FYI: Johann Jacob Brand son of Jacob brand and Maria Elisabeth nee Windnaglin.

I was searching the digital collections of the Free Library of Philadelphia. In the Fraktur collection is a series of birth and baptismal certificates, I found one for a Johann Jacob Brand son of Jacob brand and Maria Elisabeth nee Windnaglin. There is a photograph.

http://libwww.freelibrary.org/diglib/SearchItem.cfm?searchKe...

Translation:

To these two married people, namely Mr. Jacob Brand and his lawful wife Maria Elisab[eth], a born Windnaglin, was born into the world a son, namely Joh[ann] Jacob Brand, was born in to the world in the year of our lord Jesus 1778 the 22nd day of February at [blank] o’clock [blank] in the sign of the [blank]. May God give grace, power and strength so that this Joh[ann] Jacob may grow up in the spirit of praise and honor of the LORD, and eagerly consume the true milk, to search for the original salvation of the souls after his profession of faith and realization of sin through sincere repentance. Before the Christian congregation he was brought to the spiritual rebirth of the holy baptism, and he was baptized by Mr. [blank], preacher and servant of the Word, according to the command of Christ, Matthew 28:19, and he was included into God’s covenant of grace. This Johann Jacob was, through the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, as St. Paul teaches, Titus 3:5, 6, 7, admitted as a member of the community of the holy, to the Lutheran religion, on the 8th day of March 1778. And through the true faith in our savior Jesus Christ, he is taking part in the dearly bought rewards of heavenly joys and the eternal blessedness of the earth. Do not forget the way in which the apostle Paul, Colossians 1:12, 14, described the duty to give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light, etc. The sponsors were Mattheus Windnagel and his wife Maria Agnes. This Joh[ann] Jacob was born and baptized in America, in the state of Pennsylvania, in Lancaster County, in Paxton Township.
Scarcely born into the world, it is only a short measured pace from the first step to the cool grave in the earth. O with every moment! Our strength diminishes, and we grow ripe for the bier. And who knows in what hour the final voice will awaken us, because God has not revealed this to anybody yet. Who tends to his house will depart from the world with joy. Because surety, in contrast, can provoke eternal death.

I have an old birth announcement for the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Walter Brand; the name of the son in not given. The date of birth is Oct 3rd; no year is given.

I found this card in my mother's belongings when she died in 1974. I've saved it all these years thinking it might be some unknown relative who I'd find in the course of my genealogical research of which I've done a lot, having over 5000 names in my tree but no Brand. So it's time to find someone who might appreciate it.

If anyone would like to have this card, I'll be happy to mail it to them.

Roland Hallowell
Cherry Hill, NJ

Re: Ira Smith Brand - Franklin County, NY

Hi Ken! I've searched, but to no avail. I looked through all the records I could find of ships that left New York around March 26, 1852, cannot find a record of him. What is odd is that most ships took several months to arrive in San Francisco from New York (I searched many departure and arrival dates through the Panama Canal), but Ira seems to have arrived in about a month or a bit more as he died May 12, 1852 in California. So, I can't figure out how he got there so quickly if it was truly by boat (which the newspaper article inferred). I found a record of one of the other members of the party from Malone who settled near San Francisco and got a job at a newspaper there. I did find a record of Permelia living in Malone on November 16, 1853 because it says she has letters waiting for her at the post office. I also managed to get the microfilm of the Merrill Advocate Newspaper and found her obituary, but it says next to nothing just that she died at her daughter's home. I did find her grave online and someone took a photo. It's on www.findagrave.com with Cyrus beside her. That's all I know. If you hear more, please let me know! ~Laurie

Hi Laurie,
I realize this is an old post, but was wondering if you made any headway regarding Ira. You probably know this, but his wife married Cyrus Brookins in 1852-53 and went to Wisconsin. My grandmother remember Grandma Brookins telling the story of coming from NY in a covered wagon. The mystery is still with Ira. The dates I have don't quite add up. I have a departure date of 26 Mar 1852, with a death less than two months later. The nice people at Calaveras County say they have no record of his death there.

