I have done the family search back to early 1700s with supposition back to 1600s. They are the Dun/Aberlemno/Arbroath/Dundee line but trying to link in the Montrose Berties and the Lochlee (not to be confused with Lochee, Dundee district). I have a lot of incidental information so may be able to help. Working with;
Dr David Bertie (Scottish)
Ian Bertie - One Name Study (English)
Evelyn Bertie

Hi
My name is Leslie and William Bertie was married to one of my very distant cousins. Third cousin four times removed in fact. William Bertie was born May5,1847 in Lochlee,Angus, son of James Bertie and Isabella Laing. He married Helen Thow(Aug,1846-?)June 15,1881 in Edzell,Angus. James Bertie was born James Thow Sept.13,1879 in Edzell,Angus. He was Helen's illegitimate son. On the 1881 Scottish census he appears as James Adams with his mother Helen and William Bertie and his brother David. At the time of the census, William and Helen were not married, she was a servant. Sometime between their marriage and Mary Ann's birth, they immigrated to the US. I have not found a record for this however. I have not found a death registration for Helen but
she is with her son William on the 1920 US census and does not appear on the 1930 US census. Hope this helps.

Looking now at the names and dates you have mentioned. I wouldnt recommend relying on IGI as being totally accurate. If the source information includes the word "REGISTER", I think that is good quality record.
You have the marriage certificate for James BERTIE in 1856. That will give his parents' names, hopefully.
Not being able to find him in a census is not unusual. I've found a number of mine with their grand parents, or even working. They worked from as young as 13 yrs or even younger.
In addition to Margaret's siblings you have, there's a Marjory Collie BERTIE b 22.5.1865 Montrose and James BERTIE b 2.11.1868
Don't think the name SKENE is that common but someone will always come up with surprising evidence in those circumstances. I wouldnt necessarily take the age in 1841 as being too accurate. Check out a later census and of course a certificate.
Hope that what I have said is helpful though I am not sure you were replying to me in the first place.
Certificate information can be inaccurate but its better than IGI or Ancestry.
I did find a grieving husband didnt know the correct names of his wife's parents, but maybe thats forgiveable. I found him listed as an Informant in the village and that could be worrying as he's known to have been a colourful character!
Hope theses musings help.
I have James BERTIE, son of James and Helen SKENE b 1 August 1831, married 29 February 1856 to Mary Ann ALLAN b abt 1834. I have Elizabeth BERTIE b 9.9.1863 as a daughter of James and Mary Ann ALLAN

Re: Bertie family in Montrose, Scotland

Let's see if this one gets thru.. I'm sure the first one was better. The thing is that IGI is only good enough to make a start. You really need a paper certificate.
At the time of the census in 1841 ages were rounded to the nearest 5 yrs for those over 15 yrs old, so someone aged 24 could be given as aged 20. This also illustrates why a certificate is the best evidence.
Where the Scots used naming patterns it was not unusual for two children to have the same name. It was likely that father and grandfather would be named the same and not unusual for the mother's father to be named exactly the same as her husband. Also, where a child died in infancy they would name another child the same to keep the name alive. I also have an instance of it where the first named left home to find work and a younger child was named the same.
The BERTIE name can be found prevalently in Angus and Kincardineshire.
Curiously I was looking at Charlotte Brown Bertie's records last night.
I will send this in case the first message was too long.

Thanks for the reply!
I have Margaret's siblings as: Mary Ann b 1858, Elizabeth b 1863, James b 1868 and Agnes Ley b 1874.
Have you found any others?

My problem now is with Margaret Moir Bertie's father JAMES BERTIE. He was 24 when he married in 1856 and I've found a birth on IGI for 1st Aug 1831 which at first I assumed was right as the parents are Helen Skene and James Bertie, but then I couldn't find him in a census.

