I am the great grandson of James Barr and Susan Caroline Biddy, thru their son John Barr (sister to Melissa, Hattie, and Malinda). I have researched both the Barr and Biddys for 45 years and have much to share with you.

Please email me at mgbarr@aol.com and we will go from there. I also collected information on their descendants. I would like to know your descend from the Loftons and details. Thanks. Michael G. Barr

I am a great-great grandaughter of Susan Caroline Biddy Barr (1866 - 1948). I am trying to do my family history and keep hitting walls. I don't have much contact with my father's side of the family (they just aren't close anymore), so I don't really have any old photos or stories to go on. I am looking for any information on Biddy connections. I believe Susan was a daughter to Hamilton and Elizabeth Williams Biddy and I believe him to be the same Hamilton that served in the CSA. I also believe Hamilton to be a son of Abednego Biddy. I am starving for information and will be happy to receive whatever anyone has to offer.

Susan Caroline Biddy married James Barr. One of their daughters was Mellisa Jane Barr who married Marshall N. Lofton. One of their sons was Harvey Howard Lofton who married Marion Elizabeth Kliever. My dad is one of their sons, Marshall Lee Lofton.

Abednego Biddy is my ggg grandfather. All of my relatives would probably be insulted at this author assertions. The Biddy family is consider black dutch. This is a mixture of the English with the Portugeese who fought against Holland back in 1600s. Portugal allied with England against Holland and her allies during this War and Portugeese troops were station in Holland after the Dutch were defeated. I think the Biddy family derives its roots from Beedy family who came into Northampton co VA maybe from Holland. There is npo doubt that some of them had dark features. Most of them claim indian blood which is not true either.Amos Timms had to come into court in Union co SC to testify for Thomas Biddy that he knew Thomas from Lunenberg co VA and he was always know to be a free man. A. Biddy was Texas Ranger. His father Thomas Biddy jr md to ms Vardeman. Remember that during the 1800s anyone that was non white was consider colored regardless of their ethnic origin. I am most proud that Abednego Biddy and his wife Martha Carroll arrived in TX and was enrolled in Stephen F. Austin ledger book as part of his original 300 settlers with remarks "col". Blacks or mulattoes were not permitted to own land or be enrolled for land with the Spanish land grants. Please note in DeWitt co Tx Abednego Buddy was issued over league of land. Since the Biddy family had long before Mr.Addison time left Biddy fields in Burleson co, I don’t know how Mr. Addison would have know or seen any of the Biddy family. Abednego is on the 1850 DeWitt co Tx census and 1860 Goliad co Tx census. His son Jasper Biddy did marry a rich Vt man's dau, a mulatto lady.
Email me.
Abednego Biddy in Burleson Co. Book

I am not a descendent but my ancestors William and Joseph Connelly were neighbors and contemporaries in early Burleson Co. Texas. I have a copy of a book which is in the Texas State Archives in Austin which mentions Abednego and family. The book was written by M. H. Addison and published in 1886. The book offers many local stories and details a short account of the Biddy family by Addison who was a young boy when the Biddy family lived in Burleson. It mentions a brother Vard and Ben's family of "some size." Also, Abednego claims he is Portuguese but the author describes him as not a "dark mulatto." Mr. Addison tells of Biddy's heroic act of helping the fleeing settlers escape from Santa Anna in a small boat as they crossed the Sabine river in the "Runaway Scrape." The story which is written in the racial climate of the time offers the white settlers' disparaging remarks about Abednego's ethnicity and notes that his wife was a white woman.

Please feel free to contact me if you want more info.

Since the link no longer works, I have a newspaper article from the Mountain Democrat, Placerville, Ca (1971). It is in a column called California Stageccoach Days by Vern Hammond and is entitled "Mutiny on the Bay".

Jonathan Biddy and 4 others were charged with mutiny on the USS Ewing among other charges. All were sentenced to death by hanging. Jonathan's sentence was commuted, along with 2 others, to 100 lashes and hard labor in prison. John Black was hanged from the yardarm of the Ewing. Peter Black was hanged on the USS Savannah, the flagship. They were interred on Yerba Buena Island and moved when the Bay Bridge was built 80 years later.

George W. Blackwell, son of Thomas and Nicey, also states that Nicey was Nicey Biddy, daughter of Meshack and Sarah (Ledbetter) Biddy (Eastern Cherokee App #36886). He is the only child of Thomas and Nicey Blackwell I have found in the Cherokee applications. This would indicate that your theory is true, that Meshack had two wives or children by two women.

The Cherokee applications are very confusing. I think it may be that Meshack's father was Jonathan and "a Sawnee" woman named Mary. Meshack also had a brother named Jonathan whose wife was Mary. Then he has a brother named John who married Sarah Herron.

There may be another Jonathan who was Meshack's grandfather and was married to the Sawnee. Noah, Meshack's son, claims through Meshack's mother, Mary. Surely, Noah would know who his grandmother was. He also states that John was Meshack's brother and Susie Holland was his sister.

Caroline (Hudgins) Derby, wife of James Darby, swears that Meshack is the son of Mary and Mary is the daughter of Jonathan Biddy who married an Indian woman whose name was Sawnee (possibly the tribe?. (She gives an affadavit for Noah Biddy)

Arminda (Darby) Wilson, daughter of Charles and Nancy Biddy Darby, states her grandparents are Jonathan and Mary Biddy who were the parents of Elvin Biddy, John Biddy, Nancy Darby, and Peggy Sams. (#14075)

Sarah Elizabeth Biddy, daughter of Elias Watus Biddy, states that Meshack is the brother of Jonathan. (#16534).

