristobal Rochet, is my Cristobal Rochet, and that Cristobal Rochet did not flee from Spain like my mother had said, but instead fled from Venezuela.

I don't know. Perhaps your Cristobal Rochet, and my Cristobal Rochet are two different people...or maybe they are not.

I would like to contact you, my email is pinstripedjon@aol.com.

Delatte family East Baton Rouge

The Delatte line I am researching is: J.T. (Joseph Thomas) Delatte b. 1922 d. 1976 s/o Robert Alcide Delatte b.1896 d. 1973 and Ida O. Babin b. 1895 d. 1970 s/o Ramie Delatte b. 1867 d. 1957 and Mattie Brashear b. 1874 d. 1932. Ramie s/o Alcide/Alcee/Alceed Delatte and Johanna/Joanna/Joanne Stevens/Stephens O'Neil (seems she must have been married twice). Besides Ramie, Alcide and Johanna had Mary b. 1874, John Alfred b. 1870, and Martha Victoria bt. 1873 (from diocese records). The dates, general locations and children's family names suggest that my Alcide is the same one born to Remy Delatte b. 1806 d. 1867. But I cannot confirm this. This Remy Delatte family is mentioned in Virginia Lobdell Jennings' The Plains and The People. Help anyone?

Correction: I don't know if my great-grandfather Bernardo Bermudez Aristiguieta founded anything in Trinidad. He had a Catle Company(?) in Curazao and died of cancer at a relatively young age. My grandmother Mercedes married Mario Belloso and lived in Maracaibo all their life. Regarding General Bermudez...now I have doubts. I should have listened more to my grandmother's stories, although she left a diary with all the family history (she was also a member of the Historical Society)which I can research and post an update, if this would help.

My grandmother, Mercedes Bermudez, was the daughter of Bernardo Bermudez and Mercedes Uncein. They Moved from Ciudad Bolivar to Trinidad where Bernardo and his brother founded the Bermudez Co. Later, Bernardo moved to Curazao. My grandmother Mercedes married and left to Maracaibo, Venezuela where she became a famous writer. Her cousins still live in Trinidad. Her grandfather was General Bermudez, Simon Bolivar's good friend and confidant.
Mercedes had 2 sisters (Isabel and Carmen) and 1 brother (Rafael) all deceased, but children and grandchildren live all over Venezuela.

Hi Rena, I am Blanca Bermudez David (Rea)I saw your information posted. you do need a deeper search for the Bermudez family before making further statements. their roots dated back in the 18 century. I live in St.Augustine Florida and there is a Historical research center in this City which can give you details on every Hispanic family which came to this region...I suggest you locate them for continued information..Rea Blanca

I am Rene Bermudez de Castro from Trinidad West Indies. I am a direct desendant of Bernardo Bermúdez de Castro y Caamaño Rivadeneira, who was born in Vimianzo, (Galicia, España he migrated to Cumaná Venezuela in 1670. Two of his great, great, great grand children Jose Francisco and Jose faught with Simon Bolivar. They had no male desendants therefore the Bermudez line did not continue through them.
My research is extense give me more information about yourself and I will attempt to link you.

Hi, I just found your posting of Nov. 2001 in reply to my
question about Benita Bermudez. My father Higinio was
born Jan. 11, 1886. He told us he was born in Los
Angeles, and that his mother was Benita Bermudez and
his father Francisco Chaires. He left home when he was
very young and appears in the 1900 census for Maricopa
Arizona, age 14, living alone.

He later appears in Kansas City and serves in the U.S.
Army during WWI. His early military records show that he
was born in Fresnillo, Mexico, and he mentions a Martina
Dominguez Chavez as his aunt, and her daughter Velia as
a cousin/sister. They lived in Douglas, Arizona. He married
my mother Elvira in 1930.

I know there was a Benita at Mission San Gabriel. She
died young and left a daughter Maria Adelaida de los
Reyes, who married a man named George Barry.

