Hi Christine
Thank you for the info. Yes, I managed to get that also from the special collection at the Mitchell Library in Sydney. The other thing I was going to ask you if you know of a book that is being written about the history Tongan Defence Forces and the beginnings of the Tonga Royal Guards?

I have the original of a hand-written note by Her Majesty Queen Salote asking Hon Ve'ehala (Leilua) to find out from the Lui clan in Fua'amotu the origin of "the papalangi" who is the father of "Lui". Apparently, the queen had heard from her father King Tupou II about this palangi who set up the Royal Guards and was given the Tongan name "Mafile'o"...Queen Salote thought it would be prudent to note this palangi man as the one who established the Guard and that it should be part of the RG's history.

I have not searched the births register but would need to be in Tonga to continue this rather exciting project! Cheers and thanks.

Hi Elizabeth

Thank you so much for this very useful information. That will certainly help me track down passengers on various ships around that time that arrived at Tongatapu. I have a hunch that my great great grandfather may have used various surnames, hence the difficulty in finding his movements. Furthermore, his other descendants by different women knew him by various names. What an interesting man!

I know that he was the one who was asked by the king at the time in Tonga to set up the Tonga Royal Guards. I am yet to get to the Palace Office in Tonga to research this further.

Thanks once again Elizabeth and cheers for now!

Kilisitina

Hi Kristina,

My name is Elizabeth, I'm a decendant of Paul Bloomfield who very likely may have developed a friendship with your forefather Bernard Johnson as he also served on the ship OHIO. I have a document that states that Paul Bloomfield was discharged in Tonga, 1869 from the ship GEORGE VUNA. It also mentions another ship crew member by the name of William Edwards who was also discharged in Tonga but am afraid no Johnson. Maybe he arrived on a different ship? Check with ships that departed from Sydney, New South Wales as the George Vuna departed from Tongatapu to Sydney.
Good luck.
Elizabeth

Hi! The information you posted is very interesting. I am a descendant of one of the three men that arrived in Tonga with Paul S. Bloomfield. My ancestor, as far as I know was Bernard (or Berhardt) Johnson. Johnson was known in Tonga as Simesoni and was given a Tongan name Mafile'o by a member of the royal family. Johnson was the man who set up the Tongan Royal Guards. The other men that accompanied Bloomfield were Knight and Percival.

Johnson was my great great grandfather. He enlisted in the Navy Regiment in 1862, was a private in the 19th Infantry Regiment Masschusetts and transferred to the Navy Regiment in 1864, discharged in 1866 and re-enlisted in Boston in 1867. I believe he served together with Paul S Bloomfield on the ship "Ohio" and possibly developed a friendship there which brought them together to Tonga.

Does anyone know the name of the ship they arrived in to Tonga? My problem is tracing the actual name he used in Tonga. He fathered a child (Henry Lui) with Mele Taufa (daughter or sister of Ahio from Kolovai). Johnson was given a lot of land in Fua'amotu and the Lui family live there to this day. Johnson may have fathered Manukauvai or his mother/father, a woman from 'Ata'ataa and Robert Hurrell's mother (Sue? who is Evelini Faletau's mum). I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who knows something about this man.
Thanks...Kristina

I should have advised everyone, some months ago, that I finally found out exactly when Paul Bloomfield left England for Australia, and then on to the Pacific Islands, as it proved, beyond any doubt, that HE (Paul) WAS MOST DEFINITELY NOT INVOLVED IN HIS BROTHER'S MURDER IN ENGLAND. Paul had left England some time before his brother was murdered, and therefore was not responsible for the murder.

I've just read your details about Isaac Bloomfield 1760-1811. He is also on my direct line, and I wondered whether you have any details concerning his older sister Elizabeth 1755. We understand from a letter she sent to her brother Robert (the poet) that she went to America and was living on the Potomac in Georgetown. We're not sure whether she married or was single and was maybe a teacher like her mother Elizabeth Manby 1735-1804.

An update: recently I found out that Caroline's last name (some where down the line) might of originally been Dillow (from England). On her tombstone (on the left side as you're looking at it) is the name David H Dillow. This is most likely her father. But by all accounts her last name is Dellow and his has been written as Dellow on things like her marriage cert, etc...
Please note that I've also found a David M Marper but I think this is a typing error done by the volunteers that read the original papers to put up online, due to the fact that it looks like an M but is supposed to be an H.

Leah was my grandmother, she never talked about her biological mother. She only said that she had died in childbirth, was not married. My mother believed that Leah's mother was very much alive, had a photo of her at one time, but Leah destroyed it from what I understand. They lived in Stitum Ok, a very small community. Leah had daughters, Nelle and Lois. Lois was killed in a fire, Nelle died a few weeks ago.
Pam

I don't know much about my Dad's side so much, but I know he has a Bloomfield side. Everyone knows me as Lilieta but my first name is Sofaia/Sophia. My Mom has mentioned Paula Bloomfield before & I don't know the rest. But as to my understanding, Sofaia/Sophia is my grandmother. Am I even on the right post? Anyways, I hope to get a better understanding of my Dad's side of the family.