The census entry for 1841 shows Helen & James Bertie living at the address stated on James and Mary Ann's wedding certificate so it must be the right family, but the James listed there is only aged 6, not 9 or 10. Would they have had 2 sons, both alive, with the same name, or could the age on either IGI, the typed census entry, or marriage certificate be incorrect?
Interestingly, James and Helen's son David is listed as age 7 on the 1841 census yet the only birth I can find on IGI is Jun 1829 so that one's out too.
Does anyone know if Bertie and Skene are both very common names in Montrose - could I be looking at the wrong family on IGI? I found another James Bertie born to Helen Skene and James Bertie in May 1826 according to IGI but that age doesn't fit either. I'm thoroughly confused!

We are already in touch. ;-) I have several lines, the names at the head of which I will list:

David Bertie & Elizabeth Knight m 13.7.1728 Fordoun - these are my direct relatives from whom Jonathan Bertie b Auchenblae 13.3.1845 who married Jane Kinnear on 4.12.1878 was born.

John Bertie & Ann Scott who married on 29.10.1762, Aberlemno, they were Weavers. The name Petrie appears in this tree.

Alexander Bertie & Elizabeth Smith who married on 26.7.1761 Montrose. I feel sure these must be related to those in my direct line because the Davidson name has been used in the Bertie/Knight tree.

James Bertie & Margaret Bridgeford who married 13.10.1854. Just a few names in that branch.

James Bertie & Elizabeth Davidson whose son William Bertie b 1796 married Jean Malcolm and who lived in Montrose in 1841. One of their children Elizabeth married Alexander Dunn whose parents were David Dun and Margaret Forbes.

John Bertie & Margaret Dere who married on 8.7.1763 Maryton, in which tree the names LOW, DORWARD, SKENE, SMITH, ALLAN, MCLACHLAN & MANN appear.

Like you I have done an IGI trawl and have census names in 1841, 1851 and 1861.

As I mentioned in my first post, all of the foregoing I have in GEDCOM format which can be achieved even if unable to link.

Jay.

Hi,
On your project... When transcribing IGI records..?? make sure your only using records extracted from local records and not submitted by a member or other person. Reason? submitted by person can have errors where as the other is a real record..

Now to add to your one name study??!! I'm from the Lost Colony Genealogy and Research Group. WE are also interested in Bertie: from website
Bertie, Peregrine -- 1585-1586 - Associated with venture, not necessarily passengers
WE have nothing more on this individual and would appricate any leads you might get. WE are also interested in anyone with this surname who will dna test. You can test via the project and get a group discount on tnhe price for testing with a group.

See our website:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/

Good luck with your project, you might try andd see if there is other DNA surname projects for the surname...

Nelda Percival
Hello Yvonne All I know is what my grandmother told everyone that two Bertie brothers came to England in the 1700 to work in Lincoln Catherdral carving the marble pillars and laying the mosiac floors. I have been to Lincoln to try and trace any documentation but unfortunatly many years ago there was a devasting fire and most of the old documentation was burned.
I did however discover that Italian workment laid mosiac floors in the grand houses of the catherdral square, and was lucky enough to see one of these floors in the old vicarage house.

I have no idea where in Italy they may have come from.

Regards

Susan

Hello Sue,
On one of your earlier posts you mentioned there were stories about the Berties coming from Italy. Can you please let me know what you have been told as our Berties did come from Italy and ended up in various parts due to them being sailors I guess I am the only Bertie left with this info as my father was born in 1887 but married my mother a lot later in life
Thanks
Yvonne

I have only just started looking into our family history, so am not all that familiar with how and where i find the information out. there is however a website which comes up called 'The Bertie family' which you may have already seen. If you 'google' it you should be able to find out a little bit from there.

thanks

Hians
Hi Helen,
I am not sure about anything from England but our Bertie family did come from Trieste Italy/Austria. My fathers father Joseph Berti also spelt Bertie especially whilst in Australia. Joseph came from Trieste then a part of Austria now Italy. I believe they were a boa/Seamen family and Joseph travelled various areas they say leaving ship in Australia to marry Charlotte Evans. Hope this helps.
Cheers
Yvonne
