I have some reason to believe that my Danish Bie ancestors may have come from Norway originally. I have not been able to locate ancestors in Denmark earlier than the early 1800s but records are very limited online.

Can you tell me if you know if there is a meaning to Bie?

Just snooping around the internet and saw the mention of BIE and GRIMSTAD. My great-grandfather Jens Joseph Bie came -- we believe -- from the town of Bie. He came to the states as a young man and lived in Boston. One of his sons ended up in Wisconsin and produced a whole colony of Bies there. I now live in California. About 30 years ago I flew to Oslo and drove down to Grimstad and Bie. I was welcomed by a local Bie family like a long lost son -- but we could not find records of establish a direct link between their family and mine.

Re: Tormod Bie - Norway to US

I am so happy to hear from you. Sometimes a long time passes after posting a message but it may eventually be seen! I have been doing family history research for many years - first with my two family lines, then my husband's, then our kids' spouse's lines to gather information for their children.

My son was married for a short time to Ingrid's daughter Katie. Their son, Dylan, is now thirteen. Though there were problems between Katie and her parents and not a lot of contact was made, I frequently took Dylan to visit with Tom's mother, Gay. I was able to gather a lot of family information on Tom's side of the family and made copies of lots of old pictures. Gay passed away several months ago after a long decline in which Ingrid did a lot of caregiving. I wanted to let her settle her life a bit before trying to learn more from her side of the family, but things get busy in our home too and I hadn't contacted her yet. Gay did share a little of LaPreal's family. I did meet her once when Katie was here. I would love to get more of the Bie family information, pictures, etc., if you would be willing to share it so I can collect it for Dylan. Could we use email to connect further? jjtaylor(at)ptialaska.net I "coded" the address so it does not show up in an internet search so easily.

Thanks much,
Janice

I believe that the Tormod you are asking about was my husband's father! Yes, he lived for some time in Seward, Alaska where he was a commercial fisherman. It was in Seward that he was married to LaPreal Ferguson - they had two children, Peter (my husband) and Ingrid. Look forward to hearing your connection to Tormod!

I am curious about it too, Have you tried Looking up the surname Bhie, because it is a Danish variation of Bie. There are also listings for people from a town called Bie in Norway by Grimstad.

Bie family in Grimstad

I have detailed information on the Bie family in Grimstad, Norway going back to Anders Bie who was probably born around 1660. There is reason to believe that he is the link to the Danish branch of the family. Does anyone have any further info. Would be glad to share mine.
