Thanks again. Not even the witnesses were Bowns and the only place name mentioned is Change Islands where they were married. Bowns occur at several other locations in Nfld so I will see if I can find any connections there. I will also follow up at the sites you suggest. Beware of Pickford being confused with similar names (Bickford, Peckford etc)
Thanks again
Is your marriage record for Ann giving any clues, such as names or places of ANY Bowns?
As far as researching in Nova Scotia is concerned, the Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics at https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com is your best starting point, if you can find your Bowns, good. If you find others, check the individual records anyway for birthplace of any Bown named. Early marriage bonds are not so helpful, but you ever know what may turn up. I have found the Nova Scotia Genweb helpful as well, but that is spotty. I am presently researching in Nova Scotia materials on other families and will watch for Bown entries for you. I am sure I have seen some.
Curiously, my Somerset Bowns have a connection with Pickfords in Littleton that I have not figured out.

Hi
Thanks for this. I will follow the clues but I don’t expect it to be easy. Ann is the only Bown in my family and although I have a full(ish) history of her husband Joseph (my g-g-grandfather) and his line back to Dorset, I’ve never found anything definitive about Ann. Somerset or Dorset are likely origins as most of the English migrants to Newfoundland hailed from those counties – the Peckfords were mostly from Dorset and particularly from Wimborne. Joseph and Ann married in Change Islands and she may have been a first, second or even third generation Newfoundlander. The Bown name still survives in Change Islands but those I contacted did not know of a connection with Ann. Given the link with Nova Scotia I wonder if the family arrived in Newfoundland from there. Any advice on sources for NS would be welcome. Thanks again for responding.
I have been researching a Bown line in Somerset and found a useful tool: FreeReg (http://www.freereg.org.uk). A search of baptisms of Ann Bown born in 1832 + or - 2 years in Somerset or Dorset, found one. She may or may not be yours; that would be quite a task to work out. Are there other Bowns in your area of research? Have you any clues as to where they came from? I'd be checking that out using whatever tools I could find: other Cape Breton Bown family histories and NS Historical Vital Statistics, learning all you can about the couple in question. If possible, I'd also check the records of the place of origin of your Peckford line for Bown records.
My line seems to first show up in Somerton, then spread to nearby locations and Bristol before going to Ontario. The only Ann was too early to be yours, but there are other Somerton Bowns who appear connected, but I have not yet learned how. Keep trying. Your breakthrough may be soon. And best wishes in getting there.
Hi
I have just found an old posting of yours and am hoping this message will reach you.

I’m trying to trace my great-great grandmother – Ann Bown (born circa 1835) who married my g-g-grandfather Joseph Peckford (born circa 1830) at Change Islands, Newfoundland. Ann and Joseph were married on
3 October 1855 by Rev WA Elder Their several children and subsequent generations remained on Change Islands. I know a good deal about the Peckford line but nothing at all about Ann Bown.

The Peckford family and many others on Change islands originated from Dorset, England and it seems likely that the Bown family might also have gone to Newfoundland from Dorset or neighbouring counties of Somerset or Hampshire

Any information on the English origins of the name would would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Bob Peckford
Carlisle, England

I think it's possible that we're related - very distantly but I still think it's possible :-)

I have an Arthur in my tree but had him listed with a different birth date. Minnie was a very popular name, which is the name of my Great, Great Grandmother b. 1870 in Brixton. Her father was Benjamin John b. 1845 and his father was Richard b. 1809. Is it possible that Richard was your Athur William's grandfather?

I have a lot of them living around Lambeth, but some of it I've only gone off of the ancestry records.

My Great Grandmother Edith Minnie came out to Australia with her sister in 1914 and ended up marrying and settling down here, although her sister returned to England.

I have attached a photo of my Great, Great Grandmother Minnie Elizabeth in what I think is her shop in London with her husband Thomas Henry Pharaoh.

I have a grandfather, Arthur William Bown, b. 1864 d.1925. He had a daughter, with his first wife Alice Maud Talbot, called Minnie Ada Bown, b.1895 (possibly too late and wrong middle name). My mother Ruby was born to his second wife, Elizabeth Esther Smith. She is now 96 and would dearly love to find a photograph of her father, a plasterer, who died away from home in Bridgnorth, when she was nine. They all seemed to come from the Lewisham, Lambeth area of London.
I would also like to find Arthur William's grave, so she can say goodbye properly, and wonder whether he was brought back to London.

