Bias, circa 1863
Commadore S, circa 1868
Martha S, circa 1861 (second great grandmother)

Martha married Robert Blake Cole (b.9/11/1857, Henry, Tennessee), 10/20/1883 in Weakley County, Tennessee.

I am looking for the parents of John A Bias and his wife Harriet A (plus her maiden name), and for information concerning John S Bias and Commadore S Bias.

Various spellings of the last name have come down through the family ... Bias/Byas/Byus/Dyus. Most believe Bias is the correct spelling.

Thanks, Steve

I was following messages about the 1st WV Cavalry and ended up reading your message. I have some information that may solve a mystery for you.

Your Civil War Roland S. Bias was documented as age 40 when he joined the 1st WV Cavalry at Ceredo, Wayne Co., WV, on Sept 14, 1861. See the attached file card from his Compiled Military Service Records. I don't think he received a pension. His name doesn't appear on the Civil War & Later Veterans Pension Index to which I have access and on the 1890 Veterans Schedule, there is no military or disability info with his name.

Hope this helps to pin down your Civil War Roland.

 I too am researching Roland Bias and Sarah Turner in Lincoln and Cabell counties, West Virginia. My tie to this family is through their daughter, Isabelle.

I also am trying to identify to which Bias family Clarissa Bias belongs. She was born about 1846 in VA and died 13 July 1896 in Cabell Co., WV She is the d/o James Bias and Polly ?; she married James L. Morrison. I believe Clarissa and her father James may fit into one of the Roland Bias families, but I can't find any proof.

I have identified four men named Roland Bias who lived in Kanawha, Cabell and Lincoln Co., WV between 1800 and 1900. These three are adjoining counties and Kanawha is the parent county of Cabell and Lincoln. Here is the information I have been able to gather from original records:

No 1. Roland Bias, b. abt 1820-?, m. Sarah Turner, b. abt. 1830-?, marriage date and place unknown, but likely VA or (W)Va. This family was living at Cabell Court House, Cabell County, (W)Va in 1860 and in Jefferson, Lincoln Co., WV in 1880. Using census, birth, marriage, and death records, I've confirmed the following as children of this couple:
Arabella Bias, 1855-1944, m. Henry Fisher Adkins;
Virginia Bias, 1857-?, no other data;
Emma J. Bias, 1858-1946, m. James W. Stagg;
John Bias, 1860-?, no other data;
Isabelle Bias, 1861-1955, m. Thomas Jackson Lawson;
Gertrude Bias, 1865-?, no other data.

No. 2. Roland Bias and Sally Mayes, m. 24 December 1833, Kanawha Co., (W)VA. No other data on this couple.

No. 3. Roland Bias (abt 1824-1885) and Martha Pauley (abt 1825-?), m. 17 Feb 1842 in Kanawha Co., (W)Va. I believe this is the correct marriage date although the grooms's name is listed in the handwritten record as "Robert" Bias. In 1850, this family was living in District 10, Cabell Co., (W)Va and in 1880 they were in McComas District, Cabell Co., WV. I believe this Roland is the one who died in Cabell on 25 Nov. 1885 since Martha was living with the family of their son, Jacob B. Bias in 1900.
Confirmed children of this couple:
Serepta Bias, 1854-1935, m. Wilson Morrison;
Lucy A. Bias, 1857-?, no other data;
Jacob Brillhart Bias, 1861-1934, m. Miriam A. Bledsoe;
Priscilla "Siller" Bias, 1865-1928, m. Robert L. Johnson;
Roland S. Bias, 1870-?, no other data;

No. 4. Roland Bias, b. abt 1793 in Amherst Co., VA; d. 17 May 1875, Cabell Co., WV. Two marriages listed in Kanawha Co., (W)Va appear likely to be for this man. The 1st marriage is to Dicey Brumfield in 1813. The 2nd is to Martha Mitchell on 22 Oct 1839. Also, this Roland Bias may be the man who married Sally Mayes in Kanawha Co. in 1833.
Roland Bias and Martha Mitchell were living in District 10, Cabell Co., (W)Va in 1850 and in McComas, Cabell Co., WV in 1870. From the 1850 census it appears that America Bias (1833), Hugh Bias (1836), and Margaret Bias (1838) are the children of Roland and Dicey (or Roland and Sally?) and that Emerline Bias (1840), William Bias (1842), Dursilla Bias (1845), Mars Bias (1847) and Adele Bias (1850) are children of Roland and Martha Mitchell. I believe there are several other children from this and other marriages.

