I am the great-great-great grandson of William and Matilda Bowie. I have spent the last 25 years documenting my great great grandfather Nathaniel Bowie's life in Washington Dc.

Nathaniel's eldest son William A. Bowie along with John Whitelaw Lewis were the co-founders of the original Industrial Savings Bank in Washington Dc.

Another son Egbert Jerome Bowie AKA "Black Bowie" was the 1st business manager of Duke Ellington

James Louis Bacon

That is an interesting website that you have created Susan. I have been doing Bowie genealogy for 25+ years and some of your information is new to me. I do like the details about people's lives. Some of lives ironies and adventures can be quite intriguing. You may already know this but Magruder's Landing still exists at http://g.co/maps/eb942. That section of Maryland has had so much development that it is amazing to me that some of these backwaters (pardon the pun) still exist.
The name is new to me so I am not certain if we are related to her. My Bowie group came out of Charles County MD and moved down the VA coast. My ggf went west to the VA Mountains, his brother went west into Elizabethon, TN. I would suggest you contact Wanda Simmons of the Charles county MD study group. While Everette Bowie is the knower of all things Bowie, Wanda is the expert on the MD Bowies. Her email is: cbs196395@yahoo.com. She might help you narrow down the particular family. If you would like Everette's email as well, i can provide you with that also.
MY ggf was Ellis Watson Bowie, his father was William Jackson Bowie whose father was Watson Bowie, a well known member of Mosby's Raiders during the Civil War in the States. I could go further back than that, but if your letter is written 1907, this would more than likely cover her contemporaries.
Does this help any? Hope so,
Susan

Hello,

My name is Ken Boyce. I have been researching the family of John Boyce (b:1818, Butler County, PA. I have reasonably good reason to believe he had a couple of uncle's living in very close proximity in Allegheny County, PA, both of whom were born in Maryland (1850 census record). The assumed uncle's names are Elijah and George.

I also have good reason to believe that John (b: before 1794) was the name of John Boyce's father. I do not have absolute proof of the elder John's birthplace but logic suggests it would have been in the same place as his likely brothers Elijah and George.

Additionally, the names James and William are very much present within the extended family living in the Butler/Allegheny Counties area

While my evidence is very thin, I am suspicious the John, George and Elijah Boyce families migrated from Washington County, PA as a result of the Whiskey Rebellion. Elijah was a prominent operator of a whiskey still in northern Allegheny County starting in the early 1800's and I have found a family connection to Washington County (just south of Pittsburgh).

I recognize this is a bit of a long shot but the conicidence of the three given names being in common between the two searches for Boyce clans is something I could not pass up without at least asking you for further information about the subsequent migration of the Boyce clan you have found. Any information you may have about Boyce families that migrated to Washington, Allegheny or Butler Counties in western PA would be much appreciated.

I have a public tree on Ancestry.com titled "Boyce Family Tree".

She and my dad used to correspond, but he has fallen out of doing so the last few years.
We are preparing for a Bowie "gathering" next month and I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row regarding our part of the Bowie family. We are considered the "lost Bowies". Don't really know what that means beside our group was not as prolific (if you get my meaning) as others. Consequently, I am trying to pull together as much as I can re our side of the family. My dad was the baby in his family and he has little knowledge, so I am trying to use the internet and other means to supplement. But if you have some info I would love to read it. Nancy Bowie married into the Rosamond generation who was Thomas Neuton Rosamond. They in turn had my grandfather William Richard Rosamond and well you know the rest of the story. I have some paperwork given to me by my cousin Gwen Rosamond Forrester who has been researching for many years on the Bowie/Rosamond generation.
Cheryl,
Thanks for the picture. There are quite a few Bowie's buried in that graveyard. I did not see that monument when we were there in October of 2000. At that time there was a professional genealogist who worked out of the old Children's Hospital next door to the Church. He showed us around the graveyard and said that Alexander Bowie was a prominent architect in Stirling. He gave us the address of a bank building the he designed. See http://gallery.me.com/petemcl#100597

Pete McLallen
Northville, Michigan

But you could be correct Everette as Aliquippa is not that far from Uniontown where Dr. John Bowie's family settled after his death. Laurie Ann Bieber is the expert on that branch of the family.

