Clay County, KY - Mary Jane Bowling, and the 2 Mahala Bowling's are THREE different women

This is being written to prove to other researchers who care to have accurate information in their tree that:

1. Mary Jane Bowling, the mistress of Jesse Radford and wife of Solomon Hensley

2. Mahala Bowling, wife of George Hensley

3. Mahala Boling, wife of Simon Pfaff

Are THREE, DISTINCT, DIFFERENT individuals. Dozens and dozens of family trees here on Ancestry.com and other places online have combined these three people’s information at will, some even forming the conclusion that all 3 were the same people, though most confuse number’s 1 and 2, or number’s 2 and 3. All over the internet and on Ancestry, researchers have listed Jesse Radford’s mistress as Mary Jane “Mahala” Bowling, but with a little bit of research, one can find that Mary Jane’s name was never Mahala, and though they both married Hensley men, they were still not the same person.

The number 1 best piece of evidence differentiating these 3 women is the 1880 Census, where all 3 appear in different households.

1. MARY JANE BOWLING – Was the daughter of JAMES BOWLING and DELILAH HOLLAND. She was born 15 Mar 1854 in Clay County (Source: Kentucky Birth Records, 1852-1910 – Ancestry.com). She is found in the 1860 Census in her parents’ household in Clay County, Kentucky. She is found in the 1870 Census in the household of her aunt and uncle, Jesse and Grace Holland Radford in Precinct 4, Clay County, Kentucky. It is then she began having children with Jesse as his mistress; she had at least 6 that we know of. In 1880, while apparently pregnant with another child of Jesse’s (Mahala), she married a Solomon Hensley, a cousin of the Holland family. She is found in the 1880 Census in Leslie County, Kentucky, just 2 households from Jesse and Grace, with Solomon and a daughter she had with Jesse, Elizabeth. 2 months prior to the 1880 Census, she’d given birth to Mahala, another child with Jesse. And apparently their affair did not end even though she married, as she gave birth to Clark Levy in 1881. No children between Mary Jane and Solomon have been identified or found. Supposedly, Mary Jane moved to Arkansas with the Radford’s and Holland’s, and died there around 1888. As best as we can tell, Clark was her last child with Jesse. (We assume he was Jesse’s and not Hensley’s because he went by the last name Radford; his death record lists his parents as Jesse Radford and Mary Boland, which is one of the many misspellings of Bowling that are out there.)

2. MAHALA BOWLING – Was the daughter of ADDISON [Adam] BOWLING and ELIZA BENGE. She was born about 1858, four years after Mary Jane. She is found in the 1860 Census in the household of her parents in Clay County, Kentucky. She is found in her parents’ household again in 1870 in Precinct 2, Clay County, Kentucky. She married George Hensley on 27 Mar 1877 in Clay County, Kentucky (Source: Kentucky Marriages, 1785-1979 – FamilySearch.org). Her name appears on her son Alfred’s birth record on 29 Mar 1878 in Clay County as “Mahaly Bowlin” (Source: Kentucky Birth Records, 1852-1910 – Ancestry.com). George must have died by 1880, because in the 1880 Census she is still in her parents’ household in Pigeon Roost, Clay County, Kentucky, without George, but with Alfred and another son, Newton. Newton is shown to be 4 months old. This is important, because should anyone continue to insist that Mahala and Mary Jane were the same person, they could ask themselves how the same woman could have Newton Bowling and Mahala Bowling with 2 different father’s only 2 months apart. Clearly, this is not possible, so clearly, these are 2 different women.

3. MAHALA BOWLING – Was the daughter of JOHN BOWLING and ORAH ASHER. She was born in September of 1870, at least 11 years after the birth of the previously discussed Mahala Bowling (Source: 1900 Census). She is found in the 1880 Census in a household with her siblings, with her sister Lucinda Bowling as the head of the household. Despite the 10 year age difference between she and the previously mentioned Mahala Bowling, many researchers contend that the other Mahala married Simon Pfaff, but it was this Mahala who married Simon Pfaff, as evidenced by the clear significant difference in their ages.

So please, use this information as a guide. Do not apply Mary Jane’s and Mahala’s information to one another, and do not apply Mahala wife of Simon Pfaff’s information to Mahala wife of George Hensley’s information. If anyone would like to argue any of these points, please feel free to contact me, but I’m quite certain this information is accurate. Thank you.