Thanks for doing the transcriptions, but I'd just like to point out one thing: you have listed, several times, "Efther" or "Efthor" etc when it should be "Esther" or "Esthor." I'm not sure exactly when it changed, but during the 1600's and 1700's there were two types of "s"s, one used often when it appeared in the middle of the word and another (what we use today) for the beginning and end. The one in the middle looks a lot like an "f" but not exactly. You can see examples of handwriting here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genepool/letters.gif, and it can also be seen in hornbooks (which children used to learn their letters): http://www.iupui.edu/~engwft/hornbook%203.gif

Hello

I have emailed Terry to ask if in researching Paul Bloomfield if there can be found references to a couple of unconfirmed things I came accross in my own genealogy enquiries. Please remember they are based on heresay only, so it would be good to know if it is a fact.

The first being was Paul's father an Ambassador for America sent to Tonga?

Was Sela Married to both James and Paul Bloomfield as stated on the LDS site and also a couple of long ago references I came across (and did not take enough notice of) that suggest Sela was married to two Bloomfield brothers? This is relevant as a query in light of what Terry has relayed, because James was deceased in 1867.

Terry's information is very comprehensive. If I could just- for what its worth, pass on two observations having looked at the documents, see what you think?

I think that Paul Bloomfield was born in Boston Massachuttes and perhaps immigrated to England, before returning in the 1860's to fight in the Civil War. He was in the US for over a year before finding his way back to England, at what seems near the time that his brother James was murdered. I noticed in the detailed newspaper article of the time, there is a reference that his Fiancee` stated that she was under the impression that he had told her (by letter) that he was to meet a stranger from Prussia (his parents home town perhaps?) this appears to be the day he was murdered? So the co-incidence of this meant that Paul became prime suspect, having previously been seen in his brother's company prior to his disappearance.

It raises the interesting point that you would not refer to your brother as stranger, but the police make no particular reference to this, the article just says Paul was a suspect?

In the document it also says that James was going to give Paul money for his trip to Australia? This suggests that Paul was already thinking of travelling and did not flee to escape prosecution?

In conclusion it might be wise to not automatically assume he had anything to do with his brothers unfortuneate demise.

Thankyou Serenity

Amanda, I have come upon data that indicates that Paul Bloomfield's original surname was Blum, and he was suspected of the murder of his brother, James, in England, in 1866. He then fled to Australia, Fiji, and finally Tonga where he settled and died. The Blum family were originally from Germany, and some newspaper accounts of the murder of James Blum indicate that their father had come over to England, where he died, and I do believe that this may be the Eliezer Blum who died in England in 1860. I am not a relative, but have a major interest in sailors who served in the Civil War, of whom Paul Bloomfield was one. He indicates, in his enlistment and discharge papers, that he had been born in London, England, but, some decades later, when he was applying for the pension for his service in the Civil War, he stated (almost certainly falsely) that he was born in Massachusetts.

Dear tfoenander,
Again thank you for the information, I imagine it may come as a surprise to many.
Just wondered if you are able to confirm the following, - while researching the Bloomfields it was suggested that Paul's father may have been sent to Tonga as an American Ambassador. Also was Paul's father's name Elizer and his mother's Sophia? Did he also have a sister called Helen and another called Mary ? This is stated on the LDS site. There appears to be some information that is not correct.

Another point you may be able to clear up. It looks like Paul's Tongan,(& also part American) wife Sela is shown as being married to Paul's brother James, which obviously was not correct. I have also heard that Paul had natural children also. I am a decendent of one of Pauls sons', from his marriage to Sela, namely their son Vuni, he also had a child of natural issue, I am decendent from her and very proud to say so.

Would you have any information regarding Vuni Bloomfield, particularly his relationship with Mele Latu? (known by other names)

Hope my queries are clear in their meaning.

Many thanks
Serenity Bloomfield

Also do you know about Eliza Morey connected to Sela? (very interesting)

I was doing research on Union Navy sailors who served in the Civil War, and came upon the pension papers of Paul Bloomfield, as well as some newspaper articles from England, about the murder of James Blum, who was indicated to be Paul's brother. Some of the accounts give a description of Paul Bloomfield, also stating that he had been a sailor in the Civil War. A couple of the newspaper accounts actually state that Paul was a suspect in the murder of his brother.
Since I have an account with the FOOTNOTE web site, where one can read original documentation, I will be able to send some copies from Paul's pension file. I won't be able to send the whole lot, as there are quite a large number of pages. My e-mail address is tfoenander@hotmail.com
I think Paul's pension papers do include his parents' names, though not the grandparents.

Thank You so much! This is really interesting facts about Paul Bloomfield. May I ask how did you come across on the fact that he was a suspect on his brothers murder? I have been trying to find some documents on Paul Bloomfield serving in the American civil war. Do you have such a copy? Also do you have full details of Pauls parents and grandparents name? Can I also have your email address?

Thanks again!
Elizabeth Kikkert

Paul Bloomfield's original surname was Blum. He had a brother named James, who was murdered in England in 1866, and Paul fell under suspicion, as there was a notice put out by the police, in an attempt to search for him. By then he had fled first to Australia, then later to Fiji, and finally to Tonga. The Blum family were indicated to have originally been from Germany, but lived in England for many years. For some reason Paul changed his surname to Bloomfield, and enlisted in the United STates Navy where he served during the Civil War. In his enlistment papers he states that he was born in England, but later, when applying for the pension, changed this to Massachusetts.
Will be glad to correspond with anyone, in relation to my own research on sailors in the Union Navy, and Bloomfield.
