Cool that was the date! From Memory I said 1666, I was close. I am also from that John Bounds. Small world eh? Check out my tree and see what we have in common. I am rebuilding mine once again. I am getting closer to all my boxes of genealogy research. My Bounds' were from Maryland and VA. The book , "The Boundless Bounds" by Ruth T. Dryden researched it back to that area.

My Bounds family....William A. Bounds b 1857 (Big Creek) which is town of Rat, Shannon Co, MO, Moore Twp. My grandmother told me how all her family the Burns and the Bounds were all from that area at least for quite some time. She never knew the town was called Rat. I wrote to Mo and got a cute little letter which stated that the post master wanted to call the town Buckhorn as he had a fine pair of them hanging up at his post office. He was refused as elsewhere in MO there was another town already with the name. So he got angry and called it RAT. I always laugh at that. Us Bounds are very stubborn and crafty people! My grandmother's birth name was Hester Virginia BURNS. She haded the name Hester so she always went by Virginia. Us kids never knew her name was Hester, lol. Another family secret. She married Walter Lee Bounds (her parents made her but she had her eye on a preacher. The day she died she still talked about how she loved that preacher and always longed to marry him)My grandmother said on her Burns side her mother Rachel Isabelle Goforth was half cherokee indian and Rachel's mother Nancy Skidmore was full blood cherokee indian. So far no one can confirm this. Does anyone know about this? I mentioned this as you talked about the Choctaw. My grandmother (Virginia) often got things mixed up, maybe if they were indian it could be another tribe.

I have just joined for the first time to this site. I had been doing my family tree for over 30 yrs. Only to have the computer wiz wipe out all of those research years in a few mins. That was 6 yrs. ago. I have all the hard copy in my storage and have been slowly getting closer to touching it once again, Yippe!

Anyway I am related to the John Bounds you speak of. Mine goes all the way back to 1666 if I remember correctly. I hit the gold mine when I found the Boundless Book at the Historical in Madison WI many years back.

Most of the ancestors then were from Salisbury MD (or county)..it has been a long time since I have seen those papers. I copied everything I could get my hands on. I hadn't traced over to England but sure would be happy to hear of some info.

Does anyone have pictures of Bounds? This is what I can remember:

Cheryl Bounds (me) b 1961 Pueblo, CO

Lee Bounds b 1926 St. Louis, MO deceased (forgot the year...damn memory)

Walter Lee Bounds b 17 Sept 1897 Rat, Shannon Co, MO d 1968
burried St. Louis (New St. Marcus Cemetery??)

William A. Bounds b Dec 1857 Rat, Shannon Co, MO

James Bounds b Sept. 1838 MO

Without my library of genealogy I can't remember the rest. I do know that the fathers went back and forth from James and John.

I can not attest to the accuracy of the death date. I do know that it was in the original book, the Boundless Bounds Family by Ruth Dryden. I have her original manuscript. Ruth was not very efficient at 'sourcing' her material, however.

Perhaps you could get someone from "Random Acts of Kindness' who lives in Pass Christian to do a cemetery lookup for you? He is in Marion County at the 1900 census, so why he died and/or is buried in Hancock County is a mystery.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Another couple of thoughts: Many women, when deserted or even were divorced from their husbands often said they were "widowed" to escape shame. In this case, unless there are some records that someone can find, we don't know for sure if this Elvira is actually a "daughter-in-law" that he took in with his Grandson, or whether it IS his son. We'll probably never know...This IS our Daniel, though, so we know he's not dead yet! Bersheba was just protecting her 'good name', I think.

Hi, there - Well, you're in for a surprise! Daniel didn't die until 1906, and you can find him in the 1900 census of Marion County, Mississippi with a 6 year old MELTON BOUNDS (probably Milton) and Elvira Bounds. He's 65 and she is 29! They were married in 1899. Weird, I'd say, but crazier things have happened! Daniel's death date is 3 Oct 1906 in Pass Christian, Hancock Co, MS.

Happy Hunting!

Starting anew with my research on Bounds, specifically Daniel Woodward b 1835,mar. Eliza Jane Scarborough (Bersheba).1880 Census shows them together with children. 1900 Census shows Bersheba (wid) in home with dau. Laura Bounds Key. Same census shows a Daniel Woodward Bounds born 1834 age 65 married for 1 year to wife Elmira, age 29 and son Melton, age 6.Does the Bounds Book make any reference to this relationship? If Bersheba was actually a widow in 1900, all the death dates for Daniel on most family trees are not correct. Can you help?

