I am a descndant of HERBERT JOHN BOWER who came over to fight in the Boer War and stayed on. Our Branch started here, but we have links to his family descendants in Bradford Yorkshire. He was last of 7 children

Yes, that all makes sense Gillian. I haven't looked for some time myself though. I had seen the names, but had not been able to cross-reference some to confirm the people were the same and of the right line. On the other side of my tree I managed to triangulate information and not rely simply on it appearing to be the right dates and times - you may have done this, but I have not been able to yet. The sort of thing I mean is middle names being the maiden name of the mother, or from wills that include the family names and relationships. It will have to wait for now anyway

My apologies for not replying sooner,but I moved house on 1 February and when your message came through I was still getting straight.The decorator and flooring people then seemed to move in and its only now that have the time to get back to the family tree.I have some more to add to the family tree but I can tell you that Thomas Bower (1737) married Mary Priest in 1758.His father was Thomas (1706)married to Elizabeth Hare in 1737.His father,also Thomas (1677) married Ann Pople in 1708 and his father also Thomas (1650) married Alice Berry.The last two Thomas`s originated from Sheffield then seemed to go to Missom when Thomas married Ann Pople.
Hope all this makes sense.Keep in touch and let me know if you come up with anything else.

Christopher Hanker was my great grandfather, born in Detmold, Germany abt1820. He married Mary Elizabeth Vamaker who was 22 yrs. younger. My grandfather, George Washington Hanker was born on board ship in 1865. He married my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Schlueter. They had three children: Edna, Hazel,(my mother) and Wm.
I'm trying to trace Christopher's family in Germany and wondering if he had been married before.

I have great news! A cousin, Greg Bowers, solved my brick wall mystery ancestor. It looks like Johannes Bauer {John Bowers} was the son of Christian Bauer {Bower} and Veronica Spickler {Spicker}.

The next mysteries, of course, are the Swiss parents of Christian and Veronica. Anyone out there able to identify Christian and Veronica’s parents?

Here’s a brief summary of what Greg discovered:

Christian Bauer {Bower}, was a miller by trade,
born: 5 December 1734 in Switzerland and
died: 18 January 1790 near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland at 55 years 1 month and 13 days old.

About 1767, Christian Bauer married Veronica Spickler.

Veronica Spickler {Spicker} was
born: 22 April 1742 in Switzerland and
died: 22 October 1796 near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland at 54 years old.

Christian and Veronica Bauer {Bower} were both buried in the Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery, formerly Bower’s Church Cemetery, near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland.

Christian and Veronica Bauer’s springhouse at 1322 Bachman Valley Road, Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland has been designated by the Maryland Historical Trust as a state historical site. It stands today, February 2012.

Children of Christian and Veronica Spickler Bauer {Bower} have been documented as follows:

1) Barbara Bauer may have been born around 1768. According to Christian’s will, Barbara had a daughter, Elizabeth {Elizabet}. According to the A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, Christian’s daughter, Barbara Bower married Martin Easterday of Frederick County in 1783. However, online researchers suggest that the Barbara Bauer who married Martin Easterday was in fact the daughter of Conrad Bauer and Maria Eva {last name unknown.} There was an Elizabeth Bauer buried in the cemetery next to Christian and Veronica Spickler Bauer’s tombstones who was born 7 June 1788 and died less than 2 years old on 2 February 1790.

2) Christian Bowers may have been born around 1769. Christian married Salome Yingling (Jüngling, Jungling, Yuengling) on 6 April 1790 in the Reformed and Lutheran Church, Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland. Ambrose Bower of A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families suggests that Martin Easterday married Salome after the death of her husband, Christian.

Christian and Salome Yingling Bauer’s children were Johannes {John} who married Christina Swickard, Christian, Susana, Salome, and David who married a woman whose last name was Harmon.

3) Johannes Bauer (John Bower) and Susanna {last name unknown}. See previous post for their family story.

4) Matthias Bower was born 13 January 1774 in Baltimore County, Maryland and died 2 May 1849, Plain Twp, Stark County, Ohio at 75 years old. He is buried in Warstler, Stark County, Ohio. On 5 December 1806 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, Mathias married Catherine Houck {Hauck, Hawk}. Catherine Houck was born 9 January 1775, Baltimore County, Maryland and died 14 August 1849, Plain Twp, Stark County, Ohio at 74 years old, 3 months after her husband died.

