Researching the Biggin Family who came to Trumbull County, Ohio from Somerset County, England. Thomas Biggin married Elizabeth Hawkins about 1836. They are listed in the 1841 census in Evercreech, Somerset and Elizabeth's mother Ann Hawkins was living with them and their 4 or 5 children. Thomas Biggin's father was also Thomas and his father was Peter. Elizabeth Hawkins was sister to William Dredge Hawkins who settled in Bloomfield Twp. in 1844. William D. Hawkins is my gr-gr-gr-grandfather. I have additional information on other siblings in England

I did reply earlier to your message board posting regarding Henry Biggin and James Barber information, but I am not sure whether you have read it yet.
Since my reply I have found further information about James Barber's death - Taken from The Graphic, Saturday, April 25, 1885 [Printed in London] p 403
In his sixty-ninth year of Mr. James BARBER, who formerly was regarded as one of the richest men of the Turf, but died in poverty in a public-house at Sheffield.
I think you may have looked at the Lapworth Family Tree I have posted - let me know what you think of it and whether you have any more information I have missed.
Look forward to hearing from you again soon.
Jane Trent (nee LAPWORTH)
I am very excited about your recent Message Board entry and it has given me several more research topics. I will invite you to my family tree so that you can see what I have found so far and some photos. Hilda was indeed the youngest child of Henry and Alicia, and my mother has her date of birth from an old address book as 10 Nov (1884). The brother who worked in the factory I believe is Harry (apprentice cutler) - born about 1866. I would love to see any photos you have of the family and if you have any letters. We also do have some Biggin scissors. Can you tell me how yours are marked. Ours are marked H Biggin, Sheffield. These were probably made early in Henry's career as they do not have the later stainless steel mark of Henry over Biggin & co over Sheffield. The disowned son may have been Lewin, born 18 Dec 1874.
Regarding James Barber - my Dad heard family stories passed down about horse racing and you have confirmed it, though we were not told it was through betting. Some of our family at that time would have liked to have kept that secret. James was listed on Alicia's marriage certificate as a Gentleman.
The Sarah Sellors bit also rings true, although she is spelt Sellas in the address book. One of the Sarah Sellas's was born 27 Dec and we believe we have a picture of her.
I am also communicating with the great great grandson of Lewin (Henry's brother) and hopefully we can gain a lot more information from one another as time goes on. Fantastic information, thankyou.

I'm a descendant of Henry Biggin through his youngest daughter Hilda, who was born in 1884. My mother has photographs of family members including Alicia, and there was also an obituary of Alicia's father James although I'm not sure who in the family has it now. My mother also has a scissors which came through Hilda Biggin from one of her brothers who was working at a cutlery factory - possibly one of those you mentioned.

James Barber was apparently a very wealthy man at the time of his daughter's marriage. His money came from gambling - the story goes that he won a racehorse in a card game on a boat bound for France, where the horse was entered in a race. The horse won that race and this was the foundation of his wealth. His obituary says he owned a horse which won the Epsom Oaks and that he sold a horse which later won the Grand National. His name does not appear in the list of winning owners for the Oaks. According to the obit, he was one of the wealthiest men in England at one time but lost most of his wealth as easily as he won it.

One of Henry's sons was apparently disowned for gambling. Alicia used to send packages in secret for his wife and child - possibly she was more sympathetic because of her own father's story.

From looking at birth, marriage and census records I'm pretty sure that Henry's father Thomas was born in Dronfield in 1805, and Henry's mother Sarah Sellors was from Bakewell. One of his daughters was named Sarah Sellors Biggin which corroborates my theory. The Biggin name appears continuously in Norton parish records as far back as Elizabethan times.
Dave
How exciting to "meet" and converse with another member of my family.
Thankyou so much for your reply and it would be lovely to hear what your Great Aunt knows about any of this. So sorry, it was very late when I posted the message last night - I meant Henry Biggin was born in 1833 in Little Norton in Derbyshire, the 2nd child/son of Thomas and Sarah Biggin. Lewin was Thomas and Sarah's 4th child.
As I think I said, Thomas and Sarah Biggin were reputedly roustabout farmers and not very well off. Lewin obviously bettered himself by emigrating. Henry, as the family history goes, fell in love with Alicia Barber who's father was a "Gentleman". He married her 21/7/1862. However, in order to win her hand, Henry worked hard to better himself and became an apprentice cutler, then cutler's clerk, then a cutlery retailer and manufacturer. This is given as fact by the Census's 1841-1901. Do you have access to these, or shall I copy them to you? I can send just the ones containing Lewin if you would like.
Henry apparently bought and/or started 3 cutlery firms (H G Long and Co, Turner, Son and Naylor, and I E Sorby - I have found his Trademark for Henry Biggin and Co - but have yet to prove the link to the others. I have also found that he bought shares in the Benefit Boot Company in 1897. The slightly sadder but probably predictable part is that following his death in 1905, the Sons(one of whom was also called Lewin by the way) and Son-in-Laws squandered the whole lot within their generation. I may be able to prove this outcome when I hear from the people looking at the Benefit Boot Company.
It would be lovely to hear what you know about your Lewin and as we discover more, to keep in touch.
My direct email is fossicking@tiscali.co.uk if you ever want to communicate outside of Ancestry and don't want to put it on the bulletin board.
Jane

