I followed your 2007 thread on this death of HVDB great interest.
I have also long believed HVDB was likely framed.
I had Nicolaes Coorn picked out as the likely person. He was promoted to Schout when van Twiller returned to Amsterdam. Previously demoted for theft.
I am most interested in your theory that Stuyvesant and HVDB clashed over the clearing of the houses around Ft Orange. Was it really Stuyvesant that HVDB tried to throw overboard? I though it Kieft, his drinking buddy. That would tend to modify my thinking.
For my family, I am rewriting a pamphlet on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the birth of HVDB. Also correcting misconceptions of our descent as printed in Encyclopedia of Biography, MASS (1916).
Ted Holtzman
Miami FL

My curiosity centers around my gg grandmother Jane Rebecca Underwood. She was b March 1818 to Joseph and Jane Wright Underwood. Joseph is gone before the Richland co OH 1820 census where his wife Jane can be found with three children (Jane the youngest child) enumerated next to her widowed step mother Elizabeth "Write".
August 1922 she Jane Wright Underwood marries Wm Bogart in Richland Co. OH.
According to Richland Co OH court records Wm stole a horse from Elizabeth Wright on Aug 1 1924. Oct 1926 Court Term Jane Bogart was a witness to that and Wm had flown the coop by then. That is the last record I can find of Jane W U Bogart. I noticed Wm in Cass county for 1830 with a little kids and it made me wonder if it was the same William of course.
I don't think I can offer anything else at this point, but I have another query out there and if get any clarification on this family will be happy to share it with you.

As far as having them figured out the answer is no, I don't have any documentation proving lineage past Russell. There is some evidence and other reseachers out there who believe they are connected. Cathy Strunk wrote to me in 2005 that William,Russell, and John Bogart along with other Bogart's found in 1820 census, Ohio. Russell, William and John came to Ontwa township, Cass county Michigan abt 1827. All are found 1830 Cass county Michigan census. In 1830 Cass county census William has a woman 80-90 years old living with him, no wife. John has family. Russell has family. They may have originally come from Genese New York. They moved to Ohio early 1800's resided there abt 11 years before moving to Michigan. Possably connectecd to Nicholas Bogart who received land grant in Ohio and James Bogart the assignee of Nicholas Bogart's land in Ohio. Russell Bogart moved from Ohio to Cass county Michigan, to Berrien county Michigan,to Missouri, to Fannin county Texas . There is another researcher who from memory actually got into the DAR with Russell via father Jacobus "James" Bogart and wife Elizabeth Benezet. Other researchers say not possible they had a son Russell G who died as a child.
I have wondered if this Wm Bogart is the one who can be found in Putnam co OH in the 1840 and 1850 census and died 1 Feb 1858, buried in Bogart Cem? If so, he remarried Maria Smith.
here is something else I saved ages ago- this is your Russell?:
From The Annals of Richland Co OH compliled by Mary Jane Henney- page 70. census of Jan 5, 1827 in Mansfield on Mulberry St is Russel Bogart with 6 people in the household. there are no Underwoods on this census.

Do you think this William is a brother of Russell Bogart?
It is stated in the 1850 census that Wm was b in NJ. That is not too far from the NY report that you mentioned.

The reason this is of interest to me is that after this marriage, Jane Wright Underwood Bogart falls off the face of the earth. The very last I know of her is from this 1826 Richland co court record: I don't know if she ran off, remarried or what:
Judgment Papers- October Term 1826
State of Ohio vs William Bogart- Horse Stealing- Witnesses Elizabeth Wright, Jane Bogart, Stephen Smith, Robert Johnson, James Mumford.- Thomas Smith, foreman State of Ohio Richland County SS- Richland Common Pleas of the term of Oct. in 1824 the Grand Jurors of the State of Ohio in and for the body of the Co. of Richland.... on their oaths & solemn affirmations present & find that one William Bogart late of said Co. heretofore to wit on the 1st day of Augu in 1824 with force & arms at Mansfield one mare of the value of $50.00 of the goods & chattels of one Elizabeth Wright then & there found, then & there feloniously did steal take away, lead away, contrary to the form etc... agains state of Ohio . (signed A. Coffinberry, Pros. Atty.)

