Hi Leonie - this looks like the breakthrough I have been seeking for years. Thank you very much: we must be cousins of some sort. I have quite a lot of details about the Bickerses of Terrington/Mowthorpe from about 1600, but could not link to my branch until now. I would love to exchange information with you, if you are willing? My email address is mike@bickersm.plus.com, and in case you might like to discover lots of other cousins I have invited you to explore the BICKERS FAMILY TREE on Ancestry. I look forward to hearing from you
Regards - Mike

Hi Mike,

I am also a descendant of George Bickers of Terrington. I have just been looking through my records for this family and it appears that the James Bickers who married Ann Sefton was the youngest brother of my George's father Thomas. Thomas was born in1773. His father, also Thomas, was born in 1742 in Mowthorpe and died in 1819.

Hope this helps
Cheers from Australia
Leonie

william bickers 1622

my maternal grandfather was James Albert Bickers,Henry cty,Kentucky. I have been searching information about the Bickers Clan. Recently I read The Bickers Newsletters, I found them on line. I read there was a William Bickers massacred in the Indian Uprising of 1622. His plantation was on the James River, in Virginia. The approximate location of his plantation was near Westover, and the Berkley plantations. According to the article after several attempts to "seat" the plantation, after no family members came forward to claim his land, often referred to the land of bickers, his land was patiented to a man name Stith{sp}, one of co-founders of William and Mary College. He sold the land to Benjamin Harrison,he was a grt. grandfather to William Henry Harrison,9th president of the U.S.A. My question is how can i find out if the said William Bickers is a decendent of my grandfather. This is the only information I have. My grandfathers line can be traced to Virginia,Orange County, and Govenor Alexandar Spotswood, Germana. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Please let me know what you find! There was a Grady Bickers who was brother to Troy, Harry and Denver. He was missing at sea in WWI. And from what I was told, there was another sister other than Pearl (Milam) Bickers. It is remotely possible that Myrtle is the other sister, she was somewhat the 'black sheep' of the family if this is her.

Unfortunately you are getting 2 unrelated branches mixed together. What is confusing you I think is that there were actually TWO George Carlos Bickers in the North Metro area, one branch lived in Paulding County, the others lived primarily in Cobb. Coincidentally, both G. C. Bickers were born around and died around the same time within a few years. Belle Myrtle and some of the others were in the Paulding County branch while Braska Hampton, Harry, Troy, Denver, whose nickname was "Bick" not Den, Pearl and one more whose name escapes me at the minute were Cobb County. This particular George C. was from Greensboro, Ga. None of the two Bickers families were in any way related!

Actually, we do know the exact spelling of Bickers back to Robert Bickers of Virginia, 1709-1808. Many documents, including his will give it as Bickers. He was my 5th GGrandfather. On another note, my 3rd GGrandmother, Nancy [Todd] Bickers, was one given in the census as Nancy Bakers. You just have to watch not only spelling, but how it sounds. I'd check with the local county archives/library to investigate further to see if your Victor & the 1880 Victor is an absolute provable match. Good luck & hunting!

Right, I was looking at the handwritten entry. So you're saying the US Census Bureau just misspelled the name in the 1880 Census and that people with the surname Beckers are not related to people with the surname Bickers? Or is it that Bickers and Beckers are branches of the same family that adopted variant spellings of the family name when they immigrated to the US and officials misspelled the surname? In that case, which is the original family name? Or is it that there always were two different families with similar, but different, surnames and the US officials simply confused the issue when they wrote down the wrong spelling? Or what?

The US census at that time were hand written. So when they were transcribed later or even at the time a lot of them were a common soundex of the original name example being Beckers and Bickers or Bickers and Biggers

That 1785-1868 James Bickers was my partner's Gx4Grandfather.

He married Anne Sefton daughter of William and Mary Sefton. (the Sefton name was passed down as middle name, then incorporated into the surname in 1920s - giving Sefton-Smiths)

The line we were interested in was their daughter Mary Anne Bickers (b.1828). I am related to the Tyson family and my notes have William Josiah Tyson marrying Malinda Ariah Smith on November 15, 1882 in Franklin County, Ark. Did Ruth Tyson die shortly after marriage? My great-grandfather Uriah D. Tyson was security bond on the original Desoto County, Miss. application. Curiously, a severe tornado hit Olive Branch, Mississippi on April 12, 1881. This is where they were living. My gg-grandmother, Rebecca Tyson, William and Uriah's mother was last mentioned transferring a property deed in March 1881 at the mayor of Olive Branchs office. I do not have a death date or place of death for her as well. This is my brick wall and I sure would appreciate any leads you can offer.

Iwould be most grateful for any info about the early Bickerses of Terrington, as I am stuck at my 3xGrandfather, James (1786 - 1868) who is supposed to have been born there, but doesn't appear in the Parish registers!
Beckers = Bickers ?

I just stumbled across an entry in the 1880 Census for New York City listing a four-person family of Charles, Hannah, Cary and Victor Bickers. That grouping of four corresponds exactly with my great-grandfather's family. The match includes my great-grandfather's profession as "painter", as well as birthplaces and approximate dates. However, my family name going back to my grandfather Victor Beckers has always been spelled "Beckers". Does anyone have any information regarding this change of spelling?

Andrew Jackson Bickers is buried in Randolph County, Ar.
his sister Louisa May Bickers was my great grandmother. There is information in Poplar bluff Mo. where Andrew Jackson was listed as an apprentice farmer.... Are you related to the second wife of Thomas S. Crittenden Asher?

Also, his grave is cared for by a family member, I believe it is the grandson of Andrew Jackson Bickers, in Pocahontas. I can't remember the name, but I met he and his wife several years ago in a family reunion.

I have never been able to get beyond Andrew and his sister Lulu (Louisa May) who is listed as a Biggers.
I have family lists of both and would like to know what happened to the children.
As part of the Asher family I have a pretty good history of the Asher family - but still would like to know about the grandchildren and where the families made their homes.
Appreciate any followup on the families.
The family most likely came from IL.
Veda Asher - asher@lakeozark.net
