I believe Daniel is the son of Mathew (1800-1888) and Eliza (Betsy) Ryder (1800-1867) Boughton for these reasons:

- His age matches a son of Mathew's on 1830 and 1840 censuses

- His place of birth, New York, and that of his parents, New York, matches on subsequent censuses

- He lived in Henderson County, Illinois where other members of this family lived

- His name is the same as Mathew's eldest brother

- He lived on the next farm over on the 1860 census

I know this isn't conclusive but it is very suggestive.

The Wellington Bouton who was born May 11, 1843, possibly in Rensselaerville NY (and also lived in Waterloo, NY), is in the 1890 Bouton and Boughton Family Book, on p. 560.
He married Mariette Knowles, according to the book (which is known to have errors).
He was the son of BALDWIN (1797-1849)& SUSANNAH BOUTON.
Baldwin was son of SAMUEL (1772-1841) & ADA BOUTON.
Samuel was son of SHUBAEL BOUTON (b. 1740-49 Norwalk, CT), and that should be a searchable name!

Julie

I was in the local book store yesterday. I saw a book about Louis 14ths wars. In it there is info about Nicholas count of Chamilly. He was a strong suporter of Conde the top military advisor to the king of France. It says that Nicholas was in charge of over 5,ooo troops. When Conde was assasinated during the wars of Religion more than likely Nicholas fled France. The records of Essex county England have his son John living in there, until He emmigrated to
New England in 1635.

David,

Sorry I haven't been following this lately--lost track.

Your information matches mine (some dates are slightly different), except that Alice's last name is left blank in all the recent research I'm aware of. Do you know that someone has proven her name to be Kellogg? Do you have a source you're willing to share?

My info. comes from a researcher who studies the early families of Fairfield County, CT, and who cites articles in The American Genealogist, and Jacobus' book, Families of Old Fairfield, as well as the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 51.

And to Mccluec1, I haven't heard anything about a Alice Pratt, but generally the early American "Johns" are listed as "Bouton," or "Bowton," as it is/was often spelled in England. In my family, Bouton changed to Boughton in the 1700s and as they moved west, although I've seen both spellings even within one family.

Julie
(Julia Boughton Gibson)

I have seen the marriage of John Boughton to Alice Kellogg sounded and vehemently disputed, but the wife of John is Alice "somebody." I have seen a record of John Bouton b. 1615, m. Alice Pratt in 1636. Is there any support or refutation for the idea this may be our John Boughton, given the common discrepancy in the spelling of Boughton? I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder about this, but I have not seen it mentioned anywhere. Probably someone knows it to not be true; and I would love to put my mind to rest. Help?

Re: boughton family gloucestershire

Hi Claire,

My ancestors Boughton were from Newnham and Westbury on Severn, Glouc., and lived mainly at Broadoak which is halfway between these towns. My line came to Australia in 1862.

I believe that Adsett was part of the area where the Rodley Boughton family lived - either a townland, or the name of a home. Whatever, it's definitely ringing bells for me, and I haven't worked on our Boughtons for many, many years. I think a John Boughton was of Adsett back in the early 1800s, but I'd need to read my files before I could be sure. I think one of the Josephs was there too. My ancestor was a William son of Joseph, who was son of Joseph, and it seems all the Boughtons were related from Tewkesbury to Newnham in the old days. Forest of Dean folk too. I remember visiting a cemetery in 1989, I think at Rodley, and there were a number of Boughton graves - I have video of myself reading some of them, at some time during one of my many trips o/s.

If you wish to write to me privately then I'm at jmorrish1@bigpond.com

I'm in Victoria, Aust., and if you could tell me where you live then I may be able to help at least by some direction, but can't guarantee this unless you have your documented evidence back to 1860 because post this date my research has been in Australia. I seem to recall that Rodley was near Westbury on Severn, but my memory could be slipping!

Could you give me the dates of birth/death of your grandmother and Cecil? If you live in England then this may be useful.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Judie Morris.

Working my way through a wedding invitation list ( 1915, Washington, DC, my grandfather's cousin.). The fourth line on the list reads, "Boughton, Mrs. E. R. (Eugene)C) 1602 K. Street." From this I would gather that this Eugene Boughton had died sometime earlier.

