Re: Indian Lineage

Barry,

I too am a Bowser and not to long ago I had a conversation with another Bowser. I asked him if he had ever heard of any Indian blood in the Bowser Line, his response was a definiate no. I on the other hand disagreed, while searching my family line which is as follows:

Grand-father Daniel Ward Bowser married Ada Evelyn Hoak
Great Grand-Father was David Q. Bowser married Mary Cousins
GG Grand Father was James C. Bowser married Pheobe Bowser
GGG---Valentine Bowser
GGGG ---Daniel Bowser
GGGGG----Valetine Bowser
GGGGGG----Mathis Bowser

I found many Native American records that would indicate Indian blood line but I could never verify for sure. Growing up and even to this day I have been asked if I have Indian blood, my response was always not that I know of. In turn they would reply well you look as though you do. I have Brown eyes, brown hair, and in the summer time when my skin tans to a darker tint it has more of a red appearence than any other color. I begin to really look at the picture of my father and of myself and could see what they were talking about. Moving on to pitures of my grand parents both Daniel and Ada (Hoak) I could see it there as well. More so on my grandmother than on my granfather, therefore, I assumed that it could have some from the Hoak side. In the last few months I have begin to re-research the Bowser line for Native American Heritage once again have been unable to confirm or deny, but still left with the feeling that there is in fact Indian heritage through the Bowser line.
In regards to the Booher name I did find this article which is copied and pasted below. Hopefully this will aid in your search. Good Luck!

February 12, 1990
Vol. 33
No. 6

General Custer Loses at Little Big Horn Again as An Indian Activist Becomes Keeper of His Legend

By William Plummer, Bill Shaw

Facebook
Twitter
E-mail
Barbara Booher is clearly uncomfortable, standing beside the marker where Gen. George Armstrong Custer was felled by an Indian bullet 114 years ago. "I don't like the man," she says. "But I don't have to like him to do my job."

Booher, 49, is the new superintendent of the Custer Battlefield National Monument outside Crow Agency, Mont.—and, according to a small but vocal group of Custer buffs across the country, she is manifestly unfit for the job. Not to say they are right, but the Custer loyalists insist they have a point: Booher is a full-blooded Ute and Cherokee Indian who vows to cut through what she calls the Custer myth and tell the Indian side of the famous Battle of Little Big Horn. "The story is out of balance," she says. "It doesn't take much to look at the exhibits and see that everything is tilted toward Custer, who was the loser in that battle."

"I don't want to sound racist and chauvinist," says Jerry Russell of Little Rock, Ark., a member of the Little Big Horn Associates, a national group that guards the old warrior's memory. "But I want the lady out of there. She's not qualified."

Custer was a dashing, saber-wielding cavalry officer, a Civil War hero who distinguished himself with reckless forays into Confederate strongholds. His men died by the hundreds in these attacks, but—thanks to what came to be called Custer's luck—he always emerged unscathed and covered with dime-novel glory. His luck ran out on June 25, 1876. While waging a campaign against the Sioux and Cheyenne, he ignored warnings that Indian tepees stretched for eight miles along the Little Big Horn River. He and his 225 men were wiped out when they charged into the midst of as many as 40,000 Sioux and Cheyenne.

Booher, who is the only Indian woman superintendent in the U.S. Park Service, contends that the monuments at the battlefield lionize Custer, thereby distorting history and slighting Native Americans. She notes that the names of Custer's soldiers are inscribed on one monument, but no mention is made anywhere of the deeds of the triumphant Sioux Indian chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. And she points out that while Custer's men are memorialized as "fallen heroes," the Sioux and Cheyenne are described only as "hostile Indians." The marker also fails to explain the reason the Indians were hostile: For decades they had been forcibly driven from their homelands and onto reservations.

Booher herself grew up on the Uintah and Ouray Ute reservation in northeast Utah and still remembers a junior high school teacher telling her class that "the only good Indian is a dead Indian." Booher, whose parents worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, spent the last 10 years working for the bureau in Anchorage, negotiating intricate land-allotment programs for Native Alaskans. Her skills as a mediator deeply impressed Lorraine Mintzmeyer, the Park Service's Rocky Mountain regional director in Denver, who hired her. "Custer is a delicate situation," says Mintzmeyer, "and with her connections in the Native American community, Barbara was the right person for the job."

Booher was not so sure herself—at first. She liked her life in Anchorage. She and her husband, Hal, 56, a former Bureau of Land Management employee, own a home there, and she is a fanatic salmon fisherman and deer hunter. While vacationing in 1988, she visited the 760-acre Custer Battlefield for the first time and was moved by the eerie beauty of the place. She couldn't help noticing too that among the myriad white grave markers there was just one that commemorated an Indian death. "It looked like a No Parking sign," she says, adding, "This will all change."

Booher promised as much to the surrounding Indian communities of eastern Montana and northern Wyoming, whom she met shortly after taking over last year. She advised them of her plans to install a permanent exhibit of Native American culture as well as monuments to Indians who died in the battle. "We were never made to feel welcome up there," says Janine Windy Boy, President of the Little Big Horn Community College in Crow Agency. "When we heard she was hired, we thought a miracle had happened."