All the Jonathans are very confusing.

I just thought I would give some of the mentions of Jonathan. There are others I didn't include.

When I have time I will start a new file and just try to make sense of the references to Jonathan Biddy. Any e-mails with info are welcome.

Hey Barbara, I realize it's been a while since you posted this message; but I just stumbled upon it. My gg grandfather, James William Holland (see application 7603 eastern cherokees), was the son of Willaim Holland who was marred to Susie Biddy. Susie and Meshack were brother and sisters. She also had John Biddy and Abednego Biddy as brothers. From my understanding Susie at least was the child of Johnathon "Edmond" Biddy and Mary "Polly" Posey. Wheather I have the parents wrong or not, I am sure that Susie was Meshacks sister (possibly half sister, by another woman).

Jenny supposed to ne part Indian. I did find a Jpohn BIDDY in Union Co back in rarly 1800's perhaps related to Ann(e).
Jerry jvcv@sbcglobal.net

Mrs. Harriett Miller was Harriett Schoonover dau of Edward Benjamin Schoonover. She married in Lamar co Tx to Monk and had at least Isaac Henry Monk and then divorced and md a Mr. Miller who is not known to me. William Williams md Melvina Schoonover in 1839 in Clark co MO however both were from Lee co, Iowa then Territory of Iowa. Melvina Schoonover Williams' brother Elias Schoonover probably witness to James M. Biddy & Harriett (Schoonover) Monk Miller marriage license.
I am Sandra's middle child. You would probably recognize me if you saw me.You missed a couple of siblings---Bobby, Bettylou, and they also had a brother that died as a child, I think his name was Harold.
Berry Biddy's father was named Cicerow. I found that recently on here but I do not remember his mother's name. Your grandmother was a Dobbs and I have not found anything about there family yet. Mom has been wanting to go see your mother's grave but we have not made it up there yet. That is what started this for me, trying to find the name of the cemetery she is buried in. Mom thaought she could find it but I was wanting to find out the name first, just to make sure. You can call Mom if you like at (770)943-4802.
Hi, Could you please email me the 3 Biddy family photos. I am researching this family for my 4 children, Robin, Paul, Patrick and Michael Biddy. They descend from these families.

My earliest Biddy, is John Biddy (Sometimes spelled Bede) in Virginia in the 1700's. This John Biddy and his brothers, Thomas and Hollis Biddy moved into South Carolina. We find Abendego and Shadrack Biddy there also.

The Biddy men were in the Rev. War and the Civil War.

The family then moved into Georgia in Bartow and Cherokee Counties.

They later spread out further south and west where there are a lot of them in Alabama, Arkansas and Texas.

My childrens Grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Layton Biddy, son of John Biddy. He was born in Georgia.
Thanks so much.
Nina Cobb
Ninajcobb@aol.com
My ancestor, Hannah Bracken, first married a Biddy (first name unknown) and had 5 children by him. She later married Nicholas Bishop in Pennsylvania and migrated to Chester Co., S.C. before 1760. Hannah and Nicholas had five sons who served in the American Revolution. Hannah later migrated to what is now Hopkins Co., Ky. in the early 1790's. Phillip R.
Thank you for the information. A lot of descendents of Meshach Biddy still live in Georgia.

My direct Biddy ancestor was Margaret (Peggy) Biddy who married William Lewis Sams (they were my great, great, great grandparents).
Sine researchers say Margaret and Meshach were siblings - thus a sibling of Abendego. But information I have uncovered in the Eastern Cherokee applications of 1907-1908 indicate Margaret was a cousin to Meshach - thus a cousin to Abenego.

All applications on my Margaret line state their claim to money was through Johnathan Biddy. Researchers claim that Meshach and Abendego's father was Edmond Biddy,

One Blackwell application shows this information: Nicie Biddy, who was their line married Thomas Blackwell. It further states that Nicie was a Biddy and that her father was Meshach Biddy and that her mother was Sarah Ledbetter.
On their marriage license obtained here in Georgia she used the name Nicie Ledbetter, not Biddy.

My great, great, grandmother was named Martha Jane Ledbetter. She married John Sams. On the Eastern Cherokee applications their son, John Rufus Sams, claimed Jane's father was Meshach Biddy, and her mother was Sallie Ledbetter. On Martha Jane and John Sams marriage application she also used the name Ledbetter, not Biddy.

The 1850 Census of Georgia showed Jane living with Nicie (I believe they were sisters.) and her husband Thomas Blackwell.

As I stated above some researchers show Nicie as being a child of Meshach Biddy, but they do not show Martha Jane.
Is it possible that Meshach fathered two families, one from Nancy Ledbetter and the other from some relative to Nancy, Sarah Ledbetter.

It is all quite confusing. I wonder if you or your brother can shed any light on any of the above matters? Also who do you show as being Abendego's father/mother/grandparents?

Hope to hear from you soon. If you wish you can email me direct at snauzer@tds.net

Thank you for any help.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Barbara Sams Lewis
snauzer@tds.net

To Barbara Lewis
So glad to hear from you.The research I have done over the years is of no value if it is not shared with others.
A couple weeks ago i was in Georgia and visited with Dorthy Biddy in Adairsville and we visited a couple of the old graves of our
relatives. She shares much of the interest that I have in our family. We have had several family reunions in Adairsville. Jake Biddy from Trussville Alabama has done a lot to promote these reunions. Our gg grandfather was John N Biddy. I have almost completed a Biddy directory of over 400 Biddy families in the U.S.A. I feel real sure we are all kinfolks. Fred