Any clues you can offer me would be GREATLY appreciated.
Ken

The Brands and the Cagleys were in Chickasaw Co. Ia. in the early 1850's. Mathew and Susannah Cagley Keasling were married in 1854 and James married Anne Keasling in 1861 all in Chickasaw Co.

Michael Cagley, Susannahs brother, kept a diary in 1864. A May 1 entry was "went to see the Brands today." Then a May 9th entry was "the Brands started for Oregon today"

From what I have, that would be Matthew D. Brand and his wife, Mary Macdougal Brand, with the three children. Son Mathew Brand married Susannah Cagley/Kegley; son James Brand married Anna Keasling, daughter of the aforementioned Susannah Cagley/Kegley and Abraham Keasling; daughters Janet and Jane Brand I haven't located, yet. In 1856, Janet was in Yanke, Chickasaw Co., IA. A Janet Brand married John Johnston in Chickasaw Co., IA on 11 Feb 1858. I can't seem to find her after the 1856 IA census.

I haven't reconciled the passenger list yet, so I could be wrong. Obviously, the dates are a tad off from the stones, but even the stones indicate Mary was two-and-a-half years older than Mathew D. Brand. I believe Mathew (son of Mathew D. & Mary McDougal Brand) was in Kensington, PA in the 1850 census.

In looking at the births for Mathew Brand and Mary Mcdougal (familysearch.org), it appears they had (at least):
Mathew 1828
Mary 1830
Agnes 1832
Janet 1837
James 1839
Jane 1842
in the area of Wigtown and Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland. The majority of the above birth record transcriptions have the mother as Mary McDougal, but some have been transcribed as McDowell (the birth says one way, the baptism says the other), so there may be more in the vicinty of Tongland, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, as they are children of a Mathew Brand and Mary McDowell.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/WIG/Penninghame/index.shtml

Both Mathew D. Brand and his wife, Mary (Macdougal) Brand are buried in Gresham, Multnomah Co., OR. There are two locations given for them on Find A Grave, but you can see a picture of their stone.

Another little bit of info that might be of interest: there was a Mathew Brand aged 46, a clogmaker who went on the ship Shenandoa – and a 48 year old Mary Brand – clogmaker -
plus a 10 year old James Brand, born in Scotland and a Jannett aged 13 and a Jane aged 8. This cannot be co-incidence! They left from Liverpool, arrived US in July 1851

In my "random-yet-to-find-a link-file" have some info about a Matthew Brand from Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Based on the 1861 census, Matthew was born in Ecclefechan (1812) and he lived in Penninghame, Newton Stewart after he had married Mary (surname unknown b 1812). They had three children: Jannet (b 1848) James (b 1850) and Jane (1852). I also have a note from another member that Matthew died on 13 June 1881 in Fairview, Multnomah, Oregon, US. Matthew was a clog maker.
My interest is in Brands from Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire.

Don't know if you already had it or not, but Mathew & Susannah Cagley Brand's daughter, Janette "Nettie" married George W. Parsons, son of William Parsons and Jane Johnson (Kashow) Parsons. They lived in CA.

GEORGE W. PARSONS.

Typical of all that is best in western enterprise
is the career of George W. Parsons, one of the
most extensive grain dealers in this part of Cali-
fornia, and a resident of Templeton since 1899.
There are probably few men on the coast
more thoroughly conversant with all depart-
ments of the grain business, or who appreciate
to a greater extent the admirable possibilities
in this direction available to residents this side
of the Rockies. A native of Coles county, Ill.,
Mr. Parsons was born December 11, 1860, a son
of William and Jane J. (Kashow) Parsons, na-
tives respectively of Iowa and Ohio.

William Parsons removed to Illinois when a
young man, and October 7, 1867, started out
over the plains in a train of one hundred and ten
wagons, and comprising four hundred people.
He himself had three wagons, four horses and
four yoke of cattle, and consumed in the jour-
ney seven months. This particular band of gold
seekers had a great deal of trouble with the
Indians, and their trip was interspersed with in-
cidents interesting or dangerous, as the case
might be. Mr. Parsons settled in Clackamas
county, Ore., and bought one hundred and sixty
acres of land, upon which he lived and to a mod-
erate extent prospered for twenty-five years.
The three sons and two daughters born to Mr.
and Mrs. Parsons were reared on the Oregon
farm, and all are now living, George W. being
the second youngest. Thomas J. is resident
manager of the Del Monte Milling Company at
San Francisco, while L. H. is a farmer in the
state of Washington.

