Hello! Can someone please share with me the Berrian who founded Berrain County in Georgia. I know he is a relation to me but I don't know how to find his name or his tree. I was told Berrian fought in a war before going to Georgia where eventually a county was named after him.

Any information will be grateful.
km

African-American Berriens

My mother's maiden name is Berrien and we're the descendants of slaves. It appears that Albert Berrien (the oldest confirmed slave ancestor of the African American Berrien Family of Rome, GA) was sold to James Weems Moore Berrien (1/2 brother of John McPhereson Berrien of Savannah, GA) and his wife Catherine Jane Noble in approximately 1844. The slaves remained as property of JWM and Catherine Berrien's heirs after their deaths.

Albert Berrien, my 4G Grandfather was born in Tennessee. According to a US Southern Claims Commission record, Albert's father was a man named Felix Grundy who lived in Nashville, TN. Grundy was a US/State Senator and Attorney General under Martin Van Buren. He was a prominent criminal defense attorney and a mentor to James K. Polk.

Please email me at Kimberly383@aol.com if you have any information about JWM Berrien and Felix Grundy (i.e. portraits, journal entries, family oral/written history), their slaves, and/or the African-American Berrien family of Rome, GA.

I have not confirmed that Felix Grundy owned slaves in his lifetime.

Any information you may have to help me piece together the full history of the African-American Berrien family would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a host of genealogy records (census records, slave name listing, probate records) that I can share.

Sincerely,

Kim
Kimberly383@aol.com

Other surnames connected to the African-American Berriens of Rome, GA: Bryson, Shropshire, Lyons, McCombs, Rice

African-American Berrien search

My mother's maiden name is Berrien. My grandfather's name was Edward Leroy Berrien, and he said his family was from Rome, GA (Floyd county) and owned a farm or tract of land there. His father's name was Alexander Berrien. I have done a little research and found an 1850 slave schedule that shows John McPhereson Berrien (b.1781 in NJ, d. 1856 in GA) owned a plantation with over 100 slaves in the Savannah,GA area.

I am looking for more information about his plantation and what happened to his slaves after he passed away in 1856. An 1860 Slave schedule I reviewed showed that a C.V. Berrien owned about 5-6 slaves in Rome, GA. Does anyone have any information about the African-American link to the Berriens?

contact Kim:
Kimberly383@aol.com

Thanks, Larry, for the clarification. In the meantime I had received further dataand had come to the same conclusion with a Berrien brother & sister marrying a Riker sister and brother. The two families were associated in Newtown, as you doubtless know, and at one point several Berriens held a mortgage on half of Riker's Island, Are you by any chance interested in the Riker family?

I'm searching for source information about the alleged marriage of my 5G-grandfather, Thomas Valentine, to Sarah Brooks (who may be my 5G-grandmother) which most likely would have occurred prior to 1773 in the Orangeburg District SC area. Sarah's parents are listed on family genealogy sites as Sarah Campbell Berrien and Daniel James Brooks. I'm looking for marriage, baptismal, land, will or probate records that would verify Thomas and Sarah's marriage and perhaps indicate if Sarah's name was Sarah Elizabeth Brooks. I'm also interested in learning more about Daniel James Brooks' and Sarah Campbell Berrien's life and possible migration to the Orangeburg District SC area sometime in the mid-late 1700's.

Any information or leads confirming Thomas and Sarah's marriage or regarding Sarah and her parents' life in or near Orangeburg District SC would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, John Reid
P.O. They had one daughter Irene abt 1894 - ? Family members say Irene never married as far as they know. Mary "Kate" is supposed to be buried in Evergreen Cemetery but I've not been able to locate this information on the internet. If anyone knows of this family, please contact me. I am only interested in William Berrien as the spouse of Mary "Kate" as it is the Terrell side that I am researching.

Thank you so much for verifying what I had guessed. My link to Rosabella Cooper Berrien is definite, and I had assumed that her mother was a Cooper, and the dates were correct. But I was just never quite sure. I am pleased to have this firmed up, because the Berrien line is absolutely fascinating, and there are a number of coincidental links beween my life and the latter. For example, one of them journeyed to Florida where she married a man who bought a plantation which was eventually sold and turned into a subdivision..where I happen to live right now!

Jen B

Peter, thanks for picking up on my querry, and yes, we did exchange messages several years ago. But the other Wm Berriens you list do not appear to help. The problem is that ANNALS p. 310 includes the following as children of James Riker (b. 10-5-1761): “John J;.... Sophia m. Wm Berrien....” and then specifies “John J . m. Eliza W.. dau. of Wm. Berrien, and d. Sep. 2, 1850, a. 67”. If, as some suppose, the two Wm. Berriens are the same individual, then he & Sophia had a daughter Eliza W. who married Sophia’s older brother! I believe this is highly unlikely because of both the prohibited relationship and the age discrepancy, and therefore I assume there are two different William Berriens. I have John J. as b. 1793 and Sophia as b. 7-12-1801. Do you have record of your Sophia & William having had an Eliza W. daughter, or do you have record of any other William Berrien having had an Eliza W, who married John J. Riker? Confusing, isn’t it!
Thanks. Ed.

