Hi Daniel, just picked up on your 2005 post. I am chasing the Bowdens. My direct line has the names Arthur-William-John-Emily as dominant. I have got back to 1774. The areas they lived in were Stepney, Shoreditch, Hackney We could have a connection. Look forward to hearing from you

Patricia

Hi Sandra, I am chasing the Bowden family. My mother was a Bowden by birth. So far I can go back to 1774 to John Bowden who died at 77yrs in Marylebone workhouse. My early Bowdens are concentrated around the Stepney/Holborn London area.My prominent names are Arthur - William - John - George. Look forward to hearing from you

Patricia

His wife, however is Jane Underhill. He worked as a policeman for most of his adult life. If you would like to get in touch maybe we could exchange some information.
Kind regards
Anita

My GGG grand parents were John and Ellen Bowden from Chesire. I don't know anymore about them. Their son, William, was born abt 1818 and the family were miners. I have no records when William migrated to Australia but he appears in Brisbane, Colony of Queensland abt 1849 and marries on 26/12/1849. I do not know if William had any siblings.

If anyone can be of help please contact me on rianda1719@bigpond.com

Jennifer Rooks
Queensland

Hi Jennifer

It is very strange indeed that you also have Bowdens in the family. I would love a copy of the grave photo, very much appreciated. I hope to meet you when you come over, also very stange I only live a mile if that from Rugeley, could not get much closer.

Now Kathleen seems to be a bit of a mystery, I have not been able to find any marriage record so far, and I have only been able to find one sailing in the name of Kathleen Fitzpatrick, which was on 21/4/1922 she was then 30 approx. (a year after Teresa first went out) sailing on the Moreton Bay into Brisbane. It shows her last address in England as the Colindale Hospital London. I am not sure if this is our Kathleen or not. The only other thing I have found is a Kathleen Fitzpatrick divorce from a George Bowden in 1913 in London, she would then have been 22 - am looking into this, but I feel it may be a bit to early.

I'll keep you updated as soon as I find anything more.

Best Wishes
Liz

I may try going down that track. I have been sent the grave photo for Timothy Bowden in Riverton. Do you want a copy?

I wonder who the Iskov family are, there are only 2 names currently in the White Pages for South Australia.

My gg grandfather was a Bowden from Cheshire so a small world.

Keep in touch. rianda1719@bigpond.com

Jennifer

William Henry Bowden

Help! My grandfather was named William Henry Bowden. He was born on July 10, 1859 and died exactly 96 years to the day later. However, it is as if he was the starter of all Bowdens in my line. Before 1890, our family seems not to exist in Arkansas and Louisiana, the two places where they might have been.

My branch of the family is believed to be Irish. Family story is that three brothers came over, one settling in the Viriginia area, one in Georgia/Florida and my branch coming in at New Orleans and settling in Louisiana and S.E. Arkansas.

Any cousins out there that have W.H. Bowden or William Henry Bowden or Will Bowden's parents? All older relatives are deceased and I didn't get the info that I needed before they passed. After 1900 he and his wife, Mary, lived in Desha County. But can't find anything before that

Hi Janice

Glad to see there is another addict!
I have found a record of a marriage of a William Burtinshaw (notice different spelling) There is also the spelling Bortinsham in the UK 1871 Census. But back to the marriage. The record refers to a marriage of a William Burtinshaw in Preston Lancashire, Northern England. and it is the 1837-1915 Marriages Index For Jul-Aug-Sep 1852 Volume 8e Page 511. William and Hannah (boh born in stockport) lived in Preston from at least the 1861 Census to the 1881 Census. So the above record looks pretty intersting. If you want to track Hannah you will need to buy the certificate from Ancestry (they are 25GBP in the UK). The certificate should have Hannah's father's name on it which will help to pin down which Hannah it is. Its' up to you

Also have you looked at the IGI website and put in name = burtenshaw, place of birth = australia, years = any?

I tried it and there are quite a few burtenshaws recorded for NSW. I think that if you havent already looked at it it will keep you busy for a while!

Incidentally, if you are interested it would be simpler to communicate directly by e-mail. My address is frankbowden25@gmail.com.

Finally for to-day my possible relationship to the 1823/1829 hannah is possibly that she may be a contemporary of my great great grandfather's children the eldest of whom was born 1n 1834.

Hope the floods are not too much of a problem

Frank

hi janice

"your" hannah bowden and william burtinshaw both baptised in stockport wound up in preston some 50 odd miles away in central lancashire. There was a great deal of movement mostly from the country to thge towns in the UK's industrial revolution as people left the grinding toil and uncertainty of agriculturalfor work in the factories, textile miles and coal mines.

I seem to be related to several hannah bowdens most originating in eastern cheshire. As I pointed out before we wont be sure which hannah is which without some prooof of what her dad's name was. The best bet for that would be a marriage certificate. Failing that it might be possible to narrow things down a bit if you can find marriage records for the other hannah bowdens baptised in stockport between say 1820 and 1835. If these rcords exist it should be possible to rule out the ones that did not marry a william. Often working by exclusion is the only way forward.

Word of warning - you can get obsessed with this stuff!!

Best of luck

Frank

Frank

hi again Jan.

I have done a bit of digging and found an 1861 Census record for a hannah burtenshaw born in Stockport in 1823. I know this does not match the 1881 Census dates. But there is no reason to take one over the other. There are at least five hannah bowdens born in Stockport in the range covered by the 1823-1829 dates. The only way that I think you would be able to sort out which is which would be to obtain a marriage certificate for Willam amd Hannah (always assuming they tied the knot officially) I have not managed to find a record of them marrying. If you could get a marriage certificate, it should show the name of Hannah's father. This should pin down which hannah it is and based on that I could probably point you in the right direction for hannah's cheshire ancestors. Good hunting

Frank Bowden

Hi Jan

I am working on the cheshire bowdens especially those in the area around stockport. There seems to have been a drift into stockport from areas such as hazel grove, poynton, bosden and pott shrigley which are all to the south of stockport. Hannah is a very common name for the bowdens and therefore "your" hannah may be a bit elsusive. However if you give me a little time. I'll see if she turns up in my research.

Regards

Frank

Hi Marie

As far as my research goes James and Betty Bowden married 30 May 1772 and may have had 10 children. The oldest Ann is recorded as being born in Adlington 01 Nov 1772! The other 9 are Mary 1776, James 1781, John 1784, Ellis or Elias 1787, Betty 1790, Ellen Nov 1791 (John Oct 1791?), George 1794 and Sarah 1796.

The only James I can find as a contender for the spouse of Betty was baptised in Marple in 1749 with the father recorded as a James. This James would most probably have been born around 1710 - 1720. There are two contenders here both baptised in Disley in 1722. For one the parents are recorded as an Anthony and Sarah and for the other Henry and Martha.

I am still working on this and if anything interesting turns up I will get back to you (e-mail = frankbowden25@gmail.com)

Kind regards and Happy New Year

Frank

Ellen Boden married John Lawton 13 dec 1814 at Prestbury and they had 6 children before she died in 1830, aged 40. I believe she is the daughter of James Boden and Betty ?Williamson who had 7 children from 1776 to 1796. Ellen was baptised 12 nov 1791 (the BTS give the child as John bap 9 oct). James seems to ahve been buried at Prestbury 18 Apr 1823, of Pott Shrigley, age 74, so he was born 1749. Can you tell me who his father was, please? Many thanks, Marie

If so it it is possible that a son of hos migrated to manchester and founded a line op manchester bowdens.
