Hello from Ireland.
Sharon, I am researching our Bobbetts, My grandparents were David and Margaret Bobbett of Fleenstown, Ashbourne, and have considerable research achieved. Yes I listened to Oral History but decided to actually research it with the tools that are available to me, unfortunally Auntie Judy passed away in May 2008.
I would be extremely interested in making contact with you with regards your section of the family.
Please contact me at my email address ourrootsundertherock@eircom.net.
Your distant cousin,
Mary O'Connor.

I have nothing new on John Hawke.
I suspect he may have been an illegitimate child or perhaps an orphan. I wonder the significance of the Hawke.

I have traced his wife Susannah back another 5 or 6 generations. So I have Geach's and some spouses back to the later half of the 1600's... about 1660s/1670s.

I would be more than happy to provide that info if you like.

I'm still booking for Bobbett's in New York. Samuel Bobbett married Ann S Higgs, and James Higgs married Bessie Bobbett. Samuel was a half brother to my grandfather Albert Bobbett. Samuel's father was Robert and his mother was Elizabeth. Robert remarried Mary Slocum ... and she is the mother of my grandfather. I hope this helps find a connection between our Bobbett branches. Jim

I too am stuck at John Hawke BOBBET's birth date. I am a descendent of Samuel Geach BOBBET and have considerable information from that line. John Hawke BOBBET's wife was Susan GEACH, born 1801in St. Austell, Cornwall. Her parents were Jonathan GEACH (b. about 1770 St. Austell) and Grace LOBB (b. about 1774 St. Austell). They married 1795 St. Austell. Siblings of Susan were Mary, Elizabeth, James and Grace.

David Hall
London, Ontario

I am researching my family tree and have come to a dead end at a John Hawke Bobbett born of Somerset England in 1793. He married Susan Unknown in 1821. One of his children was Samuel Geach Bobbett born 1831 and the other is Nurton William born 1829, both in Cornwall. Can anyone provide me any further information on John Hawke or his wife Susan (b: 1801 in Cornwall). I am hoping for parents and may be death dates/places.

Thank you!

Hi Jim

I've got some more information for you although I must confess that actual research was done by a friend of mine. She was visiting the county records office anyway so she looked in the Wookey church records and found the baptism of Robert Bobbett - Robert Bobbett baptised 17th August 1834 at Wookey parish church son of Joseph and Ann Bobbett (Joseph was a farm Labourer)

Joseph and Ann appear on the 1851 census for Wookey - Joseph is 55years old then and his birthplace is shown as Ashcott. I am certain now that he belongs to my Bobbett family at Ashcot and therefore we must have a common Bobbett ancestor. I think this would be Richard Bobbett born 1756 and that would be 2 more generations further back but I will have to do a bit more work to prove it.

I'll get back to you again when I've got the answer.

regards

Bill
I guess that this was your great grandfather. I would guess he might have left Somerset for a job in the coalmines - my paternal grandfarher did the same thing in the same area around the same time.

You might be interested to know that there is at least 1 other Bobbett descent living in New Zealand - my second cousin lives in Auckland and is also very active in family research.

regards

Bill

Bill, a thousand thanks for all you have done. My grandfather passed away before I had any interest in tracing the family tree. What little info I have was from my mother. The Albert refered to in the census would have been my grandfather. He would have been suprised to see himself listed as a 'scholar'. I suppose that means school age. Yes, please send me whatever information you have. I feel like I hit a gold mine. I just wish there was some infomation I could provide. Thanks again for everything. Jim

Hi Jim

I thought you might be interested to see the details from my copy of the 1891 census for England:-

Robert Bobbet (Head) 56 Genl Labourer born Wookey
Mary Bobbett (Wife) 51 Wookey
Richard Bobbett (Son) 4 Scholar Wookey
Oliver Bobbett (Son) 13 Labourer Wookey
Albert Bobbett (Son) 4 Scholar Wookey

I have copies of 1881 & 1851 censuses which also show your family and will send these later if you wish. I think that I can trace your ancestors back another 2/3 generations yet and by that time they merge with my Bobbett ancestors at Ashcott. But I have a bit more work to do on that.

hope this is of interest

Bill
Hi Jim

I guess your grandfather's parents were Robert Bobbett born 1835 and Mary born 1841 of Wookey, Somerset, England. I have seen their details in both the 1881 & 1891 censuses for Wookey. My mother was a Bobbett and her family came from Ashcott a village just 6/7 miles from Wookey and I beleive these families are connected although I am still working on the link. I am even more sure that your Bobbetts are closely connected to Cathy's.in Wookey.

I f you are interested I can trace your family back at least 1 more generation in Wookey. I can also let you have details of 1881 & 1891 censuses.

regards

Bill

regards

Bill

No. I'm in the United States (San Diego). I'll have to dig out my records. My grandfather, Albert Bobbett, came to the US in 1905. He was one of 14 children (I think the youngest). Some of the fourteen were half brothers/sisters. He stayed with two aunts in New York. He then moved to Colorado, settling in Colorado Springs around 1910? My mother was born their in 1911. He worked on a ranch owned by the son of President Chester Arthur... and later on the ranch owned by the Pulitzer family. He later moved to San Diego and opened a furniture store.