Amazing to be so close yet unrelated. There are DNA tests for Littlefield's from Maine and I think North Carolina that share markers so while they can't find the link, they should be related somehow. Links across the seaboard but not a county over.

Ramon, you did not give enough information to identify your parents. I did not find them in my files. I will put a link below for your use. We need to know the full name of your father, where he was born, when he was born, who was his wife, her maiden name (this is very important-married names only serve to confuse), where she was born, and who were the parents of both. It is so common to find the same names cropping up all over the place, making it difficult to know which person we need to deal with. Dates other than the "70's" would be an immense help. I keep a genealogy research list to which I send research related mail. I will send this on to the list (over 100 names) and see if anyone salutes. I have an idea you are from the Prince Georges County, Maryland line. Mine is Charles County, which is adjacent to PG County. They are apparently not related. We did a DNA test with me providing a sample for the Charles County line, Oden Bowie gave one for the Prince Georges line, and Bob Bowie in Maine did one for the New England line. No matches! Incidentally, Oden Bowie is the 95 year old (may be 96 by now) grandson of former & late Governor Oden Bowie of Maryland.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/o/w/Everette-W-...
(My home page)

Everette Bowie
Yes, this John Boy married the widow(Jennet or Jane) of John Knight. They had six children all mentioned in her will. One of these was Abraham who is the ancestor of most of the Charles County Bowies. John's father was also named John and I believe he was the original immigrant.

Wayne Bowie

Boy, John, m. by 11 Oct 1698, Jennet, relict and admx of John Knight of CH Co. (INAC 18:790). Jennet would be one in the same as Jane. From what I could find she and John Knight had three children together but I don't know what became of them.

John Boyce (Boy)

The Charles County Md. Bowies have traced their ancestry back to John Boy/Jane Taylor. I think we can add one more generation and get to the original immigrant. John Boy's father was John Boyce(still another spelling); his wife was Eleanor Munn. They had three children: John(husband of Jane Taylor-1676), William and James both born in the early 1680's. John Boyce immigrated in 1658 to Maryland and is listed in the land records as buying Ashbrook's Rest from Thomas Ashbrook. This property adjoins Senah's Delight later acquired by Oswell Bowie and his son Abraham. He is also mentioned in the sale of Bastable and The Discovery. These are also in close proximity to the above mentioned properties.

Wayne Bowie

I noticed that you make trips to Scotland, according to your prior posts. That's so marvelous. Do you go with a group, or do you escort a group? Also, if you prefer, you can contact me at lesainman@hotmail.com Do you have a published family tree that I can see, so that I can understand where you fit into the Bowie family? I'm not sure I told you about my Bowie's. I have a webpage at tribalpages concerning my Reason Bowie of the Civil War. It is a work in progress that needs updating with other family members. I also have a family tree uploaded to familytreeDNA, concerning the Bowie's only.

Pete, Thank you very much. I've been waiting for years to run into someone like you with vast knowledge of the Bowie's in Maryland. As for William Bowie in Frederick County, VA: in the 1810 Frederick, VA census, Wm Bowie is living "next to" Nathaniel Burwell, Sr. I believe William was doing carpentry work for Nathaniel. William Bowie was a carpenter, as was his son, William Bowie, b. 1791, VA. I have William's Revolutionary War pension, documenting his migration from AA County, MD to VA and then to KY. I also have his daughter's biographic material in which she states that the family lived near Millwood, VA. I think I've been careful to put pieces together for my William Bowie, born 1764. I wonder how you fit into the Bowie family. And YES, I'd absolutely love to compare the results of Oden Bowie! As soon as we can arrange that. Please tell me how. Our test was done through familytreeDNA. I would love to talk to you more about the skirmish at West River and the burning of Stephen Steward's Shipyard. Wm. Bowie gives a detailed description of it, as only a witness could. Wm. always claimed to be of Anne Arundel County. I find it interesting that none of the Prince George's County Bowie's are found in Anne Arundel during those colonial years. Since William was a carpenter, I'm only extrapolating that John Bowie may have been his father, and may also have been a shipbuilder. The other John Bowie at the time, was Rev. John Bowie, who in 1776 was in Worcester County, MD, and within the year took the pastorate at St. Ann's. It could be the same John Bowie, but it would take more research. The John Bowie living near Stephen Steward's shipyard, was living in St. Jame's Parish, which was also part of Herring Creek Hundred, when in 1783 the tax list shows an "Else Bowie" living there. Perhaps her husband, John, had died. I know that many of these comments are circumstantial. I have contacted the Stephen Steward Shipyard organization to ask if they found any account books. But none have been found, to date of my writing. Actually, one thing I did find today, which was quite interesting, is that there were wealthy Bennett families in Colonial Anne Arundel. Richard Bennett, being the immigrant from England. It's a start. I would like to compare results for Oden Bowie, since this was the most important reason for us to do the test. I couldn't find a Bowie Project, per se at familytreeDNA. Again, if you could lead me through the process, it would be most exciting. Thanks so much, Pete, for all of your valuable information and insights! my email is lesainman@hotmail.com

