Will go back on a dry day to the graveyard and intend to consult the records too. There was no reference to George in either the 1901 or 1911 census -presumably not in the house on the evenings in question or not living with Margaret by that time -she was described as 'married' not widowed in the census. My grandfather was James Aulds and his wife was Susan Shaw originally from Renfrewshire and a Catholic though after marriage worshipped in the presbyterian church. She had a sister Ellen so there is a lot of finding out to be done. Priscilla used to live in Markethill so I will try to see if she is still there next week - she remarried some years ago and since my mum died in 1992 I have not seen her.
Perhaps we could contact by ordinary email?
quercusmillars@ gmail.com
Colleen

hi colleen, i think you may want to go back to the graveyard as i believe margaret shaw is buried there. she first married a william wadsworth who died of alcoholism in 1898 and who lived in and presumably owned chinauley. she then married george bethel and had lena in 1900. when margaret died in 1929 she was for some reason buried with william. i have no idea where george bethel is buried or when he died but he came from yorkshire england.
is it possible that your grandad is the shaw?
margaret

I went down to Tullylish graveyard yesterday but don't remember seeing a Shaw gravestone which means nothing as there obviously are gravestones missing in places. My grandmother was Susan and had a sister Ellen so it looks like maybe another family? The census says that my grandmother was ( a) Catholic and ( b) from Renfrewshire. My grandfather was Presbyterian and from Banbridge.
Still not ruling out a connection so more investigation to be done!
keep it coming!
Colleen

I would appreciate copies of any photographs you may have. We do hope to visit Chinauly sometime. Some friends of mine went to Banbridge last year and took some photos of a work in progress at Chinauly and I wrote a letter to the person who owned it now but never got a reply.
I do hope a meeting can be arranged
Margaret
Margaret,
I can confirm that this is the same person.
I stayed in Chinauley House as a young boy
and visited it in later life. Chinauley House
still stands although somewhat altered in
the last few years. It is no longer in Price
ownership. The house is situated approximately
2 miles from Banbridge and I have read that
it is a listed building. I believe that I have a
photograph of it along with Lena's family photo-
graphs, copies of which I can supply to you.
Maybe you can find a way to contact me
by email or other means. I visit her daughter
from time to time when I sometimes meet
her Bethel cousin. I will mention your message
to Lena's daughter(my cousin).
William

Jane Dickerson and her father, Vachel are my relatives - do you have any information on them? Jane's mother, Matilda Beaty, married her brother in law, Thomas Dickerson, after Vachel died in 1848. Thomas Dickerson later moved to Texas. Matilda's daughter, Jane Dickerson moved to Arkansas - and married James M. Bethel. At some point Matilda divorced Thomas and moves to Arkansas and marries a Curnutt? Matilda's son by Thomas, Joseph Luther Dickerson, stays in Texas, while Jane's brother, Vachel Jr's line stays in Indianola, OK. I live in CA and would like to exchange Dickerson information.

Gordon, I am doing some research for a friend. His mother, Nellie Bethel, was born in England. She then moved to the Bahamas (mid to late 1800's) and then on to Key West, and later Miami. She died in Miami in 1948. I have located 2 of her spouses: 1) Roy Warren and A L Dyson. The Bethel family appears to have been prominent in the Bahamas and Key West.

"The book that several of you have asked for is titled "The Early Bethells and Their Descendants 1638-1994" and was written by Carol & Jim Garde. This is a compilation of a work started by Jim's mother Virginia Mohler Garde (nee Bethel). Virginia started to "upgrade" her original book but her health prevented it. Her son and daughter-in-law took up the task.

It was published in December, 1994.
