Re: Sidney Bloyd

The 1850 Monroe County, Illinois census taken for Moredock listed Sydney Bloid age 9 living with his parents James Bloid and Mahala Bloid. James Bloyd and Mahala Pate married on 13 November 1829 in Sangamon County, Illinois. The correct name seems to be Bloyd rather than Bloid but this was as shown.

Sidney Bloyd married Mrs. Elizabeth Lung on 9 April 1879 in Fulton County, Illinois and they were listed with children from Sidney's earlier marriage. Sidney Bloyd next married Mrs. Sarah Bloyd on 15 October 1887 in Scotland County, Missouri. This was where his son James lived.

Sidney Bloyd age 67 born Illinois was next listed in the 1910 McDonough County, Illinois census living with wife Adeline. Sidney Bloyd age 78 born Illinois was listed in the 1920 Cole County, Missouri census taken for Jefferson City. He was listed as the father in the James Robert Bloyd family.

In 1930 Kit Carson County, Colorado census taken for Burlington, Sidney Bloyd age 78 born Missouri was living in his daughter Emily M. [Bloyd] Ruddell household and called her father. Emily M. Bloyd age 2 was listed in the Riley Bloyd household in the 1870 Hancock County, Illinois census but apparently not his daughter.

My research has been to try and identify the Pate families that lived in Sangamon County, Illinois and gathered the Bloyd families lines who married into Pate line.

Re: Bloyds Bluff in Green County, Kentucky

Thanks for the photo, Jeremy.
I do not have access to Rebecca's diary. I only have seen the part published in Edna Bloyd Nichols' book about the Bloyd's. The entries included in the book were from the Civil War era. Edna stated in her book the diary was in the possession of her great-great niece Mary Matherly Coffey.
The book was published in 1980. Mary Elizabeth Matherly was the wife of William Stanton Coffey. They are both buried in Hogards Chapel Cemetery. He died in 1951, she in 1985. They had two children, John H. Coffey and Flora Gertrude Coffey. I believe her son John H. Coffey preceded Mary in death, so it is likely the diary went to her daughter, Flora Gertrude Coffey Wade. Gertie was married to Gordon Bruner Wade. She may still be living, but I don't know where. The Wade family members are buried in Ladies Chapel Cemetery. Bruner and Gertie lived in the Webbs area and had two children; Becky Jo Wade, b. 1947 and Rita Sue Wade, b. 1949. Perhaps they would know about the diary, provided they could be located.

Bloyds Bluff in Green County, Kentucky

WANDERING AROUND BLOYDS BLUFF - By Russell Perkins - Nov 9, 2005
Yesterday was one of the warmest November days I can remember. Fearing it may be the last day of the year suitable for riding I loaded up the Ol' Shadow and headed south. I rode to the area where the three county lines of LaRue, Taylor and Green intersect near Corinth Baptist Church. Leaving the ridgeline near Hibernia, I entered the headwater area of Big Brush Creek at Poplar Grove Methodist Church. I followed the road along Brush Creek and stopped at the old Bloyds Bluff cemetery. Henry Webster, Barbara (Dewitt's) husband, had recently cleaned it up and it is one of the better maintained very old cemeteries in the area.
The Bloyd's buried here are from the family of William Bloyd (1750-1809). William Bloyd was born in Scotland. He came to America and after moving from Maryland to North Carolina and South Carolina, he came to Green County, Kentucky in 1805 with his wife, Keziah Barsheba (Lord) and nine children.
Stephen Bloyd and his bachelor brother William, were the only children of William Bloyd to remain in Green County……. the other children all left Green County and moved to Indiana, Arkansas, and points west......all the way to Oregon and California, where there are many Bloyd's living today.
The burial location for William and Keziah is not definitely known to me. They are possibly buried in this old cemetery along with their son Stephen. Stephen and his wife Nancy (McCubbins) died about 1848.
There are over 50 readable headstones and there are easily twice that many fieldstone markers for burials not identified. The oldest marked headstones belong to Joseph Henry Bloyd and Martha A. Pierce, both were buried in 1856. I believe the cemetery was used much earlier and possibly as early as1800. The last known burial in the cemetery was in 1936 when I was only three years of age.
The clear water of Brush creek in this area runs over a limestone surface. The valley is very scenic. If I did not have a home and was looking for a place to live, I would choose this place. The house that served as the Post Office in the Bloyd community still stands. The Bloyd grist mill was located across the creek from the Post Office, just above the bridge that leads to Taylors Chapel Methodist Church. The mill was fed by a large spring that empties into Brush Creek at this point. The mill was written about by Rebecca Bloyd, dau of John Bloyd who was a son of Stephen Bloyd. She never married and was a prolific writer and wrote letters to her kinfolk that had moved west. Some of her letters are in the Bloyd book written by Edna Bloyd Nicholas in 1980. Many of the families that lived in the area were mentioned in Rebecca's writings. She wrote about the infamous guerillas that raided the area during the Civil War and killed my great-great grandfather, William C. (Curley Bill) Thompson.
In 1862 Rebecca wrote to relatives:
"After the elapse of a year, I now write to you. We have not heard from you, for better than a year. We are well. Pa is building a new mill. The foundation was layed (sic) last Monday evening. He will have it working in two or three weeks to get the wall up and will be glad of your assistance. The wall will be seventeen feet high to the first floor. Mr. Isaac Salsman is blasting rock to under pen the mill. Pa intends it to be built like Mr. Brownfield's of Buffalo, Kentucky."
There are no remains of the mill and nothing to firmly establish it's exact location. I wandered around the area and did a little daydreaming. . I could easily imagine the old mill and its surroundings.
The old Bloyd home place is a little further down Bloyds Bluff road. The house is of log construction and in later years it was covered with weatherboarding. I believe the house was built by Stephen Bloyd, possible with the aid of his son John who lived there during the Civil War. The house dates to at least 1830-1840.
Can you picture Rebecca sitting by the fireplace and writing,
"Saturday morning, it is raining. Pa and the boys are shelling corn, Mother is spinning, Lucy is spinning too Mary is knitting, Mr. Thomas Nelson, is living in the house at the Mill. He has been tending the Mill, for three years and is the best miller Pa, has ever employed." and later she goes on to write,
"The Sun has made its way thru the thick clouds, the boys have gone out in the field to work. Pa and Mary and G. have just come in from the orchard where we have been setting out sweet potatoes today. Pa is perfectly ball, he has not a hair on his head, he has been ball for two or three years. He has no eye brows or eyelashes. We have a porch that goes all way across the front of the house. Mothers room is sealed and has two twelve light windows in it."