Well I have to run for now... more to come... Jim

Hi Cathy

I have been looking through some of my old notebooks this morning and have found something that may interest you.

A couple of years ago I was trying to establish a connection between the Ashcott & Wookey Bobbetts and found this entry in the Wookey parish records at the Somerset records office:-

Marriage 30th December 1819 -- Joseph Bobbett and Honour Bassett otherwise Sheppard. I guess that this could be the father of your Richard Bobbett born 1821 especially as his wifes name is Honour. I will be going to the records office again in a few weeks so will look at the record again to see if I can glean anymore information.

regards

Bill

Hello Cathy

Very interested in the detail you sent me. I have checked out Richard & Joseph Bobbett against my copies of the 1851 & 1881 censuses and they certainly appear to be father & son. I feel sure that I can make a connection with my Bobbetts at Ashcott. I don't know if you know Wookey but its only about 7/8 miles from Ashcott and I live at Glastonbury about half way between, its fairly easy for me to check parish records.

I also looked for the birth Albert Bobbett on the rootsweb 'Free BMD' but was puzzled when I only found 1 birth between 1903 & 1905 in the county of Monmouth and that was for Albert Edward Bobbett born Sept Quarter 1903 & registered in Cardiff. Could this be him?, maybe somebody changed the second name along the way. Maybe you will get the answer when you see your aunt's certificates.

Do you know that some of the Wookey Bobbetts emigrated to America? But then perhaps you live in New Yok state.

I'll do some more checking, but if you want anything specific checked out I've got access to a lot of data so i may be able to help. I'll be very interested to hear how you get on.

regards

Bill

Dear Bill

I am delighted to hear from you. I am in the early stages of tracing the family tree (and a complete beginner). My aunt is sending me some birth certificates but we really know very little about the family.

This is what I think: My great grandfather was not welsh but probably from somerset. His name was Joseph, he married Mary and they had 12 surviving children all born in Aberbeeg, Momouthshire.

One of those children was my grandfather Albert Henry Bobbett born in 1904 (we think) and died in 1977.

I can find a Joseph Bobbett in Wookey born in 1862.
His father appears to be Richard Bobbett, an agricultural labourer born in 1821 in Wookey.

I think this Jospeh is my Great grandfather because he had two sisters Honour and Hannah. My Aunt remembers a Great Aunt Hannah and one of Albert's sisters was named Honour.

At the moment I am having trouble even tracing one generation back!

I would be so grateful for your help and will send my details via email.

Regards
Cathy

Hello Cathy

Very interested in your message. This is not the same Albert Bobbett as mine but he is almost certainly related. My Albert Bobbett was born 1859 at Ashcott and died in 1908 in Street.
I have traced my Bobbett ancestors back to 1756 living at Ashcott. I already know that some of these Ashcott Bobbetts migrated to Wookey and heve found 1 or 2 connections. If you know the name of your grandfather I may be able to link him to my family.

I am also very interested in any connection with Bobbets in South Wales as I remeber my late mother saying that she had relatives there, but I have never been able to find the link.

If you contacted me direct I could send you details of my research.

Bill Norman

Dear Murray:
I am one of the many descendants of the Irish Bobbett. In 1998 I had the opportunity to know Ireland and my ascendancies. As for the Bobbett that you mention, I know correctly which is the branch that was for New Zealand. The birthplace of the Irish Bobbett is Ashbourne, Co. of Meath, to forty kilometers of Dublin. In that opportunity, Julia Bobbett the oldest of all in Ireland, it provided me the genealogical tree of our family.
My great-grandfather called William, the same as yours, alone that mine came to the Argentina with his cousin Thomas O´Connor around 1873, where he settled down and it formed his family. In Argentina, we are very few those that take the last name, my father, my father's cousin, my cousin and my two brothers (Thomas and Charles).
In the next e-mail, I promise to send you scaned the genealogical tree indicating you which you are those that left for New Zealand. Also, I will send you addresses so that you contact yourself with the Irish Bobbett and the pictures of my family.
A strong hug.

Mario BOBBETT

Sue:
It is doubtful this is the same person. I spoke to Albert in Sarasota back in the 1980's and he was not born there, his family actually had come from New York state as had mine, but it was not the same branch. He did tell me he knew his ancestors had come from Whookynook England but that's all he knew. If he is still in Florida he should be listed in the phone book. His brother had a lot of information on their family but I do not remember his name. Good luck on your search.

I'm looking for info. on Albert E. Bobbett and his wife, Margaret (?Horsey) Bobbett. He is listed in the 1920 census as being age 26 and born in Florida...with his parents being from England. Margaret was born in Maryland c1899 (21 y. o. in the 1920 census), and her parents were from Md. Could this Albert Bobbett be the one you had listed from Sarasota, Florida?

Dear Jim:
I have been researching the Bobbett's for several years. My grandfather was Charles Albert Bobbett and we lived in NY state and much of the family still does. However it is not the one you are looking for. In my research I ran across a Bobbett in Sarasota Florida several years ago and he is a direct desendant of the family you are reasearching. He had a brother in NC that was a dentist that had a lot of your family information. I have not yet been able to establish a link between your family and mine but if I go back far enough I probablly will. My family did live on the same road as yours when my grandfather was younger and they knew each other very well. Good luck!
