my father William Nelson Boatner

My father was William Nelson Boatner from Cushing, Ok and Texas. We are white. His sisters were Evelyn, Deenie and Louise. Evelyn and Deenie both told me that their parents were both Boatners that were cousins that married. Evelyn laughed hysterically when I looked shocked. Bessie, their mom was disowned by her parents because she insisted on marrying Mr. boatner. Evelyn told me that her Grandma on her mother's side would visit when they had a new baby only to count the toes and fingers, then leave! Deenie had a son named Clarence and Louis had a son named Quentin. I met Evelyn in Cushing before she died in approx 1980. Deenie was living in Dallas at the same time with Clarence who had changed his name to something else for theater. My father, William Nelson died in 2009. My father said that his father was a scallawag who never stayed home. He brought groceries and left them on the front porch during the night. Dad was a bootlegger that moved from town to town with his bottles and lived in tents near rivers. My father had been a difficult child who had been sent away to live with his father when he was 12-13. Does any of this ring a bell with you other Boatners??? I sure need some help here.

Re: Lottie Belle Boatner

Lottie Belle's mother was Amanda Warren (1852-1905), the daughter of Charles Warren (1811-1898) and Sidney Isabell Scalf (1820 d ?) They died in DeKalb County, Alabama but had also lived in Habersham & Dade County, GA, Jackson Co., Alabama. Amanda may have married
Henegar Woodville Holleman but married James Alexander Boatner after his first wife, sister to Amanda, Rebecca Warren died (b 1854- d 1890). Rebecca is buried in DeKalb Co., AL (Valley Head area) where her parents are buried.
Rebecca had requested her sister, Amanda, to marry her husband after she died (she had been very ill after the birth of her last child, Fred was born). Amanda married James "Bud" Boatner but left him after the last child left home.

Dr. John Wesley Boatner and wife Sardeania Maudena Manda

I am seeking information about this family. Dr. Boatner moved from Tippah, MS to Tarrant County, Texas by 1878 and lived for a few years in Smithfield [now North Richland Hills], Texas. He attended some of the Confederate Veteran reunions with the MS units, but I can find no official civil war records for him. He may have been in a militia. In the 1880's, the family moved to Denton County to Lewisville. There were at least five and perhaps as many as seven children born to them. At least two of the infants are buried at the Smithfield Cemetery and maybe as many as four. Deanie his wife died in 1889 due to complications of childbirth, and Dr. J W. Boatner died in 1904. Both of them were buried at Smithfield in Tarrant county. There were three children who survived into adulthood, Cecil Boatner born in 1979, Hortense Boatner born in 1885, and Peter B. Boatner born in 1882.
Hortense died in LA, CA in 1864, Peter B. Boatner died in Colorado Springs, CO in 1961. Neither Hortense or Peter ever married it is believed, but Cecil married at least twice. She married Jesse Wesley Ragland in Dallas, Texas in 1897 and was divorced in 1908. There were three children born of this marriage and two of them survived into adulthood, Hortense Ragland, born in 1906, and John Boatner Ragland born in 1901. John died in LA, CA in 1973. Hortense became an actress and singer in New York City on Boardway in the 1920s. She disappears from history by 1930. She was living in Manhattan, NY in 1930. Cecil remarried a Wilford Nichols Woods by 1910 or so, and moved to Lubbock from Dallas Texas before 1920 where her husband was a mechanic and she was operated a beauty shop. They had at least one child named Wilford Nichols Woods Jr, born in 1917 and who died in Howard County, TX by 1983. By 1930 they were living in Park County, CO and were stock raisers. They disappear from history thereafter. If any one has any information about this family please advise.

Re: Looking for Delia Boatner

Disregard this post that I put up in 2006. I found Delia Boatner. She was the daughter of James W. Boatner born in MS and Courtney Ann McKay born in LA. They lived in Morehouse Parish, LA for many years. After James who was a lawyer died before 1877, Delia and her mother and two brothers came to Texas. Harry C. Boatner lived in Dallas, and was a stonecutter, and died before 1890. He is likely buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Dallas as is Courtney Ann Boatner his mother who died after 1885 but before 1900. Their brother Robert moved to Goliad County, TX and is buried there. He died before 1900. Delia married and divorced Enoch Grigsby Mays Jr, and married John M. Moody in Midland Texas in 1886. She died in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1922 and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Ft. Worth in an unmarked grave.

This is my family line. Lem Leslie Boatner (son of Lemon Lem Boatner and Bertha Viola Peck) is my mother's father. Her name is Neda Oma Ruth Boatner. There is no information that I've found yet for Bertha Viola Peck's parents (Leslie's mother). That may very well be the case since she mentioned she was adopted (although we didn't take her seriously at the time). We are also supposedly of Indian descent.

Does anyone know of an Evalena Boatner? She is listed as my grandfather's mother on his death certificate. My grandfather was Bennie Calvin McAlexander (1906-1973). We have ran into a wall trying to determine Bennie Calvin's parents. Records are not matching. Evalena should have been married to Lorenzo Dow McAlexander - however, his name has also been listed as Randolph, R.L. and Bennie McAlexander. My great grandfather was a son of William Calvin McAlexander but we can find no record of his 3rd wife until now . . . Evalena. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The family was from Mississippi, the Marshall County Area. Thanks!!

Pat, Saw your post about Luveazy (louisa), and a husband, widower, William Willis Smithwick. I would like to know more. "A" William Willis Smithwick,(My GGgrandfather) son of Edmond Smithwick and Piety Willis, born in Georgia in 1824, married Mary James in Cobb Co Georgia. They had three children. He served in the Confederancy, signed up in Alabama. Later marrying (??) Mary Albright and moving to Texas where Mary Albright and all five of their children died. The year, I am not sure of, the only other info I have on him is that he is listed on the 1870 census for Madison Co, Alabama. If he married a third time I would be interested to have more info, and would like to know what happened to William Willis Jr. Also I would like to know more about the location of this information, and how I can get it.
I am from Norwood, LA . My Great grandfather was Henry Harrison Garig and his wife was your grandmother Mary Sofia Boatner Garig or did you say Sofia Mary? The Boatner book that they are talking about is your family history.

I remember reading some slave history in that book when I was 8 years old. I am 48 now so that is all I recall. One of our ancestors was slain by a slave with a knife with a pearl handle. The justice was rather swift. The land in Norwood where all this happened is said to be haunted by the slain and the slave. There are some pretty superstiticious local believers to this day. This boatner book would greatly help you.
Contact Norwood LA and get to know the Boatners they would be glad to help you. My brother Jimmy L. Garig is mayor and he would be glad to help you.
