African American Bragg's from Mississippi and South Carolina

My name is Vince Bragg. I am a descendent of Marcus Bragg, born around 1789 in South Carolina and died in the 1870's in Winston Co. Mississippi. Marcus was the slave of James and Nancy Leatherwood Bragg who were from the Spartanburg, SC area. When James and Nancy migrated from Spartanburg to Winston Co. in the 1850's, they brought along Marcus and his family which included his wife who I think was named Tempie, and children Mary, Jack (my great-great grandfather), Jennie, Lucy, Ann, and Richard, who was born on his way to Mississippi in Alabama. Jack's son John Sr is my great grandfather, and his son John Bragg Jr is my grandfather. John Sr died in Winston County in 1958 and John Jr died in Louisville in 1977. Our Bragg's ended up settling in Fearn Springs, Mississippi in the southeast corner of Winston Co. Over the years they branch out to Louisville, the county seat, and north to Henderson, Tn, Memphis, and other destination north. If anyone recognizes these names or this lineage please contact me.

I have traced my Bragg line back to John Smith also, his name was Thomas and he married the daughter of Capt. Christopher Newport. but nothing before him, and I have not had access to the passenger list for the Susan Constant or Sarah Constant, there is a debate as to the real name, that Newport Captained.

Hi there. I'm looking for help on collecting any information on my paternal grandfather. The only information I have is his first name (which may be a nickname), his wife's name, and the name of his children. I believe the family ties are in Maryland, however it's entirely possible that the true roots started in PA, VA, or one of the Carolinas.

Name - Roy Bragg
Spouse - Gertrude Griffith (born 10/24/1921, eventually remarried and took the surname Kirby, Died 1/16/2004)
Children - Richard Bragg, Robert Bragg (born 3/8/1954), Carol Bragg, Joyce Bragg

Thank you to anyone that can help!

Hello!

Some nice member of Ancestry.com has posted in the Public Photos section five pages from this very old Bible. I am delighted! However, I am unable to see the pages. When I click on the small versions of them, nothing appears. I have checked with Ancestry Support, and they suggested I post a message about this issue. If you own the Bible, would you please resubmit the photos or contact me? I would LOVE to see the pages!

Thank you!
Jean Ann

I have been researching my great grandparents, and may have a possible connection to a Charles Bragg. It appears that a Charles Bragg was the name of my great grandfather's father's name. Christopher Columbus Bragg, who died on January 10, 1970, had listed in the death certificate that his parent's names were, Charles Bragg, and Caroline Browning. It appears this family lived in West VIrginia, Cabell county. Christopher Columbus was born abt. Jan. 28, 1884. He married Louise Virginia McCoy, together they had 11 children, and she grew up while the infamous McCoy Hatfield fued was coming to an end. If this has any relevance, please contact me!

My Great-Grandmother was Louise McCoy Bragg, her husband was Christopher Columbus Bragg, I also have his social security number from a letter from the Dept. of Health, Education & Welfare dated January 22, 1970 they both died within a few year of the other, I have cemetary deed for him, and the name of the funeral home, in Huntington, W. Virginia and it's address, sent to my great aunt Helen on January 27, 1970. I also have a picture of her gravestone, in Fresno, CA.taken in 1973 after her death. They had eleven children there were only 2 or 3 surviving her, and assumne they are all gone now. She spoke of Christopher Columbus Bragg who said his claim to fame was his relationship to the Confederate General, Braxton Bragg, and she spoke of the feuds between the MCCoy and Hatfields when she was a girl. Her father's name was Sylvester (Ves) MCCoy, her mother Ellen or Mary Varney, they lived in Huntington, W. Virginia, Cabel County. Her daughter Kathleen Olive Bragg married my grandfather Sidney W. Stephenson, they all lived together in the 1930 census. There is several interesting stories and I have many letter written back and forth between children cousins aunts and uncles with tragic yet infamous endings to their lives. I just want to find all the connections I can to paint a broader picture than I have now. If anyone has any kind of information or know of how I might find information I would be eternally grateful, asI find it quite fascinating, they lived during a time in our nation that was filled with bigger than life people and their stories. Where did their inner strength come from, to have surevived so many, shadey, sad and infamous circumstances. Can anyone help me with this search?

