Michaela,

Do you have any idea where your grandfather's family was prior to Kansas? It seems that, somehow, they would have to land on the East (or West) and migrate to Kansas. I do know that on my end of the Bittner tree, we came to the US as Hessian soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Or that is the legend that has been passed down. It would have been nice if they would have included names and birthdates, but I guess they didn't. I do know that many of us Bittner's have unusual names. My first name is from a movie "Hong Kong" from 1959. I am guessing that you were named "Michaela" because you are the daughter of Michael. Some others in our family include (besides the four to six persons named "Elvin")a Rietta, Allen, John Henry, Elva, Jane, Clara, and Arthur. I believe there was a Milton and a Jeremiah. Does any one in your grandfather's family have any of the same names that my family does? It is interesting how these names pass down through the ages. My grandfather (that I told you about previously) was a school teacher in Colorado in the 1890's. He was 63 years old when my dad was born. My dad is 69 now. My dad was 30 when I was born. I guess what I am trying to say is that we have spanned many decades with a just a few generations. Thanks for responding to my note and write again soon.

I am the daughter of Elvin Jay Bittner (dob: 5/30/31) of Harrisburg, PA. He is the son of Elvin Daniel Bittner, Sr. originally of Hometown, Carbon County, PA (dob: 4/1869 - dod: 1957) My dad is the second son named "Elvin" in his family. His older brother was named "Elvin Daniel Bittner, Jr." I guess they just loved that name. My brother is Elvin Jay Bittner, Jr. There are many brothers and sisters in his family. Is any one related to us? Please let me know.

Hi,

I would be interested in learning more about your Bittner family. I posted a message on this board recently giving information about my Bittner family. Father Vaclav Bittner and wife, Mary. They immigrated to Canada with children Anton, Anna and Mary/Maria. There might have been more children and there might have been other relatives. Vaclav, wife and children then came to Nebraska, USA in the 1880's and settled in Saline county, a Czech and Bohemian settlement. Anton married in the 1890's to a Mary Kovarik and had two daughters born here in Nebraska. They are in the 1900 census but I can not find them after that. Anton went back to Canada.

I just found information that shows that at least his wife was living in Edmonton around 1943, she is listed as a survivor in her brother's obituary. Then they have been found in the 1906 and 1911 census for Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.

Does any of this sound like your Bittner family.

I am also trying to find where they originated from in Bohemia.

Ania

Hi, I am also looking for Bittner's in Alberta, Canada. They lived in Red Deer and then Edmonton. The family I am looking for is Anton Bittner, b. abt 1869 in Bohemia, wife Mary (Maria) Kovarik Bittner and daughters. For the daughters I have a Helen and Clara both born in Nebraska and then in the Canadian census there is a daughter named Anna. But in the Canadian censuses they have Helen as the youngest so I don't know if the third daughter was born in Nebraska or Canada. The family appears in the 1900 census for Nebraska and then I can't find them.

I have now found them in the 1906 census and 1911 census in Canada in the Red Deer area. I found an obit for the wife's brother who died in 1943 here in Nebraska. It lists Mary as a sister and says she is from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Anton's sister, Anna was my greatgrandmother and she and her parents remained in Nebraska while Anton returned to Canada. The family immigrated from Bohemia to Canada and then to Nebraska where they settled in a large Czech immigrant area. For some reason the son, Anton went back to Canada. An aunt told me that he did come back one time to see his sister.

I would like to find out more about the Bittners, I do not know where they came from in Bohemia or the exact year of immigration to Canada. I think Anton had a number of siblings but do not know if the survived to immigrate.

Glad to share whatever info I have if it is the same Bittners

Here's hoping,

Anita

I believe that Albert and Sarah moved from Pennsylvania (Allegheny, Somerset, Westmoreland, or Fayette Counties) to Montana around 1910 and to Oregon in 1920. Have you any more information?

