I was stationed in Scotland for 11 years, I did a lot of research, I have several Scotish names of my moms side, what I did find out about BOLT, is that it is a very common English and Irish name, came from Europe prior to Britian. Same first name used to often and no middle name. Like John, Robert and williaqm, very hard to check, having the same issue with my Scotish wife's maiden name-Burke !!!

I hope we can find something, would be neat.
Rick

The family lore is that my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, John Bolt, was kicked out of Ireland for stealing a hog! He made his way to the US and the rest is history. What I was thinking is that we might be related through a common relative in Ireland who lived BEFORE our ancestors made their way to America. How many Bolts could there have been in Ireland?

My uncle always claimed that our branch of the Bolt family came from Dublin, Ireland. I have never seen any evidence for this, so I read with great interest that your Bolt ancestor was born in Ireland. I have met people named Bolt who claimed that their families came from England, Germany, Norway, Denmark or the Netherlands, but you are the first outside of my own family who claims Ireland. Do you have any of your family tree pre-America? A cousin of mine claims to have traced ours back to the 1600's in Ireland. I'm wondering if we might be 31st cousins or something ;-)

Lewis Bolt b 1823, New York

Lewis married Mary (?), b 1829 in Ireland. They had a number of children:

Michael b 1852, NY
Charles b 1858, NY
Mary b 1862, NY
George b 1863, PA
Elizabeth b 1866, PA
Martha b 1868, PA
Gertrude b 1870, PA

In the 1880 census the family was living in Batavia, NY. I believe Mary is my g-g-grandmother, though there is a hitch in my connection. My g-grandmother was Martha 'Mattie' Bolt, who in her teens was living with her aunt Martha (b 1868). G-grandmother's mother was supposedly Mary. There was an "A. Howard" given as the father, but a lot of secrecy surrounded this and we now believe she was born out of wedlock. The connection to Lewis is strong enough that we are assuming it is correct.

I hope someone out there can tell me about Lewis and his wife Mary.

Hi... my name is Evelyn (Bolt) Etheridge. My father was John Henry Bolt (1889-1967). I was looking at your file on my father and there's a couple of things wrong. He had two daughters (Edith and myself) and did not have a son named John. He had two sons, Clarence and Jim. Next... I see you're looking for pictures of Bolts in uniform. I have one picture each of my half-brothers (Clarence and Jim) who both retired from the Air Force. I also have pictures of myself (I retired from the Air Force in 1992). Please let me know if you're interested in these. Also, how are you related to my father?

Thanks for replying! :-)

Yup, your Michael Bolt is different from mine. I encountered your ancestor when researching the Bolt name and had to untangle the two likely lines! I remember your Michael as the cabinet maker was not my line however there was another Michael Bolt in the area that was a Coachman and he is my Michael Bolt.

So my search goes on! I see a lot of Bolts in Dorset area but have not been able to trace mine there yet. I have traced the Death of my Michael Bolt to a poorhouse and his son, Thomas, was brought up by his stepfather who was a tinsmith and Thomas took his trade before joining the 4th Hussars. Thomas ended up here in Perth at the Barracks and so our line of Bolts is established here but Thomas seems a bit of a ropey character. Mind you, given the early death of his father etc it should hardly be surprising.

Hello,

I have just seen your message re the above.

I have information re Michael Bolt - he was my g.g.g.g.grandfather. I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same person because I have his death certificate showing that he died in Shoreditch aged 80 in 1867. The informant was T (Thomas?) Bolt and his address was Phipp St, Shoreditch.

According to the 1851 & 1861 censuses, Michael was born in Wareham Dorset and it was here that he married Elizabeth Laws (not Lewis?) in 1809.

However, I think you may not have the right man because whilst Michael did have a son called Thomas, he (Thomas) was born in 1817 in Portsea (Portsmouth). Thomas married Sarah Neale in 1838 at St John the Baptist, Hoxton, and on the 1871 census Thomas & Sarah were living in Bethnal Green and Thomas was a cabinet maker as was his father Michael.

I can send you copies of certificates/censuses about the family if you still feel there may be a connection - just let me know your email address.

Regards,

Cherie

My Bolt lines goes Robert Sr., Sarah, Benjamin, Aaron, James, Martha. I would love to have a copy of this picture. You stated you bought this photo at a flea market. Which flea market did you buy it from? Are you a descendant of the Bolt's? If so, which one? Thanks for being kind and generous with your offer to share this photo. Anita H.

My GGGG grandather was Jeptha Bolt, born in New York state in 1809. He lived in Colon, MI at the same time as Cornelius. I have not been able to prove a direct connection, but it seems likely that they were related. Jeptha moved to Wisconsin and Minnesota for a period of time, and I believe that Cornelius also went to that area at some point. Jeptha's wife was Jane Hotchkiss and his daugter was Anna Arpatia Bolt. Have you ever heard the names Jeptha or Anna Arpatia in your research?

Best regards,

Chris Holben

Michael Bolt - born about 1787 - Shoreditch, London

Wondering if anyone has any information regarding this character? I can find no marriage for him in London and the only one that turns up in the old records is to an Elizabeth Lewis in Wareham, Dorset but not sure if this is my Michael Bolt or not- he definitely died in Shoreditch in 1867 aged 80.

I have his son (or i should say, the one we are related through) as Thomas William Bolt, born 1840, which would mean Michael was quite, ah, athletic in his older days- not to mention Elizabeth so I can't help feel I am missing a step.

Thomas William Bolt was born in St. Dunstan Manus, Middlesex and moved to Perth, Scotland where he was listed as a Railway Engine Cleaner in 1871 when his wife, Betsy Ferguson, gave birth to their son John Ferguson Bolt. John Ferguson Bolt then married Mary Peters Ferguson in Perth and had a son, Allan Ferguson Bolt in 1909. He was n the Royal Engineers (i think) and married a Selina Gardiner Javens from Glasgow. They had two children, Sylvia Gardiner Bolt and Alan John Javens Bolt.

I can only be certain of things as far back as Thomas William Bolt- any help or info would be appreciated! My wife is the daughter of Sylvia.

I was looking for another naval member of the family on the national archives website and I wondered if you were aware of some wills written by William Bolt, RN seaman dated 1795 aboard Fortunee and 1801 on Unicorn, you can access these on the National Archives website, follow the lin "Wills of Royal naval seaman (ADM 48)" http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/willsdeat... Best, Alex

I am curious about you g-g-g-grandfather who was at Trafalgar.
My g-g-g-grandfather William Bolt's family had seafarers, including a captain/master-mariner as well as a Bounty mutineer relative (Matthew Quintal). Perhaps your William and mine were the same person??
I have just a bit of info about my William; possibly married about 1799 at St Austell to a Hannah/Ann Ham. Do you have any particulars concerning your William, e.g., next of kin, etc.?
Kindly reply either here on Message Board or via my off-Ancestry address: rabolt@verizon.net.