No. 5. Roland S. Bias (1870-?) son of Roland Bias and Martha Pauley, may have married Anna Susan Bledsoe, but I can't confirm this.

Only one man named Roland Bias served in the Civil War. He enlisted with the Union in the 1st Regiment, WV Cavalry, Co. G and is listed on the 1890 census as a Civil War pensioner living in Cabell Co., WV. The index of Civil War Soldiers shows no other man named Roland Bias from WV serving with the Union and no men surnamed Bias of any given name from WV enlisted with the Confederacy. If Roland Bias, h/o Martha Pauley, died in 1885, he cannot be the pensioner listed in 1890. The next most likely candidate is Roland Bias, h/o Sarah Turner, but this is not confirmed.

At least one man named Roland Bias, and most likely two, were ministers.

I would be grateful for any help in sorting out the relationships among the numerous men named Roland Bias and their wives and children. Any additions, corrections or clues would be most welcome. Jean Lawson, WV

I think you have done a good job in your research. You know.... one of the problems in all this is they were all related one way or another. There could be a connection with this John Pane/Mary Heron in Ozark County, June 1866. Not saying there isn't, but could have been a Uncle? I also tracked a William S & Eliza Paine on the 1850-1860 Taney County Census and this could be my line, but I could never find this group of folks again after the 1860 census. The older relatives said my G-GF John Thomas Payne who is the one on the 1880 census with Mary in Marion County, said his fathers name was George S Payne, but I think it was William S Payne. I don't doubt there was a George, but not as their father. Also, if by chance your related to the Clark family in any way, there something you need to know. Hang with me here(ha)

John & Mary oldest son was Thomas Payne (1873-1965) We had always heard that he married a Margrett Yoakum and she was a sister to Laura Yoakum/Yocum that married Thomas Payne cousin John WEsley Payne. Come to find out Margrett wasn't a Yoakum after all, she was a Clark and her mothers name was Cynthia Wilkerson who married Jack Clark there in Marion County. Well, either Jack died or they divorced and she remarried to Issac Fisher and you will find them on the 1880 census of Marion County. It was through Cynthia Wilkerson that I found a Payne / Yocham line even though there was a marriage already between Payne & Yocums.
Hi Les,

Yep, probably same researcher. He is also the one who also said Martin Herron and Edy Taber's daughter was married to John Payne. That "fact" went the rounds. I do have a marriage record for John Paine and Mary Herron, it's a copy of the page from the marriage book of recorded marriages and there is a record on Ancestry.com, but very hard to read. And since there are only two Mary Herrons in this family and the ages are wrong, I even thought that one of the other girls that were list with the family could actually be a "Mary" i.e. Mary Elizabeth, but listed as "Elizabeth". But here again the ages are wrong.

You have the same info I do on Mary Herron and Enoch Long and Sarah Bias and Eber Long. The same researcher has posted that Enoch Long married Mary Herron and Lucinda Herron her sister. Incorrect. Lucinda was fooling around with Enoch behind the barn :o) and had two children by him, but they were never married. That would mean he was married to two women at the same time. Lucinda then married her sister Winney's huband William Neasby after Winney died and had a child by him.

What has always bothered me about your "Mary" was the date of birth, where her parents were born (if correct) are not with keeping with this line. All Lewis F Herron's children were born in IL, exception, William Green b. in Wayne or Taney co., Mo and died in in 1850 in Taney Co., Mo.