We always accept 'additions' to the database. We have no plans to publish another volume - we're all getting beyond the age of a production of that sort.
However, if you want to send me your info, I'll be happy to add it here. That way, if anyone else contacts me I can easily put the two of you together. I wish we COULD decide to produce a giant 'tree' on disc, but it would be a monumental task - more than we're willing to tackle. You also may ask me about any updates in your line that have been previously entered since the publication in 2000. Just let me know your main Bounds line and as far as it was taken in the book. I'll let you know if there have been any additions (or deletions!) Regards, Jinny

Hi Carol, My name is Sallie. I was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and now live in Maryland. My mother was Donna Marie Bounds Larsen, grandfather, James Bounds; great-grandfather, Lemert Bounds; great-great-grandfather, Henry Bounds, married to Hannah Rhoades. I am greatly interested in sharing information with you. Perhaps we can help each other since I believe that Henry and Thomas were brothers and came from Maryland. Where are you living? Do you have information as to where Hannah was born and her parents? I have visited Henry Bounds' gravesite in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillsdale, MI, where his son, Lemert, and my grandparents are buried. Since Henry married Matilda Hauser Iden and 'adopted' her nine children, I don't know where she is buried (perhaps with her first husband). I have a letter written by Lovina (in Illinois) to her brother Solomon (in Ransom, MI) and hope that these are part of your family line. Please, please use my email address as I am sharing this site with Joan Wade. It is dolphin.lady@comcast.net. I appreciate any and all bits and pieces to this puzzle. Many thanks.
Sallie Larsen Benson

Yes, I have info on children of Henry and Hannah Rhoades Bounds that extends the number of children. I am African American which would mean the relationship would stem from slavery and may or may not include a direct blood line. Regardless i am very intrigued, proud and interested in obtaining as much information about the Bounds family history here in North America.

Adeline Bounds

Sorry I had to stop for a while. Before coming back I did some research: John Wesley "Jack" Bounds is found in the 1850 census of Yallobusha County, son of James F. "Whitehead" Bounds and Joanna Diggs, age 12. Then in the 1860 census age 22 living and working with James Rousom Bounds. By 1870, he's married, 32 and Lavinia is 25; son, George, 4; Adaline, 3 and Eli, 2. In 1880 he was in Blue Ridge, Collin County, TX with Viney and his 8 children; in Henderson County by 1900 living next door to his son, George Washington and Annie Bowman Bounds. Margaret Adeline, their second born, abt 1867 in married James Williamson sometime around 1895 in Texas I would imagine. No record found yet. They had seven children, not just two! There are only two mentioned in the book, but I found morel Alma, Rosalie, Evelena, Cora, Otto, Iris and Beatrice. Do some looking , then see what other questions you have. However, I have no evidence that she married a Swain. Do you have any more information that would help us find the right Adeline?

Good spotting, 'Rockopop'! With that info I could find this entire family. So, the Adeline you're looking for is the daughter of this "Jack", however his birth name is JOHN WESLEY BOUNDS, born in August, 1838 in Mississippi, possibly in Yallobusha County. The original author of the Boundless Bounds book thought that his middle initial was "M" - easily confused in records. He is on page 233 in the revised edition, number 8:139 where you'll see him incorrectly listed as John MARTIN Bounds. He married Lavinia or Lavina "Viney" Kilgore on 8 Sep 1863 in Calhoun County. They had 10 children the second being Margaret ADALINE Bounds, b.abt 1867. She married James Cornelius Williamson and they had two known children, Beatrice and Otto. More later..... Jinny

Hi! I saw your notice. I have known about the Bounds family on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, because of going to O.C. in the summer. My Bounds family I can trace back to a Richard Bounds b. 3 Jan. 1756 Anne Arundel Co., Maryland married Susanna Forrest d/o Rezin Forrest. The 1790 census is water damaged so, I don't know if he was even there in 1790. I have only found three children listed in Rezin Forrest will of 1824- Rezin, Nancy Ann, and Susan.I have the book the"Boundless Bounds". The same names there are same ones repeated in my Bounds family. Could the coming to Annapolis in a boat, mean across the Bay? We were a generation off, too. Everytime I turn around Ancestry wants to point me to the Eastern Shore, which would be very easy now since I live here. Beverly Bounds Davis

I'm Beverly Bounds and am Bounds from both sides, my parents were second cousins once removed. I can only directly trace my Bounds family to 1800 Census Anne Arundel Co., Maryland( this is the Western Shore of Maryland). I have to get a professional to go further back, like property records. There is a Bounds family on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, who came to Maryland from Virginia in the late 1600's. Before that a John Bounds came from London by way of Barbados to Virginia. He , his wife, and son later movered to Somerset Co., Maryland. Beverly Bounds Davis

Also, some local related families in that area may have it.