Hi,I was recently in the library and took out the following book to reseach my French Huguenot ancestors. Found yours, I think. Source: The Huguenots or Early French in New Jersey by Albert F. Koehler, 1992, Clearfield Press."The Berrien family in America descends from Cornelis Jansen Berrien, who was born in Bretagne, France. He came to America, 1669, and settled in Flatbush, L.I. His wife was Janet Stryker. He died in 1689 at Newtown, L.I. Peter, son of Cornelius, born in 1672, in 1706 married Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Edsall. Some of Peter's children moved to Rocky Hill, Somerset County." Hope this helps. Merry Christmas. Linda

To Tim: I wonder if you are confusing Capt Cornelius with Cornelius Janszen Berrien (d.1688), the original settler on Long Island? According to E.Renee Heiss, "A Genealogical Hlstory of the Berrien Family", Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1982, Cornelius the settler's daughter Catherine b ca. 1679-) married Jeromus Remsen son of Rem Jansen and Jenettie (de Rapalye) Vanderbeeck, but they had no children. I find a later Cornelius Berrien 1734-1805 who was a naval captain during the Revolutionary War.His son, Richard P.Berrien 1779-1864 married Elizabeth Vanderbeck.Ted Wright

Carmen: you need to find your grandfather in the US census for NY; I think they're public now through 1920. NY Public Library has microfilm of City Directories to locate his address if in NY City. There should be a Social Security death certificate for him.The principal book on Berriens is E. Renee Heiss, "A Genealogical History of the Berrien Family", Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1982, tracing back to the original settler, Cornelius Janszen Berrien, New Amsterdam about 1664, died on Long Island 1688, but I don't find Floyd in the index, as Renee didn't trace all lines.I too am from a branch that settled in Quincy, Illinois in 1834 but spelling the name Berrian.
to Nancy A. Geer: In Renee Heiss's "A Genealogicall History of the Berrien Family", Baltimore: Gateway press, 1982, I think I trace your line for the first six generations: Cornelius Janszen Berrien, to New Amsterdam from Alkmaar,Holland ca. 1664, md Jannetje Stryker, died 1688, Berrian Island in Long Island Sound, near present LaGuardia Airport; John Berrien md Ruth Edsall, d.1711; Cornelius Berrien (1698-1767) md Sarah Hallett; Nicholas Berrien (1738-1810) md Elizabeth Hallett (Hallett's Cove on Long Island on the East River); Samuel Berrian (1761-1823) to Westchester NY, md Sarah Berrien; James W.
I'm descended from Samuel Berrien also, but from his son William. All the Berriens of that line since William have spelled the name Berrian.....I didn't know of the "Berrien" spelling until I became involved in the genealogy. There are now Berriens and Berrians all over the place, and so far, I believe we all go back to Cornelius Jansen Berrien. I think several lines began spelling it "Berrian". I was told it was because that was how the name was pronounced in Dutch, and it became easier to spell it that way, than to correct Americans who continued to pronounce it incorrectly!

Peter was the son of Nathaniel Fish and Jane Berrien, and the name Berrien appears frequently in later generations as a first or middle name: John Berrien Fish (1794-1869), Berrien Fish (1839-1879), and Henry Berrien Fish (1879-1931).

Berrien Family Search Around Waynesboro, GA

I am searching for my gr. gr. grandmother SARAH BERRIEN DRAYTON family. Recently I found out her maiden name BERRIEN. She married Edward (Ned) Drayton, Nov. 1869. In the 1870 census, Sarah (age 19) and Ned (age 21) were numerated with their son Benjamin and young girl age 5, Kate Sealy as a neice. The young family of Ta(o)lbert Berrien which I suppose was her brother, who had a wife and child, either was named Cliney. Next was a David Berrien approx 55-65 years of age, I'll assume was either their father (or Grand), numerated with him a 17 year old female named Joan. (maybe a daughter).. His occupation was listed as a domestic servant. During those times most families lived close together, so I would say they were all related. Numerated before all was a Cleora Drayton (age 42) along with a Thomas Farmer family, she is believed to be Neds mother. Ned and Sarah had quite a few children, the oldest was Ben (Book) Drayton, Elbert (Yot) Linsey (Jim) Eddie (Ed), John, Smith and Anna. She was also known as (Miss or Mama) Dover, she was the towns (WAYNESBORO, GEORGIA) midwife, during the late teen, 1920's and early 30's. Ask some of your older relatives if she was the person they were told delivered them or if the name rings a bell). Sarah was listed in the 1900 census but not in 1910. I assume she died during/before 1907 because Ned remarried in 1908 to a Caroline King. If you read this message, please spread the word that I'm looking for my people. If you have any information, no matter how slight, I can be reached at (617) 265-7390, until I get my new E-mail address.

Thank You Kindly,
Marilyn Drayton Taylor
