I don't have specific information about your Benjamin Hoyt, but I'm guessing he was somewhat of a relation to the Benjamin Hoyt who was married to Deborah Willey on 10 Nov 1768. This Benjamin was born about 1745 and d. 1770 in Thornton, Grafton, NH. At the time, the family of Israel Brainerd lived in Campton, Grafton, NH. On 20 Apr 1772, Deborah (Willey) Hoyt m. Israel Brainerd. In 1785, they moved to Danville, Caledonia, VT, where both died and were buried. Israel and Deborah's daughter Susan Brainerd married Charles Bickford and they lived in Danville (formerly Canada East, later Lower Canada, Quebec, where they both died and were buried. Since Benjamin Hoyt and Deborah Willey were married only about two years, I don't know if they had any children. I suspect that your Benjamin could be a child of one of Benjamin's brothers.

Polly Brainard, wife of Benjamin Hoyt VT > OH > IN (b. est. <1774, d. <1846)

"Polly" Brainard is identified in two documents: as "Polly," wife of Benjamin Hoyt, in a deed for the sale of land in Trumbull County Ohio in the early 1830's, and as Polly Brainard in the death record of her daughter Mary Hoyt Whitcher (d. MI 1866. Benjamin and Polly both died in Bartholomew County, Indiana in the 1830s, and are buried there in what used to be a small family plot. Their graves have been obliterated.

The family is thought to have lived in Caledonia County, Vermont before emigrating to Ashtabula, Ohio between 1810-1820, and then to Trumbull, Ohio around 1830, and then to Bartholomew County, Indiana in the early 1830s. Polly predeceased her husband, who died in 1836.

There were 5 Hoyt children, all born in Vermont between 1793 and 1811, with one possible exception as to locality. They are:

Mary Hoyt (Whitcher) b. 1793 VT, d. 1866 Michigan

Benjamin Hoyt, b. 1794 VT, d. 1852 Plum, Venango County PA, m. Philancy "Phila" Alvord, dau. Stephen Washington Alvord, b. VT

Fanny Hoyt (Alton), d. Wabash, IN, 1840s

Hannah Hoyt (Flint), b. 1807 VT, d. Concord, IN, 1875

Amelia Hoyt (Gee, Hayford, Robe), b. 1804-1810 VT or "Lower Canada" (inconsistent info), d. Concord IN, 1859, thrice widowed.

Christopher Hoyt b. 1805-1811 VT, d. Concord IN, 1846, m. 1831 OH Angeline Thayer b. 1813 Barnet, VT. Four children.

I am descended from Christopher Hoyt. My research interest is identifying the parents of Benjamin and Polly Hoyt. Benjamin is a common name among Hoyts, and I can't connect this Benjamin Hoyt to any specific branch of the Hoyt family.

I can rule out the Benjamin Hoyts in the 1790 census of Vermont, and I can rule out most of the individuals of the appropriate age identified in the published Hoyt family genealogy by David W. Hoyt.

I know there was a small number of Brainard/Brainerd families in Vermont in the 1790s, but I can't find any information specific to Polly. I have searched for both "Polly" and "Mary."

Research is made a little more complicated by the fact that Caledonia VT used to be part of Orange County, VT and parts of it were later incorporated into Essex County, VT.

Any clues appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a few photos that are old. Probably belonged to my mother who was born 1936 and they were taken in 1949 June. I was looking thru an old box of photos and organizing them and decided to look and see if anyone was searching for the photos that didn't pertain to my family. My mother was born in PA. The spelling of Sue Brainerd is the same on the photos. I will wait to here from you.

The Braynard family from Clark Co., Illinois that you are from comes from The name Brainard. Alonzo Brainard moved from Ohio to Illinois in about 1840 or there abouts. His father was Benjamin Brainard. Due to the census takers at the time the name some how was switched to Braynard. Maybe Alonzo wanted it that way. I found 3 different spellings on census till the one that took now. I have been researching this line for some years now and if you would like information on this line and all the way back to Daniel Brainard the 1st one in the US please get a hold of me.

Anne Carter Brainerd Obit

BRAINERD, Anne Carter 1926 - 2009 Here's to a life well lived! Anne attended Southern Oregon schools, and graduated from Saint Helen's Hall in Portland, OR, in Pensacola, Florida, she married her high school sweetheart, David Brainerd, from Grants Pass, while he was serving in the Navy. On returning to Medford, Dave joined his brother's photography business at Brainerd Studios and Anne was active in The Junior Service League. In 1954 Anne and Dave headed to California to start their own business, and to raise their young daughters. In Petaluma, they opened The Camera Corner, which they ran for over forty years. Anne was active in The Petaluma Community Guild as well as involved in many civic and social projects, PTA, Petaluma Women's Club, and an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church. At age 50, she went back to school to fulfill her dream to be a "working woman" and graduated from an intensive travel accreditation program in San Francisco. Anne spent 25 years in the travel industry making sure that she and her clients saw most of the world. Her travels led her all over the globe, but rickshaw rides and shopping in Hong Kong always topped her list of favorites. One of her favorite stories was a night in San Francisco, where Anne and Dave were dining in a restaurant and struck up a conversation with a Catholic Priest at the next table. He soon joined them, and the threesome went out on the town visiting "back alley joints" until the wee hours of the morning, to show him the real San Francisco! She loved to be on the go having adventures all over the map. Her son-in-law, Lee, affectionately called her "Freeway Annie"! In 2002 Anne returned to Medford to be closer to her beloved family cabin at Howard Prairie Lake, and rekindle grade school friendships. Even in Medford, she knew the way to the airport! Anne was always meeting up with family and friends for travel adventures, and long week ends. She is survived by her two daughters, Lyne Erving, and husband Dr. Otto Spoerl in Seattle, Jan Hurd, and her husban d Lee in San Jose; grandchildren, Kevin Erving, with wife Jennifer in Chicago, David Hurd, Scott Hurd, William Hurd, and Kristen Hurd, all in California; and one great-grandson, Carter Erving in Chicago. No services will be held at Anne's request. Remembrances in Anne's name can be made to The Petaluma Community Guild P.O. Box 2753, Petaluma, CA 94953 or The Rogue Valley Manor's Fairy Godmother Fund for young women in need, 1200 Mira Mar Avenue, Medford, OR 97504.

