Leslie,

You are a member of the group we call the Southwest Virginia Blantons. John and William Blanton appeared out of nowhere in the disputed border area between VA and NC (later TN).

There are many spurious genealogies on the web which connect them to the Tidewater Blantons of Caroline County VA. However, there is no evidence to support it. The genealogies can can be ultimately traced back to a discredited book called "My Father's Family" by Noah Bradley.

William Blanton was the father of John b. ca. 1769, even though one biography suggests that it was John. The 1850 census shows his birth in NC, which could also mean current TN. There is no evidence of a middle initial and it is unlikely, since they did not become common until later.

I will email you copies of Louise McDonald's research on the two families. It is not included in the Ramey books on the Blanton Family Historians site. However, you may want to download them anyway.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~blantonroo...

I have posted corrections here:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/blanton/messages/3219.html

Check this poster's messages on the Blanton forum, also:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-genforum/messagehistory.cg...

Looking at my post I realized that I skipped a generation.

John Blanton was the son of Joseph Blanton b. 1810 in MO. He died on the way to Oregon and his wife Jane Munkers returned to MO while his sons John and Isaac continued to Oregon.

John settled in the Salem area and Isaac settled in the Eugene area. In Eugene Blanton Heights, one of the two buttes in the city, is named for Isaac's family.

Blantons in Oregon

Hi!

I am looking for any information about the branch of the Blanton family that emigrated to Oregon on the Oregon Trail around 1842.

What I know so far:
My Grandfather was Donald Lee Blanton b.1934 in Salem, OR
s/o Melvin Chamberlain Blanton b.1908 in Brooks, Oregon
s/o Raymond C. Blanton b. 1882 in Marion County, OR
s/o John Blanton b. 1835 in Jackson, Missouri
s/o John T. Blanton b. 1769 in Virginia

After that I am a bit confused to what branch of the Blanton Family we belong to. I would really like to know so I can trace our family back further.

The information that I have is from my grandfather before he died. He was very proud of his family history. I did go to the Oregon State Archives and find the land grant that was given to John Blanton when he arrived in Oregon. And I have been to the Pioneer Cemetery in Brooks, Oregon where John and his wife Catherine Sheppard are buried with all their children and other family members. My Grandfather always told me they had an onion farm in the Brooks area of Oregon. If you have any information or want some information please let me know!

Leslie Howerton-Hicks
lhhicks@gmail.com

I am trying to confirm that my great grandfather, Joshua Blanton was the one who is son of David. They are the same age, but I'd really like a birth date and even a death date if known. From the census it looks like David's first wife was Jala/Jaly/Julia and in 1880 He had a new and younger wife Mattie. How can you help me. I can be reached at dmhildebrand29@gmail.com.

I'm excited to hear about Elijah because I hadn't made that connection to David yet.

I'd love to know more about Julia and her family.

This Blanton line has been a brick wall for me for years and only today did I connect Joshua with David.

Thanks.
John Blanton 1819 Tennessee

Does any one have any information about the family of John Blanton, born about 1819 in Tennessee? He married Nancy (1821-1880)and had 6 children: William Carroll, Louisa E, Alpha E, Samuel A, Martha Almira, and D M (female). The family lived in Harden Tennessee in 1850 and he probably died before 1860 as he disappears from the census records after 1850. Martha Almira married James Samuel Beard and moved to Missouri. Samuel married Charlotta and died in Henderson, Tennessee in 1925. William Carroll was in Tennessee as late as 1880, living with his mother in Henderson, Tennessee. Martha Almira was my gg-grandmother. I would greatly appreciate any information you could provide.

I do know that my other Aunt Kaye is living in Howard's house at the farm on Britton Springs Rd and that Tiffany gets the house after she passes. Kaye will know how to reach Tiffany. But from what I understand, she was last living in Jackson, Tennessee and was married to a Steve Smith.I have an older sister, Nevilon and we actually grew up with Howard abs even have home movies of him. Uf I can be of more service, feel free to contact me. Howard was a very fine man and had charisma unmatched to any man we ever knew.

The 1930 census shows a Doris May Blanton with father Wendall and born in Missouri, living in St. Louis, Mo. Her age was 8 years as of Apr 1, 1930, consistent with either birth date. They were living with her grandmother.

A search turned up a birth record for her at Archives.com, but you have to be a member to get it.

She can order a MO birth certificate at:

http://health.mo.gov/data/vitalrecords/

Also, at the Recorder of Deeds Office in St. Louis, if born there.

Cathy,

The 1940 census does not give the month and year of birth, only an age, unless you are talking about a state census. So, I'm confused as to where you are seeing the birth date on the 1940 census.

The MO birth records were recorded with the state beginning in 1910. I can find no mention of any being lost due to fire, or any other reason. Perhaps they were talking about the certificate burning in a house fire, but the state should have her original certificate.

Her sister might be able to obtain a copy of Doris' birth certificate from the local heath department if she lives in MO. If not, she can download the form and mail it in to obtain a copy. You can find those on the MO Health Dept. website at:
http://health.mo.gov/data/vitalrecords/applications.php. Good luck.

Debbie

Thank you!
There is a question concerning the date. I was talking to her sister and their father mentioned some things that indicated that it might not be her true date of birth. Her parents had always told her that their isn't a birth certificate because it was destroyed in a fire. I have all the items that you pulled up, but the 1940 Census shows that she was born in Kansas in Apr 1921.

