I am Heather Bowness, daughter of Dr. E. Rendle Bowness who was born just outside Summerside and raised there. I do not have any of these people in our tree, but Dad did that era and I do the early English/Scottish era.

Where did you get these first names?? I think I photographed every Bowness tombstone on the Island, but I do have a book here that is not indexed......I will find the index and see if your people are mentioned.

Cheers.....Heather in Toronto, Ontario.

While searching the St. James Parish BT, Whitehead, I came across a surname that I at first glance took for Bowness. I would like to confirm that the name is actually Barrass, not Bowness. The entries were for:

Barras, chr 27 aug 1776 Mary d/o James Barras; Barras chr 12 may 1779 Thos. s/o James Barras; Barrass chr 23 jun 1770 Isabel d/o James Barrass; Barrass chr 28 sep 1774 Ann d/o James Barrass; Barrass chr 19 aug 1775 Jane d/o Wm. Barrass; Barrass chr 11 nov 1777 Hannah d/o Wm. Barrass

Can anyone confirm that these are Barrass and not Bowness...or vise versa?

Thanks,

Dawn E

Has anyone any information on the Bownas family of Boston Spa w/Yorkshire. I am looking for information regarding Thomas William Bownas (b)1864 Boston Spa. I have him and other siblings listed in the 1881/71 census returns for Boston Spa, Harold, Percy and Kate Bownas. Strangely a Emma Naylor is listed as the head of the household and also as mother to the children, there is no husband listed but Emma is listed as married and not a widow.

If anyone has information regarding this family group please get in touch.

Thanks in advance Jason
George Bowness (b. 1847) at Langdale

Hi Lloreta,
Coniston is close to Langdale where a number of the Bowness family seem to have originated. My father (Albert Edward) was born at Crook (near Kendal) 1903, and his father (Isaac) was also born at Crook 1874. His father (George) was born at Langdale 1847. A George Bowness appears on the 1851 census at Elterwater (Langdale area) it becomes confusing as there appear to be a number of George Bowness's in Langdale of different ages.
kind regards and good luck,
Malcolm

Hi,

I am trying to find information about the following people and their descandents

William Bowness born around 1831 in Coniston it is now Cumbria but then it would be Lancashire. He married a girl called Agness.

They had the following children

Elizabeth (1856) who married Isaac Watson and lived in Egremont Cumberland Elizabeth was my Great Grandmother.

She had2 sisters that we know of Mary Bowness c 1858
and Eleanor Bowness 1861c. I think Eleanor married some one by the name of Dickinson but this is just guess work really.

I think there would have been more children but cannot trace them. Any Information on the Bowness Family from Coniston and I would be very grateful.

kind Regards
Lloreta Case
Thanks for replying. I'm afraid I don't know much about these folks. In 1881 Samuel Bownes claims on the census he was born in Somercoats Lincolnshire, but in 1901 he claims he was born in Elksley Notts. I checked the 1841 census and can't find him in Notts, so can't confirm his birthplace. If come across any Bownes/Bowness that strayed to Worksop, please let me know.

Paula

George Bowness will (1773 Parish Arlon, County Westmorland)

At a North Carolina, USA flee market I came across a supposedly original Will for a George Bowness dated 1773 Parish Arlon County Westmorland Yeoman ?. The name of the wife is Elizabeth and the children's names are Elizabeth, Leonard, and Robert. Can you tell me if such a location exists? Having an interest in genealogy myself, this will caught my attention. I wish I could locate family members of this George Bowness to tell them of its existence.
