Joseph BINDER and family from Newark, NJ

Joseph BINDER and his wife Katherine (Kate) resided in Newark, NJ at least through 1971 when Joseph died. While I have dates of death for Joseph and Kate (SSDI), I don't have the same information on their children. Would love to know where they are buried, which may lead me to Joseph and Kate's burial.

Joseph BINDER, b. 10 Jul 1881 in Hungary, d. Nov 1971 in Newark, NJ (he immigrated about 1902)
Katherine BINDER, b. 6 Aug 1886 in Hungary, d. Sep 1984 in Beach Haven, Bergen Co., NJ ***(I found Katherine listed as Katherine KAISER in Familysearch and believe this to be her maiden name)***

Children:
- Joseph F. Binder, b. 14 Apr 1908 in Hungary, d. Jun 1987 in Manahawkin, NJ
- Mary Catherine Binder, b. 20 Jun 1911 in Newark, NJ, d. ?? (about 1936?? was married and died of "complications due to diabetes")
- Frank Binder, b. Nov 1909 in Newark, NJ, d. bef 1920 (not listed in 1920 census)

Where can I find out where the dates of death of the 2 youngest children and where they are buried?
When did Mary get married? and to whom?

I have the family in Newark, NJ in the 1910, 1920, 1930 census, Joseph's WWI and WWII registrations, as well as his SS application.

I am unable to visit the NJ archives as I live out of state and do most of my research on-line.

Would love to hear from any others related to this family, as well as any opinions on where I can search for the missing pieces of info.

Catherine
Moses Binder - 02-OCT-1720

Hello,

I am trying to find evidence that the father of Moses Binder (b 02-OCT-1720 near Mohringen, Germany) was actually a Casper Binder. Every family tree that I've found here on ancestry.com has it as Casper but I've yet to find any real evidence of this.

On Familysearch.org, I found a Moses Binder marrying an Anna Geiger on June 2, 1742 in Hessen Germany. Although Hessen is about 2 hrs and 42 minutes by car in 2012 from the area of Mohringen, it's still plausable that this is my Moses. Additionally, Moses and Anna sailed on September 21, 1742 on the ship Francis and Elizabeth from Rotterdam and last from Deal to Philadelphia, so it's possible they were married and then sailed a little over 3 months later. The one issue is that this record states that Moses's father was a Moses.

Here's the link to the marriage record:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VCBJ-BSX

Can anyone please share with me a legitimate source that lists Moses's father as Casper?

Thanks,
Scott

I am the great great great grand-daughter of John Christian Binder, Sr through his daughter Elizabeth, who married into the Volz family.

I have recently posted some news clippings on my blog page related to the Bender/Binder families of Sanilac and Huron Counties.

I am scanning these clippings from an old scrapbook that was handed down through my Volz lines and uploading/transcribing them as I find time. I hope these clippings will be of use and interest to those researching these branches.

You can find my blog at: thecozycuzncorner.blogspot.com

Aloha,
~Cuzn Amy

She was the daughter of Maximillian Binder 1850-1925 and his wife Mary Powell 1859-1924. Max was the son of Antone Binder abt 1822-1877 and his wife Julia (??) abt 1822-1877.
Hi Sue. I am the granddaughter of the late Beatrice Binder in St. Louis, daughter of Leo Binder (wife Margaret - although my dad says is was Margueritte or similiar spelling). Leo was the son of Anton and Mary Binder of Prussia. I am new to this and haven't gotten into the international history yet. My dad (Ray Hamtil- Beatrice Binder's son) tells me that there are several active family genealogists locally in St. Louis. Thank you for your post, as it will be helpful down the road. Thanks!
Dan<
I definitely remember addressing Christmas cards to your great grandparents at that address and did send them into the 1960s. We might have sent them to your great grandmother after your g/grandfather passed away. If anyone would remember the cards they would have been from Louise (my mother never used the name Aloysia her birthname), George and Susan Rose. I'm quite a bit older than you. I graduated for Washington High School in 1967! :)
No one talked much about the family history either in my family or maybe they didn't know all that much. My mom became the repository of family photos (not that there were a lot) since she stayed living with her dad until he died in 1944.
This is so exciting to be in contact with someone who crossed our family. I will help you in any way I can.
You can always e-mail me if you don't want to go through this board.

We had always heard Tirol/Tyrol, but the ship records do list Hermagor, and now I have the town Mellweg as well.

I can also confirm that they lived on Marth Washington Drive in their older years, as I remember hearing that from my family as a boy. I was born in 1967, five years after my great grandfather passed away, and the same year as my great grandmother;s passing. My grandfather, also Valentine, and my father, Michael, never talked too much about the family or its history.

As I continue my search, I will be sure to contact you if I run into the names you mention. I will also be in touch if I have questions for you.

Thanks again!

