Birtley of County Durham, England

I am interested in Ann Birtley b. 21 December 1824 in Houghton le Spring, Durham. England. She married Robert Stevens 21 March 1842 in Houghton Le Spring.

Her parents were allegedly Cuthbert Birtley & Ann. I can't imagine there would be too many Cuthbert Birtley's out there but I don't have access to parish records for Houghton Le Spring and the surrounding areas. Therefore, it is difficult for me to try to track him down.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

It's not Cuthbert Birtley, it's Cuthbert Birkley. He married Sarah Charlton, as his brother Thomas Birkley married Dorothy Charlton. The family members are from the Newburn, Ponteland, and Stamfordham areas. I have been talking with a descendant of Cuthbert's in London. Email me and we'll talk more. By the way, both brother's names changed at some point from Birkley to Berkley. Hence the spelling of my name. (After my grandfather added the third "e".) Warm Regards, -Douglas Berkeley

Interesting - I have a Mary Birtley b.1772, Whickham, Co.Durham, (that's next to Houghton-le-Spring) so perhaps she's a gt.aunt? Cuthbert is an old name in the area, so not too unusual. Mary was married to Joseph Cook.

Hi Kathi,

I realise it is some time since you posted your message!! I hope you are still researching your family. I have an Ada Birtley who is my Great-Grandmother and lived in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Please email me, I have tried to email you, but the message has been sent back.
Birtley Ancestors
Judy,

Hi, I am just getting started on my search, but have found that my great-great-great grandfather was named Cuthbert Birtley and he was married to Jane Anne Redchester. They had a daughter named Hannah Sarah Naugle (nee Birtley) b. 14 July 1838, d. 1 July 1893. I also believe that his parents were Cuthbert Birtley and Sarah Charlton. I don't have other dates at this time, but am interested in finding anything I can. They came from Newcastle Upon Tyne. Can you help?

Thanks,

Kathi
nrskas@aol.com
