For the past two years, I've been submitting obituaries to the Bossier Parish Keeper of LaGenWeb and have found that the website has not been updated in ten years! I was wondering if any other members have experienced this. It's not adoptable like Caddo and Webster and I have no problems submitting obits and newspapers to other parishes so far.

William D. Vanarsdale was murdered 1 Aug, 1867, the murder witnessed by Eliza Sergeant/Sergin, his cook, the mother of Grandison and Canada Vanarsdale. Another witness was Lucius Van or Vanarsdale b. about 1860 or so. I am trying to find information on Lucius Van, where he lived, why he does not appear in any census.
Allen Family Letter

I have found a letter written in 1962. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? A section of the letter follows:

"Margaret Leonora Lenoir, youngest sister of Emma Lenoir Sims, was married to Abel Orville Allen, who was born November 25, 1859, in Mansfield, De Soto Parish, Louisiana. Abel Allen's father was thrice married, the three wives being cousins.

The Allen family originally sprang from the King's family in the Revolution and had its immediate origin in royal blood. The original stock was a family from France named Le Brun. The mother of Abel Allen was Louisiana Bossier.

Abel came to Texas in January of 1883 and settled on a large tract of land near Hico, Hamilton County. Abel had two sisters: Maggie, older than he, and Etta, youger. The latter still lives in Louisiana. Abel was the only boy of this family.

Their [Abel Allen and Margaret Lenoir] home places in De Soto Parish were neighboring plantations, being separated only by a brook. By quirk of fate, however, they did not become acquanited until Maggie went back, from Johnson County, Texas, home of her sister, Emma, to visit her othere sister, Ella, who lived in De Soto Parish. There she met Abel O. Allen, who she married on August 23, 1882.

Abel and Maggie Allen still live on their farm on the Bosque River near Hico. Five children were born to them: [I will only include first names here, not the listed occupations] Constance, William Sims, Lenoir, Frank, Mattie Claire."

The surnames I am researching are King, Lenoir, Bossier, Sims and Le Brun. Allen is a cousin surname of my direct line, however if this letter is to be believed, my parents could be related, which will be hillarious when I tell them at Christmas.

The letter continues with lots of names, dates, and stories related to the names listed above.

I'm descended from Marie Eugenia Clotilde Bossier (born 9-16-1833), daughter of Marie Lise Victorie Desiree Sompayrac (born Oct 3, 1816) & Jules Victor Bossier (born 6-30-1806).

According to my info, Marie's father Jules Victor Bossier died in 1840 when Marie Eugenia Clotilde Bossier was 7 years old. I don't know when Marie's mother died and am interested in knowing that information. I am under the
assumption that Marie Eugenia Clotilde Bossier was raised by another family and went by the name Clotilde before she married Jean C Janin in 1852.
The most distant Bossier I have information about is my 6th Great Grandfather who was Jean-Baptiste? [Jean-Pierre?, Jean-Adam] [dit LeBrun???] who was married to Anne Chennion [Chenion, Chagneau,Chaignot, Chaniau]. I would love to go back even farther, if you have information.
My most recent Bossier is Emelie [Marguerite?, Emilitte? Emelite] who married Pierre Simon Hotard [Outard] on 27 Jan 1807.
The Gaiennies are related to the DeGruys as are the Hotards. I'd love to know about the duel.
I knew R. R. Bossier because I grew up in Queensboro Baptist Church. My maiden name was Beverly Watt and I thought maybe he was connected to my husband's family. His great grandmother was Laura Ann Bossier, the daughter of Sylvester Debrun Bossier. Laura married John Livingston Lum, my great grandfather.

BOSSIER / BOSSIE' letter >1806 > Natchitoches County, Louisiana
Attached are photocopies of two letters dated March 1806 and July 1806, written from Natchitoches County, Louisiana. The author was writing to "Mon Oncle" ("my uncle"), and the letters were addressed to Charles BARRE' in Opelousas. The authors signature is a bit flourished and difficult to decipher, but is looks like it is a BOSSIE' [BOSSIER] signature.

These letters were written in French.

Charles BARRE' was a brother of Rosalie Charlotte BARRE' (wife of Francois Paul BOSSIER I), and Charles BARRE' was an uncle to their BOSSIER children.

Hopefully someone will a look at these photcopies of the letters and compare the signature to other Natchitoches Parish/County BOSSIER / BOSSIE' signatures of that era.

I am trying to learn the full name/identity of the person who authored those letters. (an English translation would be nice, too <grin>).

The March 1806 letter consists of one page front and back, one side being the letter, the other side being the cover. The July 1806 letter consists of a two page letter plus the cover.

The original letters are in the John Close papers collection, housed in the Special Collections Department at Hill Memorial Library at LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The collection consists of about 300 - 325 letters and other documents dated 1802 through 1872. Early documents were addressed to Charles Barre', his son-in-law, John Close, and the later letters (after 1865) were addressed to John Close's son-in-law, Desire' Godet.

Re: Pompose Placide Bossier

Hello and thank you for posting this information. The information you located was actually posted by me - smile. They misspelled my first name however. It's good to know that this information is readily available just in case someone else is looking for Pompose. I did get a possible lead from a volunteer at the Natchitoches Genealogical Library. He noted a baptism record of a Marie Pompose, mulatto, born March 4, 1799, daughter of a slave named Genevieve (slaveholder's name was Louis Buard). Her godparents are Marie Therese Eugenie Buard and guess who? PLACIDE BOSSIER. Interesting. I'll have to research this more to see if this could possibly be the Pompose I am looking for. I am still baffled why she took on the middle and last name of Placide Bossier. Placide is NOT a female name. Perhaps she used the name to help her in her business dealings since Placide Bossier was a well known and respected name all over Louisiana - this may have worked to her advantage being a free person of color in a slaveholding society. Again, thank you for your desire to help!

Hello. Thank you so much for your reply. I haven't checked the message boards in a while so I did not realize you send a reply. The baptism record you referenced is interesting. I have seen this record before but I am not absolutely sure this is the same Pompose. I have copies of the land patent you are referring to and the subsequent succession opened upon her death. Our family is still in possession of a portion of the original land reference in the original land patent (most is no longer in the family). I have been to the Genealogical Library in Natchitoches but I am still baffled about Pompose. How/Why did she take the middle and last name of PLACIDE BOSSIER? Is this because her godfather was PLACIDE BOSSIER or is it possible he may have been her father? She is also connected to the well known Rambin family also. In fact the person who opened the succession on her property was a free man of color named Louis Rambin, he was one of only 14 free people of color in all of DeSoto Parish in the 1860 Census. Anyway...enough of my rambling. I plan to visit Natchitoches within the next two weeks. I hope to visit the courthouse to see if I can find manumission papers on Pompose Placide Bossier or Marie Pompone. Thank you for taking the time to find the baptism papers. I will definitely rethink this. God bless you!

Colette, my gg grandmother was Elisa Bossier. We have been able to research to her marriage in 1860 to gg grandfather, Aristede Renaud. I was wondering if you had any Bossier's in St. Landry or St. Martin Parish.

Thanks, Robin Rafferty
