Hi Roland thanks for your information. Do you think this Jonathan may be linked to the Goostry Cum Barnshaw Bostocks? My connection to this Jonathan is that he is my Husbands 2xGreat Grandfather, through his son Jonathan. My husbands father was Jack, born 1926, son of William born 1896. Any information would be welcome

Hi Carol,

If you have his 1851 and 1861 census records, the clue is there. 1851 says he was born in Heaton Norris, age 39, mill warper, and 1861 says he was born in Stockport, age 49, mill warper.

This ties in to Jonathan, born 10/4/1812, and baptised on 12/6/1812 at Tiviot Dale Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Heaton Norris. The IGI also says he was baptised the same day at Stockport Methodist, but I think it is Tiviot Dale.

His parents were James and Mary Ratcliffe, who married 11/12/1797 at Mottram in Longdendale, and they had 7 children, all in the IGI I think. But I don't go further back than that.

I'm not related, but do all Bostocks. Tell me your connection.

Roland
(Roland@Bostock.net)

They inherited a considerable amount of money from John bostock when he died. My grandmother died in 1974 . I wish I had asked her more about her life. I have a christening cup with the initials JB which my grandmother told me belonged to the family

Hi Janine.

I keep a watch on the Bostock Message Board as I trace all Bostocks. Jessica M. Bostock is somewhat isolated, and I don't have relations for her.

BUT, doing the obvious which is to use FreeBMD for a Bostock/Dix marriage shows the almost certain required answer that John Bostock married Mary Ann Dix in Atherstone, Warw in Sept quarter 1902.

However, I do have one problem. The other possibility is that this John could have married Gertrude Moseley. I have no direct evidence that he did (I've not see a certificate) but if you refer to this page:

http://www.bostock.net/tree/bostgen/names/athe/john1880.html

you will see that I have used this marriage to Gertrude Moseley, and that I have the detail as 5/8/1902 at St. Mary, Atherstone. This detail was provided by a member of the family on a Mormon Archive Record (SLCAR) that I have a copy of. So I wouldn't normally doubt it.

What do you think?

Roland
(Roland@Bostock.net)

Hi,

Pardon for the delay. It does appear you have a copy of the marriage certificate. Finding John's parents will not be easy.

To obtain the birth certificate of Emily do the following: use FreeBMD to find the district/page details of the birth registration, and then use this site to order the birth certificate:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/contact_us.a...

It used to cost £7, perhaps it is now £10.

When you look up Emily remember to use Emily Bowstock born in 1858.

If you gain the slightest extra information, I'll be glad to try and find more on your John.

Best wishes,
Roland@Bostock.net

Thanks so much for your reply. The certificate lists Catherine's father as William Fewster, Labourer, but it does not list any family for John Bostock. The marriage document I have may be a registration (it is a very poor photocopy). At the top of the document if reads:

"1857 Marriage solemnized at Westminster Chapel in the District of Westminster in the County of Middlesex"

It provides the number (64); the date Thirtieth March 1857; and it is signed with the marks of John Bostock and Catherine Fewster. It notes that they were "Married in the Westminster Chapel James Street according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Congregationists". At the bottom it reads

"I certify that the above written is a true copy of an Entry in the Register Book of Marriages, in the District of Westminster extracted this thirtieth day of March 1857." I believe the marriage may have been performed by a Mr. Pearsall.

I have a vaccination notice for Emily Bowstock dated August 1858 but I have not been able to find any information regarding her birth whatsoever. If you can point me in the right direction or offer any suggestions, I would appreciate the information. Thanks again!

Hi,

I have some pretty complete records, but your query eludes me. I can see the marriage registration you refer to, and I can also see that Emily was registered as Emily Bowstock in Sept quarter 1958 in Westminster, but I can't match John to either the 1851 or 1861 census to progress it further.

You say you have the marriage certificate which would normally name John's father and his occupation, and it can be obtained. Are you perhaps just looking at the parish register entry? (but they normally say the same).

If you find any more clues, do drop me a line.

Roland
(Roland@Bostock.net)

I have a copy of a marriage certificate of John Bostock, Private Soldier, of St. George's Barracks at 10 Holland Street marrying Catherine Fewster, spinster, of Horseferry Road. The wedding took place on March 30, 1857 at Westminster Chapel in Middlesex, England in the presence of Benjamin Haylor Cobden and William Sykes. John Bostock was listed as age 23 and Catherine was listed as age 25 at the time of the marriage. I am trying to find information on John Bostock's family and what happened to John and Catherine. Their daughter Emily (or Emma) was born in 1858 and was sent to Canada where she became a servant to one of the Honsberger families in Jordan, Ontario (as per 1871 Canadian census under the name of Emma Fuster). Emily is my great grandmother and we are having difficulty finding information about her father's family and what happened to both her parents.