Well, I just started working on my family tree. Edward J. Dussel is my great grandfather. I have done some work on the family line. Edwards father Peter was born at sea on the way over. he fought for the union in the civil war. Peters father was Dr. John Dussel. Dr.s mother and father stayed in Germany. (Peter and Elizabeth.) Edwards son, my grandfather, Norman died at the approx. age of 33. My dad has two pictures of Norman. We have no other pre 1940's pictures.

yes they were of german decent and settled in the Portage County Ohio are. I know that Edward came to Lorain County. I know that one of Peters other sons, Agustus' family is still in portage county.

I have information about John (Johann), Ernst and Mina Bittner (formerly Buettner) who came from Germany - in fact, Ernst Bittner and his wife Katharine were living very near Frederick, Ina and Willard in the 1930 census. My line descends through John Bittner but I am looking at his siblings as well. Please contact me if you wish to compare information.

Hi, Ruth.

Thanks for the details you so kindly forwarded on Gottfried Bittner. Doesn't seem likely it's the same Gottfried Bittner...mine arrived USA ca 1881, married in Ottawa Cty 1884 to Ernstina Butt, and had 9 children that I know of there in Ohio (Genoa area, between Toledo and Sandusky/Cleveland). Possibly I can check the estate records, though, to see if it's a Bittner relative! Thanks for the clue.

Where did your Bertha live, Detroit only? Detroit's 50-60 miles from Genoa, OH. What were Bertha's birth and death dates? Think I mentioned Gottfried was born ca 1855 in Germany.

I did find a list of Ohio marriages which include several Bittners or variations of the name in Ottawa Cty, including: Christina Bittner m. 1871, Margaret Bottner m. 1883, Fred Buettner m. 1877, Lucetta Bitner m. 1872. There are more in Ohio, but I've not checked surrounding counties yet to see if there might be connections. If any of these names are familiar, please let me kkow.

My own Anna Bittner (dau. of Gottfried and Ernstina) moved to Livingston Cty, MI, near Fenton, and married James Hogan. Quite sure her sister Emma Bittner was there already, brother Amiel and sister Minnie also.

Known children of Gottfried and Ernstina: Emma, Ida, William, Gusta, Anna, Fred, Amiel, John, Minnie.

Best Regards,

Tina
Michigan

The only mention of Gottfried Bittner I have is from a receipt dated April 9, 1909, that suggests he may have been the father or brother of my gggrandmother, Bertha Bittner Lichtenberg. The receipt reads, "Received of Herman L. Spahr, American consul, Breslau, Germany, $83.97 in full legacy due to the heirs of Bertha Lichtenberg, deceased, from the estate of Gottfried Bittner." It is signed by one of Bertha's daughters, Alvina Lichtenberg Garrick, "Vina Garrick, Administratix, by A.H. Fiedbach, Attorney, Cleveland, Ohio."

If you think there might be a connection with your Bittners, please let me know. I also have a portrait of a unnamed woman labeled "Aunt Vina's aunt", and taken in Ohio. I suspect she may be Bertha's sister.

Good luck on your search.

Ruth Held
Asheboro, NC

Do you have information on Gottfried Bittner of Breslau Germany?

I have a Gottfried Bittner b. ca 1855 in Germany married Ernestine also from Germany b. ca 1864. Gottfried emigrated ca 1881-1889 via Census records. The couple lived in Benton, Ottawa Cty, Ohio, according to 1900 and 1910 Census. Children: Emma, Ida, William, Gusta, Anna (my great grandmother), Fred, Amiel, John, Minnie, Isibed (?).

Anna married James Henry Hogan, and moved to Livingston Cty, MI, where sister Emma and Minnie lived as well.

Trying to trace descendants of Gottfried and Ernestine (also called Tina), place of origin in Germany, and ancestors of either/both.

Regards,

Tina Cole
Michigan

I have six brothers and sisters, Arthur III, Kristine McGroary (nee Leonard), Brian Leonard, Cynthia Laurino (nee Leonard) and Jennifer Calvo (nee Leaonard). I looked for my cousins in Rhode island and if they would like to contact me I would love to be in contact with them. Celia has a sister, Adelaide (nee Bittner) who married William (Bill) Rovensky of Rhode Island. Adelaide and Bill have no children. I am also very curious to find our relatives overseas as well.
