Now, does this make him a contemporary of Roger, much older than Roger at this point (published in 1707) Is James one of the three brothers.

Also has anyone done any research into Thomas Brayley or Eliza Brayley in Jamaica or Virginia in the early 1600s?

James Brayley

Curiously ... I just came across this tidbit in my research on James Brayley, who I'm trying to prove was the father of Roger Braley of Portsmouth, R.I. circa 1671/2. He comes up as serving in several different companies in King Philip's War, but then I found this while doing some research on Nicholas Noyes Jr. of Salem witch trial infamy ...

The supreme poetic opportunity in the career of Nicholas Noyes occurred, however, some years earlier, when a Reverend friend of his, James Brayley of Roxbury, became afflicted with the Stone. To this unhappy man the poet, accordingly, sent some verses, both consolatory and congratulatory, which certainly ought to establish the fame of Nicholas Noyes as the most gifted and brilliant master ever produced in America, of the most execrable form of poetry to which the English language was ever degraded. In this poem, the author flatteringly expresses astonishment, not only at the fortitude of his friend, but at his versatility, both in doing and in suffering:
"What! in one breath both live and die,
Groan, laugh, sigh, smile, cry, versify?
Is this the Stone? Are these the pains
Of that disease that plagues the reins?
That slyly steals into the bladder,
Then bites and stings like to the adder?
Is this the scourge of studious men,
That leaves unwhipt scarce five of ten?"

He then advances into the merits of his theme, using the name of his friend's disease as a pivot on which to revolve the antic and frantic creations of his fancy:
"For if thou shouldst be Stoned to death.
And this way pelted out of breath,
Thou wilt like Stephen fall asleep,
And free from pain forever keep."

The poet then proceeds to spiritual exhortation:
"That Stone which builders did refuse,
For thy foundation choose and use.
Yea, think what Christ for thee hath done,
Who took an harder, heavier, Stone
Out of thine heart;"

and he asks him to remember this comforting truth, that, great as may be the sufferings inflicted on him by the Stone in this world, they are vastly less than the sufferings of the damned in the next, some of whom
*' roll the Sisyphean Stone."
With this joyous reflection, he also invites him to anticipate the bliss of heaven, where
"shall hid manna be thy fare,
In which no grit nor gravel are;
Yea, Christ will give thee a White Stone
With a New Name engraved thereon."

Now, Alice and Roger's grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren at the very least were Quakers ... and it's been supposed that they were too. Good bet in Portsmouth at that time, but is it possible he was a universalist or puritan minister who after seeing the horrors of war and his "friend's" behavior during the witch trials that he moved to Portsmouth to live in peace?

Just kind of rattled by the Reverend friend of Noyse.

Thoughts from Braleyphiles out there?

Re: Vermont Braley

I hope you are still out there. I have had an account at various times but tend to float in and out of this site. A while ago my sister found George in a census. 1870 Bakersfield, Franklin County, Vermont. Taken on 6/24/1870 Family # 117
Harriet Braley (maiden name is Lamonda) age 35
and children
John 15, Samuel 14, Nancy 11, Prudence J 9, Joseph Korr 6, and Hosea and Moses twins 4 yrs old.
Those are the cold facts in stone (or government fact). The real history that led me and my sister to all this was my mother, Marion Josephine Braley Desjardins. She was born 11/22/1931 in Northwood, NH and passed in 10/1995. She was the family historian as it turned out. I've seen some of the info that cousins have posted but it was off a bit here and there. But, here is what my mother told me of George M. Braley Born 02/24/1866 and Died 12/17/1949.
George was born a twin, premature. He and his twin Hosea were placed in a warm oven to keep them alive as infants. I know that sounds strange but my mother has been spot on about so many details. The twins were called Moshie and Oshie, and based on an old song that he sang there is some "Yiddish" connection in the family. Yes, I know a song he sang. He worked as a Tinker/Trader. That's were my story gaps. His first marriage. He had two daughters that were born in the 1890's. Nina and Mena. His second wife was Bertha Mae Murray born 10/12/1890. When she was about 13 she and her dad met George. He was about 40. He had his daughters with him then around 8-11, not sure. The men did their work and Bertha took care of the girls. George married my Grammie a few years later. If this all sound familiar, we are connected. My mom said that either Nina or Mena (not sure of spelling) was a dress maker, or had a dress shop. She would send my mother dresses every now and then. If this all sound familiar then we are connected. I no longer have an account here, but would like to hear your side of events. Hopefully you can write me at blkmntwitch@live.com, can't wait to hear from you.