Hi Roland,
I see you addressed this to a Brenda. Unfortunately, that's not me. I thought you may have been able to make a breakthrough with my branch of the BASTOCKS. I was puzzled when you mentioned a family photo. I hadn't remembered putting one on line.
My BASTOCK line (Sometimes mistakenly named BOSTOCK on censuses and such) are originally from Warickshire. They later moved to Liverpool, and some of them finished up in Preston. I'm particularly trying to find a cousin of mine. I don't have her married name, but her maiden name was Barbara BUCHARD and her mother was a BASTOCK: Florence "Maud" BASTOCK. I'd also like to find some of my half-brother's children. His name was Alfred James BASTOCK, as was my dad's.

Sincerely,
Lilian Bowen (formerly BASTOCK)

You can find a draft of a manuscript on Valentine posted illegally by Wanda Dunlap at http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeoithb/Out%20of%20the%20Mist.htm. This was an early draft of our work on Valentine, which we mistakenly entrusted to Wanda Dunlap for her critical review. Rather that providing comment, she posted our material in its entirety without permission. That's a long story for another day. If you are still interested in Valentine, we have greatly added to our material and will gladly share. Hope to hear soon. Bob and Julie.

I am descended from the Bostocks of Merefield House, Haslington and have managed to go as far back as John Bostock Born 1598 in Coppenhall/Haslington. Married Ellin Jamison. This info is thanks to the fantastic research carried out on the Bostock tree. I cannot find John's parents and any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Alexia,

I think it still adds up. I think you are not finding the birth of Joan Pickles because she was born Joan Bostock in March quarter 1920 in Hemsworth, Yorks. The marriage certificate should confirm her parents. If it is a second marriage as I am guessing then her father will be John Bostock (who died in 1972, and was a pony driver in 1911).

Of course if her father was a Pickles then these thoughts are in vain.

Roland
(Roland@Bostock.net)

Hi! I just came across your correspondence, whilst researching family history relating to Mary Ann Blower(nee North) and her husband, Charles Blower. They travelled with Frank C Bostock and Susie Bostock from the Uk to New York on the SS Campania in March 1896. I believe that Mary Ann (my great grandmother) was a lion tamer, and that she was clawed across the breast at sometime! (an occupational hazard). They travelled in the US, she had a child in Connecticut, and returned home before 1899.

Thanks Sharon,

I have not seen the 1841 census which helps a lot. I only had Samuel (1821) and Alexander (1833) as children of Samuel and Margaret. I also had Margaret down as Ford or Forbes. Not sure where I picked up Forbes from, but Jean Forbes in the census is also interesting.

Well found in Ancestry.com

Roland

I have been searching for a Robert Bostock born in Edingurgh, Midlothian in about 1823. His Daughter Isabella, married a William Charles Cameron. They had three children, Eliza Isabella, Hannah Maria Bartley(my grandmother), and Robert Samuel Bartley.

By 1871 Robert was in Lancashire.

I was intrigued by your query as you mentioned the name Samuel. Is this line related to the line you are looking at.

I have very little information on this branch of my family tree. Any help you (or anyone) can give me is greatly appreciated . I can also be contacted at

lin-den@sympatico.ca

Elaine

I don't know how much you already know, or where in London you are intending to go. You might find it helpful to know that the collection of parish registers belonging to the Guildhall Library are temporarily in the London Metropolitan Archives. Their number is 020 7332 1868.

One tip - don't download and use their map, or you will get lost. Better to use the A to Z if you don't know the way.

It will be a few weeks before I can have another go at it, so I wish you good luck.

Shean
I researched this line many years ago, and thought I had it complete to Philip Bostock, born 1695 at Wandsworth. Having returned to my research after an absence of several years, I have found that my dates do not add up. I have Charles as the father of James and as the son of Philip. This means that Charles died eight years before his son was born. When I can have a couple of days in London, I'll go through the parish registers again.

Hello Elaine,

Not completely sure if you have seen this family in www.bostock.net. You say James was married to Sarah, but I have him as a carpenter, and married to Elizabeth.

I have tried hard to trace him further back, but I can't do so.

The www.bostock.net ref is:
http://www.bostock.net/tree/bostgen/names/hack/james1770.htm...

Roland@Bostock.net