Sorry to be so late getting back to you. I have so many
feelers out that I forget to check for replies. If you
have any other information about Benita, please let me
know. Thanks.

Yolanda

MARIE EMANUEL CAPITAN, b. 01 January 1824, Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, La.

Notes for MARIE EMANUEL CAPITAN:
!Sponsers were Diego Quintano and Maria Sanchez [SJO-6,425] Ebr Catholic Ch
Records, V. 3, pg 195.

vi.	JEAN MICHEL CAPTAIN, b. 01 February 1826, Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, La.

Generation No. 2

2. MARIA EMANUELA3 CAPITON (PIERRE/PEDRO AUGUSTIN2 CAPITAN, JOSEF AUGUSTINO1) was born 29 January 1820 in La, and died 1867 in La. She married LUIS DELATTE, son of JOHN DELATTE and MARIA HEBRARD. He was born 21 May 1804, and died Abt. 1867 in La.

Notes for LUIS DELATTE:
The 1860 census listed the following: Lewis age 55, Mary 38, Charles age 11, Mary F. age 10, Rosalie age 8, Margaret age 6, Lewis and Joseph ages 4, (twins) Yersank age 1. Listed as a farmer with $1,500. and $400. worth real estate and other property. The estate of Louis Delatte and sale of items given in newspaper. A younger cousin was granted custody of the children. Legal papers with information is available about most of these children and the care given for them by a younger cousin of their father.

John Luis DeLatte was baptized 30 Sept. 1804, sponsors were Antonio Gras & wife, Genevena DeLatte. The paternal granfather was Luis DeLatte of New Orleans (SJO-6,5).

St Joseph Catholic Church Cem. Baton Rouge, La. burials:
Delatte, Melina, abt. 4 years old.

Vol 6 of the EBR church records books lists an Isidore Balthasard DeLatte, parents named were Louis Delatre and Marie Perricault, child age of 2 month, baptized 26 June 1847, sponsers were Louis A. Latile and Alzyre Latile (SJO-16, 169). The dates appear wrong for this to have been a child of Louis and Mary Delatte, and the census does not list her unless she died before 1860 and I have not seen the 1850 census. Charles is listed as being born 1847. So something is wrong here obviouly. Charles is listed in the census and the probate papers for this couple. Perhaps the parents were Remi (and his wife) DeLatte.

1850 census lists only children Charles age 2 and Mary age , Louis Delat as carpenter. Census says he's 45 years old and Mary as 30, don't know who gave these ages, as Louis born 1804.

Children of MARIA CAPITON and LUIS DELATTE are:
i.	CHARLES ARDONA4 DELATTE, b. 19 July 1847, Louisiana, baptized 14 Aug 1848, (SJO-16, 184).

Notes for CHARLES ARDONA DELATTE:
Church records gives parents names spelled as Louis Delattes and and Marie Pericaut. His sponsers were Henri Farland and Catherine McKetrick.

ii.	MARY FRANCES DELATTE, b. 08 October 1849, (SJO-16, 202)..

Notes for MARY FRANCES DELATTE:
Baptized 14 November 1849 , her sponsers were P. McKitrick and Eloixa hepper (SJO-16,202).

iii.	THEODORA ROSALIE DELATTE, b. 20 April 1852, Louisiana, baptized 20 Apr 1852, (SJO-16, 248); m. JOHN H. Her sponsers were Remi Dailatte and Antoinette Sanchez. Witnesses: Henry Repp, Mary Rodrigez, Thomas. J. Wood, Numa B. Bouche and E.E. Rodrigs (sic).
Tony, haven't heard a response fm you or your cousin that you would pass this msg to them, while doing their research of the family. Did any of these names in my family cross your family line or research??? I just can't find any information regarding my grandparents or their children. It very hard to get any information or documentation of any kind to find my relatives in their home land of Puerto Rico. Hope everything you wanted to find out about your family went smooth. Hope to heard fm you soon.... JC Lujan