Re: Bown of Bradford and Keighley Yorkshire.

The only information I have for the Bown's from England is below. I would dearly like to find someone who can add more information.
I hope this helps.

Betty

Chesterfield-Derbyshire-England
21st June 1824

Sir
Understanding that you are the Son of Mr. Wm. Bown who formerly went
from Sheffield near this place and was the eldest Brother of W. John Bown late of Bradford in Yorkshire who died at that place on 3rd February 1823 we beg to advise you upon the subject of the affairs of the letter and give you as correct a detail of as we are able.

John Bown died intestate leaving a widow but no children or grandchildren.
He also left Twenty Two Nephews and Nieces (the children of his deceased brothers James, Adam and Isaac and sister Catherine who married a person of the name
Hardwick) and likewise left a sister Mrs. Ann Thompson who is now living in this town. By the Law of England the real estate of John Bown has descended to his Heir at law (who is your Father, if living, or his eldest Son, if dead) and the personal estate to the widow and next of kin in the following proportions - namely - three-fourths (that is to say, one half under the Statute of Distribution and one half of the ?? ?full under the custom of the Province of York with which Province John Bown died) will belong to the widow and the remaining one fourth to the next of kin who are the nephews and nieces and sister above ?? /? and the children of William Bown (your father) in case he is dead leaving more than one.

In September last Adam Bown (the eldest son of the late James Bown and who was as we supposed for reason hereafter stated the Heir at law of the late John Bown) and Edward Hardwick, the son of Catherine, applied to us and requested our professional assistance in the affairs of John Bown and to ascertain if any thing was producible to the Heir or next of kin. After three journies to Bradford (a distance of more than 50 miles) and much correspondence with a Mr. Mowson the surviving partner of John Bown and also with a Mr. Beldon who was employed for the widow an arrangement was made, but no money has been paid nor any final case effected. John Bown was at his death entitled to one half of a Real Estate consisting of an Iron Foundry and sundry Buildings at Bradford and also some Personal Estate. The Real Estate was mortgaged to nearly its value and there were many debts owing by John Bown at his death. After a full investigation of the affairs as well regarding the real as the Personal Estate it was concluded between Adam Bown and Mr. Mowson that the latter should give to the former in satisfaction his right as Heir at Law in the half part of the above Real Estate of John Bown 160 pounds to be paid on 20th January next upon executing a proper Conveyance to Mowson of the Estate and it was likewise agreed between Adam Bown and the widow that 250 pounds - should be accepted by the next of kin in satisfaction of their one fourth part of the residue of the Personal Estate of John Bown to be paid in September next. By this arrangement the 160 pounds would ?? ?? ?? ?? to Adam Bown ?? ?? same having been produced from the ?? ?? ?? ?? 50 pounds would belong to the next of kin - the children of each of William Bown taking the same share as their parents would have done ?? ?? ?? ?? be divided equally between them and Ann Thompson will of ?? ?? ?? ?? share as any of her brothers would have done - we saw ?? ?? ?? ?? of the Nephews and Nieces on Saturday last and they ?? ?? ?? ?? accede to the arrangement as to the personal Estate.

If any litigation was to take place between the Heir and the Widow possibly all of the personal estate (as well the tree fourths retained by the Widow as the one fourth belonging to the next of kin) might be decreed to be applied in liquidation of the Mortgage Dept on the Real Estate by which proceeding the Widow would be left Destitute of the means of subsistence and a larger surplus might thereby be produced to the Heir from the Real Estate, but ?? ?? ?? of the heavy and unavoidable expense which would be incurred as well as leaving the Widow Penniless and a risk as to the result Adam Bown thought it best to wind up the affairs with as little expence as possible, and therefore made the arrangement before stated - Thereby allowing the Widow a comfortable maintenance and his Aunt Thompson and Cousins a share with him of the Personal Estate - Indeed in so small a Property we could not advise litigation, the mode of proceeding being tedious and very expensive, and Adam Bown was not inclined to have any unpleasantness with the Widow.

Adam Bown has taken great trouble in the business and some expence (perhaps to the amount of 25 or 30 pounds) and has been incurred but in consequence of the Widow B. Mr. Beldon has ?? manifested every disposition to do what was proper upon the subject. Some expence has been saved.

