I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I'm Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of Curtis. He is actually still alive, but he never knew much about you or Ronald Billings. My aunt jill is alive as well. I googled Ronald Elmore Billings because I wanted to learn about my real grandfather. It's crazy to read about the family I didn't know I had. If you see this, please let me know if you have come to learn anything about our family's history!

I think maybe this is a mix up with another family member. In the 1891 Census William's parents are listed as father born in USA and mother born in Ontario. I agree though that he's definitely our lost relative.

Hey Patsy, Tina here :) family rumours say Wiliam stowed away from England on a ship with a Mr Doran. Another says he "stowed away" in his mother who was pregnant when she departed for Canada. As I have never found any records of his immigration / birth I can't confirm or deny these rumours, I have also asked the Genealogist who is doing the Bilings bridge line if he was able to connect William to that line and he was unable to track him further back than the 1861 census as well, so William is a dead end unless we go overseas and start digging but where to start would be the biggest hurdle.

Sorry I couldn't help more - he's just our mysterious relative - for now lol

Hello EdrieAnneB, My name is Beverly Henry and the "Billings" line you listed is of interest to me as Joseph Billings would be my GG Grandfather. I'm currently try to locate info regarding "NY,USA" reference listed on the Canadian Census' of 1871, 1861.

I wondered if you had any info on "Hazen" being spelled "Hayden" as I found a few records listing Jane and Christopher with children "Annetta" and "Lilly Vera" but last name spelled "Hayden" Also found the same for "Mary Ann" and "William" children "Mary Melissa and Melinda" but last named spelled "Hayden" Not sure if it's just a typo.

Would like to correspond with you regarding the "Joseph Billings" line you mention.

Sarah Billings, Windham, Conn., early-mid 1800s

Hi, I collect antique photographs, and some are the older type in cases. Today I took one out of its case and found that there was writing inside the case behind the photo. It's faint, but appears to say

Sarah [illeg.] Billings
Windham
Conn.

This photo was probably taken in the late 1850s or early 1860s. The photo is of two young women.

Does anybody have knowledge of any Sarah Billings in Windham, Conn. who would have been aged late teens or 20s during that time period?

Mark (Marcus) Billings was shown on Con 4, lot 27 in 1830. In 1842 the plat map shows Widow Billings on that lot. In 1878 the owners were E Billings and N Billings. The widow is Theda (Spencer) Billings, Mark's mother. I believe that the E Billings is Edsil Billings, Mark's brother, but can anyone tell me who N Billings is?
Del Billings

I'm reaching out to see if anyone else has any ideas on this. I have searched for a long time now to try and find anything on whom I be leave could be my 2nd great grandfather and have come up empty handed. I have confirmed names and dates for my grandfather and great grandfather but after them the trail starts to go cold.

My great grandfather Floyd Billings was born in 1883 in 1st Ward Beatrice, Gage, Nebraska, USA according to census information. he married a Myrtle Tinnel born abt 1895 from Cuscent, Pottawattamie, Iowa. They had 8 children from what i can tell 1 of which was my grand father Delbert B billings born 14 dec 1917 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. He wed my grandmother Esther Klassen on the 30th of aug 1957 in Cook County Illinois. I have the marriage certificate and have verified the date on that. But when I get to my 2nd great grand father the leads grow cold.

From what I have found he was born Del Billings (first name was passable Adelbert) abt 1859 somewhere in Missouri. I have found reference to a Del Billings in the 1885 Nebraska State Census that puts him in 1st Ward Beatrice, Gage, Nebraska at around the time my great grandfather would have been 1. He is listed as having a wife but instead of a name being present there is just the letter L. His father is listed as coming from Wales but I can find no reference of a name.

If anyone recognizes the names and or dates of these family members could you please provide a little direction as it has been almost a year now with no solid new information.

Re: Black Billings upstate NY

Chazy Reader Clarifies History Of "Nigger Hill Road"

Found in news paper
plattsburg Press - Republican - September

Chazy Reader Clarifies History Of "Nigger Hill Road"

By Neil or Nell R. Sullivan

Every since I read " Off the Boston Track" about the " Nigger Hill Road" I have wanted
to give you the true story of these two roads which are so confusing.
Mrs. Margaret Hayes, county historian, had given you a report on Nigger
Hill road.
In substance, this report was correct, but Mrs. Hayes has confused two roads of the same name.
one of the Beekmantown-Chazy town lines. The other entirely in the Town of Altona. The first mentioned
of these two roads runs on the boundary line between Beekermantown and Chazy from the state Road

(Route 9), a little south of the brick tavern at Ingraham and in front of the old school house at Ingrabam
and in a westerly direction to the Stratton Hill Road. It is two miles long. At about one third of its length
from the east end it is joined from the south by the Moffit road. It is between the state road and the

Moffit road. It is between the state road and Moffit road a d on the Beekermantown side that the colored

people lived. Obviously it is because of their presence there that the road got its name.
Obidiah, Alanson and Abraham Doody all lived o the south side of this road very early. Obidiah is

known to have been here in 1809. This road was then known as Doody Hill Road. All the Doodys left

Chazy and Beekermantown about 1837.
The colored people who lived on this road were slaves of African birth and were brought to

