This is a weak foundation but I have found that history shows that many men marry women with the same name as their mother or sister. I have also found in my family research the same situation. My gggggrandmother is in the census as Eliza and her tombstone also has Eliza for her name. However in the history of the local hospital her grandson Edward Shanklin Stuart states that his maternal grandmother Mary Shanklin was the midwife for Jefferson Davis. There was no census for a Mary Shanklin other that his uncle Fielding's wife. Fortunately the record clearly states that it was his MATERNAL Grandmother. Eliza was the grandmother of Edward Stuart and he was named after her husband Edward Shanklin. Therefore my gggggrandmother must have been Mary Elizabeth Huston. it appears her mother was named Mary but no records. Eliza's brotherRobert named his daughter Eliza Huston after his sister. Then she married Elizas son Robert(my ggggrandfather). I would go with both names being one person until I found a second wife for isaac named Mary.

Thank you --Wonder why her name is Hester in 1860 & Mary in 1880?? I have a picture of Mary, Georgiana & Benjamin. My mother is 84 & she remembers them. I believe it is the same family. It is very hard to get "paper" proof to prove you are of Indian descendant.

I'm sorry. I don't know anything of the Boatwrights you are looking for. But, I do think you are right about the mulatto being Indian. My father thinks that his grandfather was Lumbee, but I couldn't find the surname Boatwright among Lumbee surnames. Maybe Choctaw.... I'm not for sure though.

In 1860 isaac Boatwright was living in Jackson Florida. he was born 1824 in SC. He was living with Hester 1824SC, Susanne 1854SC, Chesley 1856SC and Benjamin 1859FL. I see that the 1880 census in 1880 that you reference in Escambia AL has Mary (Mary Hester Alton???) The dates of birth are off but the birthplace for Chess and Benjamin are right on. This would mean that the oldest daughter Susanna was born around 1854.

My GGgrandmother Mary Boatwright(born 1825) was from S.C.. On July 3, 1880 she lived at Canoe, Escambia Co. Al. She & her 4 children were listed as "mu". She was Indian. Her children names were Chess, Benjamin, Georgiana, Mervia. Her oldest daughter's name was Mary. Mary (born 1860 in S.C.) married 6-24-1880 to John Marion Woods. They are my Ggrandparents.
I can not find a census paper with Mary Boatwright (born around 1825) with her husband name on it. I was told it was Benjamin Isaac Boatwright. I was told Alton was her maiden name. I have found Hester as a last name but no Alton.???
I do not know any thing about the Powell but wanted to let you know that in my case "mu" was Indian.
If you know any thing of this family please let me know. Thank You

Checked my Boatwrights no connection. Ancestry.com shows 1870 census for Powell Boatwright (1837SC) mulatto in Columbia SC. Shows also Cornelia 1848SC, Edward 1861SC, and Annie 1811 VA. Annie may be Powells mother and Edward may be his son. Sorry I have no information to help you.

Gary

Boatwright/Boatright of South Carolina

Hello,

I am looking for information on Boatwright/Boatright in SC. The documents I have list my past relatives as living in various parts of Clarendon County, SC and being either colored or mulatto. Therefore, I don't know if I am looking for African-American, Caucasian, or Native American ancestors.

My grandfather was Edmond Boatwright (1924-2004) who married Mary Anna Green or Keys (DOB/DOD unknown).

Edmond's father was Selvyn (also listed as Sylvian & Slyven) Boatwright (1877-1946) who married Carlotta/Lottie Carter or McKnight (1887-1933). Selvyn later married Mary Lou James.

Selvyn's father was Richard Boatwright (1852-1919) who married Gertrude Anderson (1855-1919). On Richard’s death certificate, it states that his father was either Powell or Powill Boatwright of SC and mother unknown of SC.

I am trying to locate any information on Powell/Powill Boatwright and his spouse. Any information beyond him would be great as well. Also, any information on Edmond Boatwright’s spouse Mary Anna Green or Keys as well.

Thanks!
You probably already know this by now. Write me if you still need information on the Boatwrights.

Peggy Boatwright

Hello Boatright/Stanton Researcher,

I have not come across the person "Stanton Boatright" b. ca 1857. I know that the Boatright & Stantons were closely connected in the past---even back into the Alabama area. I am researching William Stanton---who I THINK is the son of Allen Stanton & Susan Lyles. But, I can't find any proof of this. Or the connection between Ruthie Ann Stanton & Allen Stanton & Susie Stanton which is listed on some of Ruthie's Choctaw papers. If I could prove that Ruthie Ann & William are brother & Sister--then I would know that Allen Stanton & Susie Lyles is both of their parents.

If you have any papers which show Ruthie Ann & William (b. ca.1847) are brother & sister please contact me. I live in McAlester Oklahoma---918-429-1366 or write me at martydar1776@yahoo.com Appreciate any help I can get. thanks again. martydar1776

In the Muskogee Public Library Genealogy Department, I have found microfilm of the court proceeding in the Choctaw Nation. Thomas J. Boatwright (T. J.) was listed several times, however one of the last I found was when Thomas petitioned the court to sell his mother's land to provide for her upkeep in an insane asylum. If you will send me an email, nancyq91@hotmail.com, I will be glad to share what proceedings I have found so far.

You would think, but no. I did not look at your tree much, but I see you descend from New England Tyler's and not the Virginia Tyler's. Some attempt to tap into that line via Virginia, but most Tyler's in NE descend from Job Tyler and not Laurence. But, maybe so. Most ancestral research uphold the latter. If not here maybe across the pond these roots trace.

