Bodenham's of Minsterworth, Glos

We have researched our direct family back to 1500 in great detail and all of this info is avble on our website. However, our interest in other branches of Bodenham continues, and I am at present trying to fine out more about the infamous convict Thomas Bodenham who arrived on the convict ship Coromandel in 1820 (4/4/1820), having been given 7 years at Shrewsbury assises for a crime of some sort. He is of course one of the most famous of all convicts, and featured in the recent film Van Diemens Land.
He is listed as.....286B Bodenham Thomas Coromandel Shrewsbury 1-Aug-1819 7 years Edinburgh ...on the site...(http://iccs.arts.utas.edu.au/convicts.html). Anyone know anything more about his earlier time in UK?

Hi There

I have qite a substantial amount of information regarding this family, I too descend from Bodenham/Drinkwater, but my great grand father (Henry Bodenham 1874) was brother to Francis' dad (William Bodenham 1869/1947 who married Lucy Jaynes). I believe Francis was the youngest of their 8 children (it appears some died at a young age).
I could go on for ages here.
I would be interested in exchanging/verifing info with you.
Call me on 01454 631233 or 07966603205.
Mark Bodenham
Looking for any information on one Jonas Bodenham that was named in the will of Sir Francis Drake. Aside from perhaps selling the property inherited to Thomas Drake Brother of Francis, I do not seem to find any information on him after the death of Francis Drake. He is assumed to be the Nephew of Sir Francis by way of his sister in law Margaret Newman, however I have no indication of this being accurate. Thank you. Marie

Hi
Nice to hear from a Bodenham who is having success. I have also have had help from John, I assume we are talking about the John Bodenham in Wembury Plymouth, He has helped me get back to 1754, to a Robert Bodenham who married Mary Drinkwater. I would be happy to discuss my tree with you for any information that you have. I have a tree here at www.ancestry.co.uk and my full tree including christening and other info on my Legacy files, which as I did with John, convert the details that you would like onto a pdf file and email it to you, obviously at no cost.
What line do you come from?

MArk Bodenham

Hi Mark;

I'm researching the Bodenham name as well. My interest is in the family of George Henry Bodenham and Sarah Ann Hartley. They had at least 2 children:
George Henry Bodenham b. 18 Mar 1877 Kingswinford in the County of Stafford, Stourbridge, Eng.
Joseph Bodenham b. abt 1877

Both of these children served in World War I. Joseph was with the Worcestershire Regiment and died on 6th Aug. 1915 at age 28. At the time of his death his family was living at Kingswinford, Dudley.
George Henry married Mary Ann Hammond, had a family, and eventually moved, as did most of their offspring, to Canada.

I'd like to hear back from you if you have any connection to or information about this family.

Many thanks,
Jenny (in Canada)
Hi Mark,

I'm not sure if I talked with you earlier on or not. However, if I did I guess it won't hurt to have another little chat.

I'm not very familiar with the geography of England so...can you tell me if the areas you are looking into are anywhere near Kingswinford, Dudley, Stourbridge?

Perhaps we could exchange a bit of information and see if we can find any connections?

Jenny Bodenham (in Canada)

Hi Frank,

Wow...what a huge project you have undertaken. I'm sure it will benefit many, many people looking for family information.

My Bodenham family originated (as far back as I have been able to find) in the Kingswinford, Dudley area. I have found a great uncle for my husband on the Commonwealth War Graves Commision site. He died on Friday, 6th August 1915 at the age of 28. He was the son of George Henry BODENHAM of 4, Market St., Kingswinford, Dudley. Another son, George Henry was born in Stourbridge in 1877. These boys were the sons of George Henry BODENHAM and Sarah Ann HARTLEY.

I'm not familiar with the geography of England but hope that perhaps these places were close enough together that perhaps something might be mentioned about the family around the time that Joseph was killed.

Thanks in advance for any information or help that you might have for me.

Jenny Bodenham (in Canada)

Dear Rev. Hill,

Thank you the lovely pictures. Since I've never been to England it helps me to get a feel for what some of it looks like.

I haven't been able to find out where Bodenham got its name. Apparently, there were a number of fairly well off Bodenhams in the area. They owned land around Bodenham I believe.

The mansion at Rotherwas belonged to them at one time. There is a small chapel at Rotherwas where some of the family's graves remain, I've been told.

I have a bit more information along those lines but nothing that explains how Bodenham came to be called Bodenham.

If you come across any information about the Bodenham name (any any context) I would be pleased if you would pass it along to me. I'm researching my husband's family and I'm interested in all things Bodenham.

Thanks very much.

Kind regards,
Jenny Bodenham

I am using my computer to help my friend research her Bodenhams. She is seeking information on Cyril Bodenham born Aug 1,1911 in Merthyr Tydfil, S. Wales. His father was Frank Bodenham, and his mother was Gladys Sarah Elizabeth Morse. The parents were divorced shortly after Cyril's birth, and he was raised by his father. According to family history, the father Cyril left Wales and went overseas when the baby was young.

I understand the Bodenhams ancient seat was Bryngwyn Manor in the parish of Much Dewchurch but at some time it became secondary to their Rotherwas estate. They were Roman Catholics and paid their fines for being so. My ancestors leased their farms in MuchDewchurch and there are srong indications that some were employed on the Rotherwas estate.

The Bodenham family papers have been deposited in Hereford Record Office and I understand they comprise of nine boxes.