In consequence of your Father and his Children not being heard of by any of your relations here as we were informed for Ten or Eleven Years it was presumed they were dead. This presumption the Law of England will warrant in all legal Proceedings where Parties of what are abroad, having been unheard of for seven years. This was the reason for believing Adam Bown to be the Heir.

Since the above agreements were made the Widow of John Bown has produced a letter purporting to come from you dated the 24th August 1822 and addressed to your late Uncle and in consequence of which some communication with you is made necessary.

These are the facts which we have thought best under the direction of Adam Bown to lay before you and from ?? residue ?? ?? ?? very distant from home the means of corresponding with you extremely difficult and much more occupied in the passage of letters to and from North America we have request the favor of your final determination upon the subject at your first convenience in giving which you will be pleased to be full clear and explicit.
As the Property is small perhaps it will not be thought worthy the notice of your Father or his Children, if he be dead and the shares, although small, will be to some of the Parties here be found very acceptable. And in case you conclude to forego a claim to the Property and allow the Proceeds to go in the manner and according to the arrangements before stated we shall have to trouble you to execute a form of Release to that effect which we will prepare and forward to you for that purpose on having your previous instructions. But on the other hand if your Father or his children decide to accept what may belong to him it will be necessary for him or his ?? ?? ??, to execute a Power of Attorney authorizing some Person ?? ?? ?? in the affairs and transmit the Proceeds ?? ?? ?? deducting expences etc. or if you prefer it in order to cl?? ?? ?? Bown would give your Father if living, or his Heir and ?? ?? be dead, a sum of money for
the Real and Personal Estates, you
??ciency to indemnify Adam Bown
??mids and other casual charges wh??
of the businefs - indeed at once he?
??bary in the affairs of John Bown
?riage of his Brother William - Tho
dead, - the names, ages, places of
the names, residences and profes??
??is Daughters if any, as no marr??
??tly of such of the children, if any, we
??oring us with these Particulars w??

in order ??? no delay ??pediment may exist for
Your Cousin Adam Bown desires his best regards
wishes for the health of your Father and his Family -
Requesting your early reply on his behalf

We are
I have heard that she was known to the locals as Mad Amy!

I know that her first child was born in Nova Scotia but that the family moved to London before Cissie Nichols was born circa 1879.

I don't know if Amy was divorced or died before Charles re- married and cannor find anything so far to confirm but someone out there may know!

The 1870 Federal Census (Williamsburg Twp, Clermont, Ohio) shows Chance Bown is the son of Joseph and Amanda (Haskell) Bown. My records show Daniel Bown is Joseph Bown's father.

By hunting through many census records, I now believe Chancey's father was Daniel Bown, born 1791 in New Jersey. He was married to Mary Saylor, bn.1799 in 1820 in Virginia. Not sure when they moved to Ohio, but in their 50s they are living with their son according to the census.

He was married to Sarah Young, who does have a lot of information. He lived in the Sydney Mines area. Hoping there are relatives out there who read this stuff.

Hi
I have checked my Ann's and find none that would match your Ann. However, William Bown Sr had 2 sons - William Jr, George Frederick. My line follws William Jr. I have not done a lot of research on George but do know that he married Magdaline Haire in Boston in 1803. They had 15 children and most of the info I have found show Newfoundland as where they might have landed. I have a letter received from England. If you would like a copy of this letter let me know. Hope this helps a little bit.
Betty Jacques (rjacques8623@charter.net)

Any information would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Bob Peckford
Carlisle, England
Re: Bown coat of arms

I have a picture but can't seem to attach it. If this helps let me know how I can get a picture to you, if you have not already received one.

HISTORIOGRAPHY

The Bown Coat of Arms illustrated above was drawn by an heraldic artist from information officially recorded in ancient heraldic archives. Documentation for the Bown Coat of Arms design can be found in Burke's General Armory.. Heraldic artists of old developed their own unique language to describe an individual Coat of Arms. In their language, the Arms (shield) is as follows:
"Az, on a cross or, a rose gu, stalked and leaved vert."
When translated the Arms description is:
"Blue; on a gold cross, a red rose, stalk and leaves green."
Above the shield and helmet is the Crest which is described as:
"A hand holding an inescutcheon charged with a rose."
A translation of the Crest description is:
"A hand holding a small shield charged with a rose."
Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times.
A Motto was not recorded with the Bown Coat of Arms.

Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were: occupation, location, father's name and person characteristics. The surname Bown appears to be patronymical in origin, and is believed to be associated with the English, meaning, "descendant of Bown." Different spellings of the same original surname are a common occurrence. Dictionaries of surname indicate probable spelling variations. The most prominent variations of Bown are Bowne, Boon, Boone.

Samuel had just one son whose children came to Canada with their mother in the early 1850s.

If we had records that connected in time, we could find out if there is a connection. I have not yet found any connection to the Bowns of Gloucestershire, though it seems likely enough.

Her remains were never ever claimed yet she had lived as a widow of Rudolph Weischman, with her daughter "Sadie" for a while.
She has LIVING family members. They knew nothing of her remarriage, her death nor do they have seem to have plans to obtain her remains from a storage locker from LakeView Cemetery in Seattle to bury her. She cannot be buried in the Martin Plot in Lake View as she was divorced. Which is, of course ridiculous. There IS room for her there.
Her son, Nicholas Jr. died before she did.
I'm going to TRY to spell her husband's name...this is so odd because I don't USE this email address and just happened to get a new system and was checking to see if anything was still in it.
His name was Rudolph Weischman and he was a soldier. They were married or at least were listed as married and living in Walla Walla, WA. There were indian uprisings...and that's all I can figure that any army activity was at that time in that area.

When she died, she was living with her daughter Sarah which makes it even MORE odd that her body was never claimed. When I say she was living with her, perhaps that's wrong, but she is seen on I think the 1910 census living with her daughter and is a "widow." So her husband had died.
Sadie as Sarah was known lived a long time. NH Jr died before his mother and I'm winging it here but I'll get back to you, another son married, had a daughter and has LIVING FAMILY members who I have met. Nice people but I'm the one who discovered the mystery about Elizabeth Annette because, NH married MY Greatgrandmother in l907. He and Elizabeth had been friends with my great grandparents in Renton, WA.

So, sadly I do not know if any of Elizabeth's family was even notified that she had died! I don't know if her children kept in contact with her family in NS.

NH Martin died in about 1927 and is buried in LakeView Cemetery which is the wonderful pioneer cemetery in Seattle. His children are there too. My family referred to him as "Mr. Martin" so you can see that didn't sit well with them that the he married into the family. And MY great grandmother was also an Elizabeth who went by Lizzie.
They were married 7 years after my great grandfather died in 1900. They went to Victoria, BC and married there in Aug of 1907. Must have suited both of them. Lizzie was from England and NH of course was Canadian. So if you look in the 1910 census record for WA in Renton or King County, you should see NH and Lizzie MARTIN.

While outraged that Elizabeth Bown Martin Weischman was not buried, I don't think her family has plans to actually bury her which is very sad I think. She too is in a locker of some kind along with all those poor other people who were cremated yet never buried. I doubt very very much that ANYONE who is anyone and that is a prestigous cemetery believe me, knows that there are l500 people in undisclosed locations in LOCKERS who have yet to be buried or marked.
Who goes to a cemetery and asks "who have you not buried?"
My whole family is buried there. They were a pioneering and pretty well to do family. Next time I go there, I'm sure I'll make a comment which won't sit well, but still, something needs to be said OR printed in our newspaper.
Before Lizzie and NH Martin married, she was Lizzie Peace Black Williams. Her husband James Williams was also from England. He and NH started the Masonic Lodge in Renton altho the lodge's records have been lost. It was named St. Andrews and I believe that is NS's patron saint. Nice touch.
I have photos of NH.

clairel5@comcast.net

Yes, very sad. Can you tell us her name when she remarried and died? Did she live in WA when she died?

Maybe Elizabeth was estranged from her family, or maybe none of them were able to make the trip from NS to claim her body in WA if that is where she was. At least five of her sisters & brothers were alive in 1913.

Sorry, just found your question.
Actually she remarried! And she died in 1913 BUT until I started poking around, no one knew that NO ONE ever claimed her body at the funeral home and it was sent to a cemetery but still remains unburied but was cremated.
Horrible to find her on a list of 1500 people unburied.

Thanks Betty. I appreciate the additional info. Caroline Louisa [Louise] Bown was my G-grandmother. She married Robert Jacob Ingraham and one of their 10 children was my grandfather Albert Dickson Ingraham.

Judy
