In the old days when door to door census was taken the writing was also different!! It looks like a f but it is truly a s. Check other names not related to you and you will see the same thing. I just about went crazy too until someone let me know about the writing.

Hi there. It seems we have been doing the same line for a few years. I am a son of Frank J*hn Man*ut. He was born 2/16/1924 in Alhambra, California. He was the son of Francois M*naut (bn 1865 in Pyrennes region, Fr.) and Anne Daunet (bn abt 1879 in France). Anne Daunet was married previously to a Loustanou; they had about 3 kids: Pierre and Celine (Halet) and __. Anne Daunet's parents were listed as a Daunet and a Bordenave. I have a bit of information on the Bordenave/M*naut/Daunet lines in the Pyrennes region (Basque). The M*naut name was also spelled Manau, Manaux and Manaud. The Daunet line seemed to start in San Francisco, then moved to southern California. It may be related to the Pouquette family who was in Arizona. Francois M*naut was a shepherd and died about 1951 in California. Anne Daunet died about 1955 in California. Both had sailed around the horn about the turn of the century. My father went to USLA, was in WWII and Korea and settled in Hawaii in 1947. He is currently suffering from advanced Alzheimer's. If you have any more info, please let me know.

He went by Harry, and left my grandmother in 1925. He was not seen again and I have been trying to find any information I can. Your address caught my attention. Are there Besses with Cherokee ancestors that you know of? My mother told me we had native relatives but never knew more that that. Thanks for any information you might have, Connie

Hi Jennifer, all what i know is... the last name Bess appears origin from DUTCH yes indeed and FRANCE :)
so I think the tradition of the first names Victor is rather fun :P and a nice idea...
but It seems to be that one of your ancestors has been lived in France or Dutch got there his last name and went to New York ;0
I don`t know i just guess. but, yes to be hispanic ( from your mothers side)is something... you can be really proud of. ( according to my UWS experiences)... is always hard to figure out "who" we really are or where our ancestors are from. i mean for a longer time ago. i hope the last name research has helped a bit.

bye

good time

My name is Jennifer Bess, I am 23 yrs old and live in NYC. My father is Victor Bess and he lives in NYC also and is around 50 years old. His father is Victor Bess also and passed away in 2006.
My mother is Dominican and from what I was told my dad is puerto rican so I say that I am mixed. BUT there are rarely any hispanics with the last name of Bess.
I was wondering if anyone can help me determine what nationality I am from my dad's side.

Thanks......
