John,

The Chicago 1880 census shows a "Valentine Bittel". He had 8 children to include one named Albert that may be my grandfather.
He's listed as a Policeman and it shows that both him and his wife (Caroline) came from Hessen Germany. Not sure if this helps but it is a pointer perhaps.

hello john... my john immigrated to pennsylvania like most bittels.. and then migrated to maryland... other bittels went to new york, ohio and illinois... i have run across many of them in my research... but the only way for you to tie in is one generation back at a time... have you searched ancestry.com... i have seen several from illinois in my searches there... good luck... if i can be of any further assistance let me know...

yes... glad to meet you... there are so few bittels in the world... bittel is my maiden name... this john (my gg grandfather) was born in bavaria... abt 1840-42... Immigrated to US in 1853 at the age of 13.... he was married twice.. first to anna in 1861 and had 5 children, joseph 1863, maggie 1865, john 1866, phillip 1868 and edward 1870... he then married mary in 1872 and had 3 children, jacob 1876, george 1882 and kate 1885... other than that i have very little info... does this match up with your john?... please let me know... thanks for your reply... donna :)

My Grandfather John P. Bittel Pittsburgh, Pa was an orphan I am told. Raised by a Punzel family. He was born in 1880's I believe. Did The John Bittel you mentioned have any Children that we know about? Thanks