Mathias and Catharine Houck Bower’s children were Salome who married John W. Lautzenhiser {Loutzenheiser}, John, Jacob, Harriet who married Daniel Swihart, William who married Sarah Jane Grogg, Susan, Sarah who married Jacob Koontz, Eliza who married John Kimmel, Rachel who married Christian Anderson Zents {Sentz}, David who first married Elizabeth Golden and then Catherine Dean, and Anna who married Abraham Daniel Grogg.

5) Catherine (Caty) Bowers married Jacob Houck. Jacob may have been the brother of Catherine Houck who married Johannes’ brother, Matthias Bower.

6) Jacob Bowers married Elizabeth {last name unknown.} They had most of their children in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. Jacob and Elizabeth’s children were Jacob, Anne, George, Ester, Jacob, Margaret, Adam, Margaret and Mary Jane Bowers.

7) According to A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, it is suggested that Barnhart Bower was the son of Christian Bower. Online researchers disagree with this book and state Barnhart Bower was the son of Conrad Bower and Marie Eva {last name unknown,} just like the Barbara Bower who married Martin Easterday. Online researchers say that Barnhart Bower married Mary Minnick.

8) According to A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, it is suggested that Samuel Bower was the son of Christian Bower.

9) According to A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, it is suggested that Ambrose A. Bowers, 345 Fair Ave., NW New Philadelphia, Ohio, was the son of Christian Bower.

10) According to A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, it is suggested that the Honorable John P. Bower, member of the Ohio Senate, Rushsylvania, Ohio, was the son of Christian Bower.

I haven't made any effort to study my family tree for many years, but am just re-entering the info on FTM, and saw your post from 2009, so this is probably way too late now. I am descended from TGM Bower also, and have info back to his g grandfather, but no dates or details. The earliest I have is his grandfather Thomas, b 1736/7 and married to Mary. I was looking for more details when I saw your query.

My mother (now 88) was a Bower, TGM was my GGG grandfather I think, if I have counted correctly! It goes:

This is my first post looking for the family of Mary Eva Bower. I do not know her married name. She had a brother, Joseph A. Bower, who was my great-great grandfather. Their father was John Wenceslaus Bower/Bauer/Sedlecheck. The family story, that I can neither prove or disprove, is that Wenceslaus was a son of the last Holy Roman Emperor. Mary Eva may have been born in Bohemia. I believe that at one time they lived in Rudenau, Bavaria, Germany and then moved to Latrobe, PA. I believe that Mary Eva and her family were living in the St Louis area. They would be related to the Buchanan family from El Paso, Texas. I am hoping to find information about Mary Eva's family, and have lots of information about Joseph Bower's family that I am happy to share.

Thomas George Moody Bower was my Great-great-great Grandfather, my Great-great Grandmother was his daughter Mary Bower. I have a copy of a newspaper article showing the Bower brothers in front of the fire engine. I am updating my Bailey tree and would like to know which Bower is their father. It was sent to me by Brian Charles from Mattersey and he has written on the back that they are the sons of Fred Bower and Mary Ann Curzon but I don't have her in my tree as yet and not sure which Fred Bower she belongs to!

(1756. Veronica Bauer rests here in God. She lived in matrimony with Christian Bauer for nearly 32 years. They produced 13 children together. She died on the 22nd of October 1796, so that she had reached the age of approximately...)

Her husband, Christian Bauer's tombstone reads:
"1791. Hier ruhet Christian Bauer. Er ist gebohren in der Schwitz 1734 den 5 December, hat in Ehstand gelebt mit Veronica Spicklerin 33 Jahr und mit ihr erzeugt 13 Kinder und er ist gestorben im Jahr 1790 den 18 January. Brachte sein Alter auf 55 Jahr 1 Monad und 13 Dage"

(1791. Here rests Christian Bauer. He was born in Switzerland the 5th of December 1734, lived in matrimony with Veronica Spickler for 33 years and produced 13 children with her, and he died the 18th of January 1790. He reached the age of 55 years 1 month and 13 days)

I believe Christian and Veronica were born in Switzerland, not Germany. The cemetery is called Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland.

He was my mother in law's grandfather. Not much information on him. Anything before his service in the war I cant find.