Was excited to hear from you, didn't expect to get a response so quickly. The date you provided was not what I'd expected (1883) as Lewin was born in 1835, is it possible Henry is a nephew of Lewin? My Great Aunt has most of the knowledge of the family history, I will talk to her to get more details about known siblings and inlaws etc. Again, thank you so much for the quick response, it would be fascinating to connect with distant family and discover more of the history.

Dave

Lewin Biggin was the brother of Henry Biggin born 1883 - my Great Great Grandfather.
It is said that their father, Thomas Biggin was a roustabout farmer and certainly Henry (and possibly Lewin) wanted to better themselves - Henry in order to be worthy of the hand of Alicia Barber who he later married.
If you would like more information on Henry and his descendants, please reply to this and I can fill you in. Likewise, if you can give me more info on Lewin and his descendants, I will be really pleased.
Thanks
Jane

JAMES BIGGIN FAMILY

James was the oldest child of Thomas (Biggon) Biggin. He married Judith Allen Feb. 23, 1802. James' siblings were as I can figure it out: John, Thomas, Martha, Maryann, Martha, Hannah and Peter. My great great great grandfather was the third born of Thomas and Judith. My Thomas came to America with his eleven children and settled in Vernon, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Hawkins at Evercreech Church, Pylle Parish, Someresetshire, England. They sailed for America in 1857.

BIGGIN GENEALOGY

I'm sorry, I know of no Priscilla. From church records, Parish of Pylle my understanding is that your James parents were:
Peter Bigging and Mary Brice. James siblings were: John b. 10-24-1761, William b. 1-23-1763, Peter b. 3-17-1765, Cornelius b. 12-14-1766, Joseph b. 4-9-1769, Benjamin b. 4-9-1769, Elizabeth b. 7-11-1773, Thomas b. 5-7-1775 (he was my gr gr gr gr grandfather who married Judith Allen m. 2-23-1802), Charles b. 10-19-1777 and George b. 1-2-1780 and d.
5-15-1785. This is the furthest back I can get. Hope this helps. I have a lot on the Thomas Biggin family in America as my mother was Helen Biggin, daughter of Albert and Fannie Holcomb Biggin.

BIGGIN GENEALOGY

After looking further, I have the IGI Pedigree Chart listing Thomas Biggin and his wife Emma Hughes. Thomas's father was Frederick and his wife Mary Ann. This is not my line. I rather imagine this Thomas was a cousin of my Thomas. I find it interesting that the first time my line comes up with a Frederick is the grandson of Thomas from England. Other than that, no Frederick.

Hello Pat,

This is really great! The James Biggin you write of, son of Thomas and Judith Biggin, is my gg grandfather who came to Newfoundland and settled about the 1820s. For years now I have been trying to locate any relatives of his to exchange data and here you are!!! Wonderful.

We always knew he came from Somerset, and in 1996 I was about to read a letter written by his mother, Judith, which placed him in Pylle. Since then I got a copy of the Anglican Church records for Pylle and have been able to trace the family back to the early 1700s. About the time you posted this email, my wife and I were in England and visited Pylle and when to a church evening service there on the feast of St. James, patron saint of travellers would you believe! Look forward to hearing from you,

Scott
I wonder if his second name is the surname "Collins". Have quite a bit of info on the Biggin(s) family if you're interested.

My apologies...what I meant to ask was James fathers siblings...clearly you have listed James' siblings. Frederick's line are a mixture of Biggin and Biggin Pitt and every spelling combination. Very confusing. I have lots of 1851 census Biggin information but cant sort this Priscilla person out...was she a Biggin or married a Biggin. In IGI and census she has no surname...so keen (too keen) to ask if she was on your list.

Do you have a list of James' siblings? You mentioned he was the eldest. I have a Frederick Biggin b. Pylle, Somerset 1808 mother Priscilla but not sure if he was illegitimate or child of an earlier marriage than I have for Priscilla (William Pit). Frederick married Mary Ann Mitchel in Evercreech in 1834 so we have a geographical connection at least. 1851 Census has Priscilla living with a James - relationship not given. Frederick's line emigrated to Australia.
