Hello,

I am a descendant of Thomas Bosley, and I was hoping you might have found more information. My trail went dead with him, and try as I might I can't determine his parents' names or the name(s) of his siblings. I suspect there is a Maryland Bosley connection, but just don't have anything to hang my hat on. Any help you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gavin Helme

Thomas Potts Bosley

Please refer back to my posting from 2010. Thomas Potts Bosley was born to Elijah and Katherine Potts Bosley in Kentucky in 1836. Elijah had previously been married to Mary Potts and they had three daughters. Shortly after Mary died, Elijah married Katherine Potts. However, Katherine died within a few days after the birth of Thomas. Elijah then marries Harriet Clayton and they have four children. Thomas moves to Indiana by 1841 with the entire family. Later, as an adult, Thomas moved to Missouri w/his wife and children. When his first wife died, he remarried and had many more children with his second wife.

Re: Origins of the Bosley surname in England? Herefordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, ?Cheshire?

As mentioned in my previous post, I have a source that shows the counties & more specifically the Poor Law Unions (PLUs) with the highest frequencies of Bosleys as of the 1881 census. These locations are clues to the origins of the earliest Bosleys, since places with the highest frequencies of this surname in 1881 MAY reflect high frequencies hundreds of years earlier.

Here's the map showing PLUs with the highest frequencies of Bosleys:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...

It looks to me like the 3 hot spots for Bosleys (Berkshire, Herefordshire, & Somerset) may all be independent of each other, and also independent of Bosleys in Cheshire. DNA testing can prove whether or not this is true.
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Bosley

I've also posted maps for some similar-sounding surnames. It appears from the maps that there are probably some cases where these names may be variants of Bosley (or of each other), but in many cases it appears they may have different origins.

Data is here, by Poor Law Union
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
and by county
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...

Maps are here:
Bosley
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
Basley
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
Bazley
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
Boseley
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
Bosely
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
Bossley
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net

Re: DNA testing for Bosley families

There is further information at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Thrift-Frith-Firth/ but the basics are:

* You order a Y-chromosome DNA test kit for 37, 67, or 111 markers (67 markers is a recommended compromise between resolution & expense) from the testing company, Family Tree DNA. (These tests are for intergenic "STR" regions of the male Y chromosome, and are specifically NOT intended to report on genes, health, or any observable traits. These tests are for males only.)

* FTDNA mails you a test kit, then you (the testee) gently swab your inside cheek with something like a mini-toothbrush, which gathers some cheek cells. You seal this in a vial provided with preservative, and mail it back to FTDNA.

* You provide me, the project administrator, with your family tree information, focusing on your all-male-line ancestors. This information is vital in correlating the DNA results of all project members with the known family history of the surname.

* In about 2 months your Y-chromosome DNA results are available as a series of numbers. The numbers represent how many STR repeats you or your testee has, for each marker tested.

* Your results are compared to others who have tested. You may not be an exact match to anyone in the database (because of random mutations), but if others with your surname have tested 37 markers or more, it will generally be clear whether you are closely related to them or not. If several people from different branches of a family have tested 67 or 111 markers (and if you do, too), you can often see which branch of the family you are closest to. As project administrator, I help interpret results if they are not clear.

There is already at least one descendant of Walter Bosley of Baltimore, MD in the project for comparison (his results will be available in March).

In England, in addition to the (claimed, disputed) origin of Bosleys in Cheshire, there are three regions with particularly high frequencies of Bosleys, which COULD each represent a point of origin for a different Bosley lineage. These are Herefordshire, Somerset, & Berkshire (see http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.bosley/279/mb.ashx for specific PLUs with the highest frequencies of Bosleys). WE NEED Bosleys who trace to each of these four regions to participate in the project, in order to see whether there is just one or several origins for the Bosley surname in Britain.

We also want to compare people with the possibly related surnames: Basleigh, Basley, Basli, Bazley, Beausoleil, Boasley, Boseley, Bosely, Bosle, Boslee, Bosler, Boslet, Boslett, Bosslet, Bossley, Bozely, Bozley

As an example of the kind of Y-DNA results that can be obtained (for the Thrift surname), you can scroll down to the table here
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp
and see that 10 testees with the surname Thrift can clearly be placed into one of 4 different families. (Other Friths and Firths fall into their own family groups.) This table is presented in such a way that you don't even have to look at the numbers for each STR result, you can just look at the different patterns of color that become apparent, given enough testees, for each extended family. Eventually we will have enough participants in the Bosley Surname DNA Project to present a similar analysis for Bosleys (and related surnames).

