I am wondering if our birts are connected I just discovered my great grandfather's naturalization papers and it states he was born in Derry, ireland. He was born abt'1839-1840.his name was Patrick Birt and his father was George. In the 1831 census there is a George in Ballymacpeake where most of the Birt's in Derry lived at that time

It would be very interesting to find out where those connections happen. I'm going to do a bit more research into the family paper making business. I might be able to trace something through that. The company was called Birt, Benson & Birt, established in 1751. They had an agent in Dublin, Ireland by the name of J.R. Duggan. So, I'm assuming they were doing business there as well. John's father was James Birt, who also worked for the company, but he was born in 1795, so he didn't start the business. It might have even been James's grandfather who began the business.

I am 7th generation from my Canadian Birt ancestor, he was suppossed to have had a red haired brother who stayed behind but the early birts here were all Orangemen and it has been rumored that the John Birt in England had been moved to there to escape trouble in Ireland. But it is all just family oral history suggesting that maybe he was Irish but we are not sure. You probably did meet some of that line in Ontario. I have four uncles there as well as their grown sons now

I've met a few Birts from your line when i was living in Ottawa some years ago. I am a fifth generation Birt on Canada. My great-great grandfather came to Canada from Wales to take advantage of the boom happening here in the 1880's in Winnipeg. He worked as a druggist.
I found out his father (John) was a papermaker and carpenter. He was part of a family business that went back to his grandfather in the 1750s which i believed he started after arriving from Ireland.

I am just beginning my research so I can't yet help with the Antrim / Derry connection for the Birt name. However, my great grandfather was Edward Leslie Birt (nickname Spot) and he had a cousin Peter Birt. E L Birt (the first or "ELB I"), my ggf, settled in New Jersey, was a master plumber for the city of Trenton & had a son ELB II. My uncle is ELB III and my father is Lawrence Birt born in Trenton, NJ. ELB I was related to Birta originally of Ballymacpeake (to the best of my knowledge) and as far as I know his cousin Peter stayed there. I have copies of family correspondence to Birts in Ballymacpeake from the 1930s.

My Birt line came to Danville PA then Berwick PA in 1852 from Wales. I have seen the Burt's earlier in Washington county but don't think they are kin to me. Birt is a rare name though and I am speaking with a number of Birts in England and Australia who are related. For my direct line, no one was in the US prior to 1852. Thanks for the info on the name and your brother. Did you have to spell your name for everyone? LOL common Birt issue.

My grandfather was Charles Birt. He was born in Ballymena (so his death Cert says) His wife Eliza Jane (nee Lynn), His father was John Birt and mother Bridget Birt nee McErlane. John had 4 children, Charles born 1874, John,
Patrick and daughter who we believe was Rose/Rosa or Anne/Anna and who went to USA or Canada (not sure if single or married) The 3 brothers all came to New Zealand early 1900 - 1911 and all remained here.

I'm sure this isn't my line, but interesting in the amount of names that are the same! I first find my William Birt (spelled Burt in record) in Washington Co. PA in th 1790 census. He is next found in OH in Greene County in 1800. He died 1817 there and there is a will in that county. I believe he came from Virginia before moving to PA, and traveled with the Harmonious Shook family. So,, a little earlier than your Birts.

By the way, I had a brother named Timothy Birt. His middle name was Gordon, though. My brother, Mark's middle name is Alan! Interesting!
Rebecca (Birt) Hart

I can not thank you enough for the information on Charles Birt. He was a mystery to us all until today. I really hope I can answer any questions you may have about our Birt family tree.
Yes, I am related to all five of the people you listed. James Richard is my father. A few of us are still in Minnesota.
Please stay in touch.
Once again, I sincerely thank you for the information on Charles.

Charles Wesley Birt was born Dec. 28, 1869 to George Wesley Birt and Sarah Anne Mattox. In the 1880 census they were living in Illini, Macon Co., Illinois. Between 1896 and 1898 he married Frances Ina Fleming. By 1910 he was already divorced and working as a Machine man at a mine in Colorado, living in Montrose Co., Colorado. In Jan 1920 he was living in a group home in Fresno City, Fresno County, California. According to his death certificate his last residence was in Banning, Riverside Co., California. He died Sept 26, 1920 in Banning and was buried Oct 14, 1920 also in Banning. I haven't had a chance to make a trip to Banning to find out where exactly. Are you a descendant of Donald Wesley, Patricia E., James Richard, Colonette Anne or Robert Francis? I assume you are still in Minnesota so perhaps you can help me with my research? robbeltz@netzero.net

I thought I would share it with you and anyone else that is interested in researching Birt history.
Here it is:

I believe Charles Birt's ancestors are from Wales.

He had 1 brother, William; and 2 sisters, Lemma and Emma.

Charles Birt's parents were George Wesley Birt and Sarah Anne Mattox.

Charles Birt's paternal grandparents were James Welles Birt and Amanda Maddox.
Wesley is a very common first name in my branch of the Birt family. I am descended from Andrew Davidson Birt, who was one of the first settlers of Wabash Township in Darke County OH. In fact, I am descended from all of the first settlers in this area as family members intermarried! There is a Wesley in every generation, maybe more. There are also a lot of descendents. So Wesley is a very common name. I don't have any Charles Birt in any of my research. But you might want to look in Darke County records.

I don't believe I have anything on this particular person. I can tell you that, in that particular time period, there were a lot of Birts in Darke County, Ohio. Andrew Davidson Birt was one of the first settlers in Wabash Township, around the town of North Star. Thus, many descendents. His father, William Birt, was in Ohio by at least 1790 when it was still a territory. He lived in the Greene County area. He also had a lot of children. I know at least one of his sons, Thomas Birt, moved to Rush County Indiana very early on. Hopefully, this will give you a few places to look for your Mary.

My grandfather, Wesley Birt was his first known son. He was born in 1900.
Charles left the family and we have no information about him.
In the La Porte Co., IN 1870 census Mary Breeman age 41 from NY was listed in James Burt's household with her daughter Sarah A age 8 from Ohio. Then in the La Porte 1880 census, this Mary is now James' wife with her daughter Sarah A. still living with them.

Thus don't have Mary's maiden name but maybe another step closer to finding it out.

I am descended from Sarah (Waters) Knapp, daughter of Catherine (Overmyer) Waters Birt and half-sister of John M.
My first Birt ancestor came here to Canada in 1831 from Sussex England but nothing is known of his family before that. There doesn't seem to be any connection to Birt's in that area today. Many of my older Birt ancestors were Orangemen so it has always been suspected that he was originally from Northern Ireland and just came to Canada via England for some reason. But none of his decendents today know. Sorry no more help, but possibly Irish connections

Dear Rosemary Dietrick

I and other relatives have lots of information on the Birts. Your husband is a descentant of Mary Viola. We don't have much on your side if the family and could use info. I have a genealogy program file I can send you with many of W.W.Birt's descendants information and info relating to W.W.Birt's ancestor's as we have found them so far. We are planning to have a reunion of the Descendants of WW Birt in the next few years in Berwick and are trying to make contact with all of W.W. Birt's descentants.

Email me and we can exchange information. It would also be helpful if you have any photographs of Mary Viola Birt as I have a number of W.W.Birt's daughters but am having a difficult time figuring out who is who. With an identified photo of one of the Daughters I should have better luck in figuring out who the others are.

Timothy Birt