Dan

Dan,

I am sure they are one in the same. I can tell you quite a bit about Mellweg etc. My grandparents and I believe your great grandparents all came from the same village or area in Austria. The name Brugger, Wallner, Flaschberger, Rauter, Jank are all common and probably interrelated as small villages are. I would guess they were either somehow related or friends from the village. It is a lovely area in the Alps near the town of Hermagor which sits very closely to the borders of Italy and Slovenia. I believe Valentine's entry at Ellis Island listed he was from Hermagor. My grandparents came over in 1909 and 1910 with my two aunts. Three more children were born here and they lived in West Allis and West Milwaukee mainly. The churches are indeed Roman Catholic since they all are in that part of Austria. St. John de Nepomuc was in the downtown area and later moved to the west side of Milwaukee. I actually grew up down the street and never realized my mom had been baptized in the original church. Holy Cross is at not a parish either anymore (consolidation), but the building still exists. St. Florian is the parish in West Milwaukee where most of the Austrians settled. My mom graduated from eighth grade there. My grandfather had two siblings that stayed in Mellweg and I have letters written from them to her.
I have done some work on Facebook and have connected to two people on there that may be direct relatives. If you check any people in the Mellweg area on FB you get the same surnames. Brugger is one name I run across as well as Wallner. My mother's aunt mentions the Wallner's in one of her letters and that they got news of the family from them. Unfortunately my grandparents died before I got to know them and no one was all that interested in family history when we were young. Now all the people who have information are gone. I do have some information though so I don't know if any would help you or not. I would be happy to answer any questions that I can. Also if you run across the name Jank,Flaschberger or Rauter I would be interested. We are related to all three of those names that I know of.
Do you have an address for Valentine in Wauwatosa? We used to send a Christmas card to him on Martha Washington Dr. When I would ask my mom who these people were she would say it was her sponsor. I am sure it was your greatgrandparents. But we never saw them. I can give you more about the churches as to actual addresses etc. Just ask away and I will try to help.
Thanks,
Susan Rose
SLRMilw@wi.rr.com

Susan,

I have been living in the Phoenix, AZ area for the past 12 years; however, my entire family is from the Milwaukee area for at least the past two or three generations. I am one of the very few who is not still in the area. My mother still resides in Greendale, and my sister is in Greenfield.

My mother (nee Krause) did a great deal of genealogical research about twenty years ago, so I just began using ancestry.com a week or so ago to enter her records and continue the search.

From what you mention, I am relatively certain that your Valentine and Mary Brugger are indeed my great grandmother and great grandfather. I believe they were Catholic, so I am assuming the churches you mention are Catholic. My mother's side of the family is Lutheran. I am unsure of Mary's maiden name, as I can find no records prior to her marriage. Apparently, she came to the US in 1906 with their eldest child, also Maria/Mary, who was born a year or so earlier. According to my research, Valentine came over in 1905 on the SS Kroonland, apparently to set things up here (?). They seem to be from southern Austria (Carinthia or Tirol); perhaps Mary is from Slovenia (?).

Perhaps the two families were neighbors? I show Val and Mary living at 1371 25th St. in Milwaukee in 1910. I believe they lived in Wauwatosa with one of their children (and family) near the end of their lives.

Can you tell me more about Mellweg? I am not familiar. Do you know anything specific about the churches and/or denomination at which your family members were baptized and married? Every little bit helps!

You've given me a number of new leads to follow. Thank you for that. I will let you know if I discover any connections or explanations regarding our two families. Please let me know if I can help with any other information.

Thanks!

Dan (Daniel Valentine) Brugger
herrbrugger@yahoo.com

I am so glad to finally hear from someone on ancestry.com.
I am afraid I really do not know much at all about the Austrian connection. I have more questions than answers. I can tell you that Valentine and Mary Brugger are listed as sponsors at my mothers baptism. Valentine was also a sponsor of my aunt. My mother was Aloysia Jank and she was baptised at St. John Nepomuc Church in Milwaukee, WI on Dec. 7, 1914. My aunt Theresia Jank was baptised at Holy Cross Church, Wauwatosa, WI July 30, 1911. I do not have any other information as to what the relationship between the families is. I cannot find my other aunt and uncles marriage license at the moment, but i believe that one of the witnesses for their marriage was a Val Brugger. I will check on that. They were Frank Druml and Rose Jank.
The Wallner name came up in a letter from my mother's aunt in one of her letters from Austria in 1948. Something about they had not heard from the family during the war and that the Wallner family had news of the family. So maybe Wallner was a neighbor in Mellweg. I have connected to some family members on facebook and hope to learn more soon.
Don't know if this is any help to you or not. Do you live in Milwaukee area?
Susan Rose

My great grandfather Valentine (MI: Walter?) Brugger left Austria for the United States around 1905 with his new bride Maria Puschnig (or Wallner?), my great grandmother. According to ship's records, he was coming to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and staying with a "cousin" Franz Wallner, who may be related to Maria.

