Mildred L. Bowers Stone 1921-2012 Ohio

: Mildred L. Bowers Stone, age 91, of Cardington, Ohio passed away on Sunday morning, April 1, 2012, at the Morrow Manor Nursing Center, surrounded by her loving family, following an extended illness.

On January 3, 1921, Mildred was born in Union County, Ohio, one of three daughters of the late Arthur and Marie (Smith) Bowers.
She grew up in Richwood, Ohio always roller skating to get from here to there, and learning to drive by the time she was 11.

Leaving school early to get married and start a family, Mildred lost her first husband, Donald E. Bowers, in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II on January 21, 1945. Together they had one daughter, Norma, and one son, Donald.

In 1946, Mildred moved to a farm in Morrow County, Ohio, marrying Bruce Jordan, with whom she had seven children: three sons and four daughters. He too preceded her in death.

Always hard at work, Mildred some how made time to raise her children, work in a factory, and help on the family farm. She had worked as a coil winder at North Electric in Mount Gilead and Galion, Ohio and worked as a supervisor at Essex Wire in Lexington, OH.
Lastly, she worked at Glass Garden Green House for over 20 years, retiring when she was 88 because of her health.

Mildred was a member of the Stiving Road Free Will Baptist Church in Mansfield. Recently though, she had been attending the Chesterville United Methodist Church, where she had been active with the United Methodist Women.

Having a green thumb, Mildred always kept a vegetable garden the size of a truck patch, and canning her crop every year.

With over 120 in her immediate family, Mildred almost always could be found with needle and thread, crocheting quilts, hats, scarves, sweaters and anything else she thought her family needed. She always wanted to make sure to make something special for everyone in her family, even making 9 quilts one year, one for each of her children.

Cherishing every moment spent with her family, Mildred especially enjoyed sharing the holidays with them. Every year she looked forward to their special Christmas gatherings, making cookies for everyone the day before Christmas and even having to rent a lodge on Christmas day because her family is much too big for just a house.
They also cherished nearly every Sunday together, when she would cook make them a special Sunday dinner.

With a love for the outdoors, Mildred even enjoyed fishing at the pond at her home with her husband and grandchildren.

Getting a third chance at love, Mildred married Raymond E. Stone, on June 28, 1963. Together they lovingly shared over 40 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on October 2, 2003.

She will be dearly missed by her seven children, Norma (Wilbert) Oler of Columbus, Ohio, Anna (Benton) Mahan of Cardington, Emma (Butch) Chipps of Chesterville, Ohio, Bruce "Pete" (Judy) Jordan of Cardington, Robin (David) Lester of Edison, Ohio, Vern (Tanya) Jordan of Marengo, Ohio, and Vicki (Jeff) Sargent of Fredericktown, OH; two daughters-in-law: Judith Bowers of Cardington, and Deborah Jordan of Chesterville; grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husbands and parents, Mildred was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Bowers and Alfred Jordan; three grandchildren, Vern Jordan, Jodi and Julie Chipps; and two sisters, Helen Poling and Vera LaFever;

Her family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.
Services celebrating her life will also be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Jeannie Winters officiating.
Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesterville United Methodist Women and the Morrow Manor Nursing Center, c/o Activity Fund, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.

Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead is honored to have been chosen to serve Mildred's family, and your private condolences may be expressed may be expressed to them by visiting www.snyderfuneralhomes.com

If your Green Bowers was the one married to Sarah Cooper, you have DNA proof through Howard Bowers connecting your Green to Giles Bowers of Isle of Wight, VA, through Giles's son, Benjamin. You may not find documentation, but DNA is considered a definitive link between Giles and his son Benjamin and grandson Green. One of the researchers in this family, Sue Bowers, suspects Giles of IOW came to Maryland with his brother, who I think was named Robert. As far as I know, no one has found Giles's parents.

I used to think my Giles Bowers, b ca 1806 NC, was related to this line. My family and related clans were in the same places as Giles of IOW and we both shared Christian names, but DNA testing disproved this theory. We're unrelated. Yet, I think it's safe to say that you're a descendant of Giles of IOW.

Good luck, Rodney

Do you know of any siblings of Jacob? He had all this land in Allen Co and Auglaize Co OH. There were several other Bower/Bowers in Allen Co. at this time & also born in PA. Are you a member of Ancestry.com.?

Re: Elijah D. Bowers - Will you send me your E mail address as I have much more information to send. There were TWO Elijah Bowers living in Allen Co at the same time!! Both were about the same age, both were in the Civil war and each had 5 children with same names. The one you have listed as Jacob's son lived in Amanda Twp., Spencerville, Allen Co..My Elijah D Bowers lived in Jackson Twp. Allen Co and on the 40 acres tract of land EXACTLY described in Jacob Bower's will. He was living on this land in 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and he died there on May 24, 1889. He was buried in Lafayette Cemetery, only a few miles from this property. I believe my Elijah is the son of Jacob Bower!!!! I have information on both Elijah Bowers. The siblings that came to OHIO lived only miles from my Elijah. Thank you for sending the e mail. Mary

No, I don't have any photo of Elijah, or his siblings. I wish I did. I have Elijah as the oldest of 11 children for Jacob & Elizabeth Bowers. Daniel, Elijah's brother is my line.