(note: Eliz Wright is Jane's m-in-l, Robt Johnson is her b-in-law.)
Have you sorted out the Bogarts? who do you think is the father of Russell and William? ps, you may have meant Van Wert OH. I am hopeful you have sorted these folks out better than I have been able to so far...

One of Russell daughters stayed in Michigan, Lucinda married Joseph Brewer. She was born in 1818 in Van Dert Ohio, died in Saint Joseph, Berrien Michigan per relatives. They knew who her father was and that all of them moved to Texas via Missouri. Last daugther was born in Missouri. We knew that all of Russell children were born in either Michigan or Ohio, they switch from census to census between the two except Caroline. Russell wife Elizabeth always say's she was born in Ohio. Russell passed away about 1844. His wife re-married twice after that I am connected through his son James Monroe Bogart and his daughter James Anna Bogart. Chidlren say that Russell was born in New York on census and mother Ohio. Russell has landgrants in Richland, Ohio and Cass County, Michigan, Missouri and Texas.

The 1871 Census for Watt(which appears on two separate pages) shows an Elizabeth age 8 and an Anne age 3. The 1881 Census lists them as Elizabeth age 17 and Eliza Anne age 12 so yes, they are two different people. I have found nothing to say that Elizabeth's middle name was Marie or Maria or even Nancy - still looking for that data. The family bible that is transcribed on this thread lists Elizabeth as only two years older than Eliza and is the only place I have seen the middle name of Maria used - but it is a typed transcript so I really don't know that it is accurate.
Hope this helps!

I am puzzled about Elizabeth married to Frederick Charles Ouderkirk. Was she married twice? I have a marriage for Eliza Ann listed below.
Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1801-1928
about James Young
Name: James Young
Birth Place: Scotland
Age: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Father Name: John Young
Mother Name: Elizabeth Young
Spouse Name: Eliza Ann Bogard
Spouse's Age: 18
Spouse Birth Place: Canada
Spouse Father Name: Jacob Henry Bogard
Spouse Mother Name: Nancy Bogard
Marriage Date: 1 Sep 1886
Marriage Location: Muskoka District
Marriage County or District: Muskoka

I am puzzled . Jacob Henry and Nancy seemed to have had two daughters named Elizabeth
Maybe one was Elizabeth Marie and the other Eliza Ann.

Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1801-1928
about Elizabeth Bogart
Name: Elizabeth Bogart
Birth Place: Canada
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864
Father Name: Jacob Henry Bogart
Mother Name: Nancy Bogart
Spouse Name: Frederick Ouderkirk
Spouse's Age: 24
Spouse Birth Place: Canada
Spouse Father Name: Henry Ouderkirk
Spouse Mother Name: Eliza Ouderkirk
Marriage Date: 13 Oct 1884
Marriage Location: Muskoka District
Marriage County or District: Muskoka

You are correct! That should read simply Elizabeth Bogart for now. I had used Elizabeth Nancy as that was as she was listed in "The Ouderkerk Family Genealogy Vol II" but I have found no primary source documentation for either Nancy or Maria as a middle name yet and I have her marriage registration, census records from 1871 to 1930, obituary and headstone pic. The family bible as transcribed in this thread indicates her middle name is Maria but I have found some discrepancies in other parts of this transcription and so am not prepared to accept it at face value yet! If someone knows where to find proof other than the bible that her middle name is Maria that would be great! I have yet to locate her Social Security Death Index listing - might be there?
Thanks so much for sending me the marriage registration for Rebecca as that does fill in a piece of the puzzle for me.
Sorry to hear about your FTM problems! I hope that doesn't happen to me! :(

