Here belatedly is a brief summary of what I discovered about my branch of the Branders in Ponta Delgada, Azores.

I found the family plot for William Brander who died there in 1854 also the following children of him and his Anna (nee Hoyes):
John - born in 1829 and died in 1832
Thomas born and died in 1843 aged 2 days
Margaret - born in 1836 and died in 1848
William born 1835 and died in 1854

His remaining children were:

James born in PD in 1827 and died in Elgin in 1862
Anna Brander born in PD in 1833 and died in London in 1909
John born in 1838 returned to Scotland date of death unknown to date.

Also in the churchyard was a grave for Jane Brander marked as Spinster but I have not yet linked her to the family.

If anyone on the thread has any additional info please contact me.

Hi

I've found something which may be of interest. There is a John Brander who married Elizabeth Taylor April 12 1783 in the parish of Bellie which is next door to Duffus. They had several children and she is referred to as Elizabeth or Betty or Bettrich which is not a million miles from Beatrix.

Enjoy your trip to Elgin.

Jan

Brander - Moray, Scotland

I am searching for information on my 4x great grandmother, Ann. Up until recently I was under the impression that her maiden name was "Brandon", but I am beginning to think it was actually Brander.

I don't have any information about her other than she would have been born around 1775 in Scotland and she married James Rose probably around 1798. They may have had four children - David Rose (1798), Alexander Rose (1800), Ann Baillie Rose (1802) and William Rose (1805). I suspect Ann may have died shortly after William was born. My 3x great grandfather, William stated that he came from Eglin, Moray, Scotland, so I suspect this is where the family resided.

Can anyone shed some light on this mystery? I would love to find out more about Ann and her family.

Caroline Rose

I'm currently doing research on the Brander's, I come from Mary Brander's line, which I believe would be your father's sister. I got as far back John Jacob Brander (1860 - 1935) and his wife Caroline (1866 - 1920) who were the first Brander's in the U.S. and came from Switzerland. They had 5 kids according to census information: Mary, John C., John G., Ledia, and Harry. Although I have extensive information on Mary (my Great Grandmother) I don't have much on the other members of the family. I am assuming one of the John's was your father?

I have someone who says they have Brander information going back quite a few generations in Switzerland, I'm waiting to hear back from them.

If Charles father was John G. Brander, then John G. was the brother of my Great Grandmother Mary Brander, which is the line I come from. I have that both John G. and Mary Brander's parents were John Jacob Brander and Caroline. They both came from Switzerland and lived in present day Jim Thorpe, but I hit a dead end after that. Mary Brander went on to marry Michael Patrick O'Dwyer, although he adopted the last name Woods when he came to the US.

I was able to get back to my Great Great Grandfather John Jacob Brander (b. 1861) and his wife Caroline (who may also go by Maria Fonjollaz) who came here from Switzerland. I cannot locate any information beyond them, and hopefully you can help. Thanks :)

Thanks Jennifer. I'll certainly be interested if you find anything on your trip to Elgin.

Archibald Dunbar Taylor was christened in January 1793. His godfather Sir Archibald Dunbar of Northfield has to be the one born in 1772 and who died in 1842. His father, Sir Alexander Dunbar, died in 1791 and his grandfather, Sir Archibald Dunbar, died in 1769.

Best regards

Jan

Hi Jennifer,

It is good to see you posting into your thread again!

As Jan knows, the marriage of Beatrix Brander and Jo[hn?] Taylor is what first attracted my gaze to the Branders too. Beatrix is puzzlingly invisible in the records.

But back, for now, to the Iberian connections that were the focus of your original enquiry. In response to my posts in the summer of 2010, you (tantalisingly!) wrote this -- your last post here, dated 17 June 2010:

"Hi Rol

Thank you so much for your reply as you speculated I do have more information on the Azores Branders. My neighbour having visited there recently and coming back with invaluable info from the records office mostly concerning William. I hope to visit there later this year. I shall be away for the next two weeks but will send more details in due course. Will digest your info whilst I am away.

Jennifer"

I am hoping that you may now have some time to share with us the headlines from that "invaluable info from the records office" that your neighbour found in the Azores about the Branders there. If so, that would be much appreciated; and it would also be interesting to hear whether any fresh thoughts resulted from that "digestion" you planned (plus news of progress -- if any -- made in the meantime via other sources).

Rol

I don't think I have very much information which differs from yours. On my records I have noted that Helen Dunbar the 2nd wife of James Brander of Pitgaveny (1732-1780) was the sister of Sir Archibald Dunbar of Northfield. But as with the Branders the christian names are often repeated through the generations and this maybe an earlier Archibald.
I only have the names of the children of James B's first wife. On my genealogical websites I can find no trace of a Beatrix or similar. I am going up to Elgin in April and if I find anything of interest I will let you know.

