Janice, not sure after al this time this will reach you? I believe I may be descended from Samuel Bigford. Someone indicated that my ancestor was from his line. My ancestor is a Catherine Jane Bigford married to a George W. Palmer. She was born abt 1827 in NY. This is all that I have. Any information on Samuel and his descendents may prove useful in checking this possibility? Thank you, Byron
I am also looking for information on BIGFORD (european male) who went to Tobago in the 1800's fell in love with a black woman and had many children. My father Hollis Bigford is probably one of BIGFORD great grandson born in 1949. The BIGFORDS have a family reunion every year in Tobago (bigfordclan.com). Personally, I do not know any of them. Family history is normally lost in the Caribbean. My brother, sister and I were bron in Trinidad. My father migrated to Canada and now both my brother and sister lives in Canada with their Canadian Children. I live in Atlanta Georgia and I am married to a U.S. citizen.
I am specifically interested in acquiring personal property i.e., land in georgia at a fair price in the near future, if any family member wants to pass on family inheritance at a fair value, let me know. Alicia.

John, the first known Bigford of our line was Samuel Bigford, born about 1755 in County Wexford, Baricanu Town (now called Gorey Town), Ireland. It is not know when he came to America - perhaps with brothers who settled in New Hampshire as there were numerous Bigford families there during and after the Reveolutionary War bearing similar family first names.

Samuel's name first appears in records in the early part of spring, 1775/76 when he was drafted in the the Militia from Ballston, Saratoga, County, New York (then called Albany County).

Samuel married first Margaret McDonald, the daughter of Michael McDonald and Sara DuBois and fathered fourteen children.

This information was passed on to me by Jean Cook who is also related to Samuel Bigford. If I can help you, please let me know.

Janice Bigford Gable
Donna, Since you are unsure of where in New York state Charlotte (BIGFORD) BERRY lived, this just might be a clue. There is a Charlotte BERRY buried in the Old Pine Plains Cemetery, now called Evergreen Cemetery, in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York. You can find the listing on the Rootsweb.com website for Dutchess County under cemeteries. Also contact the cemetery...the gentleman there is very helpful.
Please let me know any results.
Good luck,
Rose Mary

Hi Fran, so glad to hear from you - possibly, we are connected through the Bigfords. Samuel Bigford and Margaret McDonald had 14 children:

1. Thomas Bigford - 1774-1877 m . Polly Dodgson
2. Michael Bigford - 1820, unm.
3. Sarah (Sally) Bigford - m. George Lake, m. George Meade
4. Benjamin Bigford - m. Peggy Fralick
5. Samuel Bigford (Jr.) - m. Margaret West
6. Margaret Bigford 1788, m. Truman L. Canfield
7. Allesha (Alla) Bigford m. Nathan Ide
8. John Bigford 1793-1888, m. Polly Barrett m. Emma Crampton
9. Isaac Bigford 1796-1874, m. Polly (Mary) Nichols
10. Mary Bigford 1799-1874, m. Benjamin Dobson
11. Nancy Bigford 1799-1884, Abram Warner
12. William Bigford 1800-1890, m. Maria Tipple
13. Katy Bigford, m. Jacob Purcell
14. Andrew Biigford 1808- , m. Margaret Sheers

Do you recognize any of these names? My ancestor is Isaac Bigford. This fall we went to New York and found several grave sites - think we found Samuel Bigford's grave in Gloversville, New York in an old veterans cemetery; think William was also buried there. Found Isaac's grave in Gainsville, New York. In Medina, New York there is a Bigford Road and my great grandfather's (Charles Ferdinand Bigford) brother's (Frank Bigford) grave. Charles Ferdinand Bigford died here in Manhattan, Kansas and is buried here with his son, Clyde Owen Bigford.

Bigford is such an uncommon name so hope we find a connection to our families. Hope to hear from you again!

Jan Gable
3211 Ella Lane
Manhattan, KS 66502
email: bobjangable@aol.com
Phone: 785-539-0856

Hi, I'm not sure if any of this info helps but my gt.gt.gr.mother
was Lavinia Johnson and she married Charles Bickford. They
also spelled their surname Bigfoot & Bigford. I haven't found info on marriage yet - still searching. There was 4 children -
Stella m/ L.M.Shaw; Lucy m/ Edward Gill; Vian m/ Chas.
Mercer & Charles (unknown). They lived in Jefferson Co., Mo
most of the time. Chas.Bickford was hung in Nov.1868.
Lavinia m/ W.H.Maness in Dec.1874. Are any of them in your
family tree? Charlotte Bigford Berry was my 4th-Great Grandmother, and I know absolutely nothing about her, other than she was born in Vermont, lived in New York and lived in Michigan. I gathered this information from census records. I'm not even sure where she died.

Sorry I couldn't give you more information about another Charlotte Bigford - I hope your daughter doesn't become as much of a mystery as my 4th-Great Grandmother did!

Hi, Jan
I've been going through boxes & boxes of "stuff" from my grandmother & mom & finally trying to make sense of it all. I found some letters to my great grandmother & her mom. Some were written by Charles Ernest (Earnest) Bigford & his daughter Marjory of Ordway, CO, 1916-1918 discussing family relationships. From your information & theirs it seems that William A. who was father to Charles Ferdinand is brother to my g-g-grandmother Catherine (Kit) Bigford Smith. I have bundles of letters to & from Catherine & her daughter Elizabeth Ann Smith Holcomb. There is a scrap of paper labled "Family Record" with a list of all the siblings and birthdates, but no parents; & several photos of Catherine, and also of her brother Thomas (TJ) Bigford. Also several letters from Thomas from the Soldier's home in Quincy, Ill. A letter specifically mentions Marjory & Ernest's letters to Catherine. Will any of this be helpful to you? I'll be glad to send copies of anything & I'd love to know more regarding the Bigfords before William & Catherine. Thank you. Melinda