Re: DNA

I notice that there 8 Bragg DNA results on ysearch.org. But only two on the "official" Bragg surname project at FamilyTreeDNA--the latter seems to have become inactive after about 2005-07. In lieu of an active project posting on ysearch.org (along with a pedigree) is a good way to compare your results to other Braggs.

My grandmother, Estella Bragg, is descended from the New England Bragg family (see the Allied Bragg Families of New England Rootsweb database http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...). Most of those tested appear to be from the southern/Virginia Braggs, and would have a different immigrant ancestor. The New England Braggs descend from an Edward Bragg and his brother Nicholas who were born 1615 and 1616 in Somerset, England; and the "Southern" Braggs descend from a Thomas Bragg, born 1580, who came to Jamestown even earlier, if the online genealogies are accurate (I know this is sometimes a big IF).

My interest is whether these two Bragg families had a common origin/ancestor in England. Has anyone from the New England Braggs been tested? My mother's cousin (surname Bragg) was just tested by 23andme and belongs to y-chromosome haplogroup R1b1a2a1a1b5a or R-M167 (aka R1b1b2a1a2c according to 23andme). One of the folks on ysearch (7335W) also belongs to this haplogroup but descends from the Jamestown Bragg ancestor, so this would suggest the two families are indeed related, but we would need a specific y-chromosome (STR) test to confirm. My uncle claimed that we were "shirttail" relatives of Braxton Bragg, but going back to the 1500's in England would be pretty distance. Is Bragg considered a single- or multiple-origin surname in England?

Kathy

I am charting the Stone family along with Jim.
Can you help me some more on the Longan/Langdon family? Have you found sources?

Particularly:
Sarah "Sally" Longan/Langdon who wed John H Stone (John Stone, William Stone)

Interesting facts on her children's MO DC's

William Henry Stone 1921 mother: "Sally Christian" (makes sense) reported by his sister Hattie (Stone) Claggett.

Harriet (Stone) Clagget 1931 mother: "Sally Langdon" (not Longan) reported by her daughter Minnie L Claggett.

And also:
Jane B Langdon (Longan?) who wed Thomas Hollyman (Mary Stone, William Stone) on 23 Jul 1823 in Woodford Co, KY ["History of Woodford County Kentucky" by Wm Edward Railey pg 340 spells her name Langdon].

Is Jane Sally's sister?

About Catherine Stone - Were you referring to John H's sister Caty Stone who married Allen Pearson; or to Caty's aunt Catherine Stone who married Richard Gray?

Suzy Hutson

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Thursday, Oct. 26, 1911:

• "MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The largest estate ever left by a woman in Alabama is that of the late Mrs. E.T. Bragg, whose will has just been filed for probate in this city. Although the will is withheld until it has been probated, it is understood the estate is between $800,000 and $1,000,000, equally distributed among her kinsmen, most of whom reside in Montgomery."

Not my line, just sharing.

This is a very delayed reply I am sorry. I am Donnalee Bragg my father was Keith William Bragg of Ryde Sydney. His father was William Edward Bragg and my Grandmother was Marjorie Lilly Bragg (nee Walker). I have just been following the hint links so have no fact. I have just following the areas and place too as a match as I know that the Braggs lived in Ryde most of them and previous to that around the Hawksburry River area. I remember my father metioning this and my grandmother was from the Singleton/Maitland area. I could be completely wrong but my gut says I am on the right track. I hope so.

My family tree shows a Hattie Bragg as the daughter of my Great Grandfather Frank Bragg who fought in the civil war. Frank Bragg: was born14 in Feb 1840 in Connecticut. He died in 1926 in Hartford County, Connecticut. Any pics you have of Frank and or his two brothers John and Syril would be great!