Can you tell me where you found the information regarding Elizabeth Ouderkirk and Peter Bogart? I am an Ouderkirk descendant (Jacob and Nancy Bogart's daughter, Elizabeth Nancy, married Frederick Charles Ouderkirk, my great great uncle) and I did not know of an earlier Ouderkirk connection. I cannot find any documentation at all linking these two people together or to Jacob Bogart. I'd love to know your sources! Thanks.
Leanne in Bracebridge

She is buried in a country cemetery south of Lone Tree, Ia.
Paula was my aunt and she and my mother were close. When my mother died we lost contact with all the family on my mothers side.
Any information you have about Paula would be greatly appreciated.
I have a picture of a young Paula holding me as a baby, I was less than a year old at the time.
Her husband was Dr. Francis William (Frank) Bogart. He mostly used his middle name in later years...

Frank was born 28 October 1850 in Batavia, Genesee County, New York and his family moved to Chicago. His parents were Egbert H. Bogart and Elizabeth A. Duryee. He had previously been married to Ellen J. Smythe, by whom he had as many as six children, only two of whom are known to me by name. They seem all to have died in childhood. After her death, he married Mary Moorehouse (28 August 1852, New Jersey-8 November 1916, Brownwood, Texas). Meekie was his third wife, and based on the age at first marriage given for her on the 1930 census, it appears they married in 1921/22. Dr. Bogart died 7 September 1925 in Fort Worth.

Hope this helps...

I, too, am researching this branch of the Bogarts. My thread begins with George...his 2 daughters, Amanda (died 1860) and subsequently Anna, both married Perry Philander Chaffee. The Chaffees (Anna and Philander) moved to Crystal,Montcalm. MI around the same time as George and Darius Bogart. Anyway, would love to share information and collaborate to perhaps make some headway with our blanks.

Kay

I have quite a bit of information r/t George Bogart's family. Darius was born 16 May 1834 in OH, he married Margaret Ann Starkee (Starkey) 18 Oct 1855 and they lived in Bloomer Twp, Montcalm Co, MI. He died 25 May 1914. They had Vantalan in 1857, George Darius in 1859, Alveretta in 1861, William A. in 1863, and Agnes A. in 1965. You could find more info on my Gambee Family Tree on Ancestry.
Richard,
Thanks for the help. I was born a Gambee, but all my legal paperwork was Smith. Long story. My Uncle Bud is the only living Gambee direct descendent now. I would like to be able to give this to him before too long. The Gambee I have back to 1400 in Germany but nothing on Bogart/Case side so I've been hard at work. You can e-mail at dianalynn1208@yahoo.com. I have a lot of pictures on the Gambee side but very few on the Bogart/Case side.
Thanks again,
Diana

First off, yes I will find him. Usually take me about a week to find the info and the validate it.

By the way, what are you going to change your last name to?
I was adopted as a Schramm but I am a Bogart and I am also in the process of changing my name.

Regards,

Richard (Bogart) Schramm

P.S. If you want to give me a private email address I'll then be able to send you any documentation or pictures. I am a very private person and I treat all people the same way. Have a good day.

Hi Richard, I am trying to locate family of George Bogart b. 18 Apr 1807 (in OH I think), m. Elizabeth Walton in 1832, d. 1 Jan 1892 in Crystal, Montcalm County, MI. I believe he came to MI, from Wyandot Co, OH, in 1822. I have really hit a brick wall here and can't seem to find any information on him at all. Hoping for good news. Thanks for your time. Diana (I am trying to get a name change reversed but not having any luck, I was born a Gambee, Bogart, Case......

Trying to trace the Bogart side of my family. I have a gg grandfather, Jacob Bogart. He was born in Ohio (although his mother was from Pennsylvania), on February 8, 1842. He served as a sergeant in the 70th Ohio Infantry, Company D. Eventually, he and his wife, Nancy (don't know her maiden name), moved to Newport, Kentucky. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery (d. December 9, 1923). His father was a John Bogart and his mother was (Hannah) Kuhn. He and his wife, Nancy, had six children: Carrie (?); Sallie (my g grandmother); Geoge; Lindell; Harry; and Mamie (?). Lindell (Lynn) lived in Harrison, Ohio, I believe.