In rootsweb's WorldConnect Project under ancestors of April Wharton Makerny, I found a pedigree showing that Ann Brashears (the fourth, b abt 1793, d abt1820) married John Lyles (b abt 1790, d abt 1812). They had a daughter Susan Lyles, b abt 1812. Then Ann Brashears married Alexander Brashears (the first, b abt1789, d 9 apr 1868). There is a book in the Pittsburg county genealogy library showing the names of those Choctaws who migrated to the Indain territory between 1832 & 1834. In this book I found Allen Stanton, plus a number of the Brashears family who are listed in this pedigree. I hope this helps.
My records show that Stanton (sometimes spelt Stauton) Boatwright was Ruth Stanton and Elias Boatwright's son. Stanton was born around 1857 in Arkansas. Sometimes information i get can be iffy. So, don't hold me to it. I have come to a stand still on Ruthie's mother, Susan Lyles. The last info I found was that she died along the banks of the Cimarron river somewhere. That was several years ago that I read that and I can't figure out what website it was on. She is suppose to be where the Choctaw comes into the Boatwright family when Elias married Ruthie (Susan Lyles daughter). My ggrandfather is Thoams J. Boatwright. So if anyone has any info for me PLEASE let me know.

Ruthie is my g-g-grandmother. My grandmother is Martha Louzena Boatright Wood, Elias' daughter. My mother, Willene Wood, says that John Tracy lived with them for a time when she was younger & remembers him well.
My question is about a census taken in Texas that shows a Stanton Boatright in the household. Does anyone know who that may be?

Ruthie Stanton died in 1900 in Okra, OK. I would think that she is buried near there. Okra is a little north and west of McAlester She had made application for Dawes enrollment, but died before the enrollment was completed. The Dawes commission info for Thomas J Boatwright show that John Tracy is a member of his household.
Ruthie was married to Elias Boatwright, John Tracy, and Edward Mosby (Mosly or Mosely). Mary Jane Boatwright was born in Texas, as was Elias. I believe that most if not all her siblings were born there also. Mary Ann

WILLIAM BOATRIGHT, b. 1814, Illinois; m. SARAH UNKNOWN, 1839.

Hello Treena,

I was unsuccessful in contacting you via your Boatwright family tree page, so I looked for you on Rootsweb. Just so you know, the contact option on your webpage does not seem to be working, nor does the sign-in for the guest book.

We may have communicated in the past, but if so, I can no longer recall. I am very interested in further discussing the son of Thomas Boatwright and Amy Rushing, listed on your family site:

xi. WILLIAM BOATRIGHT, b. 1814, Illinois; m. SARAH UNKNOWN, 1839.

William is my direct line. I have been unable to locate his marriage date/place, or the maiden name of his wife, who you show as Sarah, and I know as Mary.

She is listed as Mary in the MO census records. Perhaps her first name was Sarah and her middle name, Mary since their only 2 daughters were named Sarah (Jane) and Mary.
Note: her name was listed in one census record as Mary A., for whatever that is worth.

Would you be kind enough to let me know where you noticed her name listed as Sarah, and where you found the marriage date of 1839.

I cannot determine if they married in TX or AR, but their first two children were born in AR. It appears that William and his wife may have lived in Cain Hill, Washington Co, Arkansas during the 1840 census.

However, there is another [Boatwright, Edwin] head of household living in the same place at the same time in 1840, who I cannot locate in the Boatwright ancestry. If this is the same William, then Edwin is surely closely related?:
Edwin Boatright - 1840 Cain Hill, Washington, AR

Below are additional records for William Boatwright, b. 1814 IL.

1850 Madison Co MO Census
{Iron Co. did not form until 1857}
Boatwright -
William.....b IL
Mary........b MO
Sarah J.... b AR
John....... b AR

1860 Iron County MO:
Boatwright -
Wm 45 b IL
Mary A 35 b TN
Sarah J 15 b AR (marriage unknown)
John 13 b AR (commited suicide)
Mary 7 b MO -> Mary Boatwright Trapp Dosing
Julia 5 b MO -> Julia Ann Boatwright Clubb
Josephie 3 b MO -> unmarried - 2 children

1870 Township 34 Range 3 East, Iron, MO
William Boatwright abt 1814 Illinois
Mary Boatwright abt 1824 Missouri
Jane Boatwright abt 1845 Arkansas
John Boatwright abt 1849 Arkansas
Mary Boatwright abt 1853 Missouri
Julia Boatwright abt 1857 Missouri
Josephine Boatwright abt 1859 Missouri

1880 Murphysboro, Jackson, Illinois
Mary Boatwright 46 MO - - widowed
Josie Boatwright 21 MO - MO daughter
Robert Boatwright 3 grandson IL IL MO
William Boatwright 8mth grandson IL IL MO

1880 Pilot Knob, Iron, Missouri
J.
I've down loaded all William Boatwright/Boatrights - Union -MO papers.
Would like some help sorting out their ancestries.

At this site: I had better luck 'browsing', rather than 'searching'.

Go to Civil War option, then scroll down to Union Soldiers, then follow down the regiment numbers (note - numbers are spelled out)

Also available were CW pension INDEX (only)
and
select widow's applications - which were fantastic, if your soldier is listed.

Also noted in MO was:
Thomas C. Boatwright age 26 - 2nd Lite Artillery
Jacob Boatwright age 28 - 12th Calvary
John A. Boatwright age 18 - 11th Calvary
John Boatwright - 47th Infantry
John L. Boatwright (duplicate papers, age 21/age 31 - b. Henderson, TN) CW out of Springfield, MO

Wm. J. Boatrite age 20 - 51st Infantry & Krekels Batt
James P. Boatright - 51st Infantry

Thanks, Kay
Email: KayClerc@aol.com
or MehdiFakhar@aol.com