Here is the information I have on our Elijah Bowers.. Is this what you have?

Elijah b: abt 1823 in Stark Co.
There were 2 Elijah Bowers living in Allen co OH at the same time, both were in the Civil War, both died in the same year, five of each of their children were named the same, Both Elijahs married in Allen Co OH within two years of each other. One lived in Spencerville and the other in Jackson twp. near Lafayette. Are you sure you have the right Elijah listed as Jacob and Elizabeth's son???? Do you have any other information about Elijah? I ask because my gr gr grandfather, Elijah D. Bowers, had lived on the 40 acres exactly (word for word) as described in Jacob Bower's will. I have a copy of the deed. The name on the record at Allen CO court house before Elijah Bowers is JACOB BOWER. My Elijah Bowers lived on this tract of land and died there in 1889. He, also, named his children Jacob, Elizabeth, John, William and Mary. In Jacob's will it states that Elijah was living on this 40 acres at the time of his will. My Elijah is listed in census since 1840. I have a old map of the area showing Elijah living there. Do you have a picture of Elijah? Please respond soon as I will be in Allen Co soon and can do some more research there. Thank you in advance for your help.

The Hancock County (MS) Historical Society has a terrific webpage that lists Albin Bowers married Mary Glover 1887 (Original record: Book E, Page 225). They also list "Abin Bowers" in Pearlington Cemetery (b. 1/10/1862, d. 12/26/1892, husband of Mary Glover).
In the cemetery index, there is also an "Albert B. Bowers" (b. 1888, d.1917) two plots over from Abin Bowers. This doesn't appear to match the dates you listed previously, but perhaps this is a relative or a clue to the info you are searching for??
Good luck!

Re: John {Johannes} & Susannah Bower {Bauer} of Frederick Co., MD and Stark Co., OH

I have great news! A cousin, Greg Bowers, solved my brick wall mystery ancestor. It looks like Johannes Bauer {John Bowers} was the son of Christian Bauer {Bower} and Veronica Spickler {Spicker}.

The next mysteries, of course, are the Swiss parents of Christian and Veronica. Anyone out there able to identify Christian and Veronica’s parents?

Here’s a brief summary of what Greg discovered:

Christian Bauer {Bower}, was a miller by trade,
born: 5 December 1734 in Switzerland and
died: 18 January 1790 near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland at 55 years 1 month and 13 days old.

About 1767, Christian Bauer married Veronica Spickler.

Veronica Spickler {Spicker} was
born: 22 April 1742 in Switzerland and
died: 22 October 1796 near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland at 54 years old.

Christian and Veronica Bauer {Bower} were both buried in the Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery, formerly Bower’s Church Cemetery, near Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland.

Christian and Veronica Bauer’s springhouse at 1322 Bachman Valley Road, Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland has been designated by the Maryland Historical Trust as a state historical site. It stands today, February 2012.

Children of Christian and Veronica Spickler Bauer {Bower} have been documented as follows:

1) Barbara Bauer may have been born around 1768. According to Christian’s will, Barbara had a daughter, Elizabeth {Elizabet}. According to the A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, Christian’s daughter, Barbara Bower married Martin Easterday of Frederick County in 1783. However, online researchers suggest that the Barbara Bauer who married Martin Easterday was in fact the daughter of Conrad Bauer and Maria Eva {last name unknown.} There was an Elizabeth Bauer buried in the cemetery next to Christian and Veronica Spickler Bauer’s tombstones who was born 7 June 1788 and died less than 2 years old on 2 February 1790.

2) Christian Bowers may have been born around 1769. Christian married Salome Yingling (Jüngling, Jungling, Yuengling) on 6 April 1790 in the Reformed and Lutheran Church, Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland. Ambrose Bower of A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families suggests that Martin Easterday married Salome after the death of her husband, Christian.

Christian and Salome Yingling Bauer’s children were Johannes {John} who married Christina Swickard, Christian, Susana, Salome, and David who married a woman whose last name was Harmon.

3) Johannes Bauer (John Bower) and Susanna {last name unknown}. See previous post for their family story.

4) Matthias Bower was born 13 January 1774 in Baltimore County, Maryland and died 2 May 1849, Plain Twp, Stark County, Ohio at 75 years old. He is buried in Warstler, Stark County, Ohio. On 5 December 1806 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, Mathias married Catherine Houck {Hauck, Hawk}. Catherine Houck was born 9 January 1775, Baltimore County, Maryland and died 14 August 1849, Plain Twp, Stark County, Ohio at 74 years old, 3 months after her husband died.