Hi, I'm Kevin Bounds, also a direct descendant of Stephen Henry Bounds, who was the son of William M. Bounds. I have done much research on my own over the years on the Bounds family and provided info to Thomas and Alma Dean Cason who did a book on the Bounds' in 1996. I stopped pursuing any additional research after that but one question that has eluded me and no one seems to know the answer to, is where on any document the name "MADISON" appears in relation to William M. Bounds. I had some notes that had suggested that there may have been a North Carolina deed with that name on it but after many contacts in past years with the North Carolina Counties of both Anson and Richmond, no such deed or any other document has ever turned up in my research.

I have done plenty of research in Barbour County, Ala records and the only references and signatures on deeds etc are a mention of "William M. Bounds" Also the Bossier banner obituary of in 1880 at the time of his death in Rocky Mt, La only mentions W.M. Bounds, a native of North Carolina" in memory serves me right.

I've never seen the book by Ruth Dryden , but I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a mention of the 'source' of the name "Madison" in that book .

Also, to my knowledge it is only presumed that William M Bounds was the son of Stephen, who was son of James, based on ages of children (with no names) listed in early North Carolina censuses. I've yet to find a hard connection there as well. Although I do agree with that possible consensus, I would like to have it verified in some way.

Either way. would like to know where the name Madison comes from. :)

My GGrandfather George Washington Gardner married Stacy Bounds abt 1835. This information we have from family history. George and Stacy had 5 children before her (assumed) death: Elizabeth J. abt 1836, Joseph abt 1837, Susan Ann 1840, James abt 1842 and Francis R. abt 1846. I have not been able to locate a marriage record or parentage for Stacy. George's sister Elizabeth L. Gardner m Obediah Bounds, son of Sterling Bounds. I thought Stacy may have been a sister to Obediah, but have not found her listed on any census records. Could she have been a daughter of Charles Bounds? Could "Stacy" have been a nick name or a middle name? Any information on Stacy or any of her children other than Susan Ann (I have all of hers) would be SO greatly appreciated!!!!

Re: Addison Bounds

I don't know much about Isaac. Addison had a family in Pike Co. Mo. prior to the gold rush and civil war. His wife was Margaret Pritchett, their children were George Washington Bounds, Isaac Bounds and Margaret. From what I've gathered the whole family started for Ca. but his wife died. He went on to Ca. with his father and sister. I don't know if the boys went with him or not. The daughter was sent back to Mo. to her mothers family.
They were in the Pike Co. Mo. census and he was also in the Ca. census the year of 1850.
My first curiousity about family history started when I heard my great uncle say that Addison had one family in Boston and then came to Tx. and married and started another family.
After many years and research I learned about his first family. I couldn't figure the while story out until I found other Bounds researchers and a letter that made it all clear.
He was a sadler traveling with the southern army. At least one maybe both boys were with him and in the army. When they were in Ark. Isaac got sick and George & Addison left him in a town and continued with the southern army. About a year later Addison sent George back to get Isaac. The dad & boys never found each other again.
Addison met Luamma Parker Watson from Yell co. ark. and married her moving from there to Boston, Bowie Co. Tx. They had Jesse Monroe Bounds and Thomas. Thomas must have died young. Addison died about 1873, Luama remarried Jehu Holmes Campbell and Jesse went down to Bell Co. Tx. to work for his stepfathers uncle and aunt John Thomas Ward and Jane Orr Campbell.
G.W. eventually lived in Williamson Co. Tx. and became a preacher. I don't know about Isaac. Hopefully you are part of his family.
Do you have a Bounds male relative who would do a ydna test to compare to my Grandfather Warren Bounds son of Jesse Monroe Bounds and Susan Emma Shutler Ross? I have had Grandpa do a test but I only had his mtdna test done, however I can go ahead with the ydna test as the lab still has his dna. I went through familytreedna for the test.
We are thrilled that Grandpa is still living and in good health at 99 years old!
I'm sure you'd be interested in having a copy of the letter written by G.W. back in the 30's. I'll have to find my copy and scan it for you.
It's been ten years since I posted my query on ancestry.com.
Thanks so much for contacting me,
Debrah Modrall (dmodrall@wildblue.net)
Helen, I have forgotten your post. Have just been extremely busy. I don't recognize any of the names you mentioned but will run them by my information when I have a few minutes. I'm in Texas and would like to know where you are located. There are so many Bounds "branches," all of which are probably related back somewhere. It's been interesting finding cousins. Hope to hear back from you. ccw