Jennifer

Hi

Thanks for replying. It's a bit complicated as the christening record was a late entry and the name Beatrix might be an error. However Sir Archibald Dunbar was present at the christening and family records state that he was the godfather. My best guess is that Beatrix was a daughter of James Brander of Pitgaveny by his second wife Helen Dunbar. The same family records state that Archibald Dunbar Taylor's mother was "a Miss Dunbar, niece of Sir Archibald Dunbar Bt., his godfather". This is not possible but she could have been the niece of Sir Alexander Dunbar, the father of Sir Archibald. Burke’s Genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Great Britain & Ireland published in 1879 states that James Brander’s second wife was “a daughter of Dunbar, of Northfield, Bart.”

Regards

Jan Laury

Hi David
No I am not related to this Brander line but I came across Jane Brander born 1859 when I was investigating another Jane Brander who was born out of wedlock to a Helen Thomson and James Brander, blacksmith at Wardleys, Deskford. She was known as the "blacksmith's daughter" on subsequent census returns but lived with her mother's folks. At one time I confused her with your Jane Brander.
My only record of children of Jane and James Jamieson is from the 1881 census where the couple are at Castle Lane, Fraserburgh with son, James George age 3 and daughter Sarah Elizabeth age 1. This finally convinced me that this was a different Jane Brander because she is born at Turriff and not in Banffshire.
It is interesting to note that some of their children had the middle name of Black. Agnes Anne Black was the daughter of Elizabeth Brander (Jane's mother) and George Black so Agnes Anne Black Jamieson was named after Jane's half sister.
George

Jane or Jean Ritchie or Brander was born in Turriff, Aberdeenshire in 1859. Father was John Ritchie and mother Elizabeth Brander. He parents were not married nor did they marry. Elizabeth Brander went on to marry George Black in Banff, Banffshire in 1867. Jane Brander married James Jamieson at Macduff, Banffshire in 1877. He was from Fraserburgh and I believe that they went to live in Fraserburgh. You will be able to track them down in the various census returns, both Jane and her mother. You can also get copies of the birth, marriage and death certificates of all the above on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a modest outlay. I do not know if he had any family out there. The other great uncle emigrated to Canada he was Arthur Peel Brander and his wife was Lily (nee Salmon) they had one son Stanley Willoughby Brander who was born in the UK in 1923. I do not know if they returned to UK or remained in Canada. Any info would be very much appreciated.

Hi

I've just come across this thread. My interest is in Beatrix Brander who married Jo. Taylor probably arouund 1790. They had a son Archibald Dunbar Taylor who was christened at Duffus on April 11 1793. His godfather was Sir Archibald Dunbar whose second wife was Mary Brander, daughter of John Brander of Pitgaveny.

Do any of these names ring a bell with you? I would appreciate any help with the Branders.

Best regards

Jan Laury

Hi Karen- My GG GF James Baird was born in Edinburgh on Dec 15,1825 and emmigrated to Mtl sometime between 1841 (his family shows up in the 1841 Edinburgh census) and 1853 when he married his first wife in Mtl. Margaret Brander (or Brandner) as my uncle always asserted, was a Scot from Aberdeen, the daughter of David Brandner and Ellen McPherson. They married in 1872 and had several children, Caroline, Margaret, Arthur, William, James (my gf) and Maud. Margaret died in 1890 at aged 47. and is buried in the Baird family plot in Montreal (Mount Royal cemetery) James died in 1899 and is in that plot also. James had several children- Margaret, Lillian, Norma, Arthur James, Ronald (my father) and Bruce. They are all dead now. Of course there are a bunch of desendants from those children, now living in Texas, Thailand, Nova Scotia, Ohio, Toronto area, Winnipeg, Sudbury.

Very nice to connect with relatives , no matter how distant. I have lots of dates etc if you want to flesh out any of this data. There are other relatives from james Bairds first two marriages in Montreal but I havent been able to find any of those relatives. I am heading to Scotland next month to do a little genealogy.

Jim /Baird
Tatamagouche N.S.

Apparently lawyers have been speaking the same gobbledygook for centuries. This is all I have on John Brander. And I only found it as an adjunct to my search for the missing Register and Vestry records of Russell Parish from the 1750's to about 1777? Reverend Brander would have maintained these records. I wonder what happened to them? They would be a rare find indeed for genealogists. Edwin Dean Irvin

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for the update -- good to know that you are still "on the case" and have found some additional info. It will be fascinating to hear more, once you are back from your trip.

In the meanwhile, you may be interested to see the beautifully reproduced letter dated 1776 that comes up via this link to the archives of a US document and philately dealer (at least for now): www.empirepost.com/XEP/GB/Z-Archives/PTGB-1776-1.htm Explains the mechanics of how the Brander brothers made their pile! The use of the sign-off "James Brander & Co" strongly suggests that by that date the Lisbon business had partners involved, probably including family members.