Written by Nathan Vaughan Marks on 18 May 2012

I understand there are also connections to Pocohantas as well. I would be interested in seeing your history and see how it connects to mine.
Thanks
JoEtta

There were 2 Marion Bowlings.
The first was George Marion Bowling and he married Sallie Duckworth in 1888. All I know of is one son Henry Eugene Bowling. I'm not sure but I believe she died sometime over the next decade because he then married Mattie Lou Elrod in 1897. In the 1919 census Henry Eugene is listed living with his grandmother Harriett Francis Bodenhamer Ballard. George Marion died in 1906.

With Mattie Lou he had another son named Marion DeWitt. Marion aka (Shorty) is the one that married Ellie Mae Caldwell.

Shorty is my grandmothers father.

Hello,

My maiden name is Bowling. My Dad is Leo W. Bowling, his father was Winfield Lee Bowling (B 10-24-1916 D 6-24-1943), who went by Lee Bowling he passed away when my grandmother (Thelma Eva Hall) was pregnant w/my Dad (Leo B 2-1-1944). My grandmother has since passed. I have not been able to find a marriage cert for them and I've seen other trees that show Lee as having been married twice (he died at 26). I have not been able to confirm this. I have Frank Ferris Bowling (B 10-2-1892 D 6-3-195)as Lee's Dad and then George Bowling (B 1862 D 1893) as Franks Dad. I have others before that but I do not know if any of it is correct. Can anyone help me sort some of this out? Thank you very much.
Cindy Carlin (Bowling)

My greatgrandmother was the oldest child (of six children, I think) of Jason Walker Bowling and Kittie Bowling Bowling, and who lived to be 101 in very good health and extremely sharp mind. She was Margaret Bowling Garrison, born in 1873, Foggertown, in Clay County, Kentucky, and died 1974. Lived until her last three days at her own home. We have her teacher's certificate (1892) which was on display for a short period this Christmas season at the Old Governor's Mansion in Frankfort, Kentucky. My family also has a beautiful walking stick that was made for her grandmother (this would be my greatgreatgreatgrandmother), Isabel Cornett. My greatgrandmother had one child, Robert Franklin Bowling, my grandfather. My mother, Lucille Bowling Carloftis, is his daughter. My greatgrandmother's brothers and sisters were Amanda Young Bowling Bailey (whom I knew and who lived next door to my greatgrandmother); a brother, Albert (everyone says I look almost exactly like him - my greatgrandmother often called me by his name); a brother, Morgan, a sister, Lucy (I think she was the sister who had moved to Kansas probably around 1900 or so)and the others I can't remember at this particular time.

I am seeking information on the parents of Aury Andrew Bowling of Alabama. His father was Walter A. Bowling, but I have been unable to find the mother's name anywhere. It is believed that she died in childbirth with Aury. There is some information on both Walter and Aury, but Aury's mom's name remains a mystery. Aury was born around 1892/1893. I have found a marriage certificate for a W.A. Bowling and Sarah Sizemore, but I am not sure this is the correct couple.
Family lore has it that Walter was married several times, so this compounds my research problems. Please share if you have information.

My husband is Walter A. Bowling's great-grandson. I have been doing a good bit of research on the family and will be glad to share anything I have found with you. I have really had difficulty researching Walter, though, having come up against brick walls every way I've turned. Please share if you have any information on him. I am particularly interested in finding out who is the mother of his son Aury Andrew Bowling, my husband's grandfather. We have heard that Walter was married several times. I have found one possibility in a Sarah Sizemore, but I cannot prove that she is Aury Andrew's mom.

Thanks,

Anita Bowling

We are very curious what must've happened to them for Dan to be a "labourer" for this Maffitt family listed as their family. I haven't found any connections to the Maffitt's except for this census!

According to what I've seen, Marvel Bowling was the son of Capt. James Bolling and either his wife ? Stone or Ruth Carter. He had a brother Gabriel Bowling and a brother James Bowling. This is unverified, merely what I've seen in an old family tree and on various message boards.

Also, Captain James Bolling was perhaps the youngest son of Major James Bolling, II and his wife Elizabeth Blair of "Cobbs". The Bollings were a VERY old Virginia family and Capt. James was the great great grandson of Pocahontas.
The ancestry of Major James Bolling, II and his wife Elizabeth Blair have been well established and are easily found in genealogy libraries and on message boards.

There is, in fact, some controversy about the children of Major James, II. It is unclear to historians whether these 21 children were all his or were some perhaps adopted from a local orphanage.

My old family tree says that Capt. James argued with his father and that caused him to leave home and change his name to Bowling. I don't know and have not seen any supporting documentation.

All that I have been able to find out definitely was that Capt. James was in Amhearst, VA when he married and sired his sons Marvel & Gabriel (and perhaps James, jr.)
