I think we're distant cousins, the more details I find :). As for the earlier "Achilles" link, I'm just toying with that idea so far. I'm slowly putting my "Betts" family tree up here. I'm not sure how to give you the link right now, but will figure that out next time I hear from you :).

Hi I am looking for a Charles(Buddy) Betts who I believe is from Monmouth county in Oakhurst, off of Wayside road and his father owned a bar called Charlie's and would be in his 60's, any info would be much appreciated as he is my biological father and my biological mother is Barbara Harleman Soles and all she had was Charles name. My email is mpoklikuha@yahoo.com and you can respond to that with any information.

Yours is rather an old posting so you may have the answers by now. You may already know that Ronald G Betts married Doris L Young in Dunmow in 1945Q2 and David R Betts was born there in 1949Q1. Denise was born there in 1956Q4. There's a Dawn R Betts who married Robert G Graham in Dunmow in 1967Q2 who has no obvious birth registration. Let me know if you would like more help digging deeper, and in what direction in particular. I note you stop short on details for Mary Olive Crates on whose family I have quite a lot of history if you would like it. Regards, John

My g-g-grandfather was the county jailer in Sonora for a time, and also fortunately left a manuscript of his life story. In it he relates some very colorful information about one Mr. Betz (as it is spelled in the manuscript), whose paper trail is strangely difficult to find elsewhere. In the prison where he would almost surely have been incarcerated I can find no mention of him. And no newspaper accounts of the murder have as yet been found, either.

But my ancestor, David Cooper, clearly states that this Betz was convicted of murder, and that he was for a short time held in David's custody in Sonora before being carted off to state prison in the summer of 1852. According to David the sentence Betz received was 15 years. He also hatched an escape plan that included murdering David with a hatchet, but the plan was discovered and thwarted.

If your Betts disappeared in the 1880s it could theoretically be the same man, as my man's sentence would have been completed by then. But it would seem strange to have 15 years in prison, especially for murder, and still have no one remembering that about him when he vanished a few years later. So the highest probability is that these two individuals are not the same man. But unless we could come up with something more tangible to confirm or deny that they were the same fellow, there is no telling for sure.
He dissappeared sometime between 1880 and 1882. His wife didn't know what happen to him.. My g- greatgrandfather was said to be native American. He was also borned in Michigain.
What can you tell me about Mr Betts who was convicted of
murder?

Their were two Thomas Betts in Connecticut in the early 1600's. One was the Thomas Betts of Guilford who descended from Kent Co., England. The other one was Thomas Betts at Norwalk who descended from Suffolk Co., England. This particular Thomas Betts first arrived in Massachusetts with his brother Richard Betts who later moved to Long Island, NY. The two Thomas Betts both had descendants who relocated to Canada---which adds to the confusion.
Phebe Ellen Betts, born 1853, dau of Charles Betts & Rachel Smith, lived Bucks Co., PA, married Charles T. Holcombe Sr.

I have an original carte de visite photograph of “Phebe E. Betts Holcombe”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Lambertville, NJ, and she looks to be about age 16.

I found Phebe E. Betts in 1860 & 1870 censuses for Bucks Co., PA with her parents Charles Betts (b.abt 1803) and Rachel Smith Betts (b.abt 1816). Ancestry OneWorldTree shows Phebe Ellen Betts was born 17 Sep 1853 PA and died 1 Jul 1939 in Jefferson Co., NY. Per OWT, she married Charles Holcombe (Sr.) and Charles apparently died about 1778. By 1880, she was Phebe Holcomb, a widow with three children: ages 6 (Ruben), 4 (Rachel) and 2 (Charles) - and her widowed mother lived with her, in Bucks Co.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Phebe Betts Holcombe.

I probably have other pieces of information, too. I'm just not well organized with it all yet. So do keep in touch...I'll share whatever more may be helpful to you.
One other way I have searched here at Ancestry is via the city directories. Look up the ones for Camden, NJ and you will see some of the Betts family listed, I think around 1887-1889.
It could be that there was an error about Thomas' age in the different sources as well.
There's also an Achilles Betts I found in an earlier census or marriage record, I think around 1850. That's got to be a relative, because that's the name of John & Mary's oldest son too.