Frances Theobald Brainerd 95, died on October 29, 2008 at Channing House, Palo Alto, California. Frances was bon in Annapolis, MD, on August 2, 1913, to Rear Admiral Robert A. Theobald and Helen Berry Theobald. As a young girl, Frances lived in China where her father was stationed with the Navy. She then went on to Bishops School in La Jolla, CA, and Vassar College, where she graduated with honors. During the 2nd World War, Frances worked in the Dept of Naval Intelligence where she used her ability to speak seven languages to assist with code breaking and other critical activities. It was there that she met James Lamb Brainerd, whom she married in 1945. In 1947, with her husband Jim (deceased), Frances came to California. For the next 50 years, she used her incredible energy and talent to serve her communities and her church. In that regard, she ran a Girl Scout troop, was extremely active in the Junior League, serving as president of the Bay Area chapter, and was one of the three co-founders of the Children's Health Counsel of Palo Alto, CA. She served as the executive director of the Children's Health Counsel for 10 years and was instrumental in making it a nationally-recognized facility for the treatment of children with behavioral and developmental issues. Later in life, Frances and Jim moved to Borrego Springs, CA. In that lovely desert community, Frances worked with others to create and build a visitors center for the State Park. Also, she and Jim, with the assistance of many others, were the founders of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Frances served for many years as a senior warden and lay reader at St. Barnabas. St. Barnabas was her crowning achievement and it is the place where she will come to rest with her Jim, Frances is survived by her children, Helen Brainerd Windsor (John) and Alexander (Lex) Lamb Brainerd (Carlyn Clause), six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her brother, Robert A. Theobold Jr. pre-deceased her. Frances is also survived by her nephew, Robert A. Theobold III (Mary); and her niece, Mary Theobald Majors (George). She will be greatly missed by all. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff (on the second floor) of the Channing House for their loving, attentive and professional care, with special thanks to Stephanie Stephens.
Harry Irving Brainerd m. Marion ----, late 1920s, NY or New Eng.

Harry I. Brainerd was born in Lawrence, MA 2 Nov. 1906, son of Irving Lester Brainerd and Elizabeth Jane Burns/Byrne. He died 6 July 1930 in Brooklyn, NY. On his death certificate, his wife's name is given as Marion. Harry was estranged from his father's family and nothing is known about his wife, not even her surname. It is unknown where or when they were married. They cannot be found in the 1930 federal census, in Brooklyn or anywhere else.

Supposedly Marion went to Mass. to his father's family and asked for help after Harry's death, since she was left with a child who had some kind of blood disease. The child may not have survived.

Looking for any information about Harry, Marion, or the child.

I have a Rica M. Brainerd, b. 6/28/1829 in Durham, NY, the first child of Levi and Mary (Morse) Brainerd.
This is from Lucy Abigail Brainard's genealogy of the Brainerd/Brainard family (Vol II, part 6, page 118).

Maybe the spelling will help with your search. Please post what you find so I can record it.
I am still working on Rice Morse Brainerd, son of Levi, but have not been able to figure out what happened to Rice after
1871, when he's mentioned in Levi's will. He may have been deceased by 1880, as I can't find him in the Census. He may also have been dec'd by 1875, since he doesn't appear in Orleans Co. in that year's state census, although he easily could have been in another county. He does not appear in any of the cemetery records for Orleans or Genesee Counties either.

Sooooo ... what happened to Rice?! His wife died in 1861 and their only child Anna is working as a domestic servant in another house by 1870.

Does anyone have any info or suggestions?

In the book David Brainerd, I read that David was concluding his ministry at Cranberry May 28, 1747. David was 29 years old and came to stay at Colonial pastor Jonathan Edwards and wife Sarahs house in North Hampton Mass. Their daughter Jerusha was 17..David was born April 20, 1718..within 7 years came brothers John, Elizabeth and Israel..after Jerusha died she was placed, I believe they said next or across from David in the cemetary. Israel died in 1748. John Graduated in 1746 and lived to be 63 years old..He served as an army chaplain in the Indian Wars...A Pastor-Missionary for 15 years at the only Indian reservation ever founded in New Jersey ..located at Brotherton..Hezekiah Brainerd was the father of David. Son Hezekiah was the oldest..Nehemiah in Yale class of 1732 entered ministry..David was the third son attending Yale in 1739..Nehemiah married Martha and had a daughter Jerusha..This was stated in two different boods of David Brainerd..
Hi Sorry to be so late responding. I worked at the Bixby Library in Vergennes Vermont as reference librarian. F. Strickland spent summers in Vergennes and wrote many published stories about Vergennes. He moved to Oregon later. His family was from Vergennes. Jemima Brainard was his grandmother. I hope I am remembering this correct. There were some mysteries. I will be happy to compile info and sent it along.

Brainerd- Elisha, Amos, Hiram, Solomon, Hiram

I am looking for information concerning Elisha Brainerd's descendants. His son Amos married Rachel Brainerd a descendant of Daniel Brainerd (1641). Amos' family is fairly well documented, but his son Hiram (1808) and grandson Solomon (1845) are not. Any information would be appreciated.