Sep 21, 1864, Rebecca wrote in her diary: "This is a day long to be remembered on a cold day. The Greensburg Yankees, killed the Guerrilla George Wright, on that day he fought them, until he fell, mortally wounded. He died with in two hours after he fell. Having never been any Rebel Guerrillas thru here since that memorible day until Feb. 16, 1865. Guerrilla Capt. Marion, with fourteen men robbed old Mr. Dick Skaggs, Jerry Skaggs, and Daniel Estes, Danel Williams and set fire to John Walkers house because he would not give money. They put it out themselves. They met Louis Bloyd, in the road and robbed him of $30.00 and robbed John H. Bloyd, they robbed Mr. Hagans store of $100.00 worth of goods. He had three ladys hats, they put them on and walked out and said "This is the way, we gay Guerrillas go." They then came on a James A. Howell and took some whiskey from him, they met Charlie Mat Buckner and robbed him, they came to James A. Scott and took from him a horse and broke his musket and told his family, I'm (if he?) was at home. They would kill him for he had often reported to them as a Home Guard. Next they came to Gabe Warrens and combed his head with their pistols and took his money. The went out to Dr. Hazelwoods, there they stayed all night, there from Dr. Hazelwood, they took on pair of boots and one pistol. From the Drs. they went to Jim Edwards. Jim was not at home, they beat Mat and robbed him of his money and boots, took his hat, left ladys hat, in the place of one. They told the children to tell Jim, that if he would go to John Bloyd and surrender his arms to him and take the oath, they would never pester him any more. From Edwards, they went to Bell Lees and gave Henry a whipping. And took a quarter from old Mr. Lee, inquired for Bill Lee, said they intended to kill him. Mrs. Lee told them he had gone to Munfordsville, From Lees they went to George Drewens, they beat him and said they intended to kill him, then ask his name. He answered George Drewin. The Capt. immediately ordered his men out of the house, they all went out and then came back to the door and ask his pardon for treating him so, said they was mistaken, they was at the wrong house. They then left him and went to William C. Thompsons, they killed him. They shot him three times. They also killed one of their own men, for begging for Curly's life. The man was on his knees with one hand lifted towards heaven, praying for Curly, when they shot him and killed him, they burned up the house and ever thing in it. Shot Curly's two horses."
The guerrilla was buried in a shallow grave beside the road between Wards and Oak Ridge Church. Curley Bill was buried in the old Sand Lick Baptist Church cemetery. That cemetery is in the woods near Sand Lick Creek at the Taylor-Green county line. Curley Bill's gravesite is not marked. There is not much there to even identify the cemetery location. Just one marked tombstone and some fieldstones.
George Drewen's died in 1866 and his wife, Celia (Perkins) died in 1897. She is buried in Buffalo cemetery. She was a sister to Tabitha Perkins, mother of Mary Ann Perkins who died a tragic death in a horrible train wreck at Bardstown Junction in December 1888………but that's a story for another day.
Me and the Ol' Shadow headed back out of the valley and turned for home.
How long have you been doing research on the Bloyd's? I have been doing this on and off for years, depending on school and work. Do you have any of the other books that contain Bloyd research? I was just entering some info. on ancestry into my family tree that I have there, and realized that I need to go through and look names over again. I think that I have accidently combined some spouses and siblings.

By the way, I have a Betty Wheeler for a relative as well.

If you are still looking for info on Mary Rebecca Bloyd, I have a family history book that list her parents Stephen Bloyd and Mariah Warren. that goes back a few years prior to that. My great Aunt, Thelma ( Bloyd ) Sester wrote it in the late 70's and it includes several family documents such as wills and photos. Could have a copy made and ship it to you if you want it. No Charge, Just glad to help find where the family tree grew out of.

Hi!
Do you have info on a LaRella (Rella) Bloyd? She is my gggrandma. I don't know anything about her except that she married Lloyd Wardlow from Missouri and had one child, Myrtle(aka "Billy")Viola Wardlow b. April 26, 1901 d. July 4, 1957 in Van Nuys, CA. LaRella's grandson, my late grandfather, Richard Donald Pettinger (born Donald Richard) was just starting to research the Bloyd family line when he died of Colon Cancer. It is a privilege to carry on his research. I sure would appreciate any info. Thank you.

Karina Pettinger