It sure seems like we're looking at related relatives, from Thomas and Linda on back. They did tend to name kids after relatives a lot back then, so all the Lindas and Thomases make sense. I just don't know what to think about the four or five year difference in the birthdates I've seen for Thomas. My question is whether your Thomas is John and Mary's son, or maybe the nephew or ? of John?

I'm especially trying to get the next level back, to John and Mary's parents.

Check out familysearch.org a bit more. Its a great site for birth dates and the like.

(email if you'd like to livinghope@post.com)

Louella Betts was my maternal grandmother... definitely the one in the link you sent. I can tell you that she had a sister Linda, who married someone with the last name of David who was a Naval hero. She lived in the San Diego area and died in the 1980's. Does that help at all?

I'm trying to figure out if we are both connected to the same Thomas. I'm finding birthdates for the one I'm researching ranging from 1869 to 1871. Then there's a Thomas D. with a birthdate around 1873. If they are two different Thomases, my guess that there is still a connection somewhere.

John A. and Mary's daughter, Linda, was my great grandmother.

For more information, try checking out this link: https://familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A%2F%2...

Very interesting... The son Thomas, who was 11 at the time, was my great grandfather. As far as Mary, his mother, I have no information as to her maiden name or anything. How do you fit into this picture? Another thing that's interesting to me is that Thomas (b.1869) had a sister and a daughter named Linda. I wonder if my Great Aunt Lin was named after his sister? It's very confusing because there's no one left alive in my family that knows anything about this branch. My grandfather, William C. Payne, remarried shortly after the death of my biological grandmother, Louella Eleanor Betts in 1923. There were only 2 children of theirs... my mom and her brother William, deceased. So this is all very interesting and new to me. I'd love to learn more, so anything you have would be appreciated.
Here's the quick version of what I have. From the census: 1880 Camden Co. Camden city ED 45 Ward 3 page 10B/Betts John A., 39 Painter born NJ, Mary A. wife 36 b. NJ, Achilles 17 son b. NJ, James P. 14 b. NJ, Thomas 11 son b. NJ, Linda 5 dau. b, NJ, Mary E. 3 dau. b. NJ.

I have been trying to get further back than the parents, John A. and Mary A. I have only gotten as far as finding a probable marriage date - I think its 1859 in Gloucester NJ. From that and later finding them living near a James Pierce, I am guessing that Mary A.'s maiden name may have been Pierce. John A. may have died 4/89 in Gloucester, Camden, NJ (from the NJ Death Register). Mary died 11/1882 in Camden. John remarried a lady named Ellen after Mary's death. I probably have a bit more (might have found a couple of the sons spouses). Let me know if this fits with your family history and would be glad to connect more.

Looking for information on Elizabeth Betts, born circa 1835 and possible born in Maryland according to the 1860 census. She married Isaac Pendarvis and they lived in Henderson County IL and were together on the 1860 census. One son named Louis died as a baby and is buried in the same location. Charles Wellrose Pendarvis survived and was born about 1861 and they also had a daughter named Julia E born about 1859. I have two stories; one is that Elizabeth and Isaac divorced and Elizabeth left and one is she just left. I can't figure out where Elizabeth and Julia went to. It is possible that Betts was spelled wrong on the marriage records. Maybe Betts was not her maiden name but her name from a first marriage.

Has anyone ever been able to find any information on the surname and origins of Ann E. "Liza" _____, who married John W. Betts? It is said she was born in NC ca 1813, married on 17 Jan 1830 (in GA?), and died 1879 in GA. Her children include Frances E. Betts and Lucinda Betts, who each married John T. Ballard.

This is in regards to Floy C Betts...I sent a private email but not sure it went through, so I am leaving the same thing here. Per Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Betts Schott Johnson who is 95 (born July 7, 1915) Floy's only child, and who lives in Asheville NC, Floy died in the Beverly Manor Nursing Home in California, somewhere between Chico and Sacramento. I went to ancestry.com and stumbled across a California death listing...so here it is: Floy C Betts was born in July 26, 1882 and died Oct 17, 1974, age 92. Now you can request a death certificate if you wish. Betty told me her mother was 90 so she was close. Tried to find an obituary again since now we know where she died, but still no luck. If I find one, I will let you know. If you find one let me know. At any rate this solves some of your questions. My personal email address is: Weidman_Elaine@yahoo.com. I live in western North Carolina. I am in Pa this week with my parents. Their ph # is 717-872-7826. Give me a call if you get a chance. Sincerely Elaine Weidman