I have come to the conclusion that the marriage record is not your John Payne and Mary. If there wasn't a mistake on the recording of the marriage and that date 10 June 1866 is correct, and we go by the birth dates on the 1880 Marion Co., AR census are fairly correct, then your John Payne would have been 13 in 1866 and Mary 11. I know people sometimes married very young, but that is too young and the male was usually a tad older than 13. As I said, my conclusion, is this is not your John Payne's marriage record. I think it is another John Payne and an easy mistake to make. I also made it.

So, who is this John Payne and Mary Herron? I don't know, but have speculated. What if this were an much older John Payne and he married Mary Taber Herron, wife of John Herron son of Lewis F Herron
and Elizabeth Redman? I can't find John or Mary after 1860. I have searched and searched. Their son Lewis Herron fought in the Civil War in Co., B 16th Missouri Cav. and died in hospital of disease on 8 Feb 1865. Mary applied for his pension, which is usual, but not unheard of, usually if the father was alive he filed. And there is no date on when she filed. So on speculation, John had died during the war and she was a widow and married a John Payne in 1866. Now to prove it. :o)

But I sincerely feel that marriage record is not your john Payne and Mary.

Would like your thoughts on what I thinking and I will keep searching :o)

Alexis

Thank you and I think I know who you were refering to as I never trusted that persons info entirely. I found a marriage certificate between a John Pane/Paine and Mary Herrin/Herron in Ozark County June 1866, I believe, but I will double check. I was also told by another person that our Mary was from Martin Herron & Ede Tabor, but That Mary Herron married Enoch Long or at least that is what info I had. Also My Mary Payne and Sarah Bias who married Eber Long were born same state Fathers and mothers match also, but I have no proof that My Mary was a Bias, except one of my GF brothers George W Paynes oldest son stated Mary Payne maiden name was Bias. Manford Long who used to attend the Payne famiy reunions in Mt Home Ark always said the Paynes, Herron, Long and Friend family were all related. This is what I was told by the older relatives, but Manford Long even amitted that he did not know which Herrin/Herron line my Mary Came from. I do know and can trace the Payne/Friend and Payne/Henderson, but I have run circles on the Herron line. My GF Jones Walter Payne had a odd 1st name and it did not fit the standard pattern of names in the Payne line, so I thought maybe John Paynes wife maiden name was Jones, but I could not track anything down. I will find that marriage of a John & Mary in Ozark County and email it to you. Thanks for your correction.

Hi

I think you have gotten some misinformation. Mary Herrin/Herron born 1847 in Taney and daughter of Simon Herron and Susan Taber, DID NOT marry John payne. She married William Henry Hisaw / Highsaw b.1855 Ar and died 1898 in Ozark Co., Mo.on 24 Nov 1874 in Ozark co., Mo. She had two children before she died abt 1878-1879. Emmeline Earnestine Hisaw b. 22 sept 1876 in Douglas Co., Mo and died 14 July 1953 in Howell Co., Mo. She married William Thomas Russell b. 9 Dec 1878 Mo and died 16 May 1967 and Nella Francis Hisaw b. Aug 1878 in Ozark Co., and died 1960 Ozark co., mo buried in ball cemetery. She married twice. 1) Hiram Newton Fields b. 27 Jan 1873 Ar and died in 1898 Ozark co.,Mo buried in Martin Cemetery Ozark co., Mo. She then married John Franklin "Frank" Russell b. 1 Aug 1880 Missouri died 1965 Ozark co., mo buried in Ball cemetery, Ozark co., Mo. After Mary Ann's death, William Henry remarried Mary "Jane" Unknown who died in 1922.And had two more children by Hisaw.

we have been trying for decades to find whose Mary Herron and where she came from,who married John payne, but to no avail. But she doesn't belong to this line or Martin Herron and Edy Taber's line. There is a research, who will remain nameless, tends to copy information without checking it out and adds members to families, There is a lot of incorrect information on this line because of this researcher. I have done all the research and have documentation.

I hope this helps and you will correct the misinformation,

Alexis