While her husband tries to sell their home in Anchorage, Booher lives alone in the superintendent's house below the battlefield. Her dining room window looks north toward a series of hills rising from the banks of the Little Big Horn River. "I sit here in the morning and look out on those hills," she says, "and I try to imagine what Crazy Horse was thinking and feeling that day. It reminds me that the Battle of the Little Big Horn is really an Indian story."

—William Plummer, Bill Shaw at the Custer Battlefield

So Barry, here I show you proof that there are Native American Indians with the Last Name Booher full blooded at that. Now, tbe challenge will be to be able to link your Booher to someone like this Barbara Booher who is a known full blood indian then you should be able to calculate the percentage of Native American Blood.

I hope some of this was of help.

Sherry

I am really new at this, but this might help a bit. My grandfather was Lloyd Bowser. My mother is Doris (Bowser) Smith. She was born in Cairnbrook (sp?)PA. Her grandfather was Joseph Bowser. I had always been told that there was a family Native American connection, but had no proof other than stories until last year. (My parents moved to Indiana shortly after they married and I know almost nothing about my family.) That's why I am looking on the Internet. My daughter had her DNA tested at Notre Dame for a class project and she carries a fairly strong Native American allele. We were surprised that the family story must be true. I'll keep looking but there might be a distant connection here. I also know someone wrote a Bowser family history. Have you heard about this? Do you know who wrote it? June 6, 1882 buried St. John's German Cemetery, Garrett County, MD.

William H. Bowser's wife was Christina Dianna Lenhart, b.
Nova Scotia/ New Brunswick Bowser/Hergert

I am a Bowser and would love more information on my family. My grandfather Horld R. Bowser was born in kingston. His father Harold R. was also born in Kingston, NY and was a police officer. Harold Sr. Father was Herman Bowser born 1869 in New Brunswick and Herman married Emma Hergert who was from Nova Scotia (I believe Lunenburg) born 1867. I believe Emma's father is Edward Hergert born in Nova Scotia. This is where I cannot go any further. Harold R Sr left his family when my grandfather was just a child. He really did not know much about him or his family. Harold Sr was married to Agnes Cahill and Harold Sr never divorced her. I would love any information you might be able to provide.... thanks in advance :)

I recently found the link between the Bowser Family (Mathias Sr, Mathias Jr, Valentine, Daniel, Jacob A) between his great grandmother (Olive (Maud) Bowser b. 1874. Is anyone out there researching this line. I have seem many trees with Jacob A and Mary Ann Murphy but many are conflicting.

I was also glad that Jim posted the LDS # of the family in Switzerland. I had make inquirys and the answer I found most often is I copied the information from an online tree.

Claudia

I am looking for anyone that can help with information on Evelyn Bowser Bellas daughter of Daniel Ward Bowser and Ada Evelyn Hoak Bowser, Grand daughter of Everett McKinley Hoak.
Evelyn's birth was abt 1960 in Kittanning, Armstrong, Pennsylvania. She is listed on her mothers death certificate as Evelyn Bellas and after contact with the funeral home it was confirmed that she was Ada's daughter. I know that some of Ada and Daniels children were sent to an orphanage, so I am unsure if Bellas is a married name or an adoptive name. ANy help will be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Sherry

Try Mündwilers of Tenniken by Jules Billeter, LDS microfilm #1045498; European Region. These translated church records take the Mathias Bowser line back four generations to Hans BUSER, b. abt. 1538 in Switzerland. If you just want more information about Mathias himself though it probably won't be much help.

I am researching Harvey S. Bowser whom I think was born in Armstrong County. He was born on June 24, 1857, and died in a sawmill accident on June 3, 1884 in Knox Twp. Jefferson County. He was married to Caroline (Carrie) Shaffer in September of 1880. I cannot find anything that tells me definitely who is parents were. I think they were Daniel Bowser and Mary Christy, but cannot say for sure. I am just wondering if anyone would have information on this. I looked in the Bowser Family History book on line, however, I cannot find anything that matches.

My grandmother's best friend in Indianapolis was Mary Stuart Bowser (1901-1995). After my grandmother died, we lost touch. I remember Mary mentioning "Paul," but I don't know if that was a husband or a brother. She also lived in Columbus, Ohio, for a time because our family visited her there in 1957. I have a full-length photograph, and two copies of her book of poems, "Bright Shells," which is dedicated to her grandchildren "Michael Stuart and Melinda" which certainly indicates she was married at one time! Please email me if you can help. trishcallis@hotmail.com
(put her name in the subject line, please).

Kittanning Bowser

My father is Warren and goes by Bob, if anyone could help me with this portion of my tree it would be greatly appreciated. My info is very limited, I know he was born in either Yatesboro or Kittanning Pennsylvania, he had 8 brothers and sisters, born in the 50's and/or 60's, one of whom is named Gary and I believe one that is names Mary, and they all reside in Kittenning now. I think the majority, if not all of his siblings are still living. His parents on the other hand are both deceased, I believe his father died in the 80's and his mother within the past 10 years. My father has been married twice once to my mother Karen R. McNeely Bowser 1953-2010, 2 children came of this marriage, and to his current wife of 20+ years, where 2 children came of this marriage. Unfortunately, my relationship with my father is as limited as the info I have so I'm unable to gain this information. Thank You in advance.