Presumably the letter itself was sold out of the dealer's stock a year or two back, though the website seems to offer no guidance on that point.

Rol

Hi Jennifer,

By now you may have cracked this problem -- I hope so! But in case not . . .

You refer (on 22 November 2009) to the first known man in your line being a William Brander (1786-1854), whose son James was born in the Azores in 1837 and was father in turn to the John (b. Azores 1857) who became your great grandfather. You add that "the family were Fruit Merchants based in the Azores but possibly originally from Elgin". And in your opening post you say that from your investigations up to that date you had found that "the family seem to be merchants and James at one point is named as being in Lisbon".

I wonder what the evidence shows about the activities of James (b.1837) in Lisbon. You do not specifically mention the James Brander who flourished there between ca. 1760 and 1780, though you may still know all about him. But it is always dangerous to make such assumptions, so: the IGI shows two local marriages for him, plus a number of children's baptisms -- though unfortunately they do not include a William. Perhaps further research could eventually reveal that one of the older ones produced a son of that name.

The interesting point here is that you stated that your Azores Branders were fruit merchants -- and this James Brander (in tandem with his brother Alexander handling the London end of the business) made his fortune in the citrus trade. As you may know, the proceeds allowed both brothers to buy a fair few acres near Elgin, and James went on to build himself an attractive house there named Pitgaveny. Country Life magazine printed an interesting illustrated article about the house and its owners on 23 August 2001 (vol.195, no.34, pp.52-57), which confirms as much:

"James Brander, who built Pitgaveny, was a self-made man. Born in Moray in about 1731, he made his fortune in Lisbon shipping oranges and lemons to London, where they were sold by his elder brother, Alexander Brander ... " (p.52).

There is also some material about this family accessible via Google Books, in vol. 1 of Burke's LG 1847 -- though what is shown there is in part contradicted by the evidence visible in the IGI.

Rather more speculative material appears in the IGI for Spain, which shows a baptism submitted by an LDS member (i.e. much less dependable than entries generated by the controlled Extraction Program). The parents are recorded as William Brander and Hester Dorothy Burnett, and the child was christened Robert Burnett Brander. The entry was been submitted four times: all the entries say that the birth occurred at Malaga on 6 November, though they disagree about the year: three give 1795 and one gives 1793. Both dates are obviously too early for the father to be your William. But any Iberian Branders naturally catch one's eye. Several daughters born in the same period are attributed to the same parents, all with Spanish forenames. One of the daughters is shown as dying in 1887, with the source apparently being an unnamed book held (?)at Salt Lake City.

You will no doubt also have considered (and it seems excluded?) the William Brander son of John Brander and Margaret Young, who was christened at Drainie in Moray on 14 February 1786 -- per the IGI. He and his siblings may perhaps have some connection with the people who built Pitgaveny and may even have been recruited into the family business, though I have not had the opportunity to explore further in that particular direction. Maybe someone else can help you there, if in fact you think that child could still be a realistic candidate.

At all events, it would be interesting to learn whether you have made any further progress since your last posting here.

Rol

I'm sure that you are right Jennifer: truth to tell the Branders all did seem to use the same christian names over, over & over again. I'm struggling with seemeingly innumerable
Williams, Jameses & Alexanders!!
Anyhow - nice to make contact & if I ever come across any Azorean connections I'll know where to come to!
Regards

Paul

Hi Paul
Thank u for your email. Unfortunately I cannot match our Branders datewise although the names match (down through the generations they seem to keep the same christian names which doesn't help!) My William was born in 1786 where I do not know but possibly Elgin, he died in the Azores in 1854. His son James was born in Ponta Delgada, Azores in 1827 one of seven children. His son John (my great-grandfather) was also born in the Azores in 1857. The family were Fruit Merchants based in the Azores but possibly originally from Elgin area. Maybe further research might bring up a possible link - which I am sure there must be! I will keep you posted

Best wishes

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer

My Mother's paternal line were Branders, all from the Maverston, Urquhart/Elgin area - an area with many Brander lines.

My Great Grandfather, William Williams Brander was born (abt 1857) to William (b c.1805)& Ann (Emslie) Brander. I believe that, among their 7 children, they also had a 'John' for whom I have as yet no B/M/D details.....so I guess not likely to be connected.

However, William(1805)'s, father was a 'James' & I believe produced a brother for William (amongst his 8 children) named James, who was born about 1810 - so conceivably the 'right' sort of age range. Again no evidence at all of any connection but, I guess, interesting.

Were 'your' Branders 'merchants' in Elgin or elsewhere?

Regards

Paul Meredith
