According to a report by John
Brace, member of the
Wyoming Valley Historical Society the
Brace family is of Norman French origin. Rudulphus de Braceis & Aldulphus de Braci were with William the
Conqueror at the
Battle of
Hastings & received charters of
English lands. Charter to Rudulphus occurs in 1080, his son William held Wisterton,
Cheshire & the manor continued till the time of Henry VI & writers of the period between the
Conquest & the end of the 16th Century disclose enough to prove the continued existance of the family. Aldulfus de Braci is styled in the Registers of
Croxton Abbey, Leicestershire &
Melton Priory,
Yorkshire as the "foreigner" holding
Croxton. There is mentioned in 1333, Ralph
Bracey, vicar of Meole. In 1436 the name was spelled Braa'se.Then in l505 the name was first spelled
Brace. The first settlements in the new world were in the
Connecticut Colony by John
Bracie in 1642. At times the name was spelled in both styles. It goes on at length. Are you still interested?