I'm having a little trouble with this. I only find one reference to this, the same one you found, but I can find no mention of a 122nd Virginia Infantry being involved in the Battle of New Orleans. I wonder where Gardere Francis Moore got that information? The 122 Virginia Militia was disbanded in 1783 after most of the regiment was killed or captured by the British at Charleston. I don't see any record of their reactivation until 1861, the Civil War. I also can't find a Lt. James Ship or a Fort Holly listed anywhere. All of these are part of Moore's footnote on "Rezin Pleasants Bowie". As for a William Bowie on the Frederick Co. tax records as noted in my previous post that was a common name.

So G. F. Moore's footnote is a mystery to me. If you find out any more details please let me know. Maybe someone reading this can shed more light on these details?

J. I. "Pete" McLallen
Northville, MI

You stated that you have "seen the Mary Bennett marriage to William Duckett Bowie". That is a new one for me. William Duckett Bowie b.1803 married in 1823 Eliza Mary Oden and then after her death in 1849 he married in 1854 her step-sister Mary Oden (an interesting story in itself as their father, Benjamin Oden, had done the same thing after the death of his first wife, Rachel West he married her sister Harriet West). Col. Bowie was active in the war of 1812 and his son with Eliza, Oden, became the Governor of Maryland in 1868. So I'm guessing that you may have found another William Duckett Bowie?

As for Stephen Seward's shipyard it was pretty famous (see the U.S. Naval Institute website at http://www.usni.org/magazines/navalhistory/2008-04/where-nav...). As there were many Bowie plantations in the area and almost all the families were involved in various pre-Revolution governments in Maryland and/or the local militias. There were quite a few that were involved in skirmishes during the Revolution and the War of 1812. Particularly the latter when the British fleet was hotly engaged by flotillas of gunboats built on the multitude of creeks and inlets around Chesapeake Bay. I'm not sure which John Bowie you have seen but there was a John Bowie that was a ship captain that was involved in the Revolution.

We quite frequently get Bowies from Frederick Co., Maryland confused with Bowies with the same name from Frederick Co., Virginia. I think the last discussion we had on this board was regarding several William Bowies that served in various Confederate units during the Civil War. So although Rezin P. Bowie is an unusual name we have to be cautious that they are not different people. You might want to check the DAR website (http://www.dar.org/) as their records are relatively easy to search. I do have a reference (http://geociti.es/BourbonStreet/8781/) that shows that Rezin P. Bowie Jr. served in the war of 1812 but since his father moved to Louisiana in 1802 it may be more likely that was the Battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1815.

As for William Bowie being an illegitimate son I think that is only one of many, many possibilities as regards the reason for the results of the yDNA test. We also might want to compare those results to the yDNA test that was run recently on Oden Bowie, grandson of the aforementioned governor and one of the last living Prince George's Co. male Bowies. Let me know if you want to do that.

Good luck in your research.

J. I. "Pete" McLallen
Northville, MI

Pete, I got out my records. There is a Rezin Bowie listed in Frederick COunty, VA in the year 1814 only. Also, it's the General Society of the War of 1812, that lists Rezin Bowie's military record in the 122 Rgt. of the VA Militia. This record is attached to Rezin P. Bowie, brother of James Bowie of Alamo fame. Again, this 122 Reg. was recruited from Frederick County, VA and it states that he served in the year 1815. My William Bowie lived in Frederick County, VA from at least 1803 until 1819, according to VA tax records. I just wanted to pin down those dates.