Since during this period having children out of wedlock was not thought of well and her parents were married in October 1920. So the July date would have made things acceptable. I am trying to help Doris Mae and her sister find out the information.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Cathy

Maryanne Smith was born in North Carolina in 1828 and in 1846 she married Edward K Blanton. They lived in Chimney Rock, NC in the 1850 US Census and had three children (Victoria, John Graves, and Amelia). The family moved west and eventually settled in Kansas. Maryanne on the 1880 US Census shows herself, and both of her parents as being born in North Carolina. I am hoping to find her parents.

Thank you for any help!!
Gary

Thanks for your relpy Robert.
My husbands family decends from Albert G:

Melvin (my husband)
Gerald Blanton
Felix Blanton ( Lyda Marr)
John W Blanton (Mary Jane Ussery)
Albert G Blanton

We think Albert was the youngest son of Thomas and Druscilla And was born either in VA just before they left or in TN just after they arrived. Him being the son of Nelson is an interesting thought.
There is another distant cousin doing research on our brance. She descends from Robert Vanlee, a brother of Felix She lives in Utah. She has Albert belonging to Thomas and Druscilla. I'll have to e-mail her and see what supporting information she has.
I just found 2 living children of Claud(another brother of Felix). I am trying to contact them for any information they might have.
JW Blanton is on the 1880 Greenbriar AR census with May J as wife. He has 4 children and that matches with our family records. John was married in 1873.
Because Felix died so young and my FIL was raised by his mother and the Marr side of the family we have almost no Blanton family history. I am thrilled to be able to preserve this history for our adult children.
Did I see somewhere that you are from Chicago?

Katie

Re: Albert G. Blanton

I am not descended from Albert G. Blanton, but have researched the family. He is in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Gibson County TN. In 1870, Frances is the head of household and a son, John W., b. ca. 1843 is listed in the household. In 1880, a J. W. Blanton with the same background appears in Independence County AR with wife named Mary J. in the household of Ann A. Usry. He is noted as her brother-in-law. Thus, Greg's grandfather seems to be correct.

We do not know for certain the father of Albert G. However, I strongly suspect that he was a son of Nelson Blanton, who died early, ca. 1820. The children of young widows often had to be bound out as apprentices to learn a trade and carpentry (Albert's trade) was the most common.

Hi, here we are months later- I bought the book, Incidents & Experiences in the Life of Thomas W. Parsons 1826-1900. Thank you for giving me the title. It contains the only information that I can find about Jesse being the son of William Blanton- "The first quarterly meeting held there was presided over by Richard D. Neale, and it was Sunday night that the first one joined the church there. It was Mrs. Jesse Blanton daughter-in-law of Mr Wm Blanton, when she came up and gave her hand, Old Brother Neale called out in his sentorian voice, 'There, thank God, the Devil's arm is broken in one place, we'll have his neck broken before the year is out'". About William Blanton- "Our nearest neighbor was John Blanton, a young married man with one or two children, the next was his father William Blanton, the first settler in that County which occurred in the year 1800. Mr. Blanton had a large family most of whom were at home yet."

I don't know if you own the book yourself or were just quoting from it. If you don't and would like a scan of the pages for your documentation, I would be willing to scan them in for you. Gretchen

William's wife,Elizabeth Gilley( d/o of John Gilley, Sr.)died Aug/Sept 1855. On Aug.5, 1856 he married a widow( Elizabeth Creech, d/o William & Susan Wells. On the marriage certificate he listed his parents as John & Elizabeth Blanton. John, the father, was 1st on the 1793 Russell Co. Tax List & last on the 1820 Lee Co. Census. William was 1st on the 1834 Lee Co.( Eastern District). His grandparents, William & Hannah Hobbs Blanton, went to Warren Co. TN after 1804. I do not know where John the father migrated, but many of the Blanton cousins did go to Missouri from 1830-1840.

Re: Looking for Lugenia Blanton

Thank you for the ideas. My uncle, just told me that Lugenia's maiden name was Raynor and that her family had a farm in Cumberland County, close to what is now known as Ft Bragg. I have done searches over and over again on Ancestry..to no avail. It is possible that her father's name was James...but, that's just speculating on the families in the area at the time. Once again, because her birth is after the 1880 census....she has become a very allusive individual...not to say an obsession!!!!

He was in Jackson County MO in 1830 and Platte County in 1840 and 1850. In the latter he may not show up in the index, but he is next to Warren D. Blanton. It is possbile that William went with John, but returned to Lee, since he does not appear in the 1830 Lee census.

Elizabeth Wiseman was the wife of John Blanton of Monroe County VA. We can trace him to KY and In. The bad information originated with Noah Bradley's "My Father's Family." He confused several Blantons with the same given name.

There is some good research on the family by Louise McDonald. Some of it is in posted on the Blanton Family Historians Site at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~blantonroo...

Email me at rbsgenealogy@ameritech.net and I will send some more of her research that was not included in the book.

One descendant of William b. 1799 has been tested at www.smgf.org, but they keep the names secret. You can find his lineage by doing a surname search and clicking on the pedigree button on the results page.

Have you checked with the Register of Deeds in Cumberland County to see if your grandfather filed a delayed birth certificate? It would require proof of the parents' names.

If he filed for Social Security, you can get his application at:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jsp

Even if he is not in the Social Security Death Index, he may still have applied if he was still living when SS was started.