Until his twenty-fifth year Mr. Parsons lived
in Oregon with his father, and then engaged
in the logging, saw mill and general lumber
business for about seven years. Afterward he
had charge of a gang of men on the Northern
Pacific Railroad, employed to do repair work,
and in 1895 removed to San Francisco and
engaged in the milling business for the Del
Monte Milling Company. He was general miller
in their establishment for six years, and in 1899
came to Templeton, which has since been his
home, and where he is still manager for the Del
Monte Milling Company's branch affairs. He
buys and sells enormous quantities of grain for
the company, and on his own responsibility han-
dles all kinds of fire and life insurance. During
? he bought four thousand eight hundred
tons of wheat, and during 1902 he will buy about
three thousand tons.
While in Oregon, Mr. Parsons was united in
marriage with Nettie Brand, a native of Oregon,
and daughter of Matthew Brand, a native of
Dundee, Scotland. Mr. Brand is a blacksmith
by trade who came to the United States when
a young man, and homesteaded a ranch near
Portland, Ore., on the Columbia River, about
1852. He subsequently returned to his native
Scotland, and has not been in America for a
number of years. Four interesting children have
been born to Mr. and Mrs. Parsons: George L.,
Ora L., Florence and Ethel. Mr. Parsons owns
a fine residence in the town, and has about
eight acres under prunes. He is quite active
in Democratic polities, and is fraternally con-
nected with the Independent Order of Odd Fel-
lows.

James Miller Guinn.
History of the State of California and biographical record of Coast Counties, California.
Hi Adele, thanks so much for contacting me. I have been trying to obtain the records of the death of Joseph Brand in 1837 but without success. If you are able to supply any info on that I would appreciate it. You may be interested to know I have several photos which have been in our family possession for decades with no identity. I think they are all Brands as they came from my grandmother Jessie Brand. Just a description which might help you -
Mabel Brand taken Oct 1927. She looks to be aged between 20 and 30.Frank Brand taken May 1935 outside a Mann & Crossman establishment (I think) in Australia as one of the signs on the window advertises "Emu Wines" He is accompanied by Billie, and Ada. A soldier in Australian uniform perhaps Boer War or WW1 printed as a postcard. I'd love to identify these people and maybe supply info to help others. Kind regards, Lynn

Hi Lynn. Initially I could only find a birth for Joseph BRAND in Essex that matched the approxiamte year of birth but found this was the wrong fellow. Another researcher believes our Joseph was christened 1 Aug 1834 in the church of St Peter, Liverpool. Mary BRAND was then christened 3Dec 1835 at St Peters. Presumably brother and sister. Both had parents, Joseph Brand and Mary Usherwood.
Marriage of parents - Joseph Brand to Mary Usherwood 7 Dec 1833 St Peters Liverpool.
There is a burial for a Joseph BRAND 3 June 1837, possibly their father and explains why there are no further children.
Joseph (junior) came to W.A. and married Mary Ann EATON in Albany. Their son Joseph Usherwood BRAND is my ancestor.

Parish of Holy Trinity, Twickenham, Richmond Upon Thames. Fathers Names: William Brand & John Wells. There are birth records for William Henry 1909, Ernest Henry 1910 and Dorothy Elizabeth 1906, all born in Richmond Surrey. Dates and location suggest this could be your guys.
Re: Do anyone know of brand's in South Africa

I am busy researching the Brand-family in South Africa. The first record is that of Robert Roberts Brand-born in 1675 who arrived in South Africa from Oslo Norway. He was married twice(the first time on 21 Nov 1700) and had 7 children. As far as I could establish I am a descendant of him.Although the surname Brand is not very common in South Africa I have info about hundreds of people with that surname. A branch of the Brands came from England and another from the Netherlands. The name Brandt is of German origin.Let me know if I can be of help.