If anyone has any information on either of these families (parents, siblings, etc.), I would be excited to learn more. I have decent information on their decendents and am willing to share if anyone needs such information. Thanks!

Marie is correct, indeed. I do have a family tree but not published - just on my FTM on my computer, which I would be happy to share for like information. I admit I have not dabbled in this for some time, and only in the past few weeks have I begun to re-organize what I had so I can decide where to pick up my various searches. To have a reply after so many years is rather invigorating. You can contact me at jochens2@aol.com. - Sue

And that means your mother-in-law must be Marie. So, yes there are Binder descendents in St. Louis and other parts of the country. Do you have a family tree that I can connect to?

Another thing that might help you is the website German Genealogy: Danube-Swabians located at http://www.genealogy.net/reg/ESE/dschwaben.html
Bega St. George is in the Banat. The names of all the towns in the Banat have at least three or more spellings. Usually one is in German, one in Hungarian, and one in the local language. There are sometimes even more variations. Also, I have noticed in census and other records, the families from the Banat are listed as being from Hungary, Austria, Germany, Romania, Yugoslavia, Croatia, etc. They did not necessarily use the same country from census to census. We would not want to make this easy. I would imagine there are a variety of reasons for that. The only thing that seems consistent is that they all insisted they were Germans. The website was immensely helpful to me when I was looking for German-speaking towns in the Banat. I have a different family in my tree that also came from the Banat, but from a different town. All the same problems applied to that family as well.

I have information on the Binders in Belleview and St. Louis. I, too, have the immigration dates, but I also have information on the spouses and children of some of the names in your post. In my research, I had found that Helen married a Heitz and had one child, a daughter. I am pretty certain this is the same family. Unfortunately, I do not have much information on the family when they were in Austra-Hungary.

Can't make the connection but am also researching my own Binder links which include my great grandmother , Mary E. Binder, 1849-1817, daughter of Amos Binder and Mary Yerger (Jerger). She married Aaron Cassel Freed and had three children, Sara Emma ( my grandmother), Morris A., and John H..The name Morris is not all that common and I find it nowhere else in other surnames so it may be a fvaorite Binder name. These are all Montgomery County folks. I also have a neighbor, Mary Binder, whose father may have been David Binder. She lives outside of Lehighton,Carbon County, PA and has at least one sister.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I do have a lot of ancient Binder history; perhaps we can help each other down the road.

Steve
Sandra Estelle Binder - Born 1909 - Lackawanna Co. - Scranton, Pennslyvania. We are looking for any family memebers that might know about our Grandmother. She was one of 9 Children her parents were Morris and Ruth(Dorman) Binder. We think she had a sister named Mary. Our understanding is she left home at a young age and moved from Scranton to the Bronx, New York City, New York to have a baby and then worked in a Speakeasy with the Texas Guinan Girls. She may have had an Aunt named Pearl.

John Binder of Romania / Maria Binder of Romania

I am researching John Binder, who was born in Romania in March of 1891, and whose mother could be Maria, born around 1867. Both John and Maria (with her husband Michael Gabor) came to America in 1904 and 1905. They lived in Pittsburgh, PA. Am trying to go back more generations with this line.

Also, does anyone know of genealogists in Romania who could do research?

I've just looked on Ancestry and found a Christening entry for John Binder. Born About 1789, Christened 20 Dec 1789. Holme, Huntingdonshire. Parents Thomas Binder and Sarah. Unfortunately the original is not there. I believe this record is part of the Vital records from Utah.
There is also a second entry with a Christening date of 22nd Dec - never very accurate eh!!
I haven't had any luck with Elizabeth's maiden name.

I can't help thinking that there is a link here but I'm not sure how. My 3x Great Grandfather was called John Binder born in Orsett, Essex in 1796 according to the censuses. He died in 1871 in London. He married Lucy Orkendon in 1818 in Newington and spent the rest of his life around the London area. A Carpenter/Joiner by trade his sons seemed to follow in the trade. I have also just come across a Joseph Binder b1787 in South Benfleet, Essex He seemed to move to London at around the same time, after he married Ann West (I think) in 1819, he was a builder and House Agent and again his sons seemed to follow him. The families join when Joseph's son William Binder marries John's daughter Lucy Amelia Binder in 1854.
It is the christian names really - the children were often Lucy, Elizabeth, John, William, Ann, Joseph whereas a lot of other Binders I have looked at with different christian names don't seem to be related at all. These names seem to be repeated in all the families which can get very confusing. I am wondering if John & Joseph could be brothers - I haven't found anything about their parents, possibly your John could be a cousin but I may just be speculating. Please get back to me if you think there could be a link anywhere.
If anyone has any information they can share I would LOVE it!

Thanks so much for your time!
:)Tiffay Miller