Beekermantown town by Judge Tredwell in 1793 when he and his family moved from Smithtown, L.I.
to the shores of Lake Champlain at St. Armands Bay, between Point Au Roche and Cumberland Head,
about four miles north of Plattsburgh.
He manumitted a Negro man. Hick and his wife Jane, the next year. Later he set them all free. At this

time he purchased land along the north line of the town of Beekermantown, built log houses and

established homes for them. It is said, he had about 40 in all.
One, phyllis, choose to remain with her master. She is buried on the old Tredwell farm with judge,
and his wife and others of his family in a little cemetery on east side of the state road in a pasture sloping
towards the lake, about four miles north of Plattsburgh. She requested to buried at her Masters feet. In

this cemetery can be found a stone placed across the feet of Thomas Tredwell's grave bearing the following
inscription:

Old Phyllis, the slave
Was of African birth,
And she died long ago, long ago,
And her last sad request,
As she passed to her rest,
Was lay me at old Massa's feet.

The tradition is, that those who lived and died on the Nigger Hill Road are buried in the Ingraham

Cemetery, on the south side. There are no stones to mark their graves, niether were there vital statisics

records kept that early.
Mr. Tredwell was obviously a considerate man to have taken the trouble to give his slaves a good start

as free men. Another evidence of his character is the care taken in the burial of Phyllis.
The seco d road mentioned by this name is entirely in the town of Altona since December 2, 1837. It was

laid out in the town of Chazy and according to the Clinton and Franklin county History by Hurd was the

fourth road to be built in that part of the town. (around Altona). It is mentioned as the road "Over Nigger

Hill".
There are known to be at least two families of colored people who lived on this road over a period of

approximately 40 years. Russ Wheeler was head of one family, he had several children . He was a farm

laborer and worked by the day for many of the farmers on that road and military turnpike. He moved from
there: it is said, that he went to Lyon Mountain.
The name of the others was Billings, Peter, Elijah, Jet and Danforth are names well remembered. Peter

and Elijah Billings are on the 1857 Assessment Rolls as having 50 acres of land. They are known to have

cleared land and picked stones, the piles are still on this property.
No one can recall where they came from or what became of them but certainly they were there and over

a long period.
The Census Record of 1820 shows colored people in Chazy, I find tow people wh0 remember seeing

them, it is no trouble at all to find several people who know about them from their fathers or grandfathers

or both.
This road runs in westerly direction from Douglass Corner, west of Chazy Village, to the Military

Turnpike.
Homer T. Atwood resides on this road on location of the first settler, Joseph Goodspeed, His

grandfather owned land along that road as early as 1855, and was well acquainted with the colored people.
The fact of the colored people living here gave the road its name. There is no exact date of the opening

of either of these roads but from facts concerning them, it would appear that they came into existence

about the same time. We tend, I believe to be extremely sensitive these days about the way we act toward

negroes. and, perhaps after all the abuse they have suffered at our hands, it is right we are so.
However, it is equally disastrous to lean to far backward, as it is to fall on our face.
The suggestion that the Negro race be vindicated by eradicating the name " Nigger Hill Road" from

our maps seems ridiculous to me. Perhaps the word " Nigger " is offensive, but acutually the name borne

this road is a memorial to a very early example of decent treatment of the black man by the white man.
Hello! I saw that too!! Thanks for sending...Not sure how to find the church...I have a copy of the marriage cert. showing it was witnessed by a gentleman and said, "Others". I think William Armenius Billings father was William also, born in 1810...I had someone say that it looked like he might have been married twice...to a Dasha Scanlan, and then to a Sarah Chapman. I can find no marriage of Dasha, who was also born in 1810 and they married in 1829....I'd like to know more about her because I think the children were all hers..but not sure...now I'm trying to find his parents???? I've been on here all day. Struck out!!!

Hi,
Most of the time I try to look up both while I am researching a name. I do have a sub to ancestry, just the U.S. collection though.

Maybe you can find obits of William's "siblings" and "parents" that we presume is him in the census records to see if he is mentioned in them?

Ruth

I found them in 1900 on Heritage quest by looking for all Billings in Illinois. If a search like that brings up too many hits, you can narrow it by birth year. For example on Family search, I would search for a Billings, born Illinois, residence Illinois, with birthyear between 1837-1839 - that is because a persons age will be different depending on when the census was taken. Also, some sites like family search you can search on William Billings, but it won't always work on Heritage quest, as they use exact search. So if I put in William, but the census says Will or Wm. it won't show up.
The reverse also works - if you have a family who's name is frequently mispelled, you can search on just first names and narrow it down by county or birth year.

How sweet you were to reply!! Do you look up both Mother and Father's at same time??? I've just been looking up father's side so far.
I have an actual copy of the Holy Matrimony of William A. Billings of Scott County and Eliza Curtis...it says in the presens of Janes Moore and others and signed. I think you did the same as me...I saw this Marriage 1815-1935 brides name Elyer Curtics....they must have misspelled it. The 1860 census I have a feeling is the real think since William A. was buried in Manchester...not sure how to prove it??
I have Mark A Grave papers that showed the obits...Interesting!!
Do you subscribe to Ancestory?