Mathias and Catharine Houck Bower’s children were Salome who married John W. Lautzenhiser {Loutzenheiser}, John, Jacob, Harriet who married Daniel Swihart, William who married Sarah Jane Grogg, Susan, Sarah who married Jacob Koontz, Eliza who married John Kimmel, Rachel who married Christian Anderson Zents {Sentz}, David who first married Elizabeth Golden and then Catherine Dean, and Anna who married Abraham Daniel Grogg.

5) Catherine (Caty) Bowers married Jacob Houck. Jacob may have been the brother of Catherine Houck who married Johannes’ brother, Matthias Bower.

6) Jacob Bowers married Elizabeth {last name unknown.} They had most of their children in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. Jacob and Elizabeth’s children were Jacob, Anne, George, Ester, Jacob, Margaret, Adam, Margaret and Mary Jane Bowers.

7) According to A Directory of the Bower-Swickard Families, it is suggested that Barnhart Bower was the son of Christian Bower. Online researchers disagree with this book and state Barnhart Bower was the son of Conrad Bower and Marie Eva {last name unknown,} just like the Barbara Bower who married Martin Easterday.
Re: Earle S. Bowers Candy Co.

My mother Margaret Bower (no known relation) worked in the factory that was located on Lehigh Avenue and I belive Palethorpe Street. One of the best rteats I enjoyed as a teenager was the Peanut Brittle that she would bring home for me. I remember that it came in a small (too small I always thought) metal can which was brown and gold (I may still have one of the cans which my father used to store nuts and bolts on his workbench). Before I got interetsed in geneology and understood the concepts and learned of the digestive difficulties of peanuts, I had always hoped that Earle and I were related, he would leave me the candy company in his will and I would die a happy man, eating peanut brittle. We always had some around the house, it was my favorite. They also produced a line of mints which were little round white balls with red streaks running through them. Ate myself sick on them one Christmas. That can was Red and green on silver. It was not a very big factory, only three stories high, brownish brick and a small city block wide and deep. The front entrance was a set of high concrete steps and being a stident at Edison High School just a few blcoks away, where I would sometime sit on Fridays and wait until Mom came out. The building is still there (Google maps, street view), now called The Prevention Point and at one time was The Flame Supply Company. Although the building has been renovated on the first floor, the upper floors remain virtually the same although evidently used for offices or perhaps living areas. Wish I could tell you more about the company but I was never allowed inside the building except they ahd a small retail outlet where I could buy additional candies. The employees were almost exclusively unskilled neighborhood women working to help support their familes. The surrounding neighborhood has changed since the late 50's. It was one blcok from Fairhiull Square, adjacent to the famous St Christopher's Children's Hospital (which is now converted to a living facilty by the looks of the picture.) I am sorry I cant tell you more about the company itself, but I will say it is the measure of all the peanut brittle I eat and I have not found but one which could compate in terms of taste. Hope this helps a little.

Searching for David Bowers and Mary Ann (Odineal) Bowers. Married October 1875 in Webster County, Missouri. Had four children, Della, Florence, Elizabeth and David. Moved to the Grayson/Fannin County Texas area before 1897. Mary Ann died in 1911. Della died in 1962 and the younger David also called "Simmie" died in 1967. I have little information about Florence and Elizabeth other than they called Elizabeth "Mimmie." David and Mary Ann are my 2nd great grandparents on my mother's side. Any information/correspondence about this family would be very much appreciated.
He was a lawyer, mayor of Madison, Ms. prior to the War, soldier, and then returned to MS. to practise law with B.L. Posey.

Reason Bowers & others is listed in Stewart Co deeds 1843 giving power of attorney to Thomas Payne to represent him in the portion of John Gardner's estate due him as heir of Celia Gardner married to Griswold Lattimore.

Am trying to figure out who he might have married.

Also in the 1880 Census of Stewart Co, there is a mother-in-law, Elizabeth Bowers, living with Joel Boyd and probably her daughter, Sally, with a stepdaughter, Celia. I thought these two items might be connected.

I have updated some information on my pedigree...we lost my grandfather last spring. I do know about the name change...I beleive the orginal spelling meant farmer, which up to and including my grandfather, the bowers were farmers or did some sorta agricultural work. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Walter,

Hopefully, you are still out there. I stumbled over this message today. The interesting thing about your message is that the story you relate is the exact story I have heard all my life. But I am not a descendent of the NC clan. I had always heard growing up that there were 3 brothers that came here from Germany. They were seperated somehow upon arrival. My family is from Ohio, so possibly that brother you wrote about. Possibly, I may have some information to help you, as we have a pretty thorough family tree completed on the Bowers. One thing that may help you (assuming it is the same family) that you may or may not be aware of is that the original spelling of the name was Bauer.

Hope that is helpful in someway to you!

I have a 1943 family Bible that appears to have belonged to Nettie's son, Fred Albert Pinner. It has a marriage listed to Lillie Brewer in 1920. Please contact me so I can send you a copy of the family page to see if perhaps this is part of your family's history.