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net
Origins of the Bosley surname in England? Herefordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, ?Cheshire?

I just received the British Surname Atlas from Archer Software. It shows the counties & more specifically the Poor Law Unions (PLUs) with the highest frequencies of Bosleys as of the 1881 census. These locations are clues to the origins of the earliest Bosleys, since places with the highest frequencies of this surname in 1881 MAY reflect high frequencies hundreds of years earlier.

BY FAR the highest frequencies of Bosleys in 1881 were in
Ledbury, Herefordshire, and
Williton, Somerset, followed by
Newbury & Bradfield, in Berkshire.

These three locations form a triangle, with about 100 miles separating each point. Bosleys in these regions spilled out into Newent & Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, Taunton in Somerset, and several PLUs in or near Berkshire (Wallingford, Kingsclere, Wantage, Abingdon, Cookham, Thame, Henley, Easthampstead).
(I plan to put maps & tables online in the next few weeks)

The Poor Law Union of Chester is only #23 in this ranking. One might expect a higher ranking if the Manor of Bosley in Cheshire were actually the source of most British Bosleys.

I wonder if anyone has access to early parish records or other records from these locations. Who are the earliest Bosleys (or variant spellings) that can be found? Can we cooperate and put together family trees for the earliest Bosleys from each of these regions?

Are Bosleys from these four different regions (including Cheshire) all related, or do they have completely separate origins? We can learn the answer if Bosleys from these regions participate in the Bosley Surname DNA project,
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Bosley

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net

The Bosley Surname DNA Project website is up:
Background: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/bosley/
Goals: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/bosley/default.aspx?sect...
DNA Results: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/bosley/default.aspx?sect...

There are no DNA results at the moment (as of January, 2012), since the project is new, and processing takes a couple of months. First results should appear by March 2012, but we need more Bosleys from different regions and different lineages for comparison.

My impression, based on surname distributions in censuses from the 1800s, as well as birth/marriage/death references to Bosleys before 1600, is that there may have been AT LEAST two distinct major origins of Bosleys in England.

* Are most Bosleys from Berkshire, Herefordshire, Somerset, & Gloucester (~ Wessex) related? How far in the past was the most recent common ancestor?
* Are Bosleys from Cheshire a completely separate group from those of Berkshire etc.? Or are there several different Bosley lineages from Cheshire /Staffordshire?
* For Bosleys in the melting-pots (metro areas like London /Middlesex, or in regions abroad, the colonies), from WHICH group of Bosleys did your lineage originate?

With enough people tested for comparison, we can get very clear answers to questions like these.

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net

DNA testing for Bosley families

Comparing Y-chromosome DNA between different families having the same surname is a VERY powerful technique for genealogy, since Y-chromosome DNA is passed down from father to son like surnames are. DNA testing can show which families are closely related, and which are not. It can also show how to subdivide members of a large, old family into different branches.

I've just started the Bosley Surname DNA Project in order to facilitate DNA comparisons between different Bosley families. I hope males with the Bosley surname (or any related surname) will join the project and be tested.

Are all Bosleys related, or are there several different lines? The usual story offered is that all Bosleys originate from the Manor of Bosley in Bosley, Cheshire, England. Personally I doubt this very much. There were at least two "Manor of Bosley"s in England, the second one being in Dorset since AD 985. Further, the frequencies of Bosleys are not high in Cheshire /Staffordshire, contrary to what one would expect if this were the origin. In the 1881 census, the highest frequencies were in Berkshire, Herefordshire, & Somerset. Even Gloucester, 4th on the list, had twice the frequency of Bosleys that Cheshire /Staffs did. So it may well be that most Bosleys from Berkshire etc had a different origin than the Bosleys from Cheshire /Staffordshire. We can find this out by comparing Y-chromosome DNA.

I descend from Walter Bosley of Maryland, born in England circa 1660, claimed (without support that I can find) to be from somewhere in Staffordshire. Since my father was not a Bosley, I can't do the test to represent Bosleys myself, but my cousin has agreed to do it if I organize the comparisons. I hope others, both from families in England and in the colonies, will help us get REAL data on origins of the Bosleys.

Soon I expect to have a Bosley DNA Project web page at the testing company's web site, familytreedna.com, however it has not been set up yet. Meanwhile, to find out more, you can look at my Thrift DNA Project pages site map here, as an example:
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA
There is a link to the "BACKGROUND" page, which contains important information about DNA testing. There is also a link to FTDNA's page where the test can be ordered.

