Hello,

I am a Bonnin, now a Lightfoot. I am interested in finding out about my roots as well. My brother is visiting I'll de Rey in May as far as we can find out that is where the Bonnin's are from about 400 years ago.

Good luck!

I think I may be related to you. My uncle was Lee Anthony Bonin. My mother was his youngest sister. Lee was probably born in St. Martinville but my grandparents resettled in Port Arthur, Texas were he was raised. They had 4 girls and 5 boys. Lee, Arthur, Ned, Fred and Felix were the boys and Anna, Mabel, Rhona and Ethel were the girls. Only Rhona and my mother, Ethel are still alive. Lee had 3 sons and one daughter. Their names were Edward Lee, Mark Allen, and Ronnie. The girl was named Jeannie. If you think this is the same Lee, feel free to contact me : pamvizuete@yahoo.com

The Bonins actually came from Grenoble France which at the time was a Jewish community and because the were being pursequted by the Catholic there were forced to leave the country they went to Canada Quebec and became Catholic and during the french revoluation moved to Mobile Alabama because it was in the Lousiana purchase they later went to an area the called New Iberia which means new beginning in Hebrew. There they settled in St Martinesville and became a strong Catholic also Laffeted and New Iberia. This is what I have. Wish I had more. Donna

I take that back. I did find a Lee with no middle name or birth date in the book. I was looking in the wrong index. LOL! Just finished a run in the Texas heat so the brain is not fully functioning yet. If this is the right Lee, it looks like James Bonin born in 1877 and Laura Mary Head are his parents. Good Luck with your search!

I am the one that originally posted the thread. I had put the line aside for awhile as I was spinning my wheels and have been working on my mom's side of the family. I was just thinking the other day that I should pick up my dad's side and start working on it again. I would appreciate corresponding with you about this line. I remember hearing names from my dad but at that time was not doing genealogy. Stupid me because now I am having a time of making some sense.

I am sorry I haven't responded sooner, but work and travel have kept me busy lately. Since you are interested in general information on the Bonin's in LA, here is a tidbit to help you know alittle about the LA Bonins. The LA line is traced back to a gentleman by the name of Antoine Bonin. According to Gestnair Bonin's research Antoine was born in Grenoble, St Laurent, Dauphine, France. He was in the french army and that is how he came to the US via Mobile, Al. He married a woman by the name of Marguerite Tellier and they settled in the area of St. Martinville LA. It always amazes me how we all trace back to one set of parents. :) If you have specifics you are searching for, please feel free to forward them and I will help with what I can.

Re: Sierre Pierre Bonnain, NS

Hi Mike, I believe you know my father, Richard Boning. We planning a trip to NS in August and are interested in visiting St. Esprit to look at where Pierre Bonnain settled. In looking at Google-earth views of the area, it is unclear where Pierre's residence would have been. Presumably, there would have been both a harbor and a ready source of freshwater. However, the inland body of water closest to the point designated as St. Esprit appears to be cut off from the ocean. Perhaps this was not always the case. The nearest current harbor appears to be about 2 km west at L'Archeveque. Any guidance you could offer would be very much appreciated.
