Lucy K Birch is my great grandmother, who married Alfred Preston (1885-1966)in approximately 1907, possibly in Chesterfield. I know this from family information, and my uncle claims to have a certificate - however, he will not let me see it.

I'm looking for a record to connect once and for all, the Alfred Preston who I believe is correct, and the Lucy who I'm sure is correct. Without the certificate of course, I cannot confirm anything 100%

They had a number of children including:

Florence Preston (1907-1948)
Alfred (1909-?)
Frank (1910-?)
my grandmother Rose (1916-2008)

If you have this connection, or can help me find it I would be grateful. If you are related to me through Lucy and Alfred and can confirm little details, that would be even better.

much obliged

Maude Birch Pfeifer

I am seeking additional information about Maude Sarah Birch, born January 1883 in New York state according to the 1900 census. She is enumerated twice in that 1900 census, once as a lodger in Perry, Wyoming County, NY, working in the woolen mill there as a trimmer and also as a boarder of Dr. and Mrs. William (Fanny) Boddy in North Java, Wyoming County, NY. She married Charles Pfeifer and later they moved to Batavia, Genesee County, NY and raised their family. Both Charles and Maude are buried at Wethersfield Springs, Wyoming County, New York. Maude's children were: Pearl E., Florence M., Esther J., Ruth M. and Carleton. Maude Birch Pfeifer died in September 1958. I am not related to Maude, but apparently she was kind of "adopted" by my Boddy family. Please email me at p_tharp@hotmail.com Thank you.
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for information about my Birch descendants. Unfortunately not much is known about the history, which is why I am checking out ancestry.ca. The details that we know are listed below. Please reply to this if you know more.

My grandfather Charles Dickens Birch was a descendant of George Birch (married to Anne Petrie d.1973). George and Anne were originally from England, immigrated to Canada, and finally immigrated to Australia (Perth area). We have Birch family in British Colombia Canada (where my family is from), and many in Australia (specifically Perth.

We know there was a lot of turmoil in the family, especially with regards to the relationship between George and his children. This is one of the biggest reasons why we do not have any clear answers about the history.

I would like to learn more about George and Anne, as well as where they lived in England, as aswell as in Australia.

Any help would be great!

Thank you so much for the information on this thread and in your published family trees (especially barbbirch). I have only been using Ancestry.co.uk for a week but thanks to your information have been able to push my husband's family tree all the way back, whilst the family had been stuck at Hannah and John Birch.

My husband's family is descended from Lucas and Tryphena. From the portrait of Samuel Birch as Lord Mayor we can see a strong physical resemblance to the current generation of Birches, including my young children, and I wondered if anyone else has noticed this.

Does anyone know if there is a connection to the Wyrley Birch family who we from Staffs (now Birmingham) and later Norfolk and Middlesex? We have anecdotal evidence of a link but I cannot find it in the family tree.

Also, does anyone know anything about the Birch, Birch & Co. shop front donation to the V&A Museum? Supposedly it was donated by Lord Kenyon and I am assuming this is due to the De Gray connection by marriage, but if anyone knows for certain that would be much appreciated.

Finally, if anyone does know how to get hold of the O'Neill book, I would be most grateful.

regards,
Tamsin Birch

My grandfather was Platt Hodges Birch. He was married to Mabel Victoria Davidson who passed away July, 1962. They lived in Wash. DC and had 3 children, Merritt A. Birch (deceased)
Mildred D. Dagenhart (deceased) and my mother Mabel B. O'Branovich. She was b.4/1919 and is now 92 years old. Unfortunately she has severe dementia and isn't able to give me any information. My older brother, Richard, and I have both been looking into our family history. I'd be happy to share what we know.

BIRCH John K.

STOVERTOWN: John K. Birch, 87, loving husband of the late June Shattuck of Stovertown, Ohio, died on October 4, 2011 at his daughter's home in Connecticut.

Mr. Birch, son of Ernest Noah and Pauline Kaley Birch and brother of the late Robert Birch, was born on April 5, 1924 in Elyria, Ohio, where his British-born father was manager of the Elyria Lace Factory for many years.

From an early age, John was a skilled technical designer. John earned his Bachelor's degree from Ohio State University. While in the Navy, he was an electronics technician's mate in Guam and the Phillipines between 1944-1946, experiences that ensured that he would never lose his mastery of Morse Code.

John married June Shattuck in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Stovertown in May of 1945. The couple, who had met at dance class at OSU, lived in several places during their life together, including San Antonio, Texas, where two daughters, Nancy Anne and Carol Sue, were born; and Quincy, Illinois, where a son, John Douglas, was born. They also returned frequently to the farm that was the ancestral home of June's parents, Nina and Wallace Shattuck.