To see in detail the type of things can be learned by comparing DNA, see this page
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp
There are several quite distinct Thrift lines, one of which has been in the northern part of the colony of Virginia since ~1650 --the earliest known person in that lineage was Nathaniel Frith. Two other US families claimed to descend from this Nathaniel Frith (one in Georgia, one in North Carolina). We have proven that those two families are totally unrelated to the Nathaniel Frith /Thrift line from northern Virginia, BUT instead the Thrifts from North Carolina ARE closely related to the Thrifts from Dinwiddie Co, VA. We expected the Frith /Thrift line from northern VA to match Friths from England, but we have not seen that (yet). Instead, we found that a Thrift family traced to Hampshire, England ~1730 is almost an identical match to the Frith /Thrifts of VA. The Most Recent Common Ancestor shared by these two lines must have been born before 1650, yet the closeness of the families is still clearly shown by the DNA! So, now we have a strong clue to the origins in England of the Thrifts of northern Virginia. We are hoping that Thrifts, Friths & Firths from elsewhere will join that project, so we can see if Thrifts from Hampshire are related to Thrifts from Kent, Fife, etc. Other findings about Friths & Firths are shown on the web page linked above. You can imagine how important these findings have been to the families involved. With your help, the same type of family relationships can be shown for Bosleys.

Participants are kept anonymous, identified only by "kit number" and earliest known ancestor. The DNA is collected in your home easily and painlessly from cheek cells, by gently swabbing the inside of the cheek. A kit nicely designed for the purpose is mailed to you, which you return to the company by mail.

This DNA test is extremely limited, in the sense that it conveys NO information about genetically transmitted health issues, etc. The DNA tested here is in a unique part of the Y chromosome where there are no genes. Although this DNA can change or mutate over several generations, the mutations tested here have NO effect on the individual; the results are basically just numbers that vary between different individuals & families.

Disclaimer: I am a volunteer, I am not associated with FTDNA, and I do not make any money from these tests or this project.
I would be glad to answer any questions.

Thanks
Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net

Re: Thomas P. Bosley

I'm glad I took the time to read old messages because you have helped me considerably, and perhaps my information might still help you at this late date. My information is that Elijah Bosley was the son of Benedict Bosley and Elizabeth Bosley (m. 2/5/1793 in MD.). Elijah was born in Bourbon Co., KY and first married Mary (last name still unknown) on 6/1/1825. Three children were born from this marriage: Eliza Jane, 1827; Rachel C., 1828 ; Martha, 1832. I believe that Mary dies in July 1834. Elijah marries Catherine Potts (your information :) - my family information only said Katherine, b. 4/21/1816, m. 8/19/1835, d. 11/16/1836). Thomas P. Bosley was born Nov. 8, 1836, and obviously, his mother Catherine died shortly thereafter. Elijah then marries Harriet Clayton on 4/13/1837. Two daughters are born in KY. in 1838 and 1839, and by 1841 the entire family moves to Rush Co., IN where two sons are born, one in 1841 and in 1844. My great-grandfather is Samuel H. Bosley, b. 1844.
Thomas P. and Samuel B. were half-brothers who grew up together, and I now understand that the initial P. originated from Potts - mystery solved!
My information is that Thomas m. Nancy Smith (b. about 1839) on 8/25/1854 in IN. and five children were born in IN. between 1856-1869. Around 1870 they moved to Grundy, MO. where it appears they had one more child together in 1871. Nancy dies before the 1880 census because Thomas is married to Sarah by then and more children are born beginning in 1878.

Although I am searching a different BOSLEY ...the area is correct. I was near Weston in Lewis Co yesterday searching for Olen Elbridge Bosley who married Clara Lemmons and had a son Warden, born 1895. I believe Olen died abt 1898, and Clara died 1908 after remarrying. But no trace of their young son. There is a small but very good genealogical library just east of Weston at I-79 on Rt 33 / but I was not able to find what I was looking for, in the short time I had to spend there. Please contact me at mrsdrperry@aol.com
My Great Grandmother was a Bosley, from Little Marcle, Herefordshire, born 1867. Seem to be Bosleys there for most of the 1800's.

Be interested to hear from anyone related to this strain of the Bosley family.

Mu Great Grandmother then moved up to Buckinghamshire, although her family remained around Tewkesbury / Ledbury

My grandfather was Richard Bosley born 1848 in North Union Twp. Fayette Co. His father was Jacob Bosley born 1824 mother Sarah Hardy born 1821. I believe Jacob's father was Jacob Bosley born 1783. I am having a difficult time connecting past this time. There is a Jacob Bosley born 1783 died 1834 buried in Percy Methodist Cem. along with my grandparents. So I believe he is Richard's grandfather.