I do not know the significance, if any, of the )C - it looks as if the typist had tried to remove it. I am checking back with the owner of the list to determine if the photocopy I have is of the original list or a later transcription.

This may not assist in your searches but does put them at a particular address in a particular year.

From what I understand, his father, last name Button or Bouton lived in Florida before moving to Michigan. The Eugene Boughton I am refering to was born in 1875. It is only the name Eugene that drew my attention to your post.
I am just beginning my search for family history.
I doubt there is any connection here, however I thought I would at least share the information with you.

Lisa- Please email me at drlzoe@earthlink.net. I am sure we are connected, but the question would be how.
How many generations can you get back? Do you have dates of birth death for these folks? My family lived mainly in New York-
Macedon; Victor; Boughton is not that common of a surname- though there were many in the Victor area- most were related. Wellington Eugene is a name that has been passed down in our family since mid 1800s.
I have found a Wellington BOUTON in one of my searches born May 11, 1843 in Albany NY. He may be one of yours- Many changed their name to Boughton later. I know one of mine went by both.
Good luck with your search!
Zoe Boughton

I hadn't heard this name used in any other lines- it surprises me, as they were named (I thought) for a Wellington Kelly who died quite young, and Eugene Boughton who died in the civil war. Please contact me- as my family is also from New York, so we must be connected somehow.

My friend is from these families and has inherited Polycystic Kidney disease. She will die if she doesn't get a kidney transplant from someone who matches with Type O blood. She's been a devoted mom and teacher. She's been on the transplant list for a year already. Her mom died from this disease and was from the Massachusetts area. So thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone would be willing to donate a kidney. Thank you sooo much!
Karen

I did try to contact the town clerk for Scio for birth records, but apparently the building holding the records burned down in 1904, and the records were turned to ash.

There may be adoption records out there with information I could use but I don't think New York State allows access to them.

Nancy,
The Boughton line is not a direct connection to my Lawless family only in the fact that William E. Lawless married Viola Boughton, his wife number 2. Their daughter Daisy was born in 1875 in Winterset and as we have discussed she dropped from all records that I can find after the 1895 Iowa State Census. William E. Lawless was first married to Submit Peck in Portage County, Ohio in 1870 and their son, James E. Lawless born in 1871, is my husband's g grandfather. Submit Lawless died six months after the birth of her son and William left him to be raised by the maternal grandmother. According to the Civil War pension papers of William Lawless he never saw his son again and did not even know if he was still living. So Viola Boughton and her daughter Daisy are the only connections I have to that period in William Lawless' life.
I would be interested in any information you might have on Viola's siblings.

Thank you,
Linda

Back when I first started this family hx stuff, I ran into someone who sent me stuff on Boughton's in NY. There were 3 Boughton men who Stone women. But working from that end got me nowhere. But I still have the material stored away and will get to it as soon as I can and go trrough it again. Right now all my stuff is packed up, as we are considering a move to Colorado some time in the next few months. How interested are you in the Boughton Line? Dan's line comes through Augustus Boughton.

Nancy,
I believe the S. stands for Daniel Stone Boughton. Daniel Baoughton married Louisa Jackson on October 31, 1843 in Washington County, Iowa. I do have the census records on Daisy Lawless but after 1895 she drops out of site. I have checked all the marriage records that I have access to and have found nothing. In the 1900 census, Louisa Boughton is living in Araphoe Co., Colorado as the mother in law of William Cobb and wife Esther. Daniel died September 19, 1873 in Winterset and I think Louisa moved often after his death. In 1900 census my William Lawless and Viola were living in Loup, Cherry Co., Nebraska. In 1910 William and Viola were divorced and he was living in California and in 1920 William Lawless had remarried and moved to Roseburg, Douglas Co., Oregon. They sure loved the West!

Thank you for your replies!

Linda

Hi, I found Daisy in 1880 census in Winterset, Iowa living with Grandma Louisa. age 4. In the 1885 Iowa State census age 8 living in Plattville, Mills Co., Iowa. Would you be able to get a hold of a early 1900 marriages records book/tape and see if you might find her married name that way? I don't really have any info on Daniel and Louisa's children. It took me a long time to get my Daniel connected to him, even though I felt it was there. Do You know what the S. stands for in Daniels name? Good Luck