Mr. Birch's interest in electronics engineering served both him and his country well. At the age of 16, he was one of the youngest citizens ever to hold a ham radio operator's license (call letters: W3JB), a passion that he continued into his 80s as a resident of Leisure World's active ham radio club in Silver Spring, Maryland. In the 1960s, the Voice of America recruited John Birch to its broadcast division, where he designed the VOA's entire communications control panel, following his installation of the sound system at Rockefeller Plaza in NYC. John's work for the VOA took him to 45 countries and 6 continents where he oversaw the design of satellites and installation of satellite-tracking systems that were integral to U. S. communications during the Cold War era. Mr. Birch was also the author of numerous patents and a collector of antique radio memorabilia, as well as modern gadgetry.

During his long life, John Birch became famous for his wit, his talent as a wordsmith, his love of good books (in later years, he was never without his tiny MP3 player), and his enjoyment of James Thurber and of music -- both classical and modern jazz. He was also a passionate sailor whose boat (a Nonesuch) named the "Puffin" sailed in 2000 from the Chesapeake in Maryland to the New York harbor with son John Douglas as first mate for nearly 3 weeks.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 8 at St. John's Lutheran Church on route 555 in Stovertown, with burial at the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Audubon Society or the American Cancer Society

Muskingum

Hi everyone,
I'm searching for any family, connections, or information about Isobel Catherine BIRCH nee KATARIYA or KAYE b. 1927 Glasgow. Daughter of Isabella Stevens BAILLIE 1905-1941, niece of Jane Rintoul BAILLIE 1899-1994.
Isabella & Jane were daughters of Robert Gardner BAILLIE & Catherine Binnie REID (sister of my Gt Grandfather) both born at Firhill Rd, Glasgow.
Jane was a retired legal secretary when she died at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1994. Her usual address was Carlisle Rd, Southsea, Hampshire.
The informant on her death certificate was her niece, Isobel Catherine BIRCH of Norfolk St, Southsea.
I believe Isobel's mother must be Isabella Stevens BAILLIE who married Bhoja Ram KATARIYA or KATARYA, engineering student, at Govan, Glasgow in Dec 1926. Isabella died Glasgow, in 1941 as Isabella Stevens KAYE wife of John KAYE, civil engineer. Her sister Jane was the informant. Perhaps her husband had changed his name from KATARIYA to KAYE, I don't know.
Isobel Catherine KATARIYA was born in Glasgow 1927. I haven't found her marriage to BIRCH as yet.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards, Vicki

Anthony,

I'm a descendant of Thomas Erskine Birch here in the U.S. and I came across this message board in my research into the family. I actually own a copy of Dr. Bernard O'neill's book on the Birches (my grandmother Isabel Whitney provided him with a fair amount of material), and have been trying to track down a copy of "The Birch Chronicles - A Thousand Years of Unbroken Birch History" for the past few months, as I would love to learn the early history of the family. Is there any way to make copies of the unbound copy you own? (Or perhaps it's under copyright?)

-Matt

Arthur,

I think John William Birch was very proud of his book. He certainly put a lot of work, time, and energy into it. When I contacted him, he was quite gracious and responded with a copy very promptly. He later gave me a pedigree specifically for my line of Birches practically back to the year zero. I think his book and his memory ought to remain alive. I'd certainly recommend talking to his widow to see if she would mind others copying the book and making all or part available to Birch researchers. Would you mind doing this? (As an aside, my grandfather is listed in the book - I descend from the Samuel Birches - Chapter 11.)

Thank you very much,
Anthony (Tony) Durnford De Gray Birch

I can advise that John William BIRCH's book the Birch chronicles a 1000 years of unbroken history of the birch family, was not published it was not bound, only lightly and John William Birch passed away in 2008 and his wife found the last copy of his book in his effects which she sold to me. Unless she got an enormous interest in it i doubt she will republish it if anyone is interested i have his wifes contact i could ask her as a matter of interest otherwise i would consider his book lost with his memory.
Arthur R Birch

Just for the information of all you Birch researchers, a one-name study was written by John William Birch of Blaby, England, approx. 1998. He died a few years ago and I'm not sure if there was a copyright on his book or if his family is providing copies or whatever.

The title of the book is "The Birch Chronicles - A Thousand Years of Unbroken Birch History". The version I have is not bound so perhaps it only exists in an unbound form. It is 218 pages long.

John and I corresponded and perhaps (give me a week) I can find an address in my huge Birch files.

Anthony D. Birch
